Isséo!COMPAGNIE DU MIRADOR (Belgium)

A tender love story, charmingly told through a delightful display of aerial theatre. A mélange of circus, dance, humour, poetry and foolishness, this sensitive and funny performance will re-awaken in us the wonder and joy of life.

Marvel at the fearlessness and skill of these two engaging performersas they create a scene in the sky to enthral. So warm and charmingare the characters, they win over the hearts of audiences of all ages.So skilled are they in acrobatics and gravity-defying movements, theymake this funny, poetic aerial “dance” seem easy. An absolute joy.

Regis Leroy and Ingrid Swaelens trained in Brussels and Antwerp andspent many years touring with Cirque du Soleil and Féria Musica, twoof the world leaders in physical and circus theatre.

“Their duets were of the highest quality… almost transcendent” THE TIMES

When was the last time you were invited to waltz along to Verdi’s Brindisi? Or pounced upon by a man-mad mezzo? Or serenaded at close range by astunning soprano? Oyster Opera is a unique double act, combining wonderfulsinging with lots of fun and a healthy helping of audience participation.Chancing to hear a beautiful operatic voice on the street can have a trulysurprising… and magical effect!

Mayhem returns to the streets of Kilkenny this summer, courtesy of internationallyrenowned street theatre company Buí Bolg, who are back in town with their largerthan life, unpredictable but lovable characters. The Mad Hatter is looking for histea party but he better watch out for the Queen of Hearts!

Poor Maud and Bill, the lovable grandparents. The weather’s lovely but if theycould just find somewhere for a little nap…

But if you’re looking to work off those summer ice-creams, keep an eye out forthe Aerobics Instructors; they’ll have you running around Kilkenny in no time!

And still wandering around three months after the Rhythm and Roots Festival are the Hillbilly Brothers… Can you help them find their way home?

A Prelude to a Death in Venice is a “west coast concept”, referring to Venice Beach California, awash in organic salads, sun splash tie-dye and acid tabs – every John’s Place in the Sun.

Lee Breuer is one of the most extraordinary and visionary directors workingin theatre today. From his roots in late sixties radical political theatre, torecent and now legendary productions such as The Gospel at Colonus(starring Morgan Freeman and the Blind Boys of Alabama) to the verticallychallenging Dollhouse, Breuer has remained true to his unique andsubversive vision.

Mabou Mines is one of the most adventurous and extraordinary avant-gardetheatre companies of the last forty years, defined by a deep understanding of the collaborative process, their work emphasising the truly theatrical,a theatre of fusion where all the arts are given equal consideration.

In an organic and quirky mix of drama, puppetry and film, A Prelude to aDeath in Venice (Harvey’s Version) is a mythological passion of animal andman that rivals Tristan and Isolde in its iconic impact on western culture.

Trust us: you have never seen anything quite like this before. Be brave.

Nouvelles FoliesFIAT LUX (France)

An uproarious performance by the leading French theatre ensemble Fiat Lux,Nouvelles Folies tells the story of a smart young city couple, in search of aholiday from the frenetic pace of urban life. On arrival in a remote village bythe sea, they find the behaviour of the fun-loving local fishermen less thanhelpful. Misunderstandings, cultural differences, gender clashes… nothing isspared in this fresh, light-hearted and humorous production.

Colourful, inventive and bursting with energy, this wordless spectacle fromthe masters of French physical theatre promises an evening of clowning, absurdity and mischief-making of the highest order.

Following the sell-out success of Strike last year, Kilkenny Arts Festivalis delighted to welcome back the hilarious burlesque theatre company Fiat Lux with their brand new show.

Oedipus Loves YouPAN PAN THEATRE COMPANY (Ireland)

Are we more interested in survival than truth? Exploring the historicalcuriosity of the Oedipus myth and its relevance for our anxious age,Oedipus Loves You exposes the violation of taboos in our society, which weobserve almost every day, but are unsure how to deal with at the momentof discovery of the truth…

Based on and inspired by the Oedipus the King plays of Seneca andSophocles and Sigmund Freud’s The Dissolution of the Oedipus Complex,Pan Pan Theatre Company’s fearless production presents a sensational newtake on an ancient story. Set in a contemporary, imaginary suburbiainhabited by Oedipus, Antigone, Creon, Terisias and Jocasta, this powerfulperformance maximises the use of visual imagery, live music and remotecontrol direction to enhance the seething dramatic tension surrounding thetelling of a “complicated” family history and the taboo subject of sexualitywithin the family politik.

