Three Honored During 2012 BIG R Show

As J&N Auto Electric in Cincinnati, Ohio approaches 60 years in business, owner and president Tom Kuechly says they have established many goals and values for employees to embrace. However, one value helps keep everyone on the same path: “Delivering WOW! through service and selection.”

That statement is on the cover of their brochure and is listed as the top value among the many that the company em-braces (see related sidebar “Our Values” on page 8).

Without bragging, Kuechly says that as a distributor of rotating electric units and parts for every major OEM starter and alternator brand they probably have one of the best selections of products in the industry.

“I can't verify this, but I would put our selection up against anybody in the coun-try,” he explains. “Maybe even anybody in the world. I hate to make a bold statement like that, but that's kind of what we try to do.”

HDRG Summit Program is Packed with Great IdeasThe annual Heavy Duty Remanufacturing Group Summit will be held on January 21st right before the Heavy Duty After-market Week which will run from January 21-24 at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. If you turn to page 21 you’ll see what is already planned for this year’s program. You can also visit www.hdrg.org to see the latest program developments. There are still a couple of programs that we are trying to add to this year’s event.

Visit www.hdaw.org to register for that event as well and to book your hotel room in the Mirage Hotel.

HD Reman of the Year AwardAnd as a reminder, the Heavy Duty Re-man of the Year Award will be presented during the luncheon. There have been six previous winners of this prestigious award which was named in honor of the first recipient, Mike Hill. We will announce our selection of the 7th at the luncheon.

So, plan on attending. See page 21 of this issue to complete the registration form.

Discount Dollars Can be Yours in 2013The Reman Toolbox delivers UNBEAT-ABLE SAVINGS to your business. Visit www.remantoolbox.com to see the 30+ programs available to you right now. It is just as easy as one click to the site to get started and see all the programs that are available for your business.

The thousand pound gorilla in the Reman Toolbox is the great discount program with Grainger. You’ll save up to 48% off catalog pricing. The average savings is 28% off the catalog pricing. But the main feature of the entire program is FREE STANDARD SHIPPING. That you can’t beat. You’ll also receive periodic emails from them with special pricing deals on some products. To receive this you have to be signed up in the REMAN TOOLBOX.

Sprint wireless services, the ADP payroll processing program, Office Max and Staples discount programs and the Small Parcel Shipping program through either FedEx or UPS/Unishippers are all pro-grams saving APRA members thousands of dollars every week, which as you can imagine drops more dollars to your bot-tom line.

As Yogi Berra says, these savings are real money which is just as good as “cash.”

The ideal situation is to have as many of your employees as possible signed up in the program so that they have access to the discounts. Sometimes we only have the principal person in our system, but, the purchasing manager or the facilities manager who orders lots of supplies for the business is not listed. It is very easy to do by just sending an email to Nick Zuccala at [email protected] and ask him to add additional people from your company to the Reman toolbox along with their email.

Check out the FedEx, YRC and UPS ground shipping program as well which have discounts of up to 70% for you to take advantage of. Just call 1-800-MEM-BERS to participate in these three programs.

NOW, if you are not an APRA member and want to start taking advantage of all these discounts which will save enough to more than pay your APRA member-ship dues several times over, just call me (Bill Gager) at 703-968-2772 ext 103 or George Eliades at the same number ext 115. We would be more than glad to discuss the programs with you and get you started with real savings to your bottom line.

Save $100As an APRA member, you are eligible to receive a $100 discount on Lester Cata-log’s KWIKFINDER DVD and ONLINE program. If you are in the electrical rebuilding/remanufacturing business you need the LESTER Catalog. It is a neces-sary tool for your business. So, why not save $100 on your annual subscription and join APRA and receive the benefits of all the other major discount programs that we

have to offer in the REMAN TOOLBOX. This seems like a “no-brainer” to me. To start on your way to saving $100 call Les-ter Catalog at 530-823-0964. They’ll be glad to sign you up as an APRA member.

