An interdisciplinary event, bringing together musicologists, literaryscholars, postgraduate students and composers interested in theconnections between poetry and music. Michael Tippett once wroteprovocatively that one of the primal gifts of the song writer is the abilityto destroy all the verbal music of the poetry or prose and to substitute themusic of music. We aim to consider the transformation of referentialwords into musical sounds from a number of practical and theoreticalperspectives, with a keynote lecture by Professor Stephen Banfield.
