Annual Report—Rev. Phil Price—2014 Let mutual love continue –Hebrews 13:1

Sometimes the year in the life of a congregation is nothing more than striving to accomplish what the first century church worked on: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers” (Acts 2:42). Just striving to be the church may not make the front page of the local paper, but ultimately seeking to be who God has called us to be is of far more importance than putting forward some kind of “new” and “improved” product that we can market to the public. Throughout this past year we gathered together to consider what God was saying to us nearly every day of the week with 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Sunday classes that covered the Bible and Theology, martyrs of the faith like Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and examined what practices of the faith make us Christians. Monday and Tuesday afternoon Bible studies at the church and Bridgeview covered a variety of topics as did Thursday evening Bible study of the Lord’s Prayer this past fall and Lenten Small Groups exploring the meaning of resurrection. We also spent time worshipping God both at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary as well as at 5 p.m. for the new Fireside Café service. Whether being inspired by traditional music and an order of worship that has stood the test of time in the morning or opening our heart to how the Spirit moves through new music and different ways of hearing God’s word to us in the evening; our congregation has been willing to be led by the Holy Spirit. I am grateful to all of those who contribute to making worship the heart of who we are. We are also doing all that we can to be living examples of God’s love in action through the work of our Mission Committee and Board of Deacons both of which seek to generously feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and give even a cup of cold water to the least of these among our neighbors. So too have we witnessed generosity being lived out through countless hours given in the preparation of lesson plans taught in Sunday School and on Wednesday evenings at LOGOS. So too are hearts, souls, and minds poured into the work of our handbell and chancel choirs. And then there is the work accomplished by the Presbyterian Women’s Circles in making local, national, and international mission part of our witness to Christ’s love at work in Southern Idaho.

And last, but not least, we begun the work of making our new kitchen part of our mission through the Empty Bowls lunch and feeding the 4K for Cancer cyclists. In addition the kitchen has played a central role in our efforts of fellowshipping with and for our community through Christopher Flournoy’s Eagle Scout reception, Sunday morning coffee fellowship following worship, and a number of receptions following funerals; all of which are so appreciated by family and friends of the deceased.

In all of these ways and more we have worked at being the church by keeping both Acts 2:42 part of who we are as well as Hebrews 13:1, “Let mutual love continue.” If we do nothing else in 2015, let us keep the mutual love for one another that we have received from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ before us in all that we do for the well-being of both our congregation and the community in which God has placed us. With appreciation and gratitude, Rev. Phil Price

DEACONS Chairperson: Phyllis Fletcher, Moderator Members of group and/or officers: Class of 2015 Class of 2016 Class of 2017 Charlotte Eberlein Sharon Hayes Candee Hawk Rick Horner Kody Youree Herma Watson/Debbie Bergen Joan/Kerm Leir Howard & Marcia Neibling Ann Vogt Accomplishments: Large scale Christmas Box support to MV Alternative High School Memorial receptions/dinners following funerals Care and Pew cards, Communion preparations, Monthly Ambassador, Flowers, Urgent Needs, College/Military Care packages, Closet of medical hardware, Hospital visits Met quarterly to organize projects and support one another in our ongoing efforts. Shared ideas for “Caring for flocks” Ongoing: Our present challenge is to recognize the need for a Board of Deacons to be creative finding better ways to get things done. Re-evaluate what we do and why. Identify new opportunities to offer compassion to those in need, to those who are sick, and those who are experiencing other distress. And to let God guide us in our Ministry at Twin Falls First Presbyterian Church. Financial information: Kerm Leir, treasurer, see additional report on following page. Appreciation: Many thanks to the men and women who have served on the Board of Deacons. Their endless efforts, energy and dedication have shared God’s love throughout the Congregation and community. Many thanks to the Congregation who assist the Deacons with Communion preparations, home communion, flock care, providing needed transporta-tion, fulfilling Christmas wishes, and lending a hand to many dinners and projects. Additional Information: Each year the Board of Deacons becomes a smaller and smaller group. As we continue to discern what our most important undertakings will be for the coming years there will undoubtedly be changes to the “traditional” roster of activities the Deacons will be able to pursue. We ask for the Congregations’ continued support and patience as we seek to do God’s will.

