On behalf of the Niagara Falls Board of Education, it gives me great pleasure to reintroduce a full-scale Community Education Program to the Niagara Falls community. We hope that you find the offerings educational, engaging and most importantly fun. These programs will give our community the opportunity to utilize your public schools in a manner that can teach new skills.

Please encourage your friends and neighbors to join you in trying one or more of our classes. Also, please realize that this is only a beginning. We hope to grow not only the offerings, but the classes to include many of the skills the community is interested in.

One of the five strategic goals of our District is to achieve the highest level of partnerships with our community. I sincerely hope that these programs give you a sense of our strong desire to welcome you into our public schools.

Beginner Basket WeavingThis little gem is a great introduction to weaving! Your project will start with a 5”x5” square base and will end round. Crochet - Beginner and intermediateJoin us in learning the basic stitches for beginner and intermediate patterns, while creating a lovely handmade project. A great class to learn stitches along with reading and implementing patterns. You will choose your own pattern to get started on making a shawl, sweater or afghan. The end result will be a piece that will be unique and made with love! Students please bring a “K” hook, beginner pattern of your choice and a skein of beige 4 ply or worsted weight yarn to class. potteryCome try your hand at making a one-of-a-kind clay project! This two-week course is perfect for beginners and clay veterans alike. Quilling - the Art of paper filigreeWhirl and twirl yourself into the art that dates back to the 16th century when French and Italian nuns created ornate borders to embellish religious articles. During the 18th century, it was a fashionable pastime for ladies. American red Cross lifeguarding CourseThe purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over. To enroll in the Lifeguarding course, you must be at least 15 years old before the last scheduled class session. To participate in the course, you must be able to pass a prerequisite skills evaluation. The prerequisite skills evaluation will occur on the first day of the course. To successfully complete the course, you must attend the entire course, participate in all skill sessions/drills, activities and scenarios, demonstrate competency in all required skills and scenarios, and pass the final written exams with a minimum grade of 80 percent. The practice sessions will require some strenuous physical activity. You are encouraged to check with your healthcare professional before participating in the practice sessions. If a medical condition or disability exists that might prevent participation in the activities, or there are questions about fully participating in the Lifeguarding

course, please contact the NFCSD Community Education Department (716-286-0771) and we will put you in contact with the instructor. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, valid for two years. hatha yogaWe will build breath awareness and flexibility through gentle Hatha-style guided movement and breath work. Mantra and breath work will be introduced throughout the course as yogic tools to deepen practice. hula danceAloha! Explore the beauty of the dances from the Polynesian Islands. Learn and drill core Polynesian Hula style moves! This class will concentrate on hip movements and foot patterns. Each move will be broken down and drilled slowly at first, with the goal of building technique, stamina and speed. This will be a gentle, low impact workout, as well as an effective, medium to high cardiovascular workout. This will be about your hips and core, and help you prepare for your next luau! We will be exercising to music, the beat of the music will count our steps adding up to a mile. We’ll rest and discuss some helpful information related to exercise and weight loss. easy to learn Woman’s self-defenseIn this hands-on self-defense class, you will learn simple but effective moves in the form of joint controls, striking and kicking, pinches and basic pressure points. Beginner pierogi Making for twoStrike up the polkas! It’s time to grab a friend, relative or your spouse for this flour intensive night out! In this class you will learn hands-on techniques for rolling and cutting dough, filling and sealing, cooking and getting your pierogi freezer ready (If they last that long!). You and your cooking partner will make two dozen farmer cheese and two dozen potato and cheddar pierogi to split. Students should bring an apron, gallon Ziploc freezer bags, rolling pin and two cookie sheets to class. Taking a look at one of her most controversial novels, The Bluest Eye and Beloved, we will discuss some serious topics from past and present that affect women in every community. Fundamentals of Digital Photography These courses will teach you how to get the most from your digital camera by understanding the basics of photography. The mission of this course is not only for you to learn theory, but to put that theory into practice, to be more in control of your camera and get the results you want. All courses will require some type of digital camera, preferably a digital SLR camera.

We will cover topics like ISO, aperture, shutter speed, light exposure, manual mode, etc. This will help you be more creative with your camera and give you the ability to get the photos you want. It’s like a field trip every week at various locations around Niagara Falls (First meeting begins at NFHS). enrollMentClass registration is on a first-come basis. We welcome anyone 18 years of age or older (exemption of lifeguard certification class) to enroll in our Community Education Program. The enrollment deadline is one week prior to the start of class. Our program is open to the entire community; we encourage residents of other districts to enroll in our classes as well.

Classes are held based on a minimum enrollment of students registered for a class. As such, NO REFUNDS will be issued past the deadlines stated above. We regret that no exceptions can be made to this policy due to life events, personal or business conflicts that would cause you to cancel. Trips and tours have specific deadlines and are excluded.
