Summer in Huntington is a time for vacations and relaxation. The arts do not take a break, but continue strongly. Huntington is fortunate that these activities

keep audiences coming to town year round.

The Huntington Summer Arts Festival offers 42 evenings of performances with something for everyone, featuring the best of local, national and international talents. Please look at the schedule and plan to attend as many evenings as you can. Thanks to the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County and NYSCA, these events remain free of charge and open to all.

Our Gallery Events have brought in new

and different audiences. Not only is there first-rate artwork by many of our Long Island artist, but the concept of the space has transformed to accommodate community happenings such as Singer Songwriter Night, Conversations in the Arts, Huntington Village Art Walk and more. This diversifies the audiences and cross-pollenates artists from the visual and performing worlds.

Grants for the Arts begins the workshop phase of our 2020 grants cycle in July. The modified schedule will continue, and allow us to have funding decisions by November. Please check out the Calendar of Events which includes many of those funded in the 2019 grants cycle. The cultural landscape of Long Island is multi-layered and reflects our diversity with a rich variety of programming.

I extend my gratitude to the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County and New York State for their continued support of

programming at Huntington Arts Council. Their recognition of the importance of the arts in our daily lives as well as the strong economic impact the arts have on a community is commendable. At Huntington Arts Council, every individual member and funder becomes increasingly valuable in times of uncertainty. Thank you all for your continued support.

I encourage everyone to continue to participate in the arts. The Summer Calendar is full, and offers excellent opportunities to celebrate the arts on Long Island. See some performances; visit a museum or gallery; create something! The arts enrich our lives…please let them enrich yours.

Stan BrodskyMarch 23, 1925--March 30, 2019

It is the saddest day.

Here was my father. A poor kid from Bensonhurst—he grabbed life with both hands and took a massive bite. At 18 he was a combat soldier in the Vosges Mountains and the experience marked him. With a GI bill he got himself several degrees: a BJ, a MFA and a EDD (I tried to read his dissertation once and it was impenetrable). He nurtured deep friendships and correspondence

lasting decades and decades. And he became a painter in post war New York and a revered teacher on Long Island and a beloved husband twice over. He became a really good painter and he knew both recognition and obscurity and he made work anyway. 60+ years of daily work. Not many can claim that kind of accomplishment. He had a hot temper. He had chronic anxiety. He was incapable of lying. He was a horrible driver. He was a passionate Giants fan (loathed the Yankees). He spoke terrible French. He was practically deaf. He had no use for small talk or irony or popular culture. He was the least materialistic person I ever met. He was extremely well read and very well informed. He was unfailingly generous with his time, his encouragement, his recourses and his love; and he could become resentful or disappointed when others didn’t reciprocate with the same furious energy. He traveled extensively. And we took a few trips together, he and I—I photographed or wrote and he painted. He told me he wanted to insert himself into the landscape. I confess I’m still not sure what he meant but I loved watching him work with his rapt concentration. We stayed in Maine. Arizona. France. He would strike up a conversation with anyone along the way—because he

was curious, because he loved people. I took thousands of pictures of him, and shot hours and hours of footage for documentary I have yet to finish. He was a little bit crazy and a f---king lion of a human being. And always, always living his authentic self. He was, as they say, ‘woke’. Boy was he woke.

One time in graduate school I called him after a particularly brutal critique of my work. I wanted to quit—a quivering 23 year old. I don’t remember the particulars of our conversation except he convinced me to stay the course. “Life is short and art is long” he said. He said it to me more then once over the years. And so it is Dad…and so it is.

The stars are rejoicing, Dad. They welcome you home. And here I am, like a child lost in my grief. The grief rests like a heavy fog, like a stone on my chest. Couldn’t you be with us just a little longer? Then I see your paintings. They’re all over your house, my apartment. I’ve lived my whole life with these paintings. So I remember—we will all remember--your skill and your devotion to your life’s work and your beautiful restless soul. I love you forever.

