Professor of Psychiatric Nursing honoured by Oxford Brookes University

Professor Phil Barker, Head of the Centre for PsychiatricNursing Practice Research at the University of Newcastle,received an honorary doctorate from Oxford Brookes Uni-versity on Friday 21st September 2001.

Professor Barker was honoured for his 30 years career asa psychotherapist, academic researcher and lecturer in thefield of mental health.

He has been an innovator and agitator throughout hiscareer and he was the first to achieve many things; one ofthe first nurse behaviour therapists, one of the first clinicalnurses to gain a PhD, and the first professor of psychiatric

nursing practice. He has published widely and is the authorof 13 books, with his more recent research focussed onpeople with more serious forms of mental illnesses, includ-ing psychosis and suicidal depression.

Commenting on his award, Professor Phil Barker, said:‘This award belongs to my discipline of psychiatric nurs-ing, and to those I have worked with, as patients andcolleagues, over the past 30 years. They taught me allthat is worth knowing. I am honoured to be associatedwith nursing, with psychotherapy and with OxfordBrookes.’

He was nominated by Oxford Brookes University’sSchool of Health Care, and his oration was given by RobWondrak, Deputy Head of the School of Health Care.
