The Office of the eSafety Commissioner The eSaftey Commissioner is responsible for promoting online safety for all Australians. The office is committed to helping all Australians have safer, positive experiences online—just as they would offline. It co-ordinates and leads the online safety efforts of government, industry and the not-for profit community. It has a broad remit which includes providing: a complaints service for young Australians who experience serious cyberbullying, identifying and removing illegal online content and tackling image-based abuse. The office also provides audience-specific content to help educate all Australians about online safety including young people, women, teachers, parents, seniors and community groups. Its goal is to empower all Australians to explore the online world—safely. Their website has some fabulous resources for parents and for teachers – check it out at: https://www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources I refer parents to this especially after our recent Digital Tattoo incursions for Grades 3-6 and parent information session conducted by Leigh from BATForce.

Curriculum and Meet the Classroom Teacher Evenings Coming up Next Week, 6:30pm Monday 25th Feb – Prep Tuesday 26th Feb – Grade 1 and 2s (separately delivered) Wednesday 27th Feb – Middles Thursday 28th Feb – Seniors We hope all parents can come along to these important sessions. Classroom teachers will share details of classroom curriculum arrangements, daily routines, homework, upcoming events and alike. Specific sessions will be conducted in the specific communities (eg: Prep session in Prep building). A combined time together for parents initially will be followed by a chance to visit your child’s classroom, talk with the classroom teacher and become more familiar with the learning environment and the resources within.

Planned Upgrade to Playground on Lower Terrace School Council have supported the allocation of funds to upgrade this playground and we hope plans to do so will be finalised in the coming weeks. It is proposed to remove the deteriorating soft fall mulch here, add new timber edging, install new seating, repair some of the actual play equipment and spread new soft fall mulch. An enthusiastic team of parents will tackle most of the tasks and we invite other interested parents to offer their support – some of the works will commence soon and perhaps a ‘big working bee event’ will be needed to ensure that the playground is not out of action for too long. Stay tuned for further notification of additional details and dates. Plans are also in place to install new bike rack facilities, as we strongly encourage all student cyclists to lock their bikes everyday!

Gunyah Reopened After a big tidy up and clean out, the Gunyah has reopened for students to play in during recess and lunchtimes. We had been using this space over the past 12 months to store furniture and excess resources during and after the recent refurbishment project in the Juniors/Admin Building. Students (especially Preps and their Grade 5 Buddies) can use this play space to spend time drawing and colouring-in, reading books, talking with friends, playing games and socialising as an option to other outdoor play spaces. Some of our Senior students have helped to get the Gunyah ready for its re-opening: Thank you! Donations of old toys, books, blocks, puzzles, etc are welcomed and will help this space to remain relevant.

Parking in Purrumbete Avenue This year we have seen some parents begin to park on the ‘No Standing’ side of Purrumbete Ave which is making it dangerous for school drop offs and pickups. Parking inspectors often are in our local area and this could become an expensive issue for offenders. Please consider parking in other locations around the school, perhaps coming into and out of this narrow dead end avenue is problematic and should be avoided? Some parents have said that they purposefully park a block or two away and then either walk their children to and from there or ensure this can match up using the Strachan Avenue crossing or no main streets to cross and the children can be self-sufficient: that way they avoid needing to find a park in the most congested areas around our school each morning and/or afternoon.

