DESCRIPTION

Design is closely related to the society, culture and people. We experience the power of design every day. It sends message to us about the idea. Simply, design influences us. Thus, design must include psychology, anthropology,sociology, semiotics and other disciplines in developing effective aesthetic-messages. So you can say that design is not just how we create visuals but how to get there. The designs in the 21st century are about “AnalyticalAesthetics.” It is based on analyzing the people and their culture and society. Hence design is not neither an art nor science, but it is art-science. As now, a new generation of design educators and practitioners are trying very hard to position design as the center of the academia and business world. Now, designers are conscious and more people rely heavily on designs. Without right design, there will be no success sending a message (or idea) to the people.In this year, 195 designers and 8 design firms from 23 nations are participated in the United Designs exhibition.

In the 21st century, design is a way to increase person’s living standard and also it

has a pivotal role in developing a knowledge industry as a national industry. This

fact is evident throughout the world that the best policy for ensuring interna-

tional competitiveness and increasing living quality is design. Thus, it requires an

extensive cultural study and understanding.

At this critical point of time, the fourth United Designs exhibition is a significant

event for designers from around the world to share their concerns and cultures

to benefit visual knowledge and language by exchanging contemporary designs.

I hope the United Design exhibition can benefit all of us to understand unique

designs from around the world that brings us close friendship through exchang-

ing spiritual and cultural issues. Therefore, the United Designs exhibition is an

international event for bridging the designs of world.

About the Exhibi t i on

Design is closely related to the society, culture and people. We experience the power of design every day. It sends message to us about the idea. Simply, design influences us. Thus, design must include psychology, anthropology, sociology, semiotics and other disciplines in developing effective aesthetic-messages. So you can say that design is not just how we create visuals but how to get there. The designs in the 21st century are about “Analytical Aesthetics.” It is based on analyzing the people and their culture and society. Hence design is not neither an art nor science, but it is art-science. As now, a new generation of design educators and practitioners are trying very hard to position design as the center of the academia and business world. Now, designers are conscious and more people rely heavily on designs. Without right design, there will be no success sending a message (or idea) to the people.

In this year, 195 designers and 8 design firms from 23 nations are participated in the United Designs exhibition. When I first organized the United Designs in 2004, my vision for the United Designs is to have exhibitions around the world in every two years to share our concerns about humanity. And I am honored to share this idea with Professor Dave Moon and his colleagues from California State University Northridge (CSUN), California USA. They were excellent on organizing the 4th United Designs exhibition.

We gathered here to share our concerns about the world. There are many issues we need to care about in this world as a responsible world citizen. But, we cannot concern all issues. Thus , the environmental awareness is what we concerned most at this time.

As a designer, we do best to express our concerns through designing posters. These posters are personal expres-sion about the environmental issues. We see a variety of different visual messages here. Some posters might disturb you and some might even move your heart. Definitely these outstanding posters influence your mind and heart about the environment. If just one of these posters influences your thoughts, I believe we did fine job on communicating the message and furthermore we have a successful exhibition.

Other category of this exhibition is a practical design. In this part of exhibition, we can understand how we com-municate client’s message now. Each era has own visual language and through these outstanding designs, we surely learn the present trend in the participant’s country and the world. We cannot judge its content and visual message, because its audience has own convention. But interestingly, our design language is conversed. Only difference is that the language we used in designs. Professionals and design students could learn from these practical design works to influence their visual communication skills.

As we all know, our planet is dying slowly.Our conscious time is so slow that we cannot notice its urgency.She needs our help and nurture.

As an individual, we can do a little to save her.But as a UNITED DESIGNER, we can do more.

So we speak out and act through what we do best, design!

The purpose of this poster is to visualize the relationship between Japan and commercial whaling. The argument that whale meat is demanded in Japan is a sham. Hence, in this poster the red circle of the Japanese flag became a circle of blood indicated by the little red drop hanging out at the bottom. A red whale tail branched out from the circle signifies the fact that many whales have been killed because of Japanese demands for whale meat. In order to stop commercial whaling and protect our environment, this poster reveals the fact of whaling by Japan and sends out a clear message - “Stop Whaling.” *This poster was designed for Greenpeace and selected by Good 50x70, Milan, Italy.

An image of Altas holding up the earth. However, Atlas is wearing a hazardous materials suit and the earth is depicted as poisoned and deteriorating. Through a mythological vehicle, I wanted to depict the Earth’s deterioration will not only ruin just our physical world, but will also create a great deterioration in our intangible assets as well.

