4/18 Mayor’s Spring Cleanup in Lake Walker, 10 a.m.

APRIL

As the neighborhood wraps up another busy, memorable holiday season, I thought it appropriate to re� ect

on the spirit of giving. We are blessed in many ways here in Lake Walker, from the beauty and charm of our neighborhood to the warmth and supportiveness of our neighbors. But we are also a neighborhood that seeks to share those blessings with those around us. During the Fall General Meeting, dues-paying LWCA members voted to provide donations to six nonpro� t organizations. It is our hope that the donations will serve as a blessing to those organizations, and by extension, to all the residents of our local community.

One recipient of our support was the York Road Partnership(yorkroadpartnership.org). The Partnership’s work spans a variety of initiatives, from greening to business revitalization to the Govanstowne Farmers’ Market. We encourage all Lake Walker residents to attend an upcoming Partnership meeting!

GEDCO’s CARES programreceived a donation from LWCA as well (gedco.org/what-we-do/community-services/cares). CARES “serves families and individuals in crisis by connecting [them] with

resources,” such as “food and emergency � nancial assistance.” We are happy to continue our longstanding tradition of assisting this vital community service organization.

LWCA also contributed to Blue Water Baltimore, which works “to restore the quality of Baltimore’s rivers, streams and Harbor to foster a healthy environment, a strong economy and thriving communities” through water quality monitoring, tree plantings and other large and small-scale greening projects, education and advocacy, and operation of a popular native plant nursery on Hillen Road (bluewaterbaltimore.org).

The Cylburn Arboretum Association was another recipient of a donation from the LWCA. The Arboretum is a “200-acre urban oasis” which contains “hundreds of specimen trees and plantings,” among other attractions (cylburn.org). The Arboretum is open to the public year-round, and tours take place 9–10 a.m. on the � rst weekend of every month.

We’re trying a new location for this year’s Mardi Gras celebration! Jerry’s Belvedere Tavern has generously donated for the past few block parties and we decided to give them some business from Lake Walker.

Venture out from winter hibernation to remind yourself of who your neighbors are and share in some laughs, spirits, and food! We’ll have a cake and some kids’ activities. We hope to see you there!

You can park in the parking lot behind Jerry’s (there’s also street parking on Northern Parkway). Please use the side entrance.

AROUND THE `HOODA warm welcome to a couple of our newest neighbors, Mary Yoder and Chris Ruppenthal on Hollen Rd. who come to us from Los Angeles. But we bid a sad farewell to their predecessors of 32 years, Cindi D’Angelo and Dave Kirkpatrick who, in an effort to downsize, moved to Rodgers Forge. Just last year Dave, their son Andrew, and former LWCA President Don Halligan entertained us at a General Meeting with a very cool rendition of “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.” Cindi served LWCA in various capacities, notably as Block Captain for the 700 block of Hollen Rd. Her route is now in the capable hands of Gail Maxwell.

This will be a recurring column, and we encourage you to submit items of general interest and names of new neighbors to us at [email protected]. �

During the ongoing opposition to the proposed Burger King on Walker Ave., the Center represented LWCA pro bono. This nonpro� t organization is “Maryland’s only legal services organization dedicated solely to strengthening neighborhoods and the nonpro� t sector.”

I wish you peace and good cheer as we ring in 2020 in Lake Walker. �

City Councilperson ForumCouncilman Bill Henry is vacating his seat on Baltimore City Council. We’ll have the opportunity to elect his successor later this year. He is hosting a forum so that residents can hear from 4th District candidates. Please attend!

Productive Fall Cleanupby Jim Pickett

On the last Saturday in October, a group of enthusiastic neighbors met at the Lake Walker sign and proceeded to gather numerous bags of debris from our parkland on both sides of Walker Ave. at York Rd. We also felled and removed a dead crabapple tree and disposed of hundreds of fallen branches in the area. Finally, we repaired a long section of fencing along the south side of Walker Ave. to keep trash out of the woods. Many thanks to our intrepid volunteers: Nathan & Nona Cleanthous, Cy Governs, Darby Lassiter, Mike Magrogan, Deb & Jim Pickett, Ingrid Rivera, Lucy Sarris, and John Swivel.

Thank you also to Carolyn Anewich and others who cleaned up an alley on Parkway.

Why not consider joining us for the spring cleanup (Saturday, April 18)? BTW… you don’t have to wait for the next cleanup.

Now is a perfect time to rake leaves from the curb in front of your house and clear debris from nearby storm drains. �
