Governmental Affairs Committee (GAC)Takes Positions on Dangerous Business Bills

This legislative session is off to a fast start, moving more quickly than I’ve ever seen in my 20 years with the Albany Area Chamber. The 31 members of the GAC are meeting two or three times per month to review and take positions on Bills that effect business. In addition they are meeting regularly with Rep. Andy Olson and Sen. BUSINESS BUSINESS AFTER AFTER HOURS HOURS

Patrick Patrick Hagerty Hagerty DMD., PC. DMD., PC. March 17th March 17th

March- Expanding HorizonsI find myself struggling with a personal enrichment challenge made a few months back to improve on my culinary skills. To improve would actually mean that I had some skill to begin with so I knew I had a big task ahead of me. My expectations were high going into my fi rst lesson, hoping

my experience with a science lab in my long ago college days had adequately prepared me to measure ingredients, boil water and provide general safety around fi re. I am also quite familiar with utilizing knife and fork as I have been able to eat a lot of really good food over the course of my life so I understood what my outcome should be. To add to the challenge, I needed to adapt my cooking lessons for a gluten free, dairy free lifestyle, which has been easier said than done at times. So as I began my adventure with new determination I couldn’t help but imagine Julia Child bumbling through her fi rst cooking lesson. Did she instinctively know what vegetable was better parboiled or blanched, when they seem so similar? Did she instinctively know you could make a pizza crust out of Caulifl ower, or the fi rst time she heard something needed to be “cut in” it did not mean an interruption? So as I continue to deglaze my pans and scald my cashew milk I have come to appreciate what I didn’t know. What I didn’t know is that there is a whole new world to the culinary arts and with it a whole new language and skill set in which one must get familiar with in order to excel at the task effectively. The Chamber’s Workforce Development Program is doing just that with opening up a whole new world to educators, parents and students in their effort to provide information about the upsides of technical jobs available here locally. According to industry leaders, their companies are actively

looking for skilled labor in our area, with local businesses needing to fi ll more than 1,000 high paying positions over the next fi ve years. The growing use of technology and innovations require skilled workers and educational programs that address the demand for a highly skilled workforce. The Workforce Development Task Force has the task of marketing these programs to potential employees and continuing the collaborative efforts between the Chamber, Industry, Educators, City of Albany and Linn Benton Community College. This collaboration has already lead to face to face experiences for students and instructors as local industries open their doors and participants are able to see how Science,Technology, Engineering and Math can be translated to real world jobs. Recently the City of Albany has agreed to fund $2.9 Million for technical training equipment at Linn Benton Community College. These economic dollars will be used to purchase equipment for one-year certificates and 2 year degree programs at LBCC in non-destructive testing, titanium welding, machine tooling and mechatronics. Opening up a new pool of skilled labor that will be employed right here in the community. Industries are working in partnership with LBCC to develop those programs so potential students/employees are ready to go to work as they graduate from the programs. Unlike my cooking challenge, the Workforce Development Task Force has the right skills and experience to fully complete the vision of developing a stronger workforce for the industries that exist today as well as the industries that move here tomorrow. Stacy KoosCitizens Bank2014-2015 Board Chair

With an estimated 3000 – 5000 Bills to be introduced by the fi rst of March the GAC has its work cut out for them and will be working hard on the behalf of Albany Area Chamber members to advocate for business and pro-business legislation.

Dave Burright was born and raised in Corvallis and graduated from Oregon State University in 1976. Following graduation, he moved to Albany and began work with the Linn County Sheriff's Office where he held a wide variety of positions including working as a Marine Deputy, Patrol Deputy, Crime Prevention Offi cer, Corrections Planning Coordinator, Detective, Training Offi cer, Administrative Lieutenant and Undersheriff.

In January 1995, Burright was appointed Linn County Sheriff following the retirement of Sheriff Art Martinak. He was subsequently elected 3 times to that offi ce until he retired in 2005. Since that time he has worked as the Executive Director of the Oregon State Sheriffs' Association, he's been a part time instructor at Linn Benton Community College and has done private consulting on law enforcement issues.

During his time with the Sheriff's Offi ce, Burright was very active in both local and professional organizations. He has been named the Oregon Sheriffs' Association Sheriff of the Year 3 times, and was named the Chamber's 2002 Jim Linhart First Citizen. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and at the time of his retirement held Department of Public Safety Standards and Training executive certifi cation in both law enforcement and corrections.

During the past year, Burright and former Senator Frank Morse served as co-chairmen of the Public Safety Facilities Review Committee. This was done at the request of the Albany city council following the November 2013 defeat of a bond to fund new police and fi re facilities. This committee explored issues surrounding the defeat of the bond, potential alternatives and funding solutions. As a result, it's anticipated that a new bond election will be put before the voters in May, 2015.

Burright still lives in Albany with Linda, his wife of 39 years. They have 2 grown children and 2 grandchildren. He is enjoying retirement and spends much of his time building boats.

Golden TicketGolden TicketLeslie Parra,

Business Development SpecialistPersonal Background: I was born and raised in Wisconsin. 32 years in Oregon and we’re still big Green Packer fans! I began in healthcare first as a CNA at Wisconsin Veteran’s Home. I later graduated from Fox Valley Technical College from a nursing program and my husband and I literally started our road trip to Oregon the night I graduated. I’ve enjoyed owning and operating my own business and working in all the local skilled nursing facilities over the years. I also enjoyed a few years as an insurance agent working primarily with seniors and their insurance needs. Real estate business has always interested me.

Business Marketing Niche: First American Title just celebrated it’s 125th year Anniversary (1889-2014). In our Albany office alone we have title and escrow staff with over 70 years combined experience. First American was named by The Oregonian, a TOP Workplace in Oregon. Making this career change recently, it seems I joined a team in a great company and am enjoying this new challenge!

Biggest Issue Facing Albany: My first thought on this question was more quality, affordable childcare options for working moms. I not only won this golden ticket but I also was fortunate recently to sit next to Albany mayor Sharon Kanopa and I asked her this same question. I wanted to also share her response: In order for businesses to thrive they need qualified employees. Albany area is fortunate to have many jobs available, but can lack skilled employees. This is an issue nationwide as well. It is great to see Albany’s support in job training for our region’s industries in order to increase family wage jobs. I wanted to share this view too and I really enjoyed my visit with the Mayor.

Chamber Involvement: Our Albany First American team enjoys looking through the chamber newsletter together as soon as it arrives. We all try to get to as many events and meetings as we can because it’s a wonderful chamber. I especially

enjoy the weekly Greeters and rarely miss a week because it starts my day in a positive way. We’re especially excited for our opportunity to host the BAH this coming September!