We won’t have a society if we destroy the environment, so this poster emphasize out environment and how we can all do our part to take care of the world and Think Green by using strong typography and graphics.

Natural environment of the Korean Peninsula seen from satellite that it shows a clear sky without clouds. But, is it a positive thing to have a clear sky without clouds? By expressing our land is increasingly to be barren and dry as water shortages problem. This work indicates a warning about the lack of water and a message about environmental protection.

This piece was developed for the purpose of protecting the environmental future of the Earth and has visualized the international envi-ronmental issue to present its severity to people all over the world. In specific, the smoke coming out from the manhole represents the viscous gas and also implies that infants can inhale these toxic gases directly from pacifiers. Air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution and global warming have become a severe global issue that is threatening the future of mankind. In general, this piece was made to publicize the serious conditions of pollution in a new visual perspective, furthermore, imply that preservation is needed to keep a clean Earth and maintain a beautiful environment.

I made this poster to deliver the message that we should protect the earth. The earth has great value when humans and nature co-exist. The earth is as beautiful as a blooming flower.

On February 2, 2007, the United Nations scientific panel studying climate change declared that the evidence of a warming trend is “un-equivocal,” and that human activity has “very likely” been a driving force in that change over the last 50 years. The combination of a 30” triangular (U.S.) “YIELD” traffic sign with a high resolution image of the earth promotes the idea of treating our planet as our highest priority. As responsible inhabitants, we should continually ask ourselves if our actions are helping or hurting our planet earth.

The concept of the poster is to show the results of manmade factors damaging the environment. The idea of a melting globe came from the melting icebergs in the poles. The human hands holding the globe can have one or more of the following meanings: The origin of the crisis; Caring hands trying to do something (representing those who are fighting to preserve the Earth); and A symbol of the Human race suffering from the results of the global warming.

Many International Agencies concluded that the global climate had undergone significant changes in the 20th century. These changes included an increase in global surface temperature by 0.45 to 0.60 degree centigrade. These increases have been greater than at any time in the past 1000 years. Changes in atmospheric temperature are supported by new analyses that the heat content of oceans has significantly increased since 1950s. Increases in land surface temperatures have been positively correlated with decreasing snow cover and land ice. Sea level changes have also occurred. These have been on the order of 10 to 20 cm above levels in early 20th century.

This poster explores the theme of nature using a “small world” approach. Our world, it seems, is “smaller” than we tend to think: each plant and animal species playing a part in a complex chain. Our world’s plants and animals are linked and interdependent: there is less and less room to waste or abuse our resources, therefore we should think about nurturing it with our choices, like a small backyard paradise.

You are using me badly, in a very horrifying way, in which you are killing the life in the universe, with everything in it. You are killing the MOTHER NATURE. You are vanishing the pure air. You are poisoning yourself. Everything in the universe is being intoxicated by your irresponsible and stupid behaviors. It will always be that way, unless you try to change it. And you should change it, because harming me will harm your loved ones, and it will hurt you eventually.

I placed the world in a cup, a hot cup as an expression of it being too hot... which is exactly what global warming is. The earth is heating up as an effect of global warming. You see the smoke evaporating from the cup taking the illusion of an evaporating earth. And even a cup that you would usually enjoy can burn you if you don’t allow it to cool down. The earth here is heating and we need to cool it down so, so we can enjoy it.

This work is designed for more earth green. Work’s goal is reflected greener earth. On the other hand, if we ride a bicycle, air pollution will not be in earth and exhaust gases will decrease, earth will be defend from it. Let’s go ride a bicycle!

This poster was created in hopes of inspiring more ideas on ways to connect with the world. More ideas on ways we can transcend language barriers. If we can connect with the world we can be the catalyst to change the world.

The world map represents that the world is inseparable when it comes to dealing with environmental issue; the design depicts the concept of taking emergency measures to save the earth in pain from greenhouse effect and devastation, and thus our lives.

Therefore, we must make a tremendous effort to solve this problem because it will not be easy.

This poster attempts to instigate connection through the senses. I believe that an inherent response occurs when one’s attention is allowed to focus and absorb the rich intricacies of the landscape. But this perception is a choice towards awareness, which often conflicts with the common priorities of consumerism, expansion and competition. Sight, hearing and touch are emphasized as natural catalysts of sensitivity (ideally in awareness and action) to the environment. As demonstrated in the forms, there are flexible options within our normal state of affairs. I have found parallels between creative problem-solving and variation in daily actions—inspiring alternatives in dimensional, environmental, personal and creative realms.

