Introduction

Whilst researching the historical background regarding the development of Landford and the ownership of

the larger estates, it soon became apparent that members of the Eyre family played an important role in the

social and political life of this part of Wiltshire. Much of the information regarding the earliest known

records relating to the Eyre family was taken from the website entitled Eyre History, A One-Name Study –

Guild of One-Name Studies. However, differences between this and other websites indicate that 100%

accuracy is not guaranteed, particularly regarding the early members of this family. Anyone using this

website for family reasons needs to be aware of this.

The purpose of this document is to augment the family details given in the other sections on this website

relating to both the Newhouse and Landford Manor estates. It provides further information on some of the

earlier members of the Eyre family and how they became settled in Wiltshire and at the same time pulls

together genealogical details in a more convenient form. Not all lines of the descendants are given, but just

those that led to the families that settled in the south east of the county. The association with the various

estates can be found in the other sections dealing with Newhouse and Landford Manor. Appendix 3 provides

further information on other families connected with the Eyres.

Derivation of the name Eyre

There is general agreement that the family name did not appear before 1066 and irrespective of the various

Norman spellings of the name, there is no evidence that the family came across from France during the

Norman invasion. In the Domesday Book for the Hundred of Frustfield at Alwerberie it states that "Edward

holds a yard-land in Alwerberie. Bode tenuit tempore Regis Edward. Valet 40 denarii." There is no doubt he

was the predecessor of a family which subsequently held the same quantity of land in the parish of

Alderbury by the serjeanty of keeping the King's harriers, at the kings own expense, and they assumed their

surname from that office. The keepers of the harriers were called, "Canes Heyerez, Heyricii or Harecti.”

This is in keeping with the subsequent royal appointments as Forester etc. The surname changed over time

from le Here, le Heyr, le Eyr to Eyre.

Time Line

Confusion arises when a family uses two different names, and that appears to be the case here. The early

members used the name le Blount (various spellings), but following the fall of William le Blount at

Evesham in 1264 (the Second Barons' War against Henry III), the Blount family was disinherited and they

ceased to use that name. Consequently, in various documents the same individual may be referred to by two

different surnames.

The spelling of names varies according to the place, period and local pronunciation, but events tend to tie the

individuals together. Also, legal documents were written in either Latin or Norman French, which also tends

to confuse the names of various individuals, e.g. Galfridus (Geoffrey), Galecia (Alice), etc.

1228 –

The Blount and Ferrer families were both connected to forestry, as was the Lisle family. Brian Lisle

became Chief Forest Justiciar in 1228. At the time he was holding land in a part of the Borough of

Devizes, which controlled Melksham Forest and was part of the Queen's jointure. Brian was also

Bailiff of the Peak (Derbyshire) from 1222 to 1228.

A History of Landford in Wiltshire

Appendix 2 – The Eyres of Newhouse, Brickworth, Landford and Bramshaw

John Martin (Jan 2019) Page 3 of 28

The common ancestor appears to be a Geoffrey le Blount who was known to have been in Wiltshire

and Derbyshire during the period when Brian de Lisle was bailiff of the Peak and Chief Forest

Justiciar.

In Wiltshire there was a family of Humphredi le Heyr de Bromham, his wife Galecia and sons

Galfridus and Nicholas. Galfridus being the eldest was heir to his father. Galfridus bestowed

property on Nicholas for his homage and service. Also there is a copy of an agreement made by

Galecia, giving Nicholas land that she had held in her own right. This agreement is undated but it is

thought to date in the reign of Henry III (1227-1272). Humphredi le Heyr was a Forester for fee of

the ancient forest of Melksham. [The use of the name Humphredi implies it was the descendants of

Humphredus le Heyr who held this position.]

