Front cover

The late Boon Boonzaaier and I are on a special Bosveld Train Safaris excursion on the way

to the Cape. We are enjoying a quiet drink, Boon wine and I a Brandy and Coke in our

compartment before dinner, we are enjoying the clinkety-clack of the coaches on the rails!

Drinking in the sunset and ambience! This photo is called “Wes-Transvaalse sonsak” it was

taken on 3-10-2003 by HBH. Those were the days!

Welcome!

A hearty word of welcome to each friend! Let’s hope those awful gremlins won’t pester us

this time!

Editorial

This pictorial edition is compiled for solely your enjoyment – just look at the pictures and

relax. Feedback on the photographs will be appreciated as we don’t have all the information

available. A special word of thanks to all our correspondents, for their photographs and

comments. I really appreciate it that you are prepared to share with us! Before Railways in

Africa we had the ox-wagon and where we had no roads we made use of the following:

We pay homage to all our pioneers!

1E & ES - Rudi Venter

Correspondent Rudi Venter sent in some historic photographs of the 1E and the ES. He also

sent some photographs that Charles Baker had taken. I had obtained permission from

Charles Baker to publish them. One photograph is also the same as Leith Paxton’s

photograph on page 135.1

remember that not all the 1E’s were of the same

shade of green – HBH]

Lt-Col Eric Samuels grew up on “Time Ball Hill” as his father was a railwayman. One day he

took me on a tour of Old Pretoria. He took me to SAR Pretoria West and he pointed out the

old Pretoria Pietersburg Railway Company’s station. This station is to the West of the SAR

Pretoria Station and past Potgieter Street to the west. If I guess it is about a mile to the west

of the Central Station. Here are some photographs I took at the “old” PPR Station:
