The Life and Times of Harold MacMillan

Friday 15 April at 7.00pm, Big Classical

Known as ‘Supermac’ for his pragmatism, wit and unflappability, MacMillan was Prime Minister from 1957 to 1963. Cheltenham College will host his grandson, the second Earl of Stockton, Alexander MacMillan and special guest Alex Chalk MP, who will give a lecture as part of the Great Britons Foundation. Tickets £25 available from [email protected] to include a two-course buffet supper with wine. Drinks reception starts at 6.30pm.

Choral Evensong and Organ Recital

Wednesday 20 April at 6.00pm, College Chapel

An organ recital at 7.00pm by David Goode follows an evensong at 6.00pm by the Cheltenham College Chapel Choir.

David Goode is the organist at Eton College, which he combines with a concert career that takes him around the world. In recent years he has also composed a number of choral and organ works. He has forged a strong link with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the BBC Singers. Later in 2016, he will be performing at the National Convention of the American Guild of Organists. He is currently recording the complete organ works of Bach on the organ of Trinity College, Cambridge.

The Tallis Scholars

Friday 22 April at 7.00pm, College Chapel

The Tallis Scholars was founded by Peter Phillips in 1973, and under his direction have become a leading vocal ensemble specialising in music of the Renaissance. Nominated for three Grammy Awards, they have been called “the rock stars of Renaissance vocal music” by The New York Times and “one of the UK’s greatest cultural exports” by the BBC. They will be performing Thomas Tallis’ 40 part motet Spem in Alium.

Tickets are available from [email protected] at £10 / £15 / £25 per performance and include a complimentary drink on arrival.

St George’s Day Evensong and Supper

Saturday 23 April at 6.00pm, Stanway Church

Sung by small section of Cheltenham College’s Chapel Choir, who will be basing the service around evocative plainsong and music for men’s voices at Stanway Church at 6.00pm. Prior to evensong at 4.30pm, guests may take a guided tour of Stanway House, an outstanding example of a Jacobean Cotswold manor that has been owned for over 500 years by the Tracey family and their descendents, the Earls of Wemyss. The famous Stanway Fountain rises to over 300 feet, making it the tallest fountain in Britain and the tallest gravity-fed fountain in the world. Following the service, guests are invited to witness the switching on of the fountain and enjoy a two-course buffet supper in the Great Hall.

SATIPS National Prep Schools Art Exhibition

Sunday 24 April at 10.00am - 4.00pm, Cheltenham Prep

Cheltenham Prep is delighted to be hosting the SATIPS National Prep Schools Art Exhibition which runs for two weeks from 23 April to 6 May 2016 with a viewing open to the public on Sunday 24 April. SATIPS showcases an inspiring and heart-warming collection of artwork by Reception to Year 8 pupils from schools up and down the country.

‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’

Thursday 5 May at 7.00pm, Big Classical

A lecture by Mr Nick Nelson, Head of History of Art at Cheltenham College, that explores four paintings focused on weddings and a funeral by Van Eyck, Botticelli, Titian and Hockney, thus spanning the period from the early Renaissance to Post-Modernism. Artists have celebrated the theme of matrimony from a religious and secular perspective since the pre-Renaissance period and wedding paintings provide an interesting insight into the dynamics of a given relationship, or the spirit of the age in broader terms. Refreshments will be available before the talk from 6.30pm.

Design and Technology Exhibition

Friday 20 – Saturday 28 May, DT Block

A diverse range of items will be on display in this exhibition of GCSE and A Level coursework for Design and Technology. The work is finished to an extremely high standard and last year’s exhibition featured products such as lamps and jewellery boxes to wetsuit storage and tennis training machines. Opening night starts at 7.00pm on Friday 20 May.

Speech Day Exhibition

Saturday 28 May at 2.00pm, The White Gallery

This collaborative exhibition will showcase the high level of artwork produced by Cheltenham College’s GCSE and A Level students, with at least one piece from every Fifth and Sixth Form artist on show. It will be open for one day only.

‘Every Picture Tells a Story’

Tuesday 14 June at 7.00pm, Big Classical

Grant Ford of Sotheby’s and the Antiques Roadshow will be giving an informative talk on a career in picture dealing and fine art auctioneering. In this illustrated talk, Mr Ford will not only decode some of the symbolism inherent in a selection of well-known Edwardian and Victorian British masterpieces, but will bring them to life via a series of interesting anecdotes about their former owners and the various works’ provenance.

Choral Evensong and Organ Recital

Wednesday 15 June at 6.00pm

An organ recital at 7.00pm by Alexander Ffinch follows an evensong at 6.00pm by the Cheltenham College Chamber Choir.

Alexander Ffinch is the organist at Cheltenham College. He studied at the Royal College of Music and was later organ scholar of Keble College, Oxford where he subsequently became a pupil of Thomas Trotter. He has performed regularly in the UK, Europe and the USA and is a well-known international recitalist with a career leading to numerous engagements globally, and has appeared in the Cheltenham International Music Festival in 2010 and on many BBC Radio 3 broadcasts.

Concerto Concert

Friday 24 June at 7.30pm, Big Classical

The final formal musical performance of the academic year sees the Symphony Orchestra accompanying the finalists from the College Instrumental Competition, which was held in the Spring Term. Winners of the String, Woodwind, Brass, Keyboard, Vocal and Ensemble categories all perform a concerto or solo movement in a Young Musician of the Year style final, which is judged by a guest adjudicator.