It is interesting to note that the Foljambe family also used the same crest used by the Heyr family. It

may be Galecia wife of Humphrey who could well be a Foljambe, who were of Derbyshire. The land

that Galecia settled on her second son Nicholas was in Hope, Derbyshire, which would explain why

it was not part of the Wiltshire estate that Galfridus inherited on the death of his father. The

Foljambe were related to the Ferrer by marriage, which could mean the second son Nicholas could

have been in Ferrer employ in a military capacity. It is a fact a Ferrer was sent by King John to

Derbyshire to rout some of the Barons who had taken possession of the King's holdings in that

county during the revolt by the barons. The Ferrer held huge holdings resulting from the Conquest.

Also Catherine le Heyr, daughter of William le Heyr of Hope, married Sir Thomas Foljambe (1265-

1297) whose manor and principal residence was Hassop Hall, which the Eyres then came to own.

1250 –

Geoffrey, the son of Nicholas le Blount held the Etchilhampton estate near Devizes in Wiltshire.

William le Heyr (Derbyshire) who died in 1299 held an appointment of "Hereditary Forester of the

Peak" in 1250. He was succeeded by son Robert.

1260’s –

Richard le Eyr, son of Geoffrey le Blount above, inherited the Etchilhampton estate.

1264 –

Blount family was disinherited following the fall of William at Evesham in 1264.

1270 –

Richard le Eyr is recorded in the protection clauses of the 8th crusade in 1270 but it would appear

that he did not return. Also mentioned in the protection clauses are Robert and Nicholas, and as

Nicholas Blount (or Heyr) was the brother of Geoffrey, he was a son of Richard and it would be fair

to assume that Robert was his brother, so also a son of Richard.

1274 –

Deeds of the Eyre family at Bromham (near Devizes, Wilts) which probably relate to the land

inquests ordered by Edward I in 1274, recorded amongst other witnesses, Rog le Blount and Willm

le Blunt and in another document Wanthelin (Walkelin) le Blont and Rog le Blount. William, Alice

and Robert Blund were recorded as free tenants of Bromham during the same reign.

Page 4: A History of Landford in Wiltshire · In Wiltshire there was a family of Humphredi le Heyr de Bromham, his wife Galecia and sons Galfridus and Nicholas. Galfridus being the eldest

Appendix 2 – The Eyres of Newhouse, Brickworth, Landford and Bramshaw

John Martin (Jan 2019) Page 4 of 28

William Blount is also recorded as witness to one of the deeds noted in the herald's visitations of

Eyre at Bromham. Presumably, Walkelin le Blount was also a son of Nicholas and brother to

William.

One of the documents states that Nicholas le Eyr paid homage to his brother Geoffrey for his land

and during this period, Geoffrey le Blount was holding land nearby at Etchilhampton, Wiltshire.

Nicholas proved his claim, by producing a witnessed statement that he paid homage to his brother for

the land. Such a document was recorded in the Herald's Visitations stating that his brother was

Geoffrey le Here de Bromham. It was witnessed by Walthelin le Blont and Rog. Le Blount, so it

must have predated 1293 because Walkelin had obviously died by then.

1275 –

Richard le Eyr may have had two more sons because in a Derbyshire deed of about 1275 at

Bradbourne, amongst the testators were Geoffrey (Blundus) and Peter (Blundus). Geoffrey was also

the clericus.

1280 -

Geoffrey le Eyr (Blount) had succeeded to his father Richard's land at Etchilhampton. He died 1280.

Also at Potterne, Geoffrey de "Etchelhampton" is recorded as having died in 1280 leaving his son

Richard (aged 8 and therefore a minor) as his heir but not old enough to take charge of his father’s

estates.

1285 –

Referring to William le Heer, it was found in the "forest eyre" that William and his ancestors had

been holding the offices of foresters of fee since the time of Pevril (early 12th

century). The land of

his father which Robert le Eyr paid homage for being originally that of Richard le Eyr who appears

to have died in c.1270 during the 8th crusade. There must have been a reason for the findings of

1285, the land possibly remained in dispute until the matter was finally settled at a higher level.