This poster is a comment on the thoughtless use of electric energy and its negative effect on the increase of planet temperature worldwide. The concept is based on electricity related imagery transformed into basic linear forms and supported by warm vivid colors to visually represent heat and danger. Simplicity and clarity of forms within a dynamic composition are the key elements in order to transmit a direct message to the viewer.

Known as green color is formed by mixing in equal proportion with yellow and blue as far as subtractive color system. Otherwise, this equal and balance is corrupted or missing. There is a similar situation in nature. At the balance of nature is corrupted, when temperature that is sun (yellow) to be too much is drought or rain that is water (blue) to be too much is flood everywhere. It can be lived nature, it is formed by common points which equal sun and water. There is life in the area of this intersection or will not. We consumed without any hesitation about destroying the nature. The nature feeds our needs. We laughed and enjoyed her plentiful resources which eventually hurting herself. She is our mother. She sacrifices herself and now, we realized that she cannot nurture us anymore. Some of us still beg for her patience. We realized we done wrong and we need to nurture her. She is dying.

Terms, surface and structure, are not in contradiction in their meanings, but are used with conceptions supplementary to each other. ‘+’ symbol constitutes the intense contrast with the round shape in terms of the visual dimension. The round shape manifests the realistic life domain of the human being, ‘+’ refers to the expansion of the life domain.

This is for giving rise to sympathy for natural environment preservation. The destruction of pure natural environment is to exterminate an ecosystem and men. Let’s protect nature! Love nature^-^!

Poster for a poster exhibition on the ecological and environmental issues organized in the HaDivadlo Brno Gallery. By the Brno Biennale Association as a selection from the 11th International Triennale of environmental posters called Ekoplakat in Zilina, Slovakia. Different written texts in the Czech language are somehow concerned with the mentioned issues and they are not very serious.

The pollution and breathing in the red circle and a symbol of human beings, and two of the blue circle represents the eye of hope and a clean earth and black is the symbol of the earth pollution substances.

Jose Feliciano tells us about an hilarious hope and love with Listen to the rain. However, on the last day of the earth, we are bound to find out that the last rain is extremely against our expectation, like a red curse.

The Doomsday Clock conveys how close humanity is to catastrophic destruction–the figurative midnight–and monitors the means human-kind could use to obliterate itself. First and foremost, these include nuclear weapons, but they also encompass climate-changing technolo-gies and new developments in the life sciences that could inflict irrevocable harm. As we in water-rich countries take our daily showers, water the lawn or laze about in the pool, it’s easy to forget that fresh water is a life-or-death issue in many parts of the world. This poster was exhibited in Athens, at Syntagma Square, along with the work of 70 other Greek industrial, graphic and fashion designers, architects, street artists, etc. The Green Design Festival was organised with the collaboration of the City of Athens in an attempt to increase Athens’ citizens’ awareness about environmental issues. The design is an illustration based on the map of Athens. Type plays the role, using the names of roaδs as branches, and the green leaves represent the few parks in Athens.

In September 2006 the 1st International Art Biennal of Sinop, Sinopale, has taken place. Sinop is a vibrant and liberal city at the Black Sea coast of Turkey, surrounded by an unspoiled nature. Sinop is now in danger of being one of a few places in Turkey where the government wants to built the countrie’s first nuclear power station. To visualize the protest against this project the Sinopale organizers called international designers to design a poster which have been exhibited during the Biennal. I found the fish on the poster at a river in the Bavarian mountains and made a photo. When I had to design the poster I remembered this image and used it for the poster, because Sinop has a long tradition and history of boating and fishing.

GLOBAL CHILD INJURY PREVENTION CAMPAIGN FOR UNWHO AND UNICEF GLOBAL CHILD INJURY PREVENTION CAMPAIGN FOR UNWHO AND UNICEF

The World Report on Child Injury Prevention was launched in 2009. UNWHO and UNICEF commissioned Fabrica’s Visual Communication department to conceive a global advocacy and awareness raising campaign. Five separate posters, that also became off and on-line ads and displays, have been designed to communicate the graveness of the child injury situation worldwide. The goal is to urge policy makers to implement prevention measures for the first five injury causes: road traffic injuries, drowning, burns, falls and poisoning. In order to use a universal visual language related to children, putty characters engaged in the five injury causes were created.