Dear Friends,

Welcome to “Long Island’s Cultural Capital!” The Town of Huntington takes great pride in being the home to artists and musicians, as well as great cultural events like our Summer Concert Series at the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park.

Summer is a season that is always full of arts and cultural activities, and the Town of Huntington helps to ensure that there are many free and low-cost opportunities for cultural enrichment

and entertainment close to home, starting with the free Summer Concert Series in Heckscher Park. A perennial favorite, Huntington’s Summer Arts Festival – now in its 54th year – has performances scheduled every Tuesday through Sunday evening from June 25th through August 11th on Heckscher Park’s Chapin Rainbow Stage, with additional Thursday evening concerts by the Northport Community Band at the Robert W. Krueger Bandstand in Village Park in Northport.

This summer, the opening lineup begins with a Family Show every Tuesday, starting with Cinderella on June 25th, followed up shortly thereafter by Mamma Mia! on July 6th, the Brubeck Brothers during Jazz Week on July 18th, and be sure to mark July 20th on your calendar for the ever-popular “Coltrane Day,” presented in collaboration with Friends of the Coltrane Home, celebrating Huntington’s own legendary Jazz artist, John Coltrane. As summer winds down, check out Crystal Bowersox, American Idol finalist, on July 28th, as well as MAME presented by Plaza Theatrical on August 2nd.

In addition to the Summer Arts Festival’s regular “Family Night” performances on Tuesdays, another cultural program much-beloved by families is the free “Movies on the Lawn” series established at the initiative of Councilman Mark Cuthbertson. A complete listing of the dates, locations, and scheduled movies can be found in this newspaper or by calling 631-351-3112. Be sure to make your way to Heckscher Museum, one of the great gems here in Town for their summer offerings. Check the listings in this newspaper or visit www.Heckscher.org for more information.

These are highlights of just a few of the most popular offerings. For additional listings of diverse cultural opportunities throughout the Town browse the pages of this newspaper and discover the cultural treasures in your own “backyard.”

Arts administrators find time to be one of their biggest luxuries. We are busy people in a busy world, and rarely have the opportunity to network with colleagues to discuss issues that we face daily. Huntington Arts Council will expand on the Arts Administrators’ Meet-up that was held as part of the NYFA/NYSCA Boot Camp last fall and offer regular networking meetings and roundtables.

These quarterly forums for arts administrators will explore strengths and challenges of the field, exchange information, encourage collaboration, develop connections and foster a network on Long Island. These morning events will feature a gathering of established and emerging leaders in arts administrator fields focusing on specific challenges to non-profit arts programs today.

Open to Non-Profit Arts Administrators and Educators.  Members and DEC

July 19 – August 24, 2019Opening Reception July 19, 6-8pm

In visual art, horror vacui (from Latin “fear of empty space”), also kenophobia (from Greek “fear of the empty”), is the filling of the entire surface of a space or an artwork with detail. Horror vacui uses high levels of detail to contrast with the sublime unknown. The Huntington Arts Council invited artists to reflect and submit work in line with this subject.

Landscapes: Home and Afar Invitational – Small Group Show Margaret Henning, Alexander Gordon and Maxine JurowAugust 30 – October 12, 2019Opening Reception August 30, 6-8pm

Margaret Henning’s journey with creating art began about 9-1/2 years ago. Influences come from water scenes, natural formations, and natural colors. Margaret loves the free feel of using inks for scraping and mark making on my canvas or paper to create abstract shapes and patterns. Using different mediums in her art, i.e., molding paste, handmade papers, glazing mediums help to bring her paintings to life.

Alexander Gordon is a landscape and night photographer. He fell in love with Long Island at night and now travels extensively to photograph the world in the same way. He currently works for B&H Photo and lives in Brooklyn. You can find his work at www.AlexanderGordon.nyc.

Maxine Jurow is an intuitive painter; there have been many evolutions in

her work but it is always about color. She has been inspired by trips to Australia, the Caribbean, Morocco, the Southwest and Long Island where she lives. Through memories of these places she constructs essential, abstracted landscapes. Maxine works primarily with acrylic paint on a variety of surfaces canvas, wood panel and mylar, each yielding a different tactile experience. Pieces include elements of pastel or oil crayon as well, redefining surfaces, creating layers.