1287 –

Another document is recorded in the visitations referring to Galfridus le Eyr de Bromham and dated

1287, witnessed by Stepho. Le Ere. There must have been a reason why these documents were

produced in the first place but assuming Nicholas was a Blount, his brother must have been Geoffrey

le Blount.

1292 –

Richard, son of Geoffrey le Eyr (Blount), was now old enough to enter the estate inherited from his

father.

1293 –

In 1293 other land of Alice reverted to John de la Roche. It would appear that Alice, the relict of

Walkelin le Blount, had remarried a Thomas Allway, which must have brought the land into dispute

(previously mentioned). John Roche either proved his right as an heir or was accepted as mesne lord

of the manor.

1297 –

Page 5: A History of Landford in Wiltshire · In Wiltshire there was a family of Humphredi le Heyr de Bromham, his wife Galecia and sons Galfridus and Nicholas. Galfridus being the eldest

A History of Landford in Wiltshire

Appendix 2 – The Eyres of Newhouse, Brickworth, Landford and Bramshaw

John Martin (Jan 2019) Page 5 of 28

For some unknown reason John Roche was unable to take the entire manor but in 1297, Nicholas le

Eyr and Amy his wife, were also granted land by Thomas and Alice "Aloway" together with a

reversion of the other 1/3 of the property (1/3 of an estate was a usual dower allowance) held in

dower by William and Amy Philip. Nicholas was not lord of the manor so as it reverted, he must

have been an heir of the Blount's.

In 1297 the settlement was recorded in the Feet of Fines when dower lands of Alice, relict of

Walkelin le Blount, reverted to Nicholas le Eyr.

1299 –

William le Eyr of Hope, Derbyshire, held a bovate of land there by service in the forest of Hopedale

and died 1299.

c.1300 –

Galfridus le Eyr gave evidence about the grant of Blakeland to the Abbey, and which gave rise to the

lawsuit over the gift of land by Richard le Eyr.

1301 –

From 1301 to 1322 a Stephen Heyr/Eyr of Chesterfield is frequently recorded, sometimes styled,

Stephen fil Rich le Heir and Stephen le Clerk. He became bailiff of the Borough of Chesterfield and

was probably Bailiff of the Wakes at one time.

c.1333 –

Another Geoffrey Blount inherited Richard's land at Etchilhampton around 1333; he held the estate

until 1363 when succeeded by his daughter Margaret.

1338 –

A deed granted by Queen Philippa to Geoffrey le Eyr for continuation of his previous appointment to

the bailiwick of Melksham Forest at Bromham.

1346 –

Geoffrey le Eyr was granted a license to hear service in the chapel of his mansion house at

Bromham.

1363 –

Geoffrey Blount was succeeded by his daughter Margaret, wife of Walter de Frampton. When the

line of Geoffrey Blount died out at Etchilhampton in 1363, the name stops appearing in Eyre records

as does "Richard".

1430 –

Robert le Eyr was recorded holding a tenement at Bromham.

1498 –

John Eyre held Crookwood Mill, described as at Eastcott. (Became East Crook Mill).

1517 –

John Eyre still held Crookwood Mill, described as at Eastcott

Page 6: A History of Landford in Wiltshire · In Wiltshire there was a family of Humphredi le Heyr de Bromham, his wife Galecia and sons Galfridus and Nicholas. Galfridus being the eldest

1554 –

Another John died seised of the freehold of Crookwood Mill and also died whilst in possession of a

tenement in Wedhampton. He was succeeded by his son John.

1579 –

John Eyre’s second marriage to Elizabeth Dauntsey, and he settled the Wedhampton estate on her for

her lifetime. That included East Crook Mill.

1581 –

William Eyre succeeded his father John, to whom Elizabeth released her lifetime estates.

1624 –

Sir William Eyre settled the estate on Henry, the younger son of his second marriage to Elizabeth

Jackman (d. 1622).

1629 -

Sir William died in 1629 and was succeeded by son Henry (d. before 1649).

1649 -

William Eyre held the Wedhampton estate.