Dubai AutomechanikaAutomechanika has their next exhibition scheduled for June 11-13, 2013 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Dubai has become a central trade hub for the automotive industry in the Middle East and North Africa. In recent years there have been about 17,000 buyers in attendance. I know that some APRA members normally attend this event and some even exhibit. I would like to know if there are APRA member companies that would like to join together in one pavilion in Dubai to exhibit.

If you are interested in doing this, please email me at [email protected]. r

BREAKING NEWS: The US International Trade Commission has just released the complete 284 page report, “Remanufactured Goods: An Overview of the U.S. and Global Industries, Markets, and Trade.”

This report provides an overview of U.S. remanufactured goods industries and markets, esti-mates U.S. trade in remanufactured goods, and other factors for 2009–11 period. Though the report states that its estimates may be "somewhat low", they estimate that the value of U.S. remanufactured production grew by 15 percent to at least $43.0 billion, supporting 180,000 full-time U.S. jobs. Of that, $6.2 billion and 30,000 employees are credited to the motor vehicle parts industry.

Export of remanufactured goods totaled $11.7 billion ($581 million for Motor Vehicle parts) in 2011 up 50% from 2009. The leading countries to export to are Canada (51%) and Mexico (19%). Leading barriers to export for the motor vehicle parts industry were labor costs, transportation and core availability.

The complete report is available at http://www.usitc.gov/publications/332/pub4356.pdf

The 2012 APRA BIG R Show is over and the Electri-cal “Thrive and Survive“ Clinic that ran concurrently with the show was rather well attended. This year’s BIG R Show was side-by-side

with the ATRA (Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association) convention that is another large event. Seeing some of their booths, merchandise and assorted technologies was interesting. To see how transmission rebuilding has developed and become such a highly specialized and sophisticated industry is amazing.

I also spent a day walking the booths in the gigantic AAPEX show, looking for new diagnostic equipment, scan tools, and various odds and ends that make the show such a large showcase of parts, equipment, and services for the automotive service industry.

My most favorite highlight of the BIG R Show was the Sunday Morning Profit

Session speech by now famous US Airways pilot Jeff Skiles, who was the co-pilot on the infamous US Airways flight #1549 that ditched on the Hudson River on January 15, 2009 because of a total dual engine failure as a result of a bird strike.

It is truly amazing to see how hi-quality standardized training and crew resource management (CRM) creates such highly skilled professionals that can work, think,

act and perform exactly alike, and can fit seamlessly as a team without even know-ing or meeting each other ever before.

The details of the flight have been covered by the entire world’s media, but meeting in person one of the two people whose professionalism and skill saved the lives of 155 people, while operating a 100 ton airplane in a unique emergency situation that had never been simulated or even imaginged, even by the airplane manufac-turer, was nearly priceless. (Figure 1)

Another point that was not mentioned by Mr. Skiles was the fact that he donated his uniform, jacket and shoes he was wear-ing on that flight to be auctioned off in a fundraiser for Young Eagles, an EAA’s (Experimental Aircraft Association) orga-nization that promotes general aviation to young people (ages 8 to 17) to hopefully create interest for the next generation of pilots. That auction brought in $38,000, which was matched by Airbus Corporation for a total of $76,000! Isn’t it fantastic!

“I bought it on the Internet…”We see more and more items being brought in for repair where the customer has fallen for the low prices, and has opted to purchase a unit at what he/she presumes to be the best price on the great World Wide Web.

We know these days almost everything, including starters, alternators and gen-erators, are available at various Internet stores and that their skyrocketing numbers are growing by the day. A great majority of these Internet stores do not stock any units and are actually a mail-order com-pany, and some are fronts for the other importer/suppliers. Some may have free shipping for a certain amount of purchase, but most do not. These are of course are quite different than reputable industry sup-pliers that we most are familiar with.

Considering the weight of a starter, alter-nator or generator, the shipping cost may become an important factor in the total price that most customers do not realize. And if the unit doesnt work to the buyer’s satisfaction, then all the alleged savings gained by a web purchase are out the door, and there remains a customer in need of help.

