Can you help

with our building

work? We need your support to help pay for the refurbishment of

CDA. Can you help with a donation?

Work has begun on our building

in Cambridge to bring it up to a

good standard. The work needs

to be done as there is damp

around the building, the floor

was dangerous and toilets in a

poor condition. The wheelchair

lift was also unusable by some

of the larger wheelchairs and

the front door inaccessible to

wheelchairs.

Now all that is being corrected

so we have a building that

Cambridgeshire’s deaf

community can be proud. We

will be able to use the building

for more events for deaf people

and rent it out to other groups to

make more money for CDA to

spend on services for deaf

people.

Please see the donation form at

the back and send anything you

can. Gifts small or large, it

doesn't matter. Everything

helps.

Jamie Billam, Community

Manager, is leaving CDA after 15

years of service. Jamie will

continue to teach sign language

and deaf awareness in

Cambridgeshire.

Here are some pictures from his

leaving celebration at

Peterborough Drop in on

Wednesday 5th November.

He will also be at Cambridge

Drop in on 19th to wish

everyone well after the

presentation by Sign Health. At

2:30pm

Big Thank you to Jamie Billam

Thank you and good luck to Jamie from

everyone at CDA

We will miss you Jamie! It is with sadness that we have said goodbye to Jamie. He has looked after CDA for 15 years and deserves his retirement. I want to take this opportunity to say a big thank you from all of the trustees for all of his hard work over the years. We will miss you Jamie. As many of you know Andy Palmer has been covering his role and he will be continuing to cover until we have finished recruiting a permanent replacement. We have also said goodbye to Helen Money so again I would like to say thank you for her hard work and we wish her all the best

for the future. As soon as we have a new case worker we will let everyone know on our Facebook page. All of the building work is very exciting and CDA is looking as good as new. We are delighted that it is looking so good but we

will need to fundraise for it. We have already started to raise money for the refurbishment and there are more details about how you can help in the newsletter. I am delighted with our new website and soon we will have little videos introducing the trustees to the community. If you have any ideas about what you would like to see on it then let us know. I am looking forward to the new CDA Carol service this year and hopefully I will see you there. There are a lot of changes happening but it will make us stronger in the future.

Hilda Boehm passes away

It is with much sadness that we give the details of our friend, Hilda Boehm’s, funeral. Hilda Boehm (Nee Hotson) was a much loved member of the community. She passed away on 2nd September 2014. The service was at the Fenland Crematorium in March on 25th September. (Interpreted by Jan Smith.) Afterwards we went to the Gallery House restaurant in Wisbech. About 24 deaf people came to support Hilda’s family. She was born on 6th January 1922 at Wisbech. Her Father died shortly after she was born. She was the youngest of 5 sisters, 4

deaf & 1 hearing. Her elder sister died long time ago. She went to the East Anglian School for the deaf at Gorleston-on-Sea. Her first job was a domestic worker where she met Gustav (Gus) (literally over the garden fence).

He was a German prisoner of war & its all to their credit that despite language problems they clicked. They were married on 4th September 1948 and had a long & happy marriage of 45 years until Gus died in 1993. They had a daughter Mary & a son in law Brian. The family grew to include three grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was proud of her family which included a lot of nieces & nephews two of which were Peter Chapman and Kathleen Gilbert (Nee Arnold) Before they died she spent a lot of time with her 2 sisters. They went on holiday, visited deaf clubs and shopped together. Her brother in law Arthur Cracknell has been a great companion. She moved to a flat

John’s History Visit BDA Heritage Officer, John Hay,

came to Cambridge Deaf Club

on Saturday 18th October to see

if we could help him identify

some of the faces in the BDA

film archive.

BDA are working on a project to

identify the hundreds of people

on the old film footage from the

archive and John said the visit to

Cambridge was worthwhile as

some new people were identi-

fied. It is all part of a lottery

funded scheme to preserve and

understand deaf history.

Some people may already know

John Hay from his time pre-

senting BBC’s See Hear.

See the calendar for John’s other

visits to Cambridgeshire.

Christmas Carol Service at Hope

Hall There will be a BSL Carol Service

at CDA on Sunday 7th December.

Jan Smith, the Deaf Church co-

ordinator for Cambridgeshire

will be leading the event which

begins at 4pm.

