A couple of weeks ago my Dad and I were sitting on his back deck enjoying a warm summer evening and some good conversation; as is often the case, our conversation turned to the state of the world and the politics that govern it. Our viewpoints do not always align, but I am grateful for the mutual respect we have for each other and our shared belief that meaningful change starts at the local level. Growing up my Dad, Big “D” as we like to call him, was a man of action – if he saw a problem, he didn’t just talk about it, he pooled the necessary resources to fi x it. Whether it was advocating at the local and state levels for pro-business legislature or building partnerships to construct a skate park so every kid had a place to practice their athleticism, he was always working across party lines to come up with solutions that had a positive impact in our community. Albany is fortunate to have a Chamber that not only advocates for pro-business, pro-jobs legislature and elected officials, but that also partners with local government, industry and education to institute meaningful change for the future workforce. Supporting the Chamber staff in these important initiative are dozens of member volunteers that also share the belief that change starts at the local level. These volunteers donate a great deal of time and resources to put on impactful programs and events to support Chamber members like the Albany

Business Extravaganza, monthly membership f o r u m s , L e a d e r s h i p Albany, Youth Leadership Albany, Business After Hours and workforce development through the Pipeline program. As we appreciate those volunteers it’s a great time to ask ourselves, how will I take action to lead change at the local level? Start by joining us for the Membership Lunch Forum on September 21st at the Linn County Fairgrounds during the Albany Business Extravaganza where Bud Pierce, Republican Gubernatorial candidate, will share his vision for making Oregon a better place to live and work. While you’re there, stop by the Chamber table to inquire about how you can use your time and resources to get more involved in making some meaningful change in our great community! The ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do. – Steve Jobs

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. – Winston Churchill

Your No Vote on Measure 97 Protects Oregonians From Increased Costs Measure 97 would increase the cost of doing business and living in Oregon. It would impact everyone including the citizens and businesses in Albany and our area (every consumer in the state). Some quick facts about Measure 97: Measure 97 would tax sales, not profi ts. Businesses that have a small profi t, or no profi t at all would still have to pay this huge new tax increase. In short, even if a business loses money, they would still be subject to a huge new tax. There is no guarantee and no plan for how Measure 97’s Billions in new taxes would be spent. There is no accountability to Oregonians that this money would be spent on real issues the state is facing. All of the new taxes would go to the State General Fund, with no plan for addressing the real needs of Oregon schools, small businesses, seniors and families. Measure 97 would cost the average Oregon household more than $600 every year, according to the nonpartisan Legislative Revenue Offi ce. It would increase the cost of nearly everything Oregonians buy – gas, utility bills like electricity and the internet, medicine, clothing, food, even some service. Measure 97 would result in a loss of more than 38,000 private sector jobs and increase Public Sector Employee numbers by almost 20,000, according to the nonpartisan Legislative Revenue Offi ce. Private sector businesses pay the way and their job loss has negative, real impacts to small businesses, families and every day Oregonians.

Think it! Make it! Middle School Manufacturing Camp

24 6-8 graders from Lebanon, Corvallis, Albany and surrounding areas participated in the four day camp featured hands on activities overseen by NAMS teacher Nick Asay and LBCC Welding, Machine Tool, CADD/Engineering and Mechatronics instructors. Campers designed and built projects allowing them the opportunity to experience the satisfaction of creating something they can show off with pride.

Please be sure to like our Pipeline to Jobs Facebook and Twitter and check out the camp video created by Diamond Eye Digital - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIzuPaVtgZ4#action=share

Students toured OFD Foods and learned about manufacturing and what kinds of jobs exist, the skills and training required, and how those businesses developed. They had presentations from several local manufacturing company owners how they started their businesses, applying basic entrepreneurship principles to understand how a single product idea becomes a business.

Student quotes:“I loved all of it. It was all really fun and I would love to do it next year. I also learned so much cool stuff that I didn’t know.”“My favorite part was touring OFD. We even got to eat freeze dried stuff.”“My favorite guest speaker was Selmet because they have really cool products and they had a good company benefi ts. I learned how they process titanium.”“I’m totally coming next year!”

Other Volunteer Experience: I am a member of the Greater Albany Rotary Club and the Albany Kiwanis Club. Both organizations have allowed me to volunteer in numerous ways and I am an active participant in many charitable events.

Volunteer Leadership Roles: I am the chairman of the Linn County Dictionary Project through Rotary and I am a Kiwanis Board Member.

Brief personal history: I have lived in Albany for 10 years. I am married to my wonderful wife Natalie and have an amazing daughter, Beatrice and a 2nd daughter due to arrive this December. I grew up in Coos Bay. Worked in construction and became a journeyman electrician before attending Oregon State University where I received a M.S. in Economics. Upon graduation I went to work for D.A. Davidson Companies out of Portland as a Financial Advisor. After 2 years, I was recruited by Edwards Jones here in Albany.