1653 –

William Eyre and his wife Sarah conveyed East Crook Mill, together with some land, to Robert

Amor.

1660 –

William Eyre died and the lands passed to his son Henry, who held a farm comprising four yardlands

at Wedhampton in the early 18th century. [A yardland varied in size between 15 and 40 acres

depending on the region.]

1772 –

Henry Eyre sold the Wedhampton estate (115 acres) to William & Michael Tichborne.

Early members of the Eyre family

Sir Humphrey le Heyr (b.1150) Born at Bromham, Wilts.

Recorded as the Forester for fee of the ancient forest of Melksham. He is the first recorded member

of Eyre family, probably of Saxon origins, descendants of Edward, Keeper of the Harriers (Hounds)

for William the Conqueror as written in the Domesday Book. As a crusader, Humphrey le Heyr

accompanied King Richard I to the Holy Lands in the 3rd Crusade. Humphredi le Eyr (descendants

of Humphredus le Eyr) were Foresters for fee of the ancient forest of Melksham.

[John was Mayor of New Sarum in 1567]

Judging by his will, John Eyre senior, who lived at Chirton, was a sheep-farmer. The Eyre family

was established at Wedhampton as customary tenants of the abbess of St. Mary, Winchester, as early

as the 14th century, and by the early 16th century had acquired a freehold estate there. In 1554 John

Eyre died whilst in possession of a tenement in Wedhampton and was succeeded by his son John,

who, on the occasion of his second marriage to Elizabeth Dauntsey in 1579, settled his Wedhampton

estate, including East Crook Mill, on her as a life estate. John Eyre died in 1581 and was succeeded

by his son William, to whom his stepmother Elizabeth subsequently released her life estate. In 1624

Sir William Eyre settled the estate on Henry, the younger son of his second marriage to Elizabeth

Jackman (d. 1622). Sir William died in 1629 and was succeeded by Henry (d. before 1649). Henry's

heir was his son William upon whose death in 1660 the lands passed to William's son Henry, who

held a farm comprising four yardlands at Wedhampton in the early 18th century. In 1722 Henry Eyre

sold the estate, reckoned at 115 acres in 1732, to William Tichborne and his brother Michael.

In 1498 and 1517 Crookwood Mill was held by John Eyre and described as at Eastcott. Another John

died seised of the freehold in 1554. Known in the 16th and 17th centuries as East Crook Mill, it

descended with the Eyre estate at Wedhampton until 1653 when William Eyre and his wife Sarah

conveyed it, together with some land, to Robert Amor.

s. William (1555-1629). (See below)

Inherited the Wedhampton estates of step-mother Elizabeth Dauntsey

m. 1579, Elizabeth dau Richard Dauntsey of Potterne. (d. 1606)

In 1695 an anonymous note was added to a manuscript cartulary of the manor of Great Chalfield in

Wiltshire. Among other things, the note describes the end of Giles Tropnell (d. 1553), the young

owner of the manor nearly 150 years earlier. Giles, …

“being at man’s estate, died by an unfortunate accident, as hunting, putting one end of a pair

of dog couples over his head, running after his sport, and leaping over a hedge, the end of the

dog couple which hung at his back took hold of a bough [and] kept him from touching the

ground until he was strangled.”

As the husband of Anne Tropnell, eldest of the four sisters and co-heiresses of Giles (who died

whilst a minor), Eyre thereby found himself the possessor of a large proportion of the extensive

Tropnell estates, including the principal seat of Chalfield, ‘one of the most perfect examples of the

late medieval English manor house’. With this went the constableship of Trowbridge castle—always

held by the owner of Chalfield—more than 12 other manors in the north-west of the county,

including Neston, Corsham, Hartham, Allington, Broughton Gifford and Whaddon, and valuable

property in Chippenham and Salisbury. Giles Tropnell having died accidentally in 1553, all this

property was confirmed to Eyre and his wife four years later and they settled it on themselves and

their heirs in 1563. In this way Eyre became one of the leading landowners in Wiltshire and a

prominent figure in its local government.