Discovery Chests

Discovery Chests bring hands on cultural experiences to students. The chests consist of cultural artifacts, lessons, books, artworks and more. The cultures represented; Ancient Egypt, Africa, China, Greece, India, Latin America, and Native America. A Middle Eastern chest is in development for use in the 2019-20 school year.

Featured Interview

In addition to loaning Discovery Chests to schools, we offer presentations of the chests as an introduction to the artifacts. This provides an opportunity to teachers

to get to know the artifacts and try new activities for exploring them with students. I Chin Wong, a Chinese Language teacher at Howard B. Mattlin Middle School in Plainview-Old Bethpage school district speaks about her experience with the Discovery Chest loan and presentation.

“The students in our school district start learning Chinese  from the first grade.  They are introduced to both Chinese language and culture. We are always looking for different resources to enrich their learning experience. Because our school is a JOURNEY partner,  I was thrilled  to learn that  we can borrow cultural artifacts kits for free.  I invited Mrs. Van Bell to come to our classroom and displayed Chinese artifacts to our 6th graders.  We saw an abacus, Chinese chess, calligraphy set, Beijing Opera Mask, lion puppet, silk, paper umbrella, and much more. Students were having fun exploring them.  The students were very excited during the presentation and showed appreciation and curiosity for the history of these artifacts.  It was a great learning experience for our students and we truly enjoyed her visit.” - I Chin Wong

We celebrate America’s great contribution to world music with a full week of extraordinary jazz concerts by an exciting line-up of artists that makes Huntington THE destination for jazz fans of all types and ages. (The David Gonzalez Family show with Latin Jazz Quartet on July 16, and Huntington Community Band’s “Time for Jazz” Concert w/pre-show Big Band performance on Wed. July 17, are both covered elsewhere in this newsletter.)

Brubeck Brothers Quartet – Thursday July 17 8:00 PM (Pre-concert Interview at 7:15 PM)

Chris and Dan Brubeck have been making music together practically all their lives. Drummer Dan and bassist, trombonist, and composer Chris cut their first record together in 1966, more than a half century ago. They’ve played a variety of styles in a number of different groups, including “Two Generations of Brubeck” with their father, jazz giant Dave Brubeck. With Dan and Chris as the foundation, supported by guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb, BBQ perform at concert series, colleges, and jazz festivals across North America and Europe including the Newport, Detroit, Montreal, Playboy/Hollywood Bowl, and Monterey Jazz Festivals. Although rooted in “straight-ahead” jazz, their concerts reveal an inherent ability to explore and play odd time signatures while naturally integrating the influences of funk, blues and world music.

Edmar Castaneda Quartet – Friday, July 19 8:00PM (Pre-concert Interview at 7:15 PM)

Since arriving in the United States

in 1994, Colombian-born harp virtuoso Edmar Castaneda brings not only an unfamiliar instrument but a wholly original voice to jazz. Castaneda has taken New York and the world stage by storm with the sheer force of his virtuosic command of the harp, revolutionizing the way audiences and critics alike consider an instrument commonly relegated to the “unusual category”. He’s been acclaimed as a master at realizing beautiful complexities of time, while skillfully drawing out lush colors and dynamic spirit and crafting almost unbelievable feats of cross-rhythms, layered with chordal nuances rivaling the most celebrated flamenco guitarist’s efforts.

Coltrane Day Celebration – Saturday, July 20

Daytime Programs Noon to 6:00 PM – All performances TBA;Evening Program: Pre-Concert Interview 7:15 PM; Emmet Cohen Trio feat.

Albert “Tootie” Heath 8:00 PM; Dave Liebman Expansions 9:30 PM.

The 5th Coltrane Day Celebration, held in conjunction with the HSAF & Huntington Jazz Week, is a collaborative effort with The Coltrane Home, the Huntington Arts Council and the Town of Huntington.