ROAD SAFETY IS NO ACCIDENT: YOUNG ROAD USERS CAMPAIGN FOR UNWHO ROAD SAFETY IS NO ACCIDENT: YOUNG ROAD USERS CAMPAIGN FOR UNWHO

This campaign was commissioned by UNWHO for the First United Nations Global World Road Safety Week 2007. The campaign includes five posters and public service announcements addressing “young road users” which are the most frequent victims of road accidents. The aim of the operation is to raise awareness and promote action amongst the general global public around the five factors of greatest impact in road injuries regarding young road users: helmets, seatbelts, drinking and driving, speeding, and visibility. Fabrica was designated as the ideal creative partner for UNWHO on this project because of its young international team of creatives.

World No Tobacco Day is celebrated around the world every year on May 31st. The theme for 2009 is “Show the Truth: Picture Warnings Save Lives”. For this occasion UNWHO commissioned a global campaign to urge worldwide national decision-makers to apply pictorial health warnings on all packages of tobacco products. Pictorial tobacco health warnings are better than textual warnings only because they more effectively inform smokers about the dangers of tobacco, especially in countries with low rates of literacy. It is statistically proved that countries applying pictorial labels have had an average 15% reduction in tobacco consumption. Governments should not just tell the truth about how tobacco sickens and kills prematurely, they should show the truth also by requiring the placement of pictorial health warnings on packs of tobacco. Fabrica designed the series of three posters for this initiative. Each poster surrealistically communicates the pictorial warnings’ main goal: to not just tell the truth, but show it.

Bodhi Body Integrative Medical Centers promote a proactive approach to maintaining health through integrated medical services, the highest quality natural health products and unique guided physical health activities. Spire Consulting Group is a multi-disciplined construction management and engineering consulting firm located in Austin, TX. Zach Theatre, in Austin, TX, produces plays and musicals that receive critical acclaim both locally and nationally. Poster & program for a public dance event organized by the “Regroupement Québécois de la Danse”. The event wanted to attract grown-up & children, the concept was to place the dance in an urban environnment and to show the wide diversity of the existing dances. This is a graphic statement published in the Hong Kong newspaper Sunday Mingpao to critically reflect on the impermanence in life. I made use of a newspaper spread as the starting point, where on one side there is the sales report of the luxurious flat in Hong Kong, and on the other, a report on the earthquake in Si Chuan, China. The contrary dove me to put ontop of it an extract from the Buddhist sutra to reiterate the impermanence in life.

This is a graphic statement published in the Hong Kong newspaper Sunday Mingpao to critically reflect on the Olympic Games held in China. The photographs were taken on the day when the Olympic torch passed by Hong Kong. The text reads “In the era of collective dreaming, without any choice, everyone has to cling to the values of being fast, high and strong. Along the line, the strong will be stronger; the weak weaker.”

This poster was designed to promote Mirko Ilic public lecture at Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar. Mirko Ilic is an illustrator. Born in Bosnia, Mirko Ilic illustrated and art-directed posters, record covers, book covers, magazines, and comics before arriving in the U.S. in 1986. He was commissioned by many of the major magazines and newspapers to work as an illustrator before going on to become Art Director for Time magazine’s international edition in 1991. In 1992 he became Art Director for the New York Times Op-Ed pages and in 1995 he established Mirko Ilic Corp., a graphic design, 3-D computer graphics and motion picture title studio.

The Szeged Symphony Orchestra’s historical roots back to the eighteenth century, but the orchestra only was established in 1969 as a separate entity. With this object the modern and also the classical line is present in the design. By the ordered distribution and shapes are apparents the free and easy elements like in the music. To design the identity and the brochure of the orchestra must be have two further aspects: youthful enthusiasm and elegance.

We did this playful corporate design for a research project which is developed as a mobile application by docomo Communication Labo-ratories Europe in Munich. You can can use the application to gather and share personal information centered on places you visit and people you meet. First we had to find a name for the project. The name is based on “i-you-it”, to indicate the concept of community and networking behind the project. When recognizing the phonetic similarity between “iyouit” and “inuit”, which is the general term for a group of indigenous people inhabiting the Arctic regions of Canada, Alaska and Greenland, we finally had the idea for the logo. It is used on printed material, on the interface design of the mobile device, and on the web portal; always embedded in a visual story with Eskimos, fish, whales, icebergs, snow and mobile phones. An art poster for Digital Artist Chun shin park’s solo exhibition. Visualized artist’s great pleasure for painting only with digits.

A consortium of graphic designers, under the art direction of Sarah A Meyer, created this series of Graphic Call-out posters to advocate change through education. Each poster explores the environmental impetus for human trafficking upon disadvantaged populations. The posters were produced in answer to the documentary, CALL + RESPONSE, a film collaboration of artists and humanitarians.

