The Northwest College of the arts is purposefully located directly on the Wil-
lamette River. The Northwest river trail, which includes McCormick pier, is com-
pletely devoid of activity and is physically disconnected from the riverfront park
to the south and from the north waterfront. As a building form it is reacting to the
train passion on one side and the river running on the other. This manifested in
bulkier and more solid form on the train side and a lighter and smaller side on the
river side. ART SCHOOL

Old town China town located in NW Portland is in great
need of a new dimension. The mixed use tower is a study in
adding vertical density to a district that is, for now, limited
to the heights of the existing historic buildings.

The adaptive reuse of the historic Washington Monroe H.S.. The school is locat-
ed in the Buckman neighborhood of SE portland. The program of the building
was based on trying to reuse the High school as a College. A need in the area
for colleges is in performing arts. This small scale private college would house
dancing, drama, and vocal arts. The first three floors are classroom floors, while
the top one and a half floors are used as dormatories.

This urban design was a collaboration of two Japanese students from Meiji Uni-
versity in Tokyo and three students from the University of Oregon. The outcome
of the charette shows the need to bring several new things to Old Town: Dimen-
sion, easy transportation from NW, Japanese cultural influence, and pedestrian
friendly streets.
*The tower district was an addition made by me after the charette.

This was a collaborative effort to enhance the atmosphere of Ankeny Street.
Ankeny Street presents the problem of being the street where the two Port-
land grids collide. The plan for Ankeny street is to transform it into a pedestrian
way linking downtown to the waterfront with a series of catalyst buidings. The
neighboring district is also densified to increase the population of the district
that Ankeny street is part of.

This design centers aroung a new Micro district along the Northwest Willamette
waterfront. The new micro district will activate the riverfront 18 hours a day and
replace the private waterfront used by residents of McCormick Pier. The walk-
able mixed-use district is anchored by the NW school of the arts and a new
North Willamette boat house. The anchor uses as well as a mix of cafes, restau-
rants, and recreational activities will activate and connect the waterfront to the
riverfront trail to the south.

The Goose Hollow neighborhood of Portland Oregon was disconnected from
the downtown when the 405 freeway was cut through Portland. Goose Hol-
low now feels a disconnect from the city and a lack of community place within
the neighborhood. This plan focuses on connecting Goose Hollow back to the
downtown, by bridging the 405, and create two community places where resi-
dents can gather.