The event’s theme, “Building Community through Music,” celebrates the legacies of music giants John and Alice Coltrane, who lived in Dix Hills. The Coltrane Home will host afternoon master-classes, workshops, a jam session and exciting live performances on the Chapin Rainbow Stage (full schedule TBA – watch for details on www.huntingtonarts.org  and www.thecoltranehome.org)

Saturday evening will feature two immensely talented jazz artists who both have a passionate interest in the intergenerational exchange of musical knowledge and jazz heritage.

Jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen has emerged as one of his generation’s pivotal figures in music and the related arts. Cohen has noted that playing jazz is “about communicating the deepest levels of humanity and individuality; it’s essentially about connections,” both among musicians and with audiences. He leads his namesake ensemble, the “Emmet Cohen Trio,” is a vibrant solo performer, and is in constant demand as a sideman. Possessing a fluid technique, an innovative tonal palette, and an extensive repertoire, Cohen plays with the command of a seasoned veteran and the passion of an artist fully devoted to his medium. Cohen is committed to the intergenerational transfer of artistic knowledge, history, and traditions. His signature professional undertaking is the “Masters Legacy Series,” a celebratory set of recordings and interviews honoring legendary jazz musicians. Volume one of the “Masters Legacy Series” features drummer Jimmy Cobb, and volume two spotlights bassist Ron Carter.

This performance will feature Albert “Tootie” Heath on drums. Born May 31, 1935, Heath is an American jazz hard bop drummer, the brother of tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath and the double-bassist Percy Heath. He first recorded in 1957 with John Coltrane. From 1958 to 1974 he worked with, among others, J. J. Johnson, Wes Montgomery, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, Herbie Hancock, Nina Simone, and Yusef Lateef. In 1975, he, Jimmy and Percy formed the Heath Brothers. He remained with the group until 1978, then left to freelance. He has recorded extensively throughout his career.

NEA Jazz Master (2011)  David Liebman’s career has spanned nearly five decades, beginning in the early 1970s as the saxophone/flautist in both the Elvin Jones and Miles Davis Groups, continuing as a bandleader since. His bands over the years have included noted musicians such as John Scofield, Richie Beirach, Bob Moses, Billy Hart and others.   He has consistently placed in the top positions for Soprano Saxophone in the Downbeat,

Jazz Times and JazzEd polls since 1973.

Employing younger musicians in one’s band is a time worn custom in jazz. With his group Expansions, Liebman follows in the footsteps of Miles Davis and Elvin Jones who mentored him in the early 1970s. Along with long time Liebman bassist, Tony Marino and drummer Alex Ritz, Expansions  features some of the best of the younger generation.  The band’s repertoire delves into the free music realm as well as the complex time signatures and harmonies being explored by the young artists of our time and featuring original compositions and re-worked standards from the jazz repertoire.

Come early (7:15 PM) for a fascinating “Conversation with the Artists” with Emmet Cohen, Tootie Heat and Dave Liebman, moderated by Jeffrey Lederer, Professor of Jazz Studies at L.I.U.Post and a well-known saxophonist in his own right.

Swingtime Big Band – Sunday, July 21 8:00 PM Swingtime returns with a fun new program featuring classic tunes inspired by names of people, characters and places!  The band’s 2019 Centennial celebrations include 100th Birthday tributes to jazz legends George Shearing and Mercer Ellington, plus star vocalists Anita O’Day and Nat King Cole! Dedicated to the performance of America’s greatest popular standards, SWINGTIME BIG BAND is a 20-piece authentic swing band comprised of master interpreters of music from the Swing Era (mid-1930’s through early 1950’s).  The ensemble specializes in performing Big Band classics as originally recorded, bringing to life the style and the spirit of this uniquely American music for today’s audiences.