There will be soup, mulled wine

and mince pies to add to the

Christmassy feeling!

Hundreds attend Debbie Powell

Funeral Deaf people from across

Peterborough and

Cambridgeshire attended the

funeral of Debbie Powell who

died from cancer at home on

October 1st.

Debbie was a volunteer and a

great friend for CDA and

established the popular coffee

mornings in Peterborough. She

met many people through her

work as a sign language teacher

and kept many friends.

The church was full with around

200 mourners. Gifts in Debbie’s

memory can be made to the

Peterborough and District Deaf

Children’s Society or Guide Dogs

via the Funeral Directors office.

Our thoughts are with Debbie’s

family and friends. We will miss

News from around Cambridgeshire Elaine’s Visit to Wine-making France I went to visit Civray with a group of people from Downham Market this summer. Civray is the twin town with Downham Market. I stayed with a nice lady known as Ginette as I spent one week at her house two years ago and same again this year.

One of the French hosts is Jean-Marie Guillot whose parents were deaf so we were able to communicate in sign language, most of it is similar and we were able to have long conversations in BSL and French sign language.

We went to St. Emilion in the Bordeaux area, where we visited the vineyards, he did the

interpreting for me on all the trips.

You can see from the photo Jean-Marie is holding the booklet 'Sign Here', inside I wrote words in French alongside all the BSL signs.

It was a good trip and I would like to thank all the Civraisiens for being so welcoming, friendly and hospitable.

Afterward we had a delicious dinner at Beijing Palace. Thank you David Kettle with your time and kind to direct us. August was UK Deaf Sport Lee and Rebecca from Living Sport came and sharing our thoughts on sports.

We enjoyed the discussion and we are looking forward The Deaf Sport in Peterborough in the future. September was quiet with most of the families were too busy with their children back to school and some of them to learn new course to gain their skill.

News from around Cambridgeshire Peterborough Deaf Club get knitting In August Peterborough Deaf Club met at Ferry Meadows for their annual BBQ. The question of 'how many men does it take to start a BBQ' is answered in the photos. Knitting in September was good. Thank you to David and Rita for all of their help showing every-one how to knit. We especially loved the fancy headgear that they had made themselves to show everyone.

Janet and Simon’s New Baby Congratulations to Simon and Janet on the birth of their daughter Eva Lily Richardson. Everyone loved seeing her at Deaf Club when they visited recently. Isn’t she adorable?

New CDA Program assist deaf people with cochlear implants CDA have launched a program

to assist cochlear implant users

practice their speech.

Cochlear implant users need the

chance to practice their speech

but sometimes this isn’t

possible to do at home.

CDA have recruited and trained

a volunteer to provide speech

training support to Simon

Richardson from Peterborough

via Skype a few times a week.

The sessions only last about 15

minutes and can be done from

home for the volunteer and for

the deaf person.

So far things are going well with

Simon reporting he is more

confident and the volunteer

learning some new sign language

from Simon.

If all goes well, we will be

expanding the programme next

year and looking for more

volunteers and more deaf people

with cochlear implants who

would like more speech practice.

As the project is being done by

Skype it is possible to provide

support to people anywhere in

the UK.

Sign Health are coming to Cambridge to talk about deaf health report National charity SignHealth will be coming to Cambridge to talk

about health issues for deaf people and people who use sign

language. They are coming to talk about their report called ‘Sick Of

It’ which looks into how the health of deaf people can suffer because

of access problems and take questions.

They will be at CDA on Wednesday 19th November from 11:30am

until 2:30pm. Afterwards, we will be having a farewell celebration for

outgoing Community Manager Jamie Billam.

Watch out for criminals on Facebook CDA would like to warn deaf

people in Cambridgeshire about

criminals on Facebook

pretending to be deaf people.

There have been cases recently

of deaf people making friends

with people on Facebook who

have then asked for money.

In once case, the fake person

was pretending to work with

the BDA and eventually asked

for money to be sent.

It is important that users of

Facebook are careful about

people they make friends with

and do not actually know and

never arrange to send money.

Tips for safety online

Always make sure that

you know the person

before becoming friends

Never send money to

people online.

Never send any personal

information like bank

details or your address

Check to see if the person

has lots of friends already

If you are unsure, please

ask CDA staff
