Straight grained hardwood with a fine texture. Very hard but easy to work with. Often used for children’s toys. Can
be steam bent.
A very strong open grained hardwood. Traditionally used for furniture in this country and for timber structures in buildings. Stains black with
iron fittings.
Pale, open grained hardwood, easy to work with. Used for
tool handles, ladders and more modern style furniture
A very durable darkish oily hardwood, resistant to moisture.
Expensive and slow growing. Often comes from tropical
rainforests. Used for outdoor furniture, salad bowls & boat
building.
Sometimes known as ‘poor mans teak’. Similar properties
but grown more quickly & sustainably.
A very pale hardwood. Sustainably farmed. Relatively inexpensive and easy to work
with. Used for painted joinery.
A hard, straight grained softwood. Very visible grain
with few knots. Used for floorboards & some furniture
An inexpensive, knotty softwood. Used for cheap
furniture, DIY work & simple joinery
