Happy and safe holidays to all - The mid-point of the year has approached already. We are half way through the school year and with much achieved to date, there remains a lot to be tackled in the second half of 2017.

Prep enrolments for 2018 have been extremely strong with our capacity (3 classes) well exceeded in demand. Many current Grade 6s have received confirmed placements for Year 7 2018 and plans for their December Graduation evening are well advanced.

Term 3 will be an extended opportunity for students to follow up the feedback received via their mid-year Reports, as they strive to achieve the goals outlined in this week’s Student Led Conferences. I feel that these conferences are a terrific way for students to own their learning, as they articulate achievements to date and also their future learning goals with parents.

Last day (Friday June 30th) of term 2 dismissal time is 2.30pm.

Staffing update - We have quite a few changes for next term:

Anna in the General Office is moving across to Montpellier PS in a new role and we wish her all the very best. She will be sadly missed by our school community and we thank her for the cheerful manner in which she has performed her varied duties, over many years at Mano. At this stage a replacement has not been confirmed.

Jess in our OHSC program is moving on to other childcare related employment, after making a terrific commitment to caring for students before and after school each day . Camp Australia have announced a new OHSC coordinator (Christine), who will commence from the start of term 3 (and be visiting on this Friday).

Kylie in our canteen is soon to be beginning her own business and will be handing over to a new canteen manageress for next term (with LPS). She has done a terrific job since taking over from Sam some months ago and we wish her well with her new adventure. I am sure students will make Karina feel welcome as our new canteen manageress when she begins in this role.

Ms Bassi is taking leave for terms 3 and 4, travelling overseas and planning to return for the 2018 school year at Mano. We have appointed Ms Glenny to take over this role (Junior B) and we look forward to her contribution to Mano, especially in the Juniors.

Refurbishment of the Juniors building - Tenders will be invited in July for this major project ($839,000) – see latest plans in main entry foyer.

This means that at long last we will be seeing some action this year, as the Junior / Admin building gets its long overdue refurbishment.

Our architects have developed a planned approach for the works, aiming to have staggered stages of work completed, whilst trying to minimise the impact on the school program.

The first stage which may begin approximately at the start of Term 4, will see classes Junior B and Junior H relocated to the multipurpose room for a period of time.

More details will be conveyed as soon as they are confirmed with the successfully appointed builders.

Coming events in early Term 3 - Plans for Term 3 having been taking shape and much awaits for all – lots of learning, activities, parent functions, fun and whole school events.

We draw your attention to the following which are scheduled for the first few weeks of term 3:

School photos taken Friday July 21st (orders can be places

online as per instructions on the envelopes provided)

Trivia Night fundraiser Saturday July 22nd 7pm - TICKETS ARE NOW SOLD OUT.

Letterland dress up / celebration day Wednesday July 26th

Parent Information evening session focusing upon Positive Mental Health/Resilience Project/Mindfulness Monday July 31st 7pm.

Working Bee to kick off Term 3 - Please consider coming along and helping out for an hour or so on SUNDAY JULY 16th between 9-11am. Meet at the Strachan Ave school entry.

School Council have allocated some previously raised funds to help develop a new garden (near the Friendship garden) and an outdoor classroom seating area – these will be the key projects for this session. We will have a range of tasks, something for everyone! Morning tea provided and children welcome.

AND

This week our handyman / gardener John together with a wonderful parent volunteer (Chris), have begun creating a new garden and some additional seating, adjacent to the Friendship Garden.

With the support of School Council endorsed fundraising money, this little grounds improvement project will add to our school environment.

Library News It has been a very busy and productive term, with a variety of activities across all class levels at Mano. The Library staff are very grateful to all those fantastic parent helpers in the areas of covering new books, re-shelving and general organization. Fortunately, we have a large collection of new books ready to be borrowed next term, which is terrific. As the end of term is at our doorstep, it would be helpful to get all books returned and processed ready for next term. Thank you for your cooperation and Happy Holidays! Mrs. Bencic & Mrs. Mundine