Adult Education Ministry (Adult Strategy Team) Chairperson: Wayne Shippen Members of group and/or officers: Other Members: Linda Howar, Scott Atkins, Linda Tuley, Ann Vogt Accomplishments: Four on-going adult study groups have been meeting during the year 2014. These include a group meeting at Bridgeview Estates, a group meeting at the church, and two adult Sunday school classes, before and after worship. Plus, a new small group (support group) led by Laurie Geren formed in 2014. In addition to these on-going small groups, other group study opportunities have been offered by Pastor Phil throughout the year. During Lent, many in the church completed a study by N.T. Wright, entitled “SURPRISED BY HOPE, Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church” Ongoing efforts: We plan to purchase additional adult education books/resources for the Church Library. Currently under review are additional books dealing with aging, dementia, and Alzheimer’s. Our committee will continue to serve as a resource and sounding board for existing small groups, and to assist in the promotion and implementation of new adult studies, as needed. While much of what this committee promotes centers around Christian Education, we also help to promote studies, education, and groups that provide for the general care, nurturing, and well-being of the congregation. If you see a need and wish to discuss it with the Adult Strategy Team, please feel free to contact one of the committee members listed above. Financial information: Funding for the year was adequate, but we used 100% of our budget. Additional funds can always be used to purchase additional resources to share with the congregation and for the library. Appreciation: It is the quiet, steadfast commitment of many that make possible the programs in adult ministry. Group facilitators over the past 12 months include: Pastor Phil, Terry Nelson, Bob Parkinson, R.J. Hansen, Linda Tuley, Linda Howar, Scott Atkins, and Laurie Geren. Thank you! Thanks to the Adult Strategy Team, and to Pastor Phil Price for being a group facilitator & resource person.

BUILDING & GROUNDS

Members of group and/or officers: Terry Nelson (chairman), Mark Koffer, Gordon Harris, Bob Wright and Phil Price

Accomplishments: The new kitchen was finished and approved by the City. New windows were added to the alley side of Bldg 2 and Bldg 1, the front of Bldg 3, the Courthouse side of Bldg 1 and the Scotch Shop on Bldg 1. The lighting was renovated in all three buildings. A new furnace was added to the sanctuary and a heating/cooling system was put in for the scotch shop, choir room and deacon's room. Shrubs were removed from the front of Bldg 3 and new plants were put in on the courthouse side of Bldg 1. The roof on Bldg 2 was re-covered this year.

Ongoing: Most jobs were completed and paid for on completion. As of this time some new lights are being installed and should be done by year end.

Building Use: All building users go through an application and approval process through the building com-mittee. The following non-church groups use the building on a regular schedule: City of Twin Falls Volleyball Leagues, Magic Valley Commonwealth School, Al-Anon, Crisis Center of Magic Valley. Other organizations who use either annually or occasionally: Acorn Learning Center, Kids Count Too, Wilson Elementary Caldwell.

Financial Information: An attempt is being made to establish a fund which will grow and be there to use if a big improvement is required, such as re-roofing one of the three buildings.

Appreciation: A special thank you goes out to the many donors for windows and lighting. Without those much of the work would not have been completed.

Christian Nurture Committee

Chairperson: Scott Atkins Members of group and/or officers:

Elders: Ruth Mes (partial year), Scott Atkins Other Members: Kathy Price

Accomplishments Children: This fall we switched our Sunday school curriculum to WHIRL. It is a lectionary based curriculum, and encourages the use of all the ways of learn-ing. The children enjoy the videos and activities as they learn. Teacher Appreci-ation was held on May 18. Bibles were presented Josie Preucil, Cassie Ruby, Tyler & Addi Reynolds in the spring. As part of our tradition current Bible teachers and the pastor shared their favorite Bible verse and a unique book-mark was included. Easter crafts were prepared for children to do after wor-ship on Easter Sunday. Worship bags continued to be used on communion Sundays and during the summer At the beginning of Advent families were in-vited to create their own Advent wreath with supplies provided. Two Christ-mas ornaments to make and take were available for families as well.

LOGOS started its 8th year in September. Wednesday afternoons are filled with laughter, friendship and building relationships. We have 29 children and youth participating this year.

Camp: 2 of our children and youth attended Camp Sawtooth this summer.