Pan Pan Theatre Company creates and produces contemporary liveperformances in diverse locations, exploring new forms and approachesand experimenting with time, space and music, with the aim of findingtheir own idiosyncratic, individual step.

With Gina Moxley, Ruth Negga, Ned Dennehy,Derrick Devine and Dylan Tighe.

Mingus Dynasty (US)

When Charles Mingus passed away, he left a unique body of work and a legacyof compositions that embraces bebop, the blues, gospel and the avant garde, initself a kaleidoscopic road trip through American music of the 20th century.Controversial and outspoken to the last, his passionate views on civil rightswere an ever present theme and they’re still resonating today, largely throughthe work of Sue Mingus and her projects dedicated to Charles’ music.

Of these, The Mingus Dynasty is perhaps closest to the late bassist’s ownconception on landmark recordings like Blues & Roots and Mingus Ah Um.Since its first performance shortly after Mingus’ death in 1979, The Dynastyhas had a rolling roster of New York’s finest musicians gathered to pay tributeto his genius, and this latest inception is no different, with saxophonists DonnyMcCaslin and Abraham Burton, the extrovert trombone of Kuumba FrankLacy and incendiary trumpet of Alex Sipiagin, and a hard swinging rhythmsection of bassist Joe Martin, drummer Johnathan Blake and pianist GeorgeColligan. Together, they provide compelling evidence that Mingus still movespeople, his music as relevant today as when first conceived in his ownturbulent times. Better get it in your soul.

Vyvienne Long (IRELAND)

There’s something idiosyncratic and engaging about the music ofVyvienne Long, be it her three cello frontline, the intelligentarrangements, or her left of centre choice of material, and it’s all deliveredin a voice that insinuates with every new airing.

It’s an approach honed during the lengthy hours on the road with DamienRice, with whom she has toured the world and collaborated in the studio. With the release of her own debut EP Bird Talk, she has signalled a desireto be celebrated as a solo performer in her own right, and justly so. Themomentum is building behind this very individual Irish musician, includingperformances at last year’s Electric Picnic and RTÉ’s Other Voices, filmedin St James’ Church in Dingle.

Our own St Canice’s Cathedral equally seems an apt location forVyvienne’s gentle hybrid, where she’ll be heard with fellow cellists MaryBarnecut and Jane Hughes, and her empathic rhythm section of pianistCian Boylan, bassist Charlie Foley and drummer Guy Rickarby.

FRANKIE GAVIN’S

Hibernian Rhapsody(IRELAND)

Is there a more prodigious talent in the world of Irish music than FrankieGavin? Certainly, there are few creative summits that remain unconqueredfor this fiddler extraordinaire.

From his first TV appearance as a precocious seven year old with a tinwhistle and the many fiddle and flute prizes that followed, then on intoadulthood and sixteen albums with Dé Danann, his seven solo albums, and the collaborations with everyone from Yehudi Menuhin to The RollingStones, Frankie Gavin has been to the top of the mountain and carved hisname into the rock face of traditional music.

His reputation has been built on a foundation of innate musicality, anuncompromising commitment to the purity of the fiddle, a meticulousattention to tone and pacing, an easy way with an audience and apalpable joy in music making that burns brightly yet.

It’s a reputation that’s set to be further enhanced with Hibernian Rhapsody,Gavin’s latest vehicle, featuring guitarist Tim Edey, pianist Carl Hession, accordionist Derek Hickey and singer Michelle Lally.

Silverio Pessoa(BRAZIL)

When it comes to music, Brazil is more than a vast country. It is a state ofmind, a magical place, where music courses through the veins of its citizenswithout impedance, insinuating itself into every facet of life. Nowhere is thismore apparent than in Pernambuco in the northeast, where they play apowerful roots music called Forró, the region’s feisty riposte to the genteelbossa of Rio and Sao Paulo.

It’s enjoying a revival, too, and Silverio Pessoa is the man driving it onward.A veteran of Recife’s invigorating Mangue scene of the early 90’s, whichfused the region’s powerful traditional maracatu rhythms with hip hop, he hascarried that aesthetic into Forró, the music of his childhood. Pessoa grew upin the zona da mata, Pernambuco’s extensive sugar plantations, and Forró isthe music of the hardworking men and women who cut the cane.

