IntroductionWe are delighted to present the latest edition of the University ofHull Arts Programme. Now in its fourth season, it is established asa one-stop guide to the University’s rich variety of musicperformances and workshops, literature events and dramaproductions. Come and join us at events such as the ‘Tenth GraceBlack Piano Recital’ performed by Sarah Beth Briggs in lateSeptember, an exciting play ‘Vacuum’ written by DeborahMcAndrew in October or in December the ‘Fresh Ink Festive OpenMic’ which will showcase Hull’s creative sparks. There really issomething for everybody taking place on our beautiful, vibrantcampus which is open and easily accessible.

City Showcase is a not-for-profit year-round festival of newmusic, responsible for breaking some of the best names into theindustry since 2003.
They provide a year-round platform for new artists, identifyingand developing them through a unique combination ofshowcasing opportunities, industry networking sessions andmasterclasses in the UK and beyond – all free from commercialsector constraints.
Some of the artists who got their break at City Showcase gigsinclude Amy Winehouse, Gabriella Cilmi, Keane, NewtonFaulkner, Ray LaMontagne, Razorlight, Scouting for Girls andSeth Lakeman.

This new programme of mixed repertoire, and the title of theClassic Buskers’ latest CD, MiniClassics, will conclude withTchaikovsky’s magnificent tribute to the land that gave us pasta– his Caprice Italien. Before that, the audience is treated to anenormous variety of music on highly original instrumentsincluding works by Bach and overtures and arias by Offenbach,Mozart and Rossini. There will also be edited highlights fromBizet’s Carmen, plus some beautiful Balkan folk music and anarrangement of Ravel’s Bolero, which uses sonorities unknowneven to that master of orchestration. Instruments range from theworld’s smallest ocarina to a strangely huge cowhorn as well asthe normal selection of flutes, recorders, panpipes, buzzyRenaissance things - and a small but perfect accordion.

An introduction to Stokowski’s art of transcription and thedifferent versions of Night on Bare Mountain.
Dr Tsang is Director of Performance at the University of Hull. Hisresearch interests span timbre, music analysis, performance andfilm. He is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy and thefounding director and principal conductor of the professionalchamber ensemble Hull Sinfonietta, which was awarded theUniversity of Hull Vice Chancellor’s Prize 2005.

Our Little Secret
Wed 1� to Sat 19 November 2011Donald Roy Theatre, the Gulbenkian Centre, Hull CampusOur Little Secret combines expressive acting, powerful images,physical movement, vivid colour and music, to theatricallyexplore the view of the great modern anthropologist Claude LeviStrauss that the taboo of incest was the driving force of humanity.The project has been devised with the intention to create a pieceof theatre that speaks to the subconscious mind and to oursenses. A performance that demands exaggerated gestures torelease unsuspected passions, including repressed andforbidden sexual desires.
Experience a piece of thought-provoking theatre that will attackthe senses with bizarre sights and sounds as it reaches towardour subconscious impulses and fears.
Inspired by the work of Antonin Artaud and Pina Bausch.
Warning there could be scenes of a graphic nature and may not besuitable for under 15s.

Music by Renaissance masters including Isaac, Josquin,Janequin, Arcadelt, Morales, Palestrina in solo lute versions bytheir contemporaries Spinacino, de Rippe, Galilei and others.These remarkable composers tackled the most ambitious vocalrepertoire, artfully adapting it to the lute in intricate, beautifullydecorated arrangements. It is music on a private scale, enjoyed inan intimate setting in the great houses of Renaissance Europe.