Sports Report Western Region Cross Country Championships Last Thursday, two Manifold Heights students competed in the School Sport Victoria Western Region Cross Country Championships held at Brimbank Park, Keilor. We would like to congratulate Mahlia and Matthew on reaching this level of competition as this is the fourth Cross Country they have competed in this year. Both Athletes performed very well in large fields and over a tough course. Results: Mahlia Davys 33rd in a field of 67 Matthew Jones 33rd in a field of 58 Manifold Heights Primary School House Athletic Sports This year, Geelong West Primary School Sports District has decided to add an 8/9 year old age group to its program for the 2017 Athletics Carnival. Other sports districts within the Geelong area have trialled this in previous years with great success. The 8/9 year old age group however is non-progressive to Division level. We see this as a great opportunity for younger students to represent their school in a competitive environment against other local schools as a trial year, before Division-al progression in their future years of primary school. Schools do however have the opportunity to enter talented 9 year old students in the progressive 10 year old age group if appropriate, and therefore giving them the opportunity to ad-vance. Other age groups will be unaffected by this change. The top 2 students in each event will still progress to Divisional Level, with a maximum of 2 individual and 1 relay event per student. If you have any questions, please see your school repre-sentative for Interschool Sport. The Manifold Heights Primary School House Athletic Sports will be held at Goldsworthy Reserve, Corio on Wednesday 26th July. These Athletic sports are for all students in grades 3, 4, 5 & 6. We do require the help of parents to run the sports and we are seeking your help . If you are able to help AND you have a working with Children Check (that has been provided to the Office) please fill in and return the form below to the school. Art Smocks This is a reminder that all students need an Art smock. I do have spares but it is far better to have a personal Art Smock. The ideal smocks are caught in at the sleeves and slip over your head with an opening at the back. The smocks need to cover student's clothing. We are very busy creating work ready for our Art Show in Term 3. More information about the Art Show to follow. We are looking for donations of the following items -wool, flat meat trays (suitable for paint palettes) and wadding.

Chaplains Corner Recently, I was reading a great article that encouraged parents/carers to be their children’s cheerleader. The point of the article, was to support the child, particularly, when they are struggling. Cheering on your struggling student, and making a big deal over a little successes & minor wins, builds their self-confidence. This encourages and creates the aspiration in the child, especially if they find a particular task difficult, to keep working hard. The article also talked about increasing time in activities where struggling students can excel and build feelings confidence and self-worth. This is part of real encouragement for children. Perhaps, this week we can all take the time to make a fuss over small success in a child who found an activity challenging. Student led conferences might be the perfect time for it. By providing real encouragement we create an environment for true growth. Regards, Jesse Winter – School Chaplain

Help Homeless People in Geelong

Do know many people in Geelong don’t have a home to live in? 750 people in the Geelong area are homeless and this number is rising? This number includes kids just like us.

Just because you are homeless, doesn’t mean you are not important. Imagine not having a home and imagine not being able to be clean.

I would like your help Mano, to collect hygiene and personal care items for homeless people in Geelong. The donations would go to a charity called “The Road Home” because they are running a winter appeal for personal care items. Even if we all just added one item it would be great. The charity suggested these items could be collected: soap, wet wipes, tooth brushes , tooth paste, hand sanitiser, small travel tissues, deodorant, combs, brushes, female hygiene products, socks, underwear etc.

I have put a donation box at the Office and I will visit to classrooms once a week until the end of term to collect items and to remind you. Your help will really make a difference to people’s lives.

Thanks for your support.

SCHOOL BANKING School Banking day is FRIDAY Remember, Friday is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit. For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits. School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school, raising 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement. Win a family adventure holiday at Tokyo Disneyland! This year, School Banking is running a Future Savers Grand Prize competition that will take one lucky School Banker all the way to Tokyo, Japan. The winner gets an unforgettable family trip, for up to two adults and three children, where they’ll explore Tokyo Disneyland with its amazing attractions, including the futuristic Tomorrowland, plus enjoy the fun rides at Tokyo DisneySea. Students who make 15 or more School Banking deposits by the end of Term 3, 2017 will be automatically entered into the draw. This is another great way to motivate students to save regularly and reach their savings goals. If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

DO VOLUNTEER AT MANO? If you volunteer at the school, whether it be helping in the classroom, with Bike Ed, at the Carnivale, processing books in the Library, attending excursions or activities such as the Walkathon, it is a Department of Education & Training requirement that you MUST have a valid Working with Children Check and have supplied a copy of your card to the Office. There is no cost for a Volunteer Working with Children Check. Please ask at the General Office if you need a hand – we look forward to seeing our students continue to benefit from the amazing work that parents do as volunteers at our school. Please check with your local post office if they process Working with Children checks.