Youth: Youth Fellowship events are held periodically. This year’s activities in-clude inner-tubing on the river, movie night, and a Christmas party. Graduation Sunday was held June 8th and a NRSV Bible was presented to our graduates: Delaney Bergen, Christopher Flournoy, Simon Halsell, Anna Neibling, and BreAnn Stephens. Each of these high school graduates is attending college, and our church was able to provide college scholarships to all of the high school graduates this year.

Adult: See Adult Education Committee Annual Report .

Additionally: Books and videos were purchased for the library. Materials are selected to supplement the Sunday school curriculum and the church calendar.

Ongoing: Most activities and programs are on-going in nature. A goal for the coming year is to increase efforts in the area of regular youth activities.

Financial information: Funding for the year was adequate, and the 2015 budget request from this committee was reduced somewhat from last year.

Appreciation: Many thanks to Kathy Price for all that she does for this committee and the congregation.

Fellowship Committee

Our Mission: The Fellowship Committee connects our church family by developing relation-

ships among members and helps us expand our mission of being ”living examples of God’s

work in the world.”

Chairperson: Bill Eberlein

Members of the Group: Betty Benefiel, Sarah Benton and Jan Pope answered the plea early

in the year for committee volunteers. Jerry Green has participated in meetings and assisted

on Sunday mornings. Many others have contributed by providing snacks and by setting up

before, and cleaning up after, Fellowship Hour. Harry Geist is often seen donning the blue

apron to help with dishes.

Thanks to Bob and Linda Parkinson who organized fellowship time late last year and early

this year while the kitchen was under construction.

Also, thanks to all individuals and groups who sponsored a Sunday throughout the year.

Remember that if you have an anniversary, birthday, or other special occasion to celebrate,

the committee is always willing to have you bring something to share with the congregation

after church.

Financial Information: he committee has provided funds to support refreshments at the 5

PM Fireside Cafe service. We have stayed well within our budget this year.

The committee participated in the Kitchen Opening Dinner, the worship at Rock Creek and

provided coffee and cookies to the people who helped decorate for Advent.

The Church Directory underwent one revision this year with new directories distributed on

Sunday 12/28/2014

Ongoing: The biggest challenge facing the Fellowship Committee is establishing a reliable

and sizeable group of volunteers that can be called upon to host fellowship time on a

regular basis. We are certainly open to suggestions on how to assemble such a group and

organize it.

Again, many thanks to all who help with the work of this committee. Fellowship after

church at the First Presbyterian Church of Twin Falls is truly something special that many

members of the congregation look forward to. It is a pleasure to help make this happen.

Personnel Committee Chairperson: Chris Talkington Al Smutny

When First Presbyterian experiences a year without disruption to its church staff, it’s common to take it for granted. But that positive news during 2014 allowed us to continue building on the staff’s competencies to meet and expand congregational expectations. Pastor Phil Price has finished a second year since his Sabbatical, with a positive and engaged energy level in evidence. He continues to build a persuasive worship presence, while remaining committed to strengthening the church mission. This year an innovative 5 p.m. Sunday program was initiated, featuring interactive and family-tuned worship. That’s in addition to the spiritual attention he provides to local retirement homes populated by congregational members unable to attend 10 a.m. Sunday worship. Phil’s commitment to our youth is demonstrated by the weekday evening LOGOS program, now celebrating seven years of activities and dinner for thirty youth and their volunteer mentors. Phil oversees the paid church staff, including Office Manager Pattie Lopshire. She maintains an engaging church office, managing the phone calls and personal traffic, updating congregational information, publishing the monthly Trumpet and weekly church bulletins, and directing referrals to the educational and assistance programs humming within our building. Pattie and Phil have a working relationship that generates visible synergies. Among our strongest of assets is the professional teamwork of Organist Barbara Mix and Choir Director Melanie Halsell. Their weekly music feast, built upon versatile Choir talents and musical engagement by the Bell Choir, enhances God’s word to us. We’re fortunate for the consistent harmony generated by our volunteer singers and music directors. Operations Super Zlatko Pogarcic maintains our century-old church facility in peak working order. Zlatko openly displays a positive work attitude toward church members and staff, witnessed by a smiling countenance and work targeted to maintaining a safe and clean environment, inside and out. We’re rewarded Sundays by the friendly caregiving of Nursery Attendant Margaret Harris. She nurtures the children too young to attend 10 o’clock worship, providing a safe play environment. Attracting and maintaining quality staff is critical in a personnel-intensive environment as is ours. Staff utilizes 58% of the quarter-million dollar annual church budget, so consistent job competencies and strong interpersonal skills results in a stable organization able to focus on its work. We at First Presbyterian of Twin Falls are fortunate to benefit from those dynamics. On a personal note, as Trustee representative within Kendal Presbytery, I have contact with trustees from around the district. Without hesitation, I believe the quality of our Twin Falls staff provides a legacy of positive outcomes other congregations also seek. A sincere “thank you” to our staff: We look forward to worshiping and socializing with you in 2015, while pursuing our well-tested church mission.