In that sense, it’s a first cousin of the blues. This is music of protest aboutlife’s travails but also of celebration when the day is done, with someaddictive Brazilian rhythms thrown in, of course!

Tord Gustavsen Trio(NORWAY)

It’s apposite that Tord Gustavsen hails from The Land of the Midnight Sun,for this jazz pianist has fashioned a musical concept that radiates thecharacter of Norway’s enigmatic landscape. This is graceful, persuasivemusic, at once gentle and robust, performed by a seamless group thatcaptures the essence of the acoustic piano trio.

Gustavsen’s songs are hymnal meditations, coloured with the ephemera ofthe blues and that yearning melancholia that typifies the Nordic sound.Bassist Harald Johnsen and drummer Jarle Vespestad, who aredistinguished Norwegian musicians in their own right and veterans of groupslike Supersilent and Bugge Wesseltoft’s New Conception, provide animpressionistic pulse for Gustavsen’s wash of seductive hues from the piano,in a three-way dialogue that is masterful in its discipline and economy.

With Being There, their third ECM release, they have further refined theirsense of purpose and conceptual rigour, without sacrificing the intenselyricism that is already the trio’s hallmark.

Eivør Pálsdóttir(FAROE ISLANDS)

You’re likely encountering Eivør for the first time. If so, you’re about to meeta remarkable young singer who demonstrates that the world and its musicstill has the capacity to surprise and stimulate our aural sensibilities.

Her part of the world is certainly enigmatic. Born and reared in The Faroes, the hardy island community of just 48,000 souls nestled equidistantlybetween Iceland and The Shetlands, its splendid isolation has left a deepimpression on this striking artist. From her childhood grounding inunaccompanied Faroese hymns and song, Eivør has developed a style that’sanything but insular, aided by a glorious vocal instrument that eclipses therange and dynamics of even her famous Icelandic neighbour Bjork. Still inher early 20’s, she’s already a household name in The Nordic countries, witha resumé that includes jazz and opera, as well as a brace of gorgeous folkinflected CDs with Canada’s Bill Bourne.

Human Child is her latest, produced by Donal Lunny and recorded inDublin with the cream of Irish musicians. The eminent bouzouki playeris back to support her in performance, along with Anto Drennan(guitar), Graham Henderson (keys), Chris Herzberger (violin) andJason Duffy (drums).

Patrick Street (IRELAND)

It’s twenty one years since Patrick Street first convened, during thatseminal mid-80s period for Irish music. Initial plans were for a one-offtour to the US, but the chemistry was undeniable and Patrick Streetwent on to create a significant body of work both on stage and in thestudio, and their place in the annals of Irish music seems assured.

The band’s original members all brought something individual to thetable, from Sliabh Luacra polkas to Quebecois reels, and that stylisticapproach is inspiring young musicians still. Today, the original mastersare back, augmented by fiddler John Carty, a previous recipient ofTG4 Musician of the Year, and guitarist Ged Foley, ex of The BattlefieldBand and now filling the chair previously occupied by Arty McGlynn. They join Jackie Daly, Kevin Burke and Andy Irvine, the stellar triofrom which Patrick Street was conceived, for a night of memorablemusic that reels back the years. With special guests Dul Amú.

Back to Balkan! (EUROPE)

Last year’s world music knees-up was all things Asian and in2007 we’re also looking East, but this time to some of Europe’smost vivacious traditional music and dance.

It starts with Yurodny, featuring the bravura gypsy violin of Oleg Pomanerov, and bringing you dance tunes fromBulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Hungary, Transylvania,Greece and Romania. Along with North Strand Klezmer Band and The Polska Dots, Yurodny have been fairly lighting up the Irish music scene with their individual take on the rich musical traditions of Eastern Europe’s gypsy and Jewish diasporas.

From Newcastle come The Baghdaddies, exploring similarterrain but with some Arabic spices thrown in, plus a liberalsprinkling of mischievous northern humour. Not men to takethemselves overly seriously, these Tyneside rogues nonethelesshave a reputation for leaving audiences in a cold sweat with ahigh octane set that also flirts dangerously with ska grooves, andthey’re UK festival regulars, including Glastonbury.

Sapping your last few calories on the dancefloor is Belgium’sGaetano Fabri, resident DJ at Divan Du Monde (Paris) andCrammed Discs, the influential Brussels label that’s home toiconic Balkan acts like Kocani Orkestar and Taraf De Haidouks, both of whom he has remixed. If it’s all too much, let yourself beseduced by The Habibi Babes, shimmying you into the night withtribal and traditional belly dance styles that wind their way downThe Black Sea. Consider yourself Balkanized!