Such cases are becoming a lot more frequent as the popularity of Internet sales rises. I can agree that a household item such as a computer, a camera, or assorted electronic devices can be purchased via the Internet with satisfactory results. However, a special-ized piece, such as an alternator or

starter that needs to be installed and work along with the other system components requires a higher degree of awareness and technical expertise to make it work properly. Generators are a good example of this—they need to be polarized and run along with a functioning regulator, and perhaps reven equire a voltage setting to be adjusted.

One can only imagine the frustration of a customer who went for the cheap price and after shipping the unit back and forth twice or more still has the same problem.

My personal way of handling such a customer is perhaps a little harsh. I do not consider them loyal customers, but instead a person with a problem unit he purchased somewhere else. They are or were somehow aware of my business, but opted for the cheaper route. Therefore I do not see myself under any obligation to take an extra step and treat them like my regular customer who has us as their first or only choice.

My usual approach is to find out if the original core is still available and offer to rebuild it. If not, give an estimate for the replacement of a unit that works and functions properly, or as the last chance, inspect and or repair their unit at prices above our regular rate, and as an add-value, offer to look at their vehicle or ma-chine if any problem exits. If they decide against any of this, a ½ hour shop labor rate still applies.

I am interested to hear what your ap-proach is in such cases. Please email me.

Denso Starter Contacted and PlungerWe had a new Denso starter that a cus-tomer had purchased on the Internet (see above segment). It was clicking repeatedly, so he brought it in to be in-spected and fixed.

After an inspection, it was obvious that the starter was not new. It was rebuilt and rather poorly. Further inspection showed that the reason for clicking was the re-builder had not used a new disc, but had the same one turned around and reused.

This may not be a serious problem if some minor grinding is done, but the discs, either used or new, are sort of directional. That is to say the impression of the cutting die in the manufacturing process creates a minor ridge on the O.D. of the disc, and if not paid attention to and installed the wrong way, this ridge prevents a solid contact between the disc and the contact points, causing arcing and occasional no start. Figure 2 (pg 4) shows a pitted disc, which was the cause of the no crank.

The plunger was replaced, the contacts cleaned, and the starter was turned over to the owner with a suggestion that perhaps he would do better to come to us first the next time he has an electrical problem, where the work can turn out cheaper and faster by a local establishment whose em-ployees are local, and contribute to local tax revenues!

Alternator Air DuctWhile working on a 2006 Ford Fusion with 2.3L engine for an unrelated problem to charging and starting, we noticed the elaborate system of the air duct that cools its 11172 Mitsubishi alternator.

The plastic ductwork collects the ram air right from the top of the radiator and runs along the entire top of the engine, then

curves downward toward the alternator where it completely covers the entire SRE housing. (Figure 3)

This by itself is not a bad idea. It would be even better if a simple in-line cooling fan was incorporated into the system. But the ductwork may become a cause of concern in the future as the vehicle ages. As we have seen the similar samples in BMW alternator applications, this duct may fill fully or partially with dust, leaves, debris and all sorts of other stuff to block or limit the cooling air. Any restriction in this duct will reduce or stop the cooling air to the electronics of the alternator which may have serious consequences.

Turn Signal SwitchA mid 90’s Isuzu NPR was brought to us to have the turn signals looked at and fixed. The truck could not pass inspection without it and thus was of no use.

Our inspection of the wiring and lights showed it needed a turn signal switch assembly. The Isuzu dealer was contacted and requested the complete VIN number, as the make, year, and model information was not enough.

Once the information was supplied they located one for us in their warehouse a couple of days away for a price of $375, which meant the total repair would be well over $600. Since it was a work truck (“revenue producing” as Barney Kaplan used to call it), the company that owned it

Figure 3 - Ford Fusion’s Alternator’s Air Duct Arrangement

had practically no option other than to fix it. Which they did and the work was deliv-ered a couple of days later. (Figure 4)

The high cost of some of the essential switches—either commercial vehicle or passenger car—has taken a leap in certain models, which makes the estimate rather costly. Add to it some exotic or fancier vehicles and the cost could be exorbitant. Where the owner of a high-end luxury car or a commercial operator may justify the cost, the owners of an older commuter car would have a much harder time justifiying the expense...and this at times puts us in an awkward situation with our customers.

