Reconciliation Week acknowledgment at our weekly assembly - The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2017 (27 May – 3 June) is 'Let's Take the Next Steps'.

At assembly on Monday morning we talked about it being 50 years since the 1967 referendum, which altered the Australian Constitution so Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples could be counted in the Census, thus giving the Australian government the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students were also reminded of the details on both the Aboriginal and Torris Strait Islands flags. We also noted that it is 25 years since Eddie 'Koiki' Mabo, whose fight for recognition of the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional owners of their land ensured changes to the foundation of land law in Australia to recognise native title.

We played the song ‘Treaty’ by Yothu Yindi, which students really enjoyed as we begun and then ended our assembly. Aboriginal history and cultures is a cross-curriculum priority and the Victorian Curriculum requires the teaching of Aboriginal perspectives to be embedded within the curriculum.

Each week we have an ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ as we aim to work towards creating an education system that values, respects and celebrates our First Nations peoples and cultures.

Book Fair – thank you to all who made purchases - The Book Fair was a terrific success at Mano last week. With sales totalling $4,659.00, a profit of $1,527.50 was achieved (via sales commission) which will be spent on library books and resources.

A big thank you to families who made purchases, selecting from a wide range of books and stationery items.

Well done to Mrs Bencic who coordinated the Book Fair and will select a range of book genres with the $1,527.50 to meet the diverse needs and interests of individual students.

Mid-year Student Reports and Student Led Conferences - Teachers are beginning the lengthy process of creating mid-year Reports and these are due to be issued in the second last week of this term.

They will be followed by Student Led Conferences in the last week of term. Parents will note some modifications to these Reports as teachers are now in 2017 assessing against the Victorian Curriculum (previously AusVELS).

Ex-Mano students doing well - Some exciting news was received from Geelong High School this week – three Grade 6 students from 2016 (now in Year 7) have been awarded scholarships. A big congratulations to Sam Hicks (academic), Ebony McLean (Sports) and Harold Walker (Music).

Whilst we are not surprised to hear of how well they have embraced their secondary education, it is wonderful feedback to their families and the staff at Mano who have supported their growth and learning during primary school days.

Dogs in the school grounds - Can we please ask parents and carers to keep dogs on leashes at all times and to refrain from being in the school grounds.

If dogs are walked with families to and from school or brought in cars, we ask that you drop off and meet your children each day at one of the many gates / school entries.

We have had a number of concerns recently expressed by parents around the number of, the size of, and in some cases the behaviour of dogs in our school grounds – especially at drop off and pick up times.

At the main entrance to the school (Strachan Avenue) there is a ‘Puppy Pit Stop’ clearly painted on the side of the Gunyah building and this is an ideal ‘drop off and meeting place’ for families to use each day who have a furry family member with them.

Let us love our pets, respect the concerns of others and avoid a potential injury / accident.

SCHOOL BANKING School Banking day is FRIDAY Remember, Friday is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit. For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits. School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school, raising 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement. Win a family adventure holiday at Tokyo Disneyland! This year, School Banking is running a Future Savers Grand Prize competition that will take one lucky School Banker all the way to Tokyo, Japan. The winner gets an unforgettable family trip, for up to two adults and three children, where they’ll explore Tokyo Disneyland with its amazing attractions, including the futuristic Tomorrowland, plus enjoy the fun rides at Tokyo DisneySea. Students who make 15 or more School Banking deposits by the end of Term 3, 2017 will be automatically entered into the draw. This is another great way to motivate students to save regularly and reach their savings goals. If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

Jess and Staff.

When to know you need to keep your child home from school!

“I'm usually a pretty good judge of when my kids are too sick to go to school or daycare, but other times — like when my youngest seems to be dragging but has no fever — I'm just not sure. How can I tell when they're well enough to go to school and when they should just stay at home?”

Many parents have a hard time deciding if their kids are well enough to go to school. After all, what well-intentioned parent hasn't sent a child off with tissues in hand, only to get that mid-morning "come get your child" phone call?

But making the right decision isn't as tough as you might think. It basically boils down to one question: Can your child still participate in school activities? After all, having a sore throat, cough, or mild congestion does not necessarily mean a child can't be active and participate in school activities.

So trust your instincts. If your son has the sniffles but hasn't slowed down at home, chances are he's well enough for the classroom. On the other hand, if he's been coughing all night and needs to be woken up in the morning (if he typically wakes up on his own), he may need to take it easy at home.

Of course, never send a child to school who has a fever, is nauseated, vomiting, or has diarrhoea. Kids who lose their appetite, are clingy or lethargic, complain of pain, or who just don't seem to be acting "themselves" should also take a sick day.

If you decide that your child is well enough to go to school, check in first. Most childcares, preschools, and primary schools have rules about when to keep kids home. For example, conjunctivitis or strep throat usually necessitates a day home with appropriate treatment. Usually, kids can't return to school or childcare until at least 24 hours after a fever has broken naturally (without fever-reducing medicines).

And remember, go with your gut. You know your kids best, and you know when they're able to mo-tor through the day — and when they're not.