Though they had hitherto been but minor gentry, the Eyres were one of the oldest families in the

county. They owned the manors of Wedhampton, Urchfont and Chirton, compact group of estates

which came to Eyre on his father’s death in 1554, save for a life interest in Chirton for the widow.

Judging by his will, John Eyre senior, who lived at Chirton, was a sheep-farmer. Eyre himself, after

acquiring the Tropnell estates, spent little time in his family’s original home. When, however, he

remarried in 1579, he arranged that his wife would enjoy a life annuity of £20 from these lands.

Sir William Eyre (1556-1629)

Only son of John Eyre of Wedhampton and Chirton and Anne, eldest dau Thomas Tropnell.

Bap 01 Jan 1556, succeeded father in 1581, knighted Sep 1592, d. 24 Aug 1629.

William Eyre married into one of the wealthiest and politically most prominent of north Wiltshire

families, and in 1581 inherited his father’s considerable estates, which numbered more than a dozen

manors, including the family’s principal estate at Great Chalfield. His second marriage to the

daughter of a wealthy London merchant greatly increased his financial security. His family was

further allied to the local gentry by his daughter’s marriage to John, eldest son of Sir Walter Long, by

which Eyre became related to Sir John Thynne of Longleat. Eyre’s extensive properties ensured that

his subsidy assessment was consistently the highest in the region; he was also able to afford a town

house in London.

In about 1598 Eyre was listed as one of the six most important gentlemen of Wiltshire. His brief

removal from the magistrates’ bench in early 1599 may have been associated with a serious attack

made upon him in London some months earlier. In April 1603 he was appointed deputy lieutenant of

Wiltshire under Edward Seymour, 1st earl of Hertford. He proved to be conscientious in the post, but

in 1604-5 sided against the election of Hertford’s secretary as muster-master for the county. As a

result, Eyre’s division was one of several which delayed musters and refused to contribute towards

muster payments.

William Eyre was elected MP for Heytesbury in 1604, a borough controlled by the Thynnes; but he

left no trace upon the records of the first Jacobean Parliament. He does not appear to have stood

again. He died at Great Chalfield on 24 Aug 1629, and was buried in the chapel adjoining the manor

house. In his will, made in 1627, he left the manors of Woddington, Little Chalfield and Neston to

three of his surviving sons, and named Lucy, his daughter by his second marriage, as sole executrix.

For reasons that he did not make clear he attempted to disinherit his eldest son, Sir John, who

nevertheless obtained an annulment of the will and assumed the administration of the remaining

estates in 1630. The latter had by this time sat in three Parliaments, and Eyre’s third son by his first

marriage, Sir William, represented nearby Westbury during the Commonwealth.

John’s marriage to Dorothy Bulstrode, ‘a woman of excellent parts and ingenuity’,

was made without the consent of their families, but she had the advantage of being a

gentlewoman of the bedchamber to Anne of Denmark, and it was probably through

this connection that Eyre was appointed a gentleman of the privy chamber. However,

his behaviour towards Dorothy led her nephew, (Sir) James Whitelocke to describe

Eyre as ‘one of the most dissolute, unjust, and vicious reprobates that lives upon the

face of the earth.’ Notwithstanding such a character, he held various royal

appointments and for a time travelled abroad. During the same period he was elected

MP for Cricklade in 1614, for Calne in 1626 and Chippenham in 1628.