It’s Your Battery’s Cable-endA 2002 Chrysler Town & Country van showed up in our shop recently. The owner was complaining about a rattling noise from the alternator and a whistling sound that was coming through the radio.

That vintage of Chryslers has all by now a worn alternator and a worn out decoupler pulley unless they have been replaced, so the rattling noise, which is typical from a worn decoupler, did not surprise me. I also thought the noise in the radio would go away when the alternator was replaced.

Well, the alternator was replaced and our replacement unit sure quieted it down but the noise in the radio was still there. After an inspection of the power and grounds, it became obvious we had missed inspecting and servicing the battery’s positive cable that was hidden under the red plastic cov-er. We only had disconnected the ground cable for the alternator replacement.

After this cable was exposed, the problem was quite obvious. The corrosion had de-teriorated it to a point that most of it was practically gone. Most battery cables for Chryslers are not available unless you buy the entire or partial engine wiring harness, so we make our own! (Figure 5, pg 7)

The cable was repaired and the new cable-end installed. Surprisingly the radio noise that had not quit with the alternator replacement disappeared after the cable-end was serviced. Lesson learned was that a little diligence goes a long way!

Bain Recognized with APRA Honorary Member AwardAlso recognized during the BIG R Show was Peter Bain who was presented with APRA's Honorary Member Award.

Peter Bain, President of Rand Premium Electronics in Miami, Florida, was acknowledged for serving as APRA’s Chairman in 2008 and for his many years of service to the Electrical Division of APRA. Pete has always worked hard to strengthen our remanufacturing industry, donating his time and energy whenever needed. When asked about his time on the Executive Committee he commented, “Our association is very fortunate to have a strong networking system in place. APRA's strength lies in its professional-ism and the diverse knowledge and wealth of experience of its membership.” Pete believes that the key elements to success are a thirst to continue to learn and the ability to adapt quickly to change.

In early September 2012 Prof. Rolf Steinhilper and his team at the Bayreuth University hosted the first World Remanu-facturing Summit in Bayreuth, Germany. People from all over the world participat-ed and found the event very informative. The 2nd Summit is planned in China for 2013.

Approximately 130 people came to Bayreuth where the first World Remanu-facturing Summit of its kind took place on September 3-4, 2012.

Together with his young, hard-working team, Prof. Rolf Steinhilper, Head of Chair Manufacturing and Remanufactur-ing Technology of the Bayreuth Univer-sity, Germany, prepared a very interesting and well organized event.

Guests' expectations were far exceeded. Attendees had traveled from all over the world to hear many different presenta-tions on the current status of different aspects of remanufacturing. The event was therefore a success, as more and more

market participants under-stand that in many areas the performance of the remanufacturing industry will lose without the re-sults and work of research institutes. This first event has brought the research institutions and industry closer together.

Between the presenta-tions, during breaks and during the evenings there were always opportunities for networking among the participants.

During the Summit din-ner the ReMaTecNews´

Remanufacturer of the Year Award was presented to Meritor. Meritor is a global automotive company with eight remanufac-turing sites in five countries. As part of a small exhibition, some companies and organizations took the opportunity to present their products and services to the participants.

The summit was opened by Prof. Rolf Steinhilper. Then the keynote speech was presented by Prof. Herbert Kohler, Daimler AG, Germany. Afterwards many presentations in di-verse sessions took place. Presentation downloads, pictures of the event and many more information are now avail-able online. Please browse to http://www.remansummit.com.

For everyone who couldn't take part in the summit but is interested in the presenta-tions there is a possibility to order the con-ference proceedings for a charge of 120 EUR. Your personal contact is Dipl.-Ing. Sandra Seifert, Fraunhofer Project-Group Process Innovation, Universität Bayreuth - FAN-D, LUP, Universitätsstraße 30, 95447 Bayreuth, GERMANY. Phone: +49

Dr. Nabil Nasr, Rochester Institute of Technology (USA) and Prof. Sheng Zhu, National Key Laboratory for Remanufac-turing (China) supported the summit and made it a real global event.