Presbyterian Women Presbyterian Women is comprised of two circles, Abigail Circle and Circle 5 as well as a coordinating team. The highlights of 2014 were many. On April 11,2014, we held our spring banquet, centered around the theme "Pocketbook of Posies". Centerpieces were purses filled with bouquets of flowers and favors were minia-ture purses filled with homemade mints. Our in-house chef, Terry Fletcher prepared an elegant and delicious dinner featuring a fruit stuffed pork loin roast. The Wheeler family and Barbara Mix entertained us with their many musical talents and a sing along. Darlene Annen was recognized as our Honorary Life Member. She was presented with a pin and a certificate in honor of her contributions to our church and Presbyterian Women. We attended the Spring Gathering of Presbyterian Women of Kendall in Hollister on May 10th. The program was presented by Tom and Mary Cox of Pocatello who traveled to Ken-ya to visit two small Presbyterian Churches which the Pocatello church has helped. We were able to see little girls wearing the pillowcase dresses, a mission project "Little Dresses for Africa" which Twin Falls PW participated in 2013. Darlene Annen was installed for a second term as corresponding secretary. We also attended the Burley PW's Ecumenical Brunch "Make a Joyful Noise" on August 2, 2014. New directories/yearbooks compiled by Darlene Annen, coordinating secretary of Presbyterian Women of Kendall were distributed at the fall gathering in Pocatello on September 27, 2014 The Birthday Offering dedication service was held on May 1, 2014 and was hosted by Abi-gail Circle. The birthday offering is collected each year to celebrate the blessings in the lives of Presbyterian Women. 2014 recipient of the offering was Blue Corn Mothers Alli-ance. This gift will allow this ministry in Albuquerque to offer culturally-appropriate ser-vices for Native American women who have experienced domestic violence. Both Circle 5 and Abigail Circle hosted summer coffees (potluck brunch socials) which were well attended. Great food and fellowship were enjoyed by all. A special thanks to Linda Tuley and Susan Harris for opening their homes to Presbyterian Women for these events. Circle 5 chose a local mission project in the fall which involved providing school shoes for children in Twin Falls. After learning of the large number of homeless students in the Twin Falls School District, we decided to see what we could do to help. We contacted the At-risk Services/Homeless Coordinator and found that the greatest need was shoes. Many chil-dren are unable to purchase shoes and often become bullied or teased because of the con-dition of their shoes. Not only does this affect their self-esteem but hinders their ability to function when their feet are sore or cold. Circle 5 set a goal to purchase 20 pair of shoes and socks and asked the congregation for their help. They not only met their goal but dou-bled it. Fifty two Payless Shoes gift cards in the amount of $20.00 each were donated to the At-risk Services/Homeless Coordinator. She will disperse them on an as need basis. Cir-cle 5 also collected and donated school supplies. This project continues to grow as hair-cuts by a local hair dresser have now been donated along with polar fleece blankets. Circle 5 and various members donated and constructed the blankets. Thank you Congregation!!

19

Presbyterian Women continued Circle 5 hosted a well attended potato bar as a thank you to the congregation for their gen-erous support of their shoe project. (see Pictures) Circle 5 donated $100.00 to the Thank Offering which is a PW offering collected in the fall of each year that gives women a tangible way to express their gratitude for the special blessings in their lives. At least 40% of this offering supports health ministries throughout the world. The remaining 60 % funds projects such as agricultural development, elderly care, employment training, literacy and many more.