5 Tips to Help Get Ready for School in the Morning Getting your child ready for school in the morning can be stressful – school lunches, forgotten permission slips, packing schoolbags – but it doesn’t have to be. Here are 5 tips to help you and your child get a great start to the day! Early to Bed, Ready to Rise: When your child gets enough sleep, they are more likely to wake up cheerful, energetic and ready to learn at school. If you have to drag your child out of bed in the morning, they might not be getting enough sleep. Check out the Raising Children Network’s great information about sleep for children. Helping Hands: Encourage your child to get themselves ready as much as possible. Instead of doing everything yourself, teach your child to do tasks like brushing their teeth and hair, packing their bag and making their bed. They may not be as fast or as good as you at the beginning, but keep encouraging their independence and responsibility – it will free up time for you to do other things! Be Prepared: Take the pressure out of the morning routine by getting prepared the night before. Anything that doesn’t need to be done in the morning can be done the night before – for example, making lunches, packing bags and reading/signing notes. Remember to encourage your kids to do some of these tasks independently too, such as packing their schoolbag and getting their clothes and shoes ready before they go to bed. Keep it Simple: Try to keep your morning routine as simple as possible on school days. Save non-essential tasks and chores for evenings and weekends when you have more time – folding the laundry and mopping the floor can wait! Try to keep breakfast simple too – quick nutritious options like wholegrain cereals, fruit and yoghurt are great. If the breakfast things are in easy reach, you can encourage your kids to make their own breakfast (and even clean up afterwards!). Make a Plan: Some families find it helpful to develop a morning schedule that puts all these ideas together. It often works well if you involve your children in making the schedule –making a list of the morning tasks, who needs to do what, and what time things need to be done. Turning your schedule into a chart can help keep your child focused on the things they need to do and encourage them to feel responsible for getting to school on time. You can make your own chart together, or download one from the Internet. Once your child gets into the swing of things, you should find you’ll need to remind less, and praise a lot more – a much more pleasant start to the school day! Good luck!

Middles Swimming Program

This year our Middles students will participate in a one week Swimming Program during Term 2 from Monday 29th April – Friday 3rd May (five days). Consent forms will be sent home with students next week with payment due back before the end of Term 1 due to a short first week back at school in Term 2. Students will swim for 40 minutes per day and the cost for the program will be confirmed next week. The cost will be subsidised due to funding received from the Department of Education & Training. Art News Thank-you to those people who have organised an Art Smock. Please come and see me if you have lost yours or need help

sourcing one. We would like every student to have an Art Smock.

Art supplies- we are collecting the following items -

Plastic squeeze sauce bottles-they have a perfect twist and close lid for storing paints.

Ice-cream containers and lids

Plastic lids from milk bottles, juice bottles etc. all colours and sizes are suitable.

Clear plastic soft-drink bottles

Art supplies can be dropped off at the Art Room or the office.

Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) 2019 CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover to costs of school excursions, camps and

sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A

special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards

expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

Parents or legal guardians are required to complete a CSEF application form and lodge it with the Office for processing.

Application forms should be completed and lodged with schools by Friday 1st March 2019, as payments are made from March. However

schools will be able to accept and process applications up until the end of term two each year. Contact the office to obtain a CSEF

application form.

Please ensure a copy of your means-tested concession card is provided with your CSEF application form. If you were

eligible and received CSEF in 2018, your application will rollover to 2019 and a new application form is not required to be

completed.

Do You Volunteer at Mano?

If you volunteer at the school, whether it be helping in the classroom, with Bike Ed, at the Carnivale, processing books in the

Library, attending excursions or activities such as the Walkathon, it is a Department of Education & Training requirement that you

MUST have a valid Volunteer Working with Children Check and have supplied a copy of your card to the Office.

If you don’t have a valid Working with Children Check please apply by following the instructions attached to this newsletter. There

is no cost for a Volunteer Working with Children Check (a passport photo is required). Please ask at the General Office if you

need a hand – we look forward to seeing our students continue to benefit from the amazing work that parents do as volunteers at

our school. Please check with your local post office if they process Working with Children checks.

SCHOOL BANKING School Banking day is FRIDAY

Remember, Friday is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit. For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits. School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school, raising 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement.

Hi Everyone!

I’m very excited to continue welcoming all the new and familiar faces to OSHC. The year has started off really well getting back into

our routines, planning for future weeks and getting all activities going. We have had lots of arts and crafts being made by our

talented children including experiments with different mediums to create lots of cool textures. This week we tried a glue, salt and

watercolour method. Children have been participating in activities including: cricket, playground, Lego creations, beads,

colouring-in, group games, cars, dolls, Uno, kinetic sand, glue and salt craft, card making, paper planes and more.

Remember Term 1 is hats and sunscreen so ensure you bring your hats along to OSHC if you want to go outside. We provide

sunscreen although you are welcome to bring your own.

Reminder: Camp Australia Cancellation Process

if your child is not attending the OSHC program on any day they are booked, you must let us know via phone on the Manifold

Heights OSHC mobile phone service number which is 0405 422 142. We are to follow correct procedures in locating children who

have not shown up at the service. Please ensure you communicate via call or text if your child is not attending the OSHC program

service and there is a prior booking for the day.