Because of the outstanding success the decision was made that the next World Remanufacturing Summit will take place in China - organized by Prof. Sheng Zhu - in 2013 followed by a 2014 event of Dr. Nabil Nasr in the USA. It is planed that in 2015 the Summit will return to Bayreuth again.

Kuechly says J&N wants to have the product a customer is looking for.

“If you call me today, it's my goal to have what you want on the shelf and to ship it today,” declares Kuechly.

Going Back to the StarterKuechly says his view of the business goes back to his father, John Kuechly, who founded J&N in 1954 as an automotive repair shop in Cincinnati.

“My dad liked the electrical and fuel systems part of the business and concentrated on those,” said Kuechly. “He built his business around the electrical & ignition systems and eventually got into the parts business.”

Kuechly says part of the reason why his dad got into the parts business was because “he got tired of looking for things he couldn’t get.”

The company was once a general jobber store, but now concentrates on starters, alternators, generators, DC motors and electrical accessories. They’ve always been located in Cincinnati, but are now housed in their eighth different building since they started. Located in a mod-ern office/warehouse facility spanning 111,000 square feet, the company will most likely be at its current loca-tion for a long time.

The company’s current headquarters is a far cry from the company’s original building that had no stairwell between the basement and the first floor. The service department was located in the basement, while the parts department was on the first floor. Parts were transferred between the two floors using a five gallon bucket and a

dad sent Nick out to travel around to meet people in the industry. One customer who met Nick took advantage of the age difference between the brothers. Kuechly said he received the following e-mail after Nick had visited a customer: “I met your grandson this week. Nice guy!”

A Changing BusinessKuechly says the expectation of product availability has dramatically increased, “especially given the various and diverse nature of automobiles, trucks, equipment, and en-gines that nobody seems to have everything all the time.”

He says demand is greater, the variety of units has ex-ploded and “you've got to have it all.”

The electrical side of the business is much different than when Kuechly's father started J&N. “Alternators have changed in their electronics complexity, and regulator and rectifiers are much more advanced than they used to be.” Plus, he says starters have become more reliable.

While the demand for remanufactured products has dropped, Kuechly believes there's a future for the re-builder if they are willing to take on whatever walks in the door.

“For instance, look at an engine coming from a manu-facturer in Korea. They ship maybe a thousand of them over here. That's going to be hard for the big rebuilder to catalog and have available at all his warehouses across the country because the volume isn't there.”

He says while it's hard for a small rebuilder to compete with larger rebuilders and the new units being manufac-tured in China and India, “there are opportunities out there.”

pulley.

Kuechly says his dad was always driven to succeed by the “six mouths he had to feed.” His father passed away in 2004 and Kuechly says, “I don’t think he envisioned what the company would become someday. He always said: 'You’ve got to keep moving forward; if you’re not, you’re moving backwards.'”

The company has 110 employees and Kuechly acknowledges them as J&N's best asset. As the company says in its brochure: “J&N would not be the company it is today without the phenomenal attitude, work ethic and industry knowledge of the people who work here.”

Among the six Kuechly siblings, only Kuechly’s younger brother, Nick, works in the business. The two broth-ers are 13 years apart and Nick is a vice president with the company and a co-owner.

“We don’t do major things without discussing it between us,” said Kue-chly of his relationship with Nick. “I don’t want to drop any surprises on him and he doesn’t want to drop any on me.”

Kuechly tells a funny story about the time when Nick first joined the business in 2000. Kuechly and his

Challenges AheadRegarding the future and the challenges ahead, Kue-chly believes it comes down to answering the question: “Where do you go from here?”

It also involves strategically answering questions, such as: What are you going to do in the future? Where are your sales going to come from? How are you going to improve your product selection and service? How are you going to grow the business?

“If we can grow the business, and do it in a profitable manner, that helps solve a lot of the other challenges that come along,” observed Kuechly.

For Kuechly it comes down to remembering that J&N is a sales organization that survives on servicing the customer.

