BACKGROUND

RULE OF THIRDS/THE LEFT THIRD

Bright colour to attract the reader’s eye to the magazine’s name. The name of the magazine NME actually sounds like ‘enemy’ which creates a rowdy rebellious theme, usually relating to the younger generation.

Gives the reader that little bit more information about but also is eye catching as well as it jumps out to the reader and target audience.

It’s very colourful and represents the little caring attitude and people don’t take things too seriously. This appeals to the younger generation because it shows how the cover is easy going just like the content inside will be. The graffiti behind Dizzee is representive of the kind of music he produces; quite urban and hip in today’s age.

The informal sounding of the quote stops the magazine from sounding too serious and instead presents it as being much more light hearted and lightens up the mood. It also shows that it’s a down to earth mood and presents the attitude of the younger generation and how they speak instead of the older generation.

This gives the magazine a sense of structure so that it doesn’t get messy. For example the masthead is at the top and doesn’t get in the way.

Adds some more information on the front cover. It’s just there to add extra information and isn’t there to specifically attract too much information.

This is a compulsory feature for every magazine. It is usually located at the bottom so that isn’t too prominent and doesn’t divert any attention away from the main content on the front page.

It’s bold and stands out, takes up the width of the page, highlighting it’s importance. It’s the name of the artist; in this case Dizzee Rascal so that people are perfectly clear with who it is because nowadays, pictures are heavily photoshopped and it’s not always very clear who the image is of.

Is of Dizzee Rascal, a famous artist known for his crazy music videos and energetic songs. The photo of him on the cover is literally bulging out of the screen because of the use of colours and action he is doing. Everything seems to feel as if its jumping out of the page at you and makes it feel very realistic.

Gives the readers an insight to what will be included within the magazine, from just looking at the front cover instead of having to flick through or look at the contents page, which is much more time and effort. And will probably not make them want to buy it because they have already seen everything that’s in there, leaving no surprise stories or interest.

Gives the reader some more information on a story or page that it exclusive to this magazine, or something the magazine thought would grab the readers attention. They have made the writing bolder as it gets to the important section of the sentence and gives the page reference and what the page contains in only a few words.

TARGET AUDIENCE OF THIS MAGAZINE

METHODS USED TO ATTRACT THIS TARGET AUDIENCE ARE:

Target audience Profile (possibly add image)

Musical interests/favourite artists etc – The music range is quite mixed because Dizzee Rascal is an urban star and appeals to that market but the name of the other bands on the page are of all genres so thus, it appeals to people who like all types of music.

Gender - male, because all the bands featured on the top next to the masthead are all male bands or artists. The background image is of a man having fun, and the colours and graffiti background represent a male style image.

Age - the age would be around teenagers to late 20’s because you wouldn’t see a middle aged man/women reading this type of magazine, especially due to the informal style speech on the front cover. The bands and music taste are more younger generations.

Social class (how much money do they have available?) - Well they are targeting it at younger people who have the money to afford the gigs and festivals they talk about, the magazine itself looks good quality.

How much does magazine cost? - The magazine costs around £2.20, which is quite a lot compared to other magazines but less than other types of magazines like fashion.

Dizzee helps attract the target audience because his music relates to that generation.

Colours – are fun and energetic which attracts the younger audiences. They use bright and a variety of different colours.

BARCODE-DATE/ISSUE/PRICE

BACKGROUND

Quite bright colours used to attract the reader, prominent colours such as black and red which help to create the effect of ‘fire’ perhaps portraying that the type of music is quite explosive and exciting. Part of the masthead is slightly cut off by Eminem’s head but they can afford to do that because of the magazine name being so well known.

Is very plain and allows to get rid of any distractions and maintains and diverts the focus on the main object positioned at the front of the cover which is Eminem.

This is effective because it makes the reader want to find out more about the story. And the statement “I almost died” is quite intense and clear, immediately grabbing attention and shock; making the reader want to find out all about it. Also, it’s part of the biggest text on the page apart from the masthead so it attracts a lot of attention from the reader and it’s one of the first things they look at when they look at the magazine.

This gives the magazine cover a sense of structure and makes sure nothing looks out of place and looks as professional as it can. Most of the important text, such as the pull quote and main cover line, is placed on the left hand side of the cover because it would be the only thing the reader would spot when it would be placed on a shelf.

It emphasises the extra things in the magazine and what else would be included, effectively persuading the reader to buy the magazine.

These highlight the other content that’s going to be in the magazine, scattered around the figure in the centre so grab the attention and follow with the particular colour scheme to maintain fluency and consistency.

This is effective because it only uses one image which allows to keep all the focus and emphasis on the artist which in this case is Eminem. His stern and serious expression, dressed in a black vest with his arm tattoos on show creates the ‘bad boy’ feel to it.

This is effective in that it gives greater insight into what the main story will be about. It’s the second biggest text on the page apart from the masthead and attracts the reader who want to know all about Eminem and his life.

These are necessary aspects of the magazine that it has to include. But they are positioned near the bottom of the magazine and out of the way so it’s not overly noticeable and doesn’t get in the way of the other aspects on the cover because it’s not of too much importance in terms of the visual image.

USE OF A PULL QUOTE

RULE OF THIRDS/THE LEFT THIRD

BACKGROUND

The masthead is situated in the corner of the page so that when it’s put on the shelf, you’d still be able to clearly see it. And it’s a simple ‘Q’ to make it more familiar and recognisable because it’s not difficult to remember the name.

Even though the main image is covering most of the page, you can see that the little bits of background are plain. This is to allow the reader’s attention to be focused on the main content on the cover which in this case is Noel Gallagher and get rid of any distractions on the page.

Gives more insight into what the story and interview is about. The use of a pull quote is particularly effective because it can be used to shock the reader, thus making them want to read on and find out more about it.

It gives the magazine cover more structure and in this case, you can see that most of the cover lines/text are on the left hand side of the cover because when on a shelf, they would still be visible and the reader would still be able to see it.

They follow a particular colour scheme thus giving the magazine more consistency and building up a theme of the colours red, white and black. The fact that all the main cover lines are in black highlight their importance.

Is s very big close up shot of Noel Gallagher’s face so that you can clearly see the stern expression on his face. Also, the image is in black and white almost to suggest that a legendary band like Oasis are making a comeback, and the black and white represents how long ago the band were around that they’ve almost become ‘vintage’.

This is situated at the top of the page so it emphasises it’s importance. Also, a reason why it isn’t anchoring the image is because the image was intended to take up the whole page and the editor doesn’t want the cover line to get in the way. This is effective because it makes it different to most other magazines and shows originality.