Kilkenny’s favourite room for intimate acoustic music gets a digital makeoverin this fascinating encounter between leading electronic musicians fromIreland and The Netherlands.

Appropriately, Rotterdam’s Nanko Huisman and Dublin’s Dan Jacobsen, akaZoid, met on MySpace, where fertile common ground was much in evidence. Both play guitar and electronics, both are influenced by a broad span ofmusic from improv, contemporary and electronica spheres, and both areexploring new techniques for the organic performance of electronic music.

Between them, they’ve already amassed a considerable reputation within thisthriving musical sub culture, and Zoid, whose debut album gets a D1/Diatriberelease in September, has just returned from Melbourne’s Red Bull DJAcademy, while Nanko is already a mainstay of leading festivals likeAmsterdam’s Sonic Acts, the Rotterdam Electronic Music Festival and TheHague's State-X New Forms.

Respectively they’re representative of the musician’s new breed, straddling acoustic and electronic music without impediment, and the result is a

musical terra incognita of exhilarating beats, guitar psychedelia and atmospheric soundscapes.

Fay Claassen(THE NETHERLANDS)

The great jazz saxophonists of the past, menlike Lester Young and Dexter Gordon whoknew a thing or two about lyricism, oftenreferred to singers as a source of inspiration. If they were playing today, they’d be mightilytaken by Holland’s Fay Claassen.

The comparison seems apt, for this is a singerwho swings as hard as any saxophonist, withthe bell-like tone for which a trumpet playermight yearn. She has repaid the complimentand her 2005 release Two Sides of ChetBaker, a deeply personal homage to that latejazz icon, has seen her star firmly in theascendant on both sides of the Atlantic.

She is defiantly, unashamedly, a singer ofstandards, the immortal Broadway show tunesof Gershwin, Porter, Berlin et al, but this is noexercise in nostalgia. When Claassen bringsher elegant vocal instrument to bear on theseold songs, it’s as if the ink has just dried onthe manuscript. Celebrating the songs withher are Paul Heller, tenor saxophonist withCologne’s feted WDR Big Band, joined bypianist Francesco Turrisi, bassist DamienEvans and drummer Kevin Brady.

The Bulgarian VoicesAngelite (BULGARIA)

Drawing on a tradition of sacred and vernacular music that pre-dates the Middle Ages, The Bulgarian Voices Angelite will envelop you in theplaintive melody and close harmonies that are so richly evocative of life inThe Balkans. It’s an affecting sound, replete with delicate timbres, subtledissonance, asymmetric rhythms and the signature vibrato thatcharacterises Bulgaria’s unique choral music.

The Bulgarian people prize their songs as the highest pinnacle of humanexpression, and the nineteen women of Angelite have elevated thetradition to unparalleled heights of vocal artistry. This tradition has its rootsin the ancient civilization of The Thracians, and draws its nourishmentfrom folk music handed down through countless generations. From theshores of The Black Sea to the mountain ranges of Macedonia andRhodopes, the choir draws on the region’s many dialects and faiths tocreate music of a deeply spiritual and universal resonance.

Bringing the festival’s music programme to an uplifting close, thesedaughters of Orpheus sing songs of love and sorrow, of toil and sweetrecreation, of feasts and mourning, of faith and deliverance.

3epkano (Ireland)LIVE MUSIC ACCOMPANIMENT TO CLASSIC FILMS

Eclectic music ensemble 3epkano present original and innovative live musicaccompaniment to two groundbreaking movies from the silent film era.Following their sell-out performances over the last two festivals, this year’sscreenings take place at the bigger venue of The Watergate Theatre, an entirelyappropriate move, given the theatre’s original role as Kilkenny’s main cinema.

Battleship Potemkin(1925) DIR. SERGEI EISENSTEIN

Hugely influential in the history of cinema, Battleship Potemkin brought itsdirector Sergei Eisenstein to world attention, being banned as subversive inEngland and receiving a restricted circulation in the US. Conceived as part of acycle of mythmaking films intended to tell the story of the Russian Revolution, the entire film, and the Odessa Steps massacre in particular, contain some ofthe most powerful, best known and often emulated images of political violencerealised in film.

