Announcements Professor of Psychiatric Nursing honoured by Oxford Brookes University Professor Phil Barker, Head of the Centre for Psychiatric Nursing Practice Research at the University of Newcastle, received an honorary doctorate from Oxford Brookes Uni- versity on Friday 21st September 2001. Professor Barker was honoured for his 30 years career as a psychotherapist, academic researcher and lecturer in the field of mental health. He has been an innovator and agitator throughout his career and he was the first to achieve many things; one of the first nurse behaviour therapists, one of the first clinical nurses to gain a PhD, and the first professor of psychiatric nursing practice. He has published widely and is the author of 13 books, with his more recent research focussed on people with more serious forms of mental illnesses, includ- ing psychosis and suicidal depression. Commenting on his award, Professor Phil Barker, said: ‘This award belongs to my discipline of psychiatric nurs- ing, and to those I have worked with, as patients and colleagues, over the past 30 years. They taught me all that is worth knowing. I am honoured to be associated with nursing, with psychotherapy and with Oxford Brookes.’ He was nominated by Oxford Brookes University’s School of Health Care, and his oration was given by Rob Wondrak, Deputy Head of the School of Health Care. 7th European Mental Health Nursing Conference A conference with the theme ‘Global partnerships in mental health’ is organized by the RCN in association with FS11 – a sub group of the Danish Nurses Organization. To be held between 15-16 February 2002 at the SAS Scandinavia Hotel, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Professor of Psychiatric Nursing honoured by Oxford Brookes University

Professor Phil Barker, Head of the Centre for PsychiatricNursing Practice Research at the University of Newcastle,received an honorary doctorate from Oxford Brookes Uni-versity on Friday 21st September 2001.

Professor Barker was honoured for his 30 years career asa psychotherapist, academic researcher and lecturer in thefield of mental health.

He has been an innovator and agitator throughout hiscareer and he was the first to achieve many things; one ofthe first nurse behaviour therapists, one of the first clinicalnurses to gain a PhD, and the first professor of psychiatric

nursing practice. He has published widely and is the authorof 13 books, with his more recent research focussed onpeople with more serious forms of mental illnesses, includ-ing psychosis and suicidal depression.
