This program meets requirements for the Aging Waiver Program. Just as CPR helps you assist an individual
having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or
substance use-related crisis. In the Mental Health First Aid course, you learn risk factors and warning signs
for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis
situations, and where to turn for help. (Limited Space—Sign up early...only 30 participants may register!)

Partnerships & Revenue for Senior Centers” Presented by Stephen Forbus
Do you have a comprehensive plan to increase revenue, develop new programs, foster new partnerships, and
significantly grow the number of your center’s members? This all-day workshop will cover the seven steps
every senior community center needs for long-term, sustainable success: board development, strategic
planning, program development, partnership development, revenue diversification, marketing & publicity, and
cultivating new leadership. Get the most out of your board of directors, learn how to create an advisory
board of community-engaged business men and women, and create programs that attract younger seniors.
Informative and hands-on, this workshop has something for every center manager, board member, and AAA
administrator.

Shannon will address communication and stress management. She will identify responses to change the stress,
the frustration bell curve and the five stages of learning, how to respond to change in a constructive way, and
ways to read people so you can determine if the meaning of your communication is being received as intended.

The annual business meeting of PASC will be held including election of board members and introduction of
new officers, nominations for openings from the floor. Roy will give an update on current state business.

Did you ever wonder why certain food items can’t be put on the menu? Scott will share great
information on the “why’s and why not’s” so you can better explain the requirements to our center
members.
2. “Some Things Never Change...Intimacy & Desire” - Casey Pinto, PhD, MPH, CRNP Assistant
Professor, Department of Public Health Sciences at Penn State University
It may strike some as surprising, but the rates of sexually transmitted disease (STD) in older adults a
are rising. Older people who are sexually active may be at risk for diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea,
chlamydial infection, genital herpes, hepatitis B, genital warts, and trichomoniasis. Come hear how and
what we can tell our clientele about safe sex!

Bullying is defined as an intentional and repetitive behavior involving an imbalance of power or
strength. It has been recognized for years as a problem among school children but recently bullying
among seniors has been occurring in senior facilities and daycares. Research indicates that between
10%-20% of residents have experienced some form of bullying from their peers. This causes emotional
distress for not only the targets, but for the other residents and staff. We must address it because
everyone has the right to feel safe and secure where they live, places they attend, especially in their
golden years.
3:15-4:00: Breakout Sessions
1. “Nutrition Myths” - Jill Campbell, Contracted Dietician with PDA
We all ask these questions, “Are we able to add seasonings to the catered food?”, “Can we add a food
item to the meal and charge the members for it?”, or “Can we place seasonings out for the members to
use?” Jill is here to answer all of those and many more questions you may have about food service at
your center.
2. “Some Things Never Change...Intimacy & Desire” (Repeat of the earlier session.) - Casey Pinto
7:00-9:00: Funny Fundraisers – This is a 90 minute, 2 act evening entertainment that is included
in your conference fee. David Kaye will explain the company, how your center could raise money by
having them as a fundraiser event, & provide a comedy show for you!

9:45-11:30: Opioid Panel: Panelists are: Cindi Coffman, Cove Forge; Atty. Joanne Clough; Angela Cook;
and Karlene Shugars, Program Specialist at Drug & Alcohol Services for Centre County: The panelists
will discuss the whole societal issue of the opioid crisis and how it is effecting the older adults we serve.
Did you know that 85,000 grandparents are raising their grandchildren in PA? Many of these numbers are
due to this epidemic. You will learn about the physical signs of addiction, statistics, the dangers of opioid
pain medications, the need to safeguard your prescriptions, the importance of disposing of unused
medications in an environmentally safe manner, the impact of new prescribing guidelines on individuals with
chronic pain issues, enabling issues/concerns, the role grandparents and other family members are playing
in assuming parenting responsibilities due to parent’s addiction, and resources to support grandparents
who are stepping in to serve as parents.

PASC Member Discounts For New and Renewing Members *** If you are a PASC Member who attends all three (3) days, the Conference Fee would be $275!
Cancellations and Refunds A 15% cancellation fee will be charged for all cancellation requests received in writing no later than October 1. There will be no refunds after that date. Payment must be received before the Conference begins or you must be prepared to pay on-site for an additional charge. Attendance will not be permitted if payment is not received.
Conference Attire Dress for the conference is casual and relaxed for all sessions and meals. Wear comfortable shoes for “The Change of Pace Challenge” after lunch on Thursday, October 4th. Bring a jacket and umbrella if it is raining! NOTE: Because room temperatures may vary, you may want to bring a light sweater or jacket.

The Pennsylvania Association of Senior Centers (PASC) is a statewide, professional, non-profit organization dedicated to the enhancement of Senior Centers for the benefit of older adults. The organization was started more than two decades ago by a group of visionaries who recognized the importance of properly staffed and organized
senior centers across the Commonwealth. Their vision extended into areas important to the successful operations of senior centers and to the communities that support them.
PASC has set for itself the mission to:
Provide professional training towards the enhancement of Senior Centers.
Promote communication with policy makers in the Commonwealth.
Educate the public about the crucial role of Senior Centers.
Work cooperatively with the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and Long Term Living, and Pennsylvania Association of Area Agencies on Aging (P4A)
Offer ideas and information for improving the operations of Senior Centers
Optional Late Afternoon Activity at the 2018 PASC Conference
Happy Valley Vineyard & Winery
Tasting Join us for a tasting of five different wines at Happy Valley Vineyard & Winery on Thursday,
October 4, 2018, from 4:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m. There will be dry and sweet wines to taste! We will be
told a brief history of the winery and educated on the wines produced here. There will be
opportunity to purchase Artesian Crackers, Amish Made Cheese and Salami, if you desire, as well as
purchasing wine to take home!
The transport van will leave promptly at 4:30 p.m. from outside the front entrance of The Nittany
Lion Inn. Space is limited so early registration is encouraged. The cost is $20.00 and a tip is included
for the van driver in this fee.
Happy Valley Vineyard & Winery is located in State College, PA. They produce specific varietals that
transforms well into our stylistic wines. They strive for perfection in the vineyard as well as in the
winery which in turn produces flavorful crisp clean wines.
Happy Valley Vineyard was established in 1999 with an initial three acres of vines on land initially
settled for farming in the 1850's.
The vineyard has more than tripled in size at 9.5 acres and consists of white and red cultivars that
are well adapted to the continental climate of Centre County and to the limestone soils of our
farm. Enologists state that "wine is made in the vineyard" so they have been growing premium grapes
that produce wines with distinctive varietal character.
The winery was built in the summer of 2010 and their first vintage followed in the fall of 2010. They
grow 90% of the grapes that they use to make the wine so they consider themselves "Farm to
Bottle". Since they grow over 10 different cultivars they can produce many different wines of
varying styles. Anything from dry fruity whites to oaky full-bodied reds, of course every one's
favorite Appalachia Red which is a sweet blend, and even an award-winning Ice Wine.