Eyre succeeded his father at Great Chalfield in 1629, but sold the manor two years

later to Sir Richard Gurney, lord mayor of London. When he wrote his will on 18 July

1639, he possessed only £250 in cash and some household goods. He bequeathed a

gilt bowl and cover to his brother Robert, and a silver basin and ewer to a friend, but

The Eyres Of Brickworth

From Wiltshire Notes and Queries, Sept 1905

The Brickworth estate which formed part of the thithing of Abbotstone, was conveyed on 15 May

1605 to Giles Eyre, then of Redlynch, by Richard Plott of Wantage, Berks and John Lamb of

Coulston Wilts for the sum of £950 and in 1628, William, the brother of Giles, granted him “all his

lands in Brickworth”. The Eyre family was connected with this tithing as far back as Edward II’s

reign when we find in the Nomina Villarum a Thomas le Eyre mentioned as one of the three

proprietors in this tithing of Abbotstone.

m. Harriet (1725-1799), his cousin and dau of John Eyre, of Putney, London.

She died 05 Jan 1799 and was bur 10 Jan 1799 aged 74

Henry Eyre inherited the estate of his great uncle John Eyre (1665-1715) (see above), and succeeded

to the Brickworth estate of his uncle Giles Eyre (1693-1750) (see above). He was succeeded by his

brother John Eyre (1722-1799).

NB.

There appears to be an anomaly here concerning the inheritance of Henry and John if their birth

dates are correctly recorded. History records state that Henry was the first son of John Eyre (1693-

1725) and John his second son. However, parish records show that there was an earlier son Henry

born in 1720, suggesting that he died after John was born. Did the second Henry inherit the estates

mentioned in lieu of his older same named sibling?

Henry’s first wife Sarah had an interesting (!) life, being married three times. She was born Sarah

Penrose on 11 June 1752 at Newbury, Berks. She was the youngest child of the Rev

Thomas Penrose, the Rector of Newbury, and his wife Ann Head. Sarah first married Samuel Enys

on 8 Apr 1771 with whom she had a son John and daughters Lucy and Caroline. Samuel inherited his

father’s substantial estates in Cornwall, but he died shortly afterwards in 1776 and his estates were

inherited by son John. Sarah then settled in Donnington near Newbury, where Samuel previously had

a house, not far from her childhood home.

On 18 Feb 1779, Sarah married the Rev John Hersent Thorpe of Embley Park, near Wellow. Her

brother Thomas Penrose took the service at Shaw Church, Newbury. That same year, her son John

(who was only 8yrs of age) made complaint in Chancery (probably at the instigation of her elder

brothers) against her regarding Sarah’s use of money from Samuel’s estates having been used for her

marriage settlement with John, and to which she was not entitled. They set up home at Embley Park

and their son William was born in Jan 1780. John Thorpe died in Dec 1780 and his son William soon

afterwards in 1782.

At this point Sarah appears to have moved to Salisbury and on 15 Oct 1783 she married the Rev

Henry Eyre. Their first son Henry was born in 1784. Sarah wrote her will in April 1785 and died

soon after and was buried in the chancel of St Andrew’s Church, Landford on 30 Jul 1785. It is only

speculation, but this coincides with the birth of their second son John.

Frances Elizabeth Eyre, Countess Nelson (1796-1878) Born on 1 Mar 1796

The only child of John Maurice Eyre (1753-1815). Up until the death of her husband, Countess

Nelson was living at Brickworth Manor. The 1861 Census shows that by then she had moved into

Landford Manor along with the unmarried children. These were Maurice, by then a Commander in

the Royal Navy, Henry an estate manager and their sister Susanna. Her youngest son Henry occupied

Whitehouse Farm and died as the result of an accident when the horse he was riding bolted and he

was unseated and dragged along the ground, causing severe head injuries from which he died. A

more detailed account of her life is given in the section for Landford Manor.

The Crosthwaite-Eyres Of Bramshaw

At one time until the county and parish boundary changes of the late 19th

century, the eastern part of

Bramshaw was part of Wiltshire. In 1798 George Eyre (1772-1837) purchased the original estate known as

Warrens and it remained in the possession of this family until the heiress Dorothy Muriel Eyre married John

Symons Crosthwaite in 1912. At that point the family changed their name to Crosthwaite-Eyre.

All of the Eyres referred to in this narrative can trace their ancestry back to the common ancestor, Thomas

Eyre of New Sarum (1535-1628).