“We can't service the customer if we don't have some-thing to sell them,” he says. “If I can't sell them some-thing that's unique or different than everybody else, then I have to service them differently than everybody else. So let's service them as best as we can and look for ways to improve that and continue to offer them reasons to come to us for our selection.”

Enjoying PeopleIn terms of what he likes about the remanufacturing industry, Kuechly says much of it revolves around people and getting out of the office to meet them. He says the in-dustry is full of good, hard working people. “The friends I've made over the years have been very nice.”

He also enjoys the change that comes with being in-volved in the remanufacturing industry. It gives Kuechly something to look forward to.

Kuechly says it could be as simple as a new alternator. “I start to think: ‘Okay how do we fix it? How do we get the parts? Where do we go to get the parts?’”

Kuechly says he could do with less government interven-tion in his business. He believes a lot of times actions are taken by the government without thinking them through. “I think they do things with good intentions, but what they do ends up hurting businesses.”

Despite those challenges, Kuechly still believes there's a bright future for the industry. “I think in any business - it's what you make of it. Everything is going to change and we have to change with it.”

Unfortunately, he says the remanufacturing industry gets a bad rap. "You might consider the rebuilding business as one of the very first "green" industries," says Kuechly. "Not enough people know that."

In terms of lessons that Kuechly has learned during his career, several things emerge:

• Do what you say you're going to do. • Treat people the right way. • Be fair.

“I would hope that I've become a better listener,” says Kuechly, “and that I've gotten better at taking care of my people.”

He also hopes that he's gotten better at “thinking some-thing through all the way and not making a rash deci-sion.” Kuechly says he's learning to “take it all in so I can make a better decision.” And he hopes he's getting better at “reading the tea leaves” in regards to the future.

J&N Auto Electric has enumerated.

Transmission Exchange Co. Celebrates 60th AnniversaryTransmission Exchange Co. in Portland, Oregon, owned by the Hodes family, is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Founded in 1952 as a spinoff of Portland Auto Wrecking, the business has had steady growth over the past six decades, Greg Hodes, president of the company said. The original building on Southeast Sandy Boulevard had major expansions over the years and a second story was added in 1973. By 1983, additional space was needed and the firm moved to its exist-ing 40,000-square-foot site on NE Martin Luther King Blvd. Today, Transmission Exchange offers the trade an extensive line of remanufactured automatic and manual transmission and transfer case kits and parts.

Right To Repair Ballot Measure Passes In Massachusetts Source: aftermarketNews staffThe Boston Globe has reported that Mas-sachusetts voters "resoundingly" passed the Right to Repair ballot question on No-vember 6th. Passage of the ballot measure causes some conflict with the law that was passed in August.

According to the Globe report, the ballot measure requires automakers to make di-agnostic and repair information available to independent shops and dealers through a universal system by 2015. The compro-mise legislation, which was signed by the governor in August, gives automakers until 2018 to comply with new regula-tions.

Following passage of the compromise bill earlier this summer, lobbyists said they would initiate a campaign to let voters know they did not need to vote for the measure on the ballot. However, AAA of Southern New England and few other in-dustry organizations began to believe that passage by a vote was in everyone's best interest to ensure consumers have a choice when getting their vehicles repaired, and stepped up efforts to increase voter aware-ness in the past several weeks.

In terms of advice he would offer to oth-ers in the industry: "Do something to set yourself apart from your competition."

One thing he encourages people to do is get outside their comfort zone. "Maybe it's just saying 'yes' to a customer, instead of saying 'no.' Maybe they're used to you saying: 'I don't work on that,' but maybe you should work on that."

Having an unusual last name in Kuechly (pronounced KEEK-lee), has been a life-time adventure. "Over the years I've en-joyed listening to how people pronounce my last name," said Kuechly. He said it got much more enjoyable on his first trip to China.

"I never knew there was a 'w' in there," says Kuechly with a chuckle. "I don't hold it against them, they can call me whatever they want to call me!"

So regardless of how you pronounce his last name, Kuechly hopes when customers think of J&N Auto Electric they use the word "WOW." r