This performance is the world première of 3epkano’s new score for Battleship Potemkin.

Metropolis(1927) DIR. FRITZ LANG

A monument to director Fritz Lang’s artistic vision and film craftsmanship, thisGerman futuristic film, inspired by the towering Manhattan skyline, presents anapparently utopian society of wealthy inhabitants living a palatial existence, supported from underground by armies of a subhuman species of slaves.Lang’s recurring themes of psychological conflict, paranoia, fate and moralambiguity contributed significantly to the emergence and evolution of the filmnoir genre in American cinema.

Hurling at the MoviesALL-IRELAND DOUBLE-BILL

It’s summertime in Kilkenny, home of the reigning All-Irelandchampions. How could the festival not include, in some way,the national pastime and local religion of hurling?

All-Ireland Hurling Championship Final 1957KILKENNY VS WATERFORD

In this fascinating footage from the 1957 final, withcommentary by the legendary Mícheál Ó hEithir, we see howthe Black and Amber, under the leadership of team captainMickey Kelly, had to draw on all their resources to match theirsouthern neighbours in one of the most fiercely contestedfinals of the 1950s.

From the pre-match parade with the Artane Boys Band andthe Black Raven Pipers, to the lifting of the McCarthy Cup,this special archive screening will engage hurlers andhistorians alike. A wonderful opportunity to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this historic match.

Rooney(1958) DIR. GEORGE POLLOCK

Dustman and All-Ireland hurler James Ignatius Rooney movesinto new digs in the snobbish lower-middle class O’Flynnhousehold, where he soon falls for the unassuming Máire, much to the chagrin of Mrs O’Flynn. Things take a turn for theworse when he unwittingly gives her a necklace which turnsout to have been stolen…

A comic classic, the domestic squabbles, themisunderstandings and the hilarious scenes with Rooney andhis fellow dustmen are all played out against the backdrop ofthe build up to the All-Ireland. The film uses authentic footageof the 1957 Kilkenny-Waterford final for the All-Irelandscenes, with “Dublin” playing in Black and Amber!

De Valera - StatesmanSYMPOSIUM

The legacy of Eamon de Valera, who dominated Irish politics for more thanfour decades, remains complex and controversial. While his domestic policieshave been subject to serious scrutiny, his role as a statesman, establishingIreland’s position in the outside world as an independent state, and hiscontribution to Ireland’s foreign policy in the 1930s, remain subjects whichare only now beginning to be fully understood, mainly through the work of anew generation of Irish historians. The festival is delighted to welcome aleading group of these historians to discuss de Valera’s role as statesman inan emerging Ireland.

Visual Art at Kilkenny ArtsFestival 2007

HUGH MULHOLLAND, CURATOR

In programming the Visual Art element of the Kilkenny ArtsFestival this year, I wanted to see if it were possible to bringto Kilkenny work which I felt could contribute something tothe location in which it was exhibited, not site specific, butsite sympathetic. Having said that, and even taking intoconsideration Kilkenny’s rich heritage with its wide range ofhistorical buildings and landmarks, this has not alwaysbeen possible.

In the end, I have reached a balance between those workswhich are located in spaces where the history, architectureor function of the venue contributes to our viewing of thework, and those works or projects which have been sited ina range of commercial and public buildings which, thoughnot specific to the particular environment, have been just ascarefully selected in order that the environment does notdetract from our appreciation of the work, but offers thebest physical space for its presentation.

Bill Viola (US)

Bill Viola is one of the world’s leading exponents of video art, whose workreferences diverse art and historical traditions, as well as the history ofhuman societies and cultures. In his work Four Hands (2001), exhibited inthe tranquil surroundings of St John’s Priory, he depicts four sets of hands– those of a young boy, two middle-aged people and an elderly woman –run through a gamut of gestures; some are familiar and others rhetorical, some are associated with prayer or supplication, while others resembleHindu and Buddhist mudras.

Amar Kanwar (INDIA)

Amar Kanwar is an independent film maker, living and working from NewDelhi. His films respond to conditions in contemporary India and primarily

concern issues relating to violence, politics, ecology and sexuality. Kanwar’s film A Night OfProphecy (2002) explores poetry in contemporaryIndia through multiple poetic journeys that seekto unravel history, time and the future.

