This pickup was a Dodge Ram 50 about twenty-five years old. Piece-by-piece the body parts were being removed by visitors and passers-by. I will be honest, since we drive the same style truck, I perused around the chassis but found nothing that I wanted to salvage. I had come too late to pick a part. All the best parts were gone. Strangely enough, one day at the auto parts store in Lihue the fellow in front of me in line was trying to purchase a gas tank for his Ram 50. The cost was prohibitive, probably worth more than the truck itself, so I mentioned to him that the gas tank of this pickup in Waimea was still up for grabs. He thanked me. I soon noticed that indeed the gas tank that had been there before was now missing. I hope he enjoyed his free gas tank. One day about two weeks ago, the rump frame of the derelict truck disappeared completely. I do not know what happened to it. I understand that the Surfrider Organization on Kauai has been out trying to pick up all of the salvage vehicles on the island to recycle the metal and get rid of the eyesore. Was it them? I do not know. At about that same time, a pastor from the east side of Kauai called me up to ask how to get rid of a truck that somebody had just left on church property. "Oh, just leave it out long enough and the issue of the truck will take care of itself. Orrrrr, put it on Craig's List online and sell the parts to make some money for the church!" I responded in earnest. We have a special way of looking at things here on Kauai. Only on Kauai have I heard folks asking: "What happened to the gold, frankincense, and myrrh that Jesus got from the three wise men? Did he keep it or give it away?" "What did Jesus do with the donkey that he borrowed for his triumphal entry into Jerusalem? Did somebody else ride it back home again?" "What happened to the extra bread and wine at the Last Supper? Was it given to the needy?" On this island we always try to get the most use out of everything! To do this, we share and share alike. Continued on back page...

... continued from front pageIn Luke 10, Jesus sends His disciples

out on a mission to tell of the coming of theKingdom of God. They are to take no "purse,no bag, no sandals." They are to stay inpeople's homes whom they have never metbefore and bless those homes by doing this.Get the most use and share it back out again!Make the most of what God gives you!Salvage everything and everyone you can forGod. Church is one big salvage operation.

The following excerpt is from Daily SteppingStones by Helen Steiner Rice (published byFleming H. Revell Company in New Jersey1989)

So many things in the line of dutyDrain us of effort and leave us no beautyAnd the dust of the soul grows thick and

unsweptAnd the spirit is drenched in tears unweptBut just as we fall beside the roadDiscouraged with life and bowed down with

our loadWe lift our eyes, and what seemed a dead

endIs the street of dreams where we meet a

friend (34).
