Cash for Clunkers
Intro:
Did you know that our government actually hurt the automotive industry
while trying to help it? On the day of June 24, 2009 President Obama signed a
law into effect. It was the CARS which stood for the Car Allowance Rebate
System. Most people have referred to it as the Cash for Clunkers program. The
whole plan was to trade in your older “unsafe” gas guzzler car or truck for a brand
new car that had a higher fuel mileage. CARS was also a plan for the government
was to boost the auto sales up and to boost the auto industry itself. There has been
speculation on whether Cash for Clunkers was effective or not. Cash for Clunkers
was a bad decision by the federal government and it ended hurting the automotive
industry. Did it really help out the auto industry, or did it hurt the auto industry
even more?
Global Warming:
There are various reasons why the government started Cash for Clunkers. There a
couple of reasons that have already been stated a couple in the previous
paragraph. Another reason is Global Warming. In recent years, the government
has been getting down to business with Global Warming. Greenhouse gases have
been creating issues with our environment for a very long time. Our planet is
becoming warmer and warmer every year. Fossil fuels and forests being that were
burned are bad for our environment.

There is more to just having the dealerships website though. Many dealerships also post
there new car inventory on various third party websites. For example, AutoTrader is a very
effective way for others to view the new vehicle inventory. This way the consumer will reach
more dealerships in their area.
Before the internet, the consumer’s only choices were to actually drive to the dealership
and look at the selection of available vehicles or to talk over the phone. Phone calls did not
enable the consumer to view the car. There were no visuals of anything. All they had was a
salesperson’s word on what the vehicle was about. In the future, the Internet will lead to most of
the new car department’s sales.
Customer loyalty is also very important. In today’s world, keeping in contact with
previous buyers is one of the best things a salesman can do. It keeps the buyers wanting to come
back. They do not come back just to buy another vehicle, but they will come back for oil changes
and other services. By keeping in contact with a customer, it makes the salesman and the
dealership for that matter, seem very reliable. A simple phone call makes the customer get a
sense that the salesman actually care about the customers.

Today, I believe the independent dealership industry is growing and is bigger than ever. The Buy Here,
Pay Here business is going well. There are a growing number of people who have bad credit or cannot
afford a regular price used vehicle You are seeing more and more advertisements on television and
online for independent dealerships. They are really grasping today’s market and many consumers are
beginning to realize that the want to buy a new car does not need to be desired anymore. Yeah, you can
go across the lot to the used car department but the vehicles will still be priced higher than their value.
Independent dealership can sell vehicles at decently lower prices than franchised dealerships can. Also,
independent dealers can make more profit because of the vast difference in expenses. There are people
that still shop for vehicles and have service done at a franchised dealer because they probably have
never been anywhere else. If people were to shop at a well-respected independent dealer, I think it
would be hard for them to go back to the franchised dealer. Some people probably have no clue
independent lots exist. Many probably do not realize that it could save money.