Grammy winner Loudon Wainwright III (with daughter Lucy Wainwright Roche opening) will headline the 14th Huntington Folk Festival on Saturday evening, July 27 at Heckscher Park. Extending from late morning until l0:30 p.m., the free festival – co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington (FMSH) and the Huntington Arts Council – is part of the 54th Huntington Summer Arts Festival.

Few songwriters have laid out their lives in song as graphically as Loudon Wainwright III. 2010 GRAMMY© Winner

(Best Traditional Folk Album) for High Wide & Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project (with two previous GRAMMY nominations: I’m Alright, 1985 and More Love Songs, 1986). Songwriter, folk singer, humorist, and actor, Wainwright is perhaps best known for the 1972 novelty song “Dead Skunk (in the Middle of the Road)”. “Mr. Wainwright has proved to be far and away the most candid diarist among the singer-songwriters who... brought confessional poetry into popular song...” Stephen Holden, The New York Times.

Born with music in her genes, Lucy Wainwright Roche has been perfecting her craft for as long as she can remember. With a niche for wry lyrics and gift of mysteriously beautiful vocals, Lucy leaves fans with no doubts that her music is her own, regardless of her family’s legacy.

Prior to the featured evening concert, Michael Kornfeld’s AcousticMusicScene.com will host showcases and song swaps on the upper lawn area overlooking the stage, featuring more than 30 artists from New York and the Northeast from late morning - 6 p.m. Daytime schedules will be posted at www.AcousticMusicScene.com, www.FMSH.org and www.HuntingtonArts.org.

The Folk Festival highlights a four-day run of Americana, folk & roots-inspired concerts, beginning with a shared-bill

L.I. Spotlight Concert on Thursday, July 25. Gathering Time is like a high-energy Peter, Paul & Mary or a co-ed Crosby, Stills & Nash, with various parts of The Byrds, Joni Mitchell, the Eagles and America; a head-turning folk-rock harmony trio on the regional folk scene. With a vocal blend oft-described as seamless, inspired guitar playing and precise percussion, this talented trio (Stuart Markus, Hillary Foxsong and Gerry McKeveny) evince deep roots in ‘60s folk-rock. Christine Sweeney is a young singer-songwriter active on the Long Island music scene for a decade, both as a solo act and with her band The Dirty Stayouts. With a voice as powerful as it is sultry and sweet, Sweeney deftly handles poppy and playful without sacrificing genuine emotion. She has performed at Live in the Lobby in Patchogue and at FMSH’s Hard Luck Café, has opened for national acts, and was an honorable mention as a performer in the Grassy Hill Emerging Artist Showcase at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in 2017.

Arrive early on Friday, July 26 for singer/songwriter Crys Matthews’ pre-concert “Conversation with the Artist” at 7:15 p.m. Matthews blends Americana, folk, jazz, blues, bluegrass and funk into a bold, complex performance steeped in traditional melodies and punctuated by honest, original lyrics. Songs from her full-length album, The Imagineers and an EP, Battle Hymn For An Army Of Lovers, showcase two sides of Matthews’ dynamic songwriting; the first a selection of thoughtful songs about love and life, while Battle Hymn tackles social justice themes. Grand-prize winner at 2017’s NewSong Music Competition at Lincoln Center, Matthews also won the People

Music Network’s Social Justice Songs contest at the 2017 Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. Thoughtful, realistic and emotional, Matthews’ songs speak to the voice of our generation and remind us why music indeed soothes the soul. (This performance is supported in part by a grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation Touring Program.)

Crystal Bowersox completes the weekend on Sunday, July 28. A rising star whose influences span across folk-pop, classic rock, soul, blues and country, Bowersox makes the kind of music that resonates - both tender and tough, rough yet polished; encompassing many genres, never falling neatly into one category. And that voice! As one of her songwriting partners describes it, Crystal has “a voice like dirt and diamonds.” Her music brings a positive message of love and light to the world. Since her introduction to the world through television, Crystal has toured widely and released two LP’s, two EPs, and several singles. She has also used her talents to benefit causes close to her heart, and has become an advocate and inspiration for people living with Type 1 Diabetes.
