School Review Outcomes Our recent School Review has highlighted 6 Key Improvement Strategies, which will collectively form the basis for our next 4 year Strategic Plan and be specifically actioned and sequenced into the 2018 Annual Implementation Plan (AIP). * Consistently embed an agreed whole-school instructional model across all curriculum areas and classrooms. * (Continue to) use PLCS, PLTs and other collaborative professional learning approaches to support teachers in building their capacity (practice excellence) to consistently implement the school’s instructional model. *Review leadership structure and develop an effective and staff endorsed distributive instructional leadership model. *Enhance efforts and arrangements that promote increased opportunities and learning success for every student through partnerships involving students, teachers, families and other stakeholders (community, DET regional, businesses) *Activate student voice, leadership and agency in own learning *Develop a consistent whole-school approach to health, wellbeing and inclusion We are currently developing action and targets around these six. This will be major foci for our school improvement plans and commitment to ensuring our school meets the high expectations of our community and that of the Department of Education.

Mano Cup Day Celebrations - Tuesday 7th November ‘We all got dressed up in costumes. There were 4 winners for each level. We had a parade in the Prep building. We had a picnic lunch on the oval’. Comments from Riley Samuels from JC, in the positon of ‘Principal for the Hour’ (after receiving her 150th token!).

Walkathon Sponsorships Many thanks to all those generous sponsors who supported the recent whole school Walkathon event. Over $3,200 has been received to date and this is a fabulous result! We hope all students will be able to finalise their sponsorships in the coming days. This year’s Student Leaders have some creative and exciting plans for these fundraising profits – details will be shared in coming newsletters.

Flag Flown at Half-Mast on Wednesday 8th November A State Funeral for The Right Honourable Sir Ninian Stephen KG AK GCMG GCVO KBE QC was held on Wednesday 8th November 2017 at St Paul’s Cathedral, corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets, Melbourne. Sir Ninian served as Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia from 1982-1989. He became the first Australian Ambassador for the Environment from 1989-1992. He was a Justice of the High Court of Australia from 1972-1982 and served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria from 1970-1972. Sir Ninian served as patron for many significant Australian organisations and was honoured with numerous awards including a Knighthood of the Order of

Australia in 1982. He received the rare distinction of a Knighthood in the Order of the Garter in 1994. As a mark of mourning and respect, and in accordance with protocol, the Australian National Flag was flown at Man at half-mast all day on Wednesday 8 November 2017. I was most pleased to see that many students noted the flag was at half mast, enquired why this was so and some had the initiative to ‘google’ the reason.

MONDAY 13TH NOVEMBER – PUPIL FREE DAY Staff will be engaged in a second full day of professional development around the writing program of VCOP. Students have been embracing how Vinnie Vocabulary, Connie Connectives, Ollie Openers and Penny Punctuation related strategies, can really enhance their writing. Teachers will learn more about this important priority whole of school work, with regular classes resuming on Tuesday 14th November.

‘Lock In’ Drill Conducted Students and staff are to be acknowledged on how appropriately they responded on Wednesday when half way through morning recess time, we put into action a ‘Lock In’ procedure. In the case of a real emergency, our community needs to know how to respond whether this be during class time or break time. The Department of Education expects schools to practice its emergency plans and we try to ensure that students engage appropriately whilst trying to minimise possible anxiety related issues.

Assembly Performances Each week we try to ensure that assembly has some special components, giving students an opportunity to shine! At assembly this week we had Class ML sing ‘Here Comes a Bluebird’ and the wonderfully talented Dance Troupe perform. Our students and staff love to see parents, grandparents and friends of the Mano community join us at Monday morning assemblies. Annual Parent Surveying This year we had 64 responses to the annual Parent Opinion Survey (conducted by email via the Department of Education). Responses in general were very positive overall with the following results recorded: * Parent participation and involvement: 90% * School pride and confidence: 86% * High expectations for success: 91% * Student agency and voice: 85% * Promoting positive behaviour: 93% * Managing bullying: 80% * School connectedness: 91% These results together with those of students and staff will help us develop our next Strategic Plan and target school improvement in specific areas.

The Big Write and Talk Homework This term has been an exciting time for developing students skills in writing. We have begun implementing ‘The Big Write’ each fort-night. This is not a test, but is an opportunity for students to write uninterrupted and put into practice all the skills they have been learning in writing over the previous fortnight. Students are already producing some fantastic work - just have a look at some of the Prep’s stories in ‘The Big Write’ attachment with this newsletter. Don’t forget that all students will bring home their ‘Talk Homework’ two to three days before the Big Write so that you can help them build their vocabulary and ideas prior to writing (see the Talk Homework attach-ment with this newsletter for more information). The Staff will be learning more about assessing students writing and assisting students to set their learning goals, next Monday on our pupil free day. Thankyou for your help.