Abigail Circle chose a mission project entitled "Gift of the Heart Kits". They prepared and donated both hygiene and school supply kits to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Pro-gram. These kits are in preparation for any disasters in the coming months. The kits were sent to the Ferncliff Disaster Assistance Center in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Abigail Circle completed their Bible Study, An Abiding Hope and began a new study, Recon-ciling Paul. Both Bible Studies are facilitated by Phil Price.

Circle 5 continues to manage the Scotch Shop. Donations were made to the kitchen, LOG-OS, shoe project, refugee center, veterans, and CAMP. Circle 5 extends a huge thank you to the congregation for their support through donations and purchases! You are our life line.

Respectfully Submitted, Darlene Annen, Betty Benefiel, and Colleen Miltenberger

Chancel Choir

Members of the choir: Betty Mulconery, Kelly Probasco, Caitlyn Probasco, Linda Tulley, Susan Waters, Marty Mead , Margie Howard, Rene Horner, Suzanne McCampbell, Jan Pope, Sarah Benton, Jerry Green, Bob Parkinson, John Bonnett, Chris Flournoy, Kerm Leir, Gordon Harris, Ray Harris, Phil Kin-nison, Wayne Shippen, Terry Fletcher, George Halsell Accomplishments: The choir provided a choral anthem and choral benediction for worship services from Sep-tember through May. Ongoing Efforts: We are always recruiting new singers for our group. Interested persons may come to re-hearsal on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. We do not hold auditions. It is our goal by Easter of this year to purchase new choir robes for our singers. Achieving this goal will be possible thanks to a generous donation to the choir from Dick and JoAnn Ir-win. Our current maroon-and-beige robes are approximately 16 years old, and these robes will be sold or donated to a choir having a need for them. The choir will choose our new robe style from recommendations provided by a committee made up of volunteers from the choir. Several in our group who sew will be creating reversible stoles (worn around the neck) to reflect the different seasons of the church calendar. Funding: The choir director used a substantial portion of this year’s budget to purchase 10 new choral anthems for the choir to learn and share with our congregation. Appreciation: Each member of the Chancel Choir of First Presbyterian Church has his/her own reason for being so dedicated to our group. Suffice to say that our singers are a talented bunch com-mitted to enhancing our Worship service through choral music each week. Barbara Mix, who accompanies on both piano and organ, makes it possible for the choir to perform a wide va-riety of music. We are so fortunate in that regard. Melanie Halsell, Chairperson

Church Office

Accomplishments: Well over a year has past and I am happy to continue as your church administrative assistant. Weeks and months seem to fly by as the seasons complete their cycle. The church office has been re-arranged for a more approachable, welcoming environment. The tall desk was re-purposed as a copy center which Pastor Phil and I use and love the handiness of the close proximity to the copier. The large central desk is back in its place of formidable presence, and is quite lovely as a main work surface. Missing is the large white-board calendar and obstruction of the view to the door.

Ongoing Efforts: Day to day operations continue with support first to Pastor Phil and the Board of Elders, then to members, deacons and other committees. The Trumpet continues to roll forth and I appreciate your submissions and suggestions. I look forward to receiving news articles from the congregation, committee chairs and church leaders to keep the Trumpet up to date and pertinent to recipients. Send jpg. formatted photos and I would be happy to include them as I have the space. Weekly bulletin announcements are also appreciated in a timely fashion to meet printing deadlines.

Funding: The office supply expenditures were well under budget this year.

Appreciation: Many hands are involved on a weekly basis to assist in the financial, operational and worship portions of church operations. I am blessed to work with so many of you who give selflessly of your time and talents in making sure the church is run with efficiency and remains fiscally sound. I appreciate the opportunity to work with Pastor Phil Price who is a kind and good natured supervisor. He is patient in teaching me doctrine and ideas I am unfamiliar with and is a fount of information on a myriad of other subjects. This church is very blessed to have Zlatko Pogarcic as our caring and competent custodian and for dear Margaret Harris, our nursery leader and for the much talented Barb Mix and Melanie Halsell in the music depart-ment. I look forward to a new year and working with so many of you who have become dear friends. Please stop by when you are in the church or neighborhood to say hello.

God Bless, Pattie Lopshire, Administrative Assistant

Those we love remain with us for love itself lives on.

Cherished memories never fade because a loved one is gone.

Those we love can never be More than a thought apart.

For as long as there is a memory They’ll live on in our heart. -anon
