A PONTE CONFERENCE – PANEL DISCUSSION
Our financial system has not yet been adapted to the needs of PMEs
and entrepreneurs, and it is often an additional cause to social exclusion.
We should therefore work not only to improve the offer, but also to
increase the quality of the demand.
Our education system does not address the attitude and skills needed to
develop entrepreneurial behaviors. Mozambican youth are scarcely
capable to influence policies and lack a real platform to express their
needs and their voice.
International companies understand the need to involve SMEs along their
value chain, committing time and resources to develop their capacity.
Different sectors could do that in different scale and with a broad range of
approaches. Food and Beverage industry is certainly different than
industrial projects.
Companies involved with industrial projects are trying to build a
database of companies/SMEs to work with. Nevertheless, there is a big
gap between the offer of SMEs and the quality of service provided. In
sectors like Energy, Oil & Gas we could re-think of some of our tender
requirements, but we cannot compromise on quality and safety.

How SMEs can tap into the needs of big corporations and
integrate their value chain?

OTHER EVENTS: Gapi: After meeting the selected entrepreneurs during a private event hosted at CoWorkLab
Maputo on September 9th, Gapi requested a profile of each SME to organise a meeting to
evaluate opportunities through which the institution could partner or offer support.
Cloud Digital Arts offers a free training session on “Digital Marketing strategies and Branding” to the Top10
selected entrepreneurs to increase their online positioning. The company will then present their product
offering customized to the needs of local SMEs, which will be promoted on our network of young
entrepreneurs.
The Business Angels Association of Mozambique will host a pitching session of the young entrepreneurs
on the 26th October 2016. The event aims at exposing the selected companies to a panel of potential
investors as well as to potential partners and mentors.
During the event, Dr Souto, General Director of Gapi explained the reasons to partner with the Global
Shapers Community in Maputo to strengthen a platform to support youth entrepreneurship.
Mcel: Mcel mKesh launched a business case competition which was open to all entrepreneurs in our
network. The enterprises will have one month to submit a viable proposal to develop the product required by
the company. The successful one will be awarded the contract to develop and implement the solution.
Our top10 entrepreneurs will receive a capped amount of mKesh credit on their Mcel number and discounts
on their company contracts for the next 1 year.
The Global Shapers Community in partnership with ISCTEM will curate a local event for students with an
interest towards entrepreneurship during the Global Entrepreneurship Week in November 2016.
