Already impacting 1750 lives

What is the issue? We believe that the two main drivers for development and poverty reduction are Energy Access and Education. Energy access can dramatically improve quality of life. Education can help children to build a better future and contribute to the development of their countries. Nonetheless there is still very little quantitative evidence of the impact of energy on education and neither a structured framework that fosters the education environment to favor energy access.

What is the magnitude or severity of the issue? More than 1.2 billion people worldwide currently do not have access to any source of electricity. By 2030 global energy demand is expected to grow by 30% and more than 95% of this growth will come from developing countries.

Who is affected by the issue? This issue dramatically affect children. We estimate that around 93 million children in the school age living in rural areas of Sub-Saharan Africa have no electricity to study after the sun goes down. Their families pay more than $40 billion per year for heavily polluting and dangerous kerosene lamps, thus forcing the parents to minimize the study hours of the pupils.

Why is this issue so urgent? These 93 million children that could study are 93 million potential ways to foster the development of these countries. Furthermore, about 3.5 million people, mainly women and children, die each year from respiratory illness due to harmful indoor pollution caused by kerosene. This represents more than double the deaths attributed to malaria (1.2 million) or to HIV/AIDS (1.5 milion).

Guinean students study under the lights of the Conakry airport parking lot. Though they are dim, the lights are among the few in the electricity-starved capital that are sure to be on in the evening.

Page 64: Annual Curators Meeting - Global Shapers Porto Alegre Hub

www.eprize.com

There is a strong connection between clean energy diffusion and access to education and culture. The high lighting cost in developing countries has a direct impact on the study hours of the children. But the school also represents the perfect social environment and a powerful interconnection of many other networks to foster a sustainable diffusion of clean lighting.

What were your goals?Conceive a large-scale and economically sustainable energy access program, based on renewable energy for powering education access whilst reducing the gender-gap.

How did you execute your project? We will provide the schools with solar lanterns and the children will be able to borrow these to take home, replacing the kerosene and open fire they currently use to get light. The lanterns are brought to the school on a daily basis for recharging and families are offered the opportunity to buy them over an extended period by paying a small fee on a daily basis, based on the savings they have on fuel. Once a lantern is fully paid, we will provide a new one to the school for the same procedure to be repeated. New life enhancing technology is introduced, a local demand is allowed to form, and the new lamps can be multiplied over time, with an exponential impact.

What did you learn about working with your team of Global Shapers within your Hub?We learned that distances don’t matter and that the passion and the determination to make the World better can overcome any boarder, especially when facing global issues of this scale.

What is your solution?

Page 65: Annual Curators Meeting - Global Shapers Porto Alegre Hub

www.eprize.com

The first phase of the project taking place in Kenya foresees the installation of 350 solar lamps with a “randomized control trial” and the evaluation of a number of indicators, such as school grades. An in-depth survey with the students will be done to better clarify the impact on the school results. .How many lives will be positively impacted by your Hub Project?According to our business plan, we have estimated that each solar lamp will affect the lives of 4-5 people: the student plus his family. Thus, we estimate that the solar lamps have an impact on 350 children and a total of 1750 people.

What was the financial investment required to deliver your solution? The investment so far has been approximately 16,000 USD. A significant portion of these funds were necessary to cover the academic and research costs related to this pilot project, that is the cost of the surveys with the students and logistics in the rural areas of Amboseli Park. These two components constitute approximately 40% of the budget.

What was your return on investment? We assume that once optimized the model will allow to have a conversion factor of 100-120 new lamps for any initial batch of 100 lamps in the span of two school terms, thanks to the savings from the fuel and the possibility a buying the lamp over time. Moreover, each lamp has an over impact on 4-5 people.

What were your results?

Page 66: Annual Curators Meeting - Global Shapers Porto Alegre Hub

www.eprize.com

How could each grant expand the impact of your project?

The fuel savings obtained with the solar lamps are the key driver to build an economically sustainable business model. The model is based on an initial batch of lamps, which are repaid with the savings over a certain period of time. The repayment model is built in such a way that part of the fee goes to repay the initial batch provided by Powering Education, whereas part goes to support local operations as well as to allow the purchase of new lamps, with the creation of an entrepreneurial and self-sustaining framework (see cash flow in slide 4 for a batch of 100 lamps). The grant will allow Powering Education to leverage the terrific work done so far with the assessment study and to maximize the results with a focus on scalability issues and on how to optimize the model and replicate it over time. Furthermore, a significant attention will be paid on building an entrepreneurial set of skills and mindset within the local communities for managing the operations over time, in order to create a true self-sustaining model. This will be embodied by what we called the “Solar Mentors” appointed as agents to promote the benefits of social lighting to their students

Potential Impact of a $50,000 grant:§ Capacity Building & Training§ Kenya, three projects each with:

§ First Batch 200 lamps – 400 lamps after 24 weeks approximately

§ Export the model to other countries (e.g. Guinea):§ First Batch 200 lamps – 400 lamps after 24 weeks approximately

§ Total Lives impacted: ~10.000 after one year

Potential Impact of a $10,000 grant:§ Capacity Building & Training§ Kenya, one project with:

§ First Batch 200 lamps – 400 lamps after 24 weeks approximately

§ Total lives impacted: ~2.500 after one year

“Black out” Why Energy Access & Education?

“Black out” represents a metaphorical as well as physical journey in one of the world’s most energy deprived countries: Guinea Bissau. The documentary perfectly depicts the numerous difficulties children in energy poor places must face in order to achieve their dreams and even to just get their school work done and how a

small object like a solar lamp could dramatically change their lives. By showing this document about Guinea, located in the other side of the continent with respect to Kenya, we want to further convey the scale of the issue faced by Powering Education.