This is a corporate identity piece for a restaurant and bar on California’s Catalina Island. The idea was to visually revisit the 1930s, where, during the prohibition, large yachts were anchored far enough of the state’s coastline to allow the consumption of alcohol and gambling.

Aloha from the friendly chocolate makers on the island of Kauai, Paddy Kean, and her husband, Spencer McDonald. This socially conscious couple left the mainland and their successful film and television industry careers behind to seek a more peaceful and environmentally friendly life as confectioners where the traditional cacoa bean is grown and thrives. Using graphic patterns and rich colors for the cacao beans and the leaves from the Cacao tree, this new brand delivers an understated, yet traditional Hawaiian look and feel for this new busi-ness venture. Please watch for the delicious Kaulua Hawaiian chocolate bar at your local grocery store in the near future.

Information design is defined as an easy and clear ways for effective visual explanations. But it is still needed for certain attractive forms and aesthetics presenting to designing values. Informational patterns which are visual legends contained with inherent images. I designed calendar 2009 for Amoeba Design Company with informational patterns showing world heritage’s forms and their values.

The concept for the poster is based on inter-textualizing the screen of a radar. ...A radar dish, or antenna, transmits pulses of radio waves or microwaves which bounce off any object in their path. The object returns a tiny part of the wave’s energy to a dish or antenna which is usually located at the same site as the transmitter. The time it takes for the reflected waves to return to the dish enables a computer to calculate how far away the object is, its radial velocity and other characteristics... The poster is using the way that radars work by substituting the objects they depict with human specifications. This is done to provoke thought on the way that immigrants are treated, their possible reasons for immigrating and their wish for better lives.

The Designer use a big Chinese calligraphy to write the word ‘山’ (Mountain) which seems shaking and falling that represent earthquake. On the other hand, the background of the poster is full of folding and irregular lines that represent the movement of earth’s crust. That is the disaster of the Sichuan Earthquake. Many people lost their homes and their loved ones. What shall we do for this? A collection of thoughts and images from Angkor Wat. Collages and photos responding to the nature of the pilgrimage and the multiple voices and paths of the collective experience.

The ZEBRA project incorporates the creative practice of visual communications into existing road markings. The project’s goal is to change the existing image of the pedestrian crossing using a new design dimension. In our intervention only existing crossings have been used. With their new visual image, they define the direction of movement inside/outside the pedestrian zone to users, letting them know that they are inside or outside the pedestrian zone. The ZEBRA project’s gallery is the street, the artists’ signatures are the works themselves, the viewers of the project are passers-by.

Kali Nikitas, a speaker at UM-St. Louis, is an inspired educator who heads the design department at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. For this poster, My student Adam and I explored the theme suggested by her design company, Design for Love (+$) as well as her passionate approach to both teaching and design to create this creatively bursting, colorful and over-full poster. To give it an even warmer feel, we flocked the black lines to make them warm and fuzzy.

Color Management: A Comprehensive Guide for Graphic Designers, and its companion book, Acuity Color System, describe how to forecast the physical, psychological, and/or learned behavioral effects of color and how we can use color to create more meaningful messages. By unlocking expertise and demystifying theory, these books open the door to new and bold uses of color that communicate and entertain.

It is idea and spirit of this company.

This compilation poster was created based on the concept of Fossil’s “Modern Vintage” Campaign in 2008. The inspiration for this set of posters was a fiction event or festival and was designed to evoke the early to mid-20th Century modern design era. The shapes are simple and soft, and the lines are clean, bring to mind the authentic feeling of the mid-Century time period from the 1940s to the 1960s.

Through a series of diagrams and charts, it explores the ways the author framed his arguments and attempts to visually translate these verbal strategies. Each double spread corresponds to a specific chapter in the original text and the maps were developed using at least one of four interpretation criteria: the physical, based on his detailed descriptions of places and creatures; the linguistic, based on the discursive patterns found in his prose; the sequential, based on the temporal dimension of the plot; and the referential, based on the relationship between author and subject.

This proposal is for 2009 UNESCO Creative Cities selection. The proposal is designed using Seoul color, Seoul font and Seoul-symbolizing calligraphy as it graphic motive. The case and the cover is made of Hanji (Korean paper) to enhance the image of Korean traditions and history.

This proposal is for year 2010 World Design Capital selection. Its cover is designed using calligraphy that symbolizes Seoul as its graphic motive, and the back of a book section of the book uses silk material with Korean traditional markings printed on it.