Jesper Just (DENMARK)

Danish artist Jesper Just taps the universal power of music to createlushly filmed, seductive works that challenge the traditional notionthat masculinity is incompatible with external displays of emotion.Just’s critically acclaimed mix of tenderness, humour, and tongue-in-cheek incongruity is exemplified by No Man is an Island II. In thisvideo, the emotional walls between the denizens of a dimly-lit stripjoint suddenly crumble when a young man unexpectedly breaks intoa heartfelt rendition of Roy Orbison’s tear-jerker classic Crying.

Mark Orange (NORTHERN IRELAND)

Mark Orange’s Rise and Fall (2006)takes as its subject the Federal OfficeBuilding in Lower Manhattan. Built in1967 and currently home to the USImmigration and NaturalizationService, it has been described as the“modern Ellis Island” and issynonymous with impenetrablebureaucracy and overbearingsecurity. Since 9/11, the building hasalso gained a controversial reputationfor on-the-spot deportations.

Eithne Jordan(IRELAND)

Eithne Jordan’s recent paintingsare explorations of landscapeinhabited by the monumental formsof the contemporary world. Callingthese paintings “monumental stilllifes”, Jordan investigates therelationship between modern man-made structures and thenatural environment in which theyhave been placed. The absence of the human figure in the workcreates an atmosphere of stillness and emptiness.

Marie Hanlon(IRELAND)

Marie Hanlon’s abstract paintingshave an austere quality which beliestheir refined and subtle beauty. Inrecent years, Marie’s interest in strictformal structures has given way to anew element of randomness, allowingthe viewer to appreciate the sensualexperience of paint.

Antonio Riello’s concerns shiftbetween criticism and mockery of the‘big’ concepts of popular culture: sex, religion and family. Speaking about theinspiration for his work Riello says “I find real artistic fascination in thepopular forms of culture: in all itsaspects, even the most inferior, modest, commonplace and morbid –actually, by these more than any of the so-called Low Culture”.

For Maud Cotter, our domestic spacesare charged spaces; charged by thesimple fact of our having used them and the objects they contain, oftenunthinkingly, day in, day out. Maud’spiece draws on the history of ButlerHouse and other grand houses, theiroccupants and the rules and etiquette by which they lived.

Cerith Wyn Evans (UK)

Maud Cotter (IRELAND)

Antonio Riello (ITALY)

Cerith Wyn Evans, Maud Cotter and AntonioRiello all deal with the phenomenology of time, language and perception. Their work is at firstglance in keeping with the architecture andsocial function of Butler House but on closerinspection there is something which is unsettlingand at odds with the genteel environment.

Cerith Wyn Evans’ sculptures evoke notions of otherworldliness.

Peter Wenger “The Javanese definition of batik: ‘a point of light in thedark’, was virtually at the beginning of my interest in art.It had such a powerful impact on my imagination thatsubsequently all my work has derived directly from it.Throughout the years, my work has been a continuousinvestigation into the aesthetic properties unique to resist-painting methods. This concern provides me with endlessinspiration, resulting in work which aims at representing the visual phenomena of resist-painting as clearly and asconcisely as possible in all their varied forms”.

Polly Minett, Paper ArtistFloating Forms

Inspired by Miro’s moving forms and a desire to construct piecesthat could move freely and be viewed from different perspectives, the exhibition is made up of large three-dimensional moving piecesof handmade paper formed around cane armatures. The paper iscreated from plant and recycled rag fibres and, suspended from aheight, the pieces give the impression of floating…

Polly began papermaking in Japan, going on to Glasgow School ofArt, where she specialised in plant fibre paper, while more recentlyshe has been creating wearable paper sculptures.

Gwen StevensonOut of their places (short film)

“At the beginning of the 21st century, we are outof place all too often as we are culturally andeconomically rewarded for enduring the wrongplace. But, what is a ‘wrong’ place as distinct from a ‘right’ place? Indeed, what is place? ‘Out of their places’ suggests our anxiety about a world where we areincreasingly estranged from our sense of place, home and where we belong”.

Born in Kilkenny, Gwen Stevenson studied Fine Art at the University of Ulsterand Dun Laoghaire College of Art & Design. In 2006, she represented Irelandat Estudio Abierto, in Buenos Aires.

provoke a reconsideration of artisticconventions, display and material. SheenaKelly’s work is about visual cacophony, exploredthrough excessive and opulent/naïve imagery, while Amanda O’Dwyer’s work centres on the1930’s-1950’s American sideshow, questioningsuch facets as humour, strangeness, violence, trickery and gullibility.
