Eden Stampede 4H News On Saturday July 11th the Eden Stampede 4-H Club held their first horse show of the season at Sicurella Arena in Farnham. This show was filled with gaming events and an extreme trail challenge! Riders went through challeng-ing obstacles including a car wash, limbo, noodle gate, and even had to have their horse kick a ball into a soccer net! Instead of ribbons we gave out fun prizes including water buckets, Stagecoach West gift cards, horse head keychains, car decals, fly spray, vet wrap, brushes, and lots of yummy horse treats! We had delicious snacks to eat and amaz-ing girls helping out throughout the day with announcing, working the snack stand, handing out prizes and setting up and taking down patterns. We had a blast watching our friends compete! Southtowns Catholic School Visits Chiavetta's Greenhouse

Southtowns Catholic School Preschool 3 took a field trip to Chiavetta’s Greenhouse in Angola. Mrs. Kellie Chiavetta explained about seeds, read them a book about what flow-ers need to grow and had a diagram of a flower so that the children could label it. After the snack, Mrs. Chiavetta sent them on a scavenger hunt to look for flowers. The students were handed a picture of a flower and had to go and find it. PICKS OF THE WEEK“Strangerland” (R) -- In a dusty town in the Australian desert, a mother is pushed into a nightmare when her two teenage children dis-appear in the middle of the night. Nicole Kidman and Joseph Fiennes play Cath-erine and Matthew Parker, a couple already dealing with a divide in their marriage and alarmingly provoca-tive behavior from their 15-year-old daughter. After the disappearance, a local policeman (Hugo Weaving) leads the search as an epic dust storm swallows the town. The cinematography and setting shine, which carries the sense of isolation and smallness you’re supposed to feel. Kidman does a great job maneuvering the heavy emotions set on her char-acter. Unfortunately, the movie struggles with pacing while the script keeps hit-ting the same notes of dread and anxiety.

“Little Boy” (PG) -- Rent this movie, and you’ll see something so syrupy, senti-mental and gosh-darn cute that even Norman Rockwell would groan. The movie follows the precious Pep-per, a bullied 8-year-old boy whose father has been taken off to the Pacifi c by World War II. The boy looks to his church for help and gets lessons about the power of faith (which he confuses with a magic act). As a fa-vor to the priest, a persecut-ed Japanese-American man mentors Pepper, who re-cently vandalized his house.Watching this is like try-ing to eat a too-sweet ap-ple pie frosted with bits of

Hallmark cards and salty tears. There isn’t a single moment that isn’t oversold with narration or musical cues. There are even a few cringe-worthy parts where the movie’s tone totally misses the mark and tries to be cute about something very dark.

“5 to 7” (R) -- In the clean and shiny part of New York, Brian (Anton Yeltsin), de-spite being 24 and a strug-gling novelist (probably the second most popular oc-cupation for fi ctional male characters in NYC), some-how manages to charm Arielle, a French woman in her early 30s -- sophis-ticated, sublimely beauti-ful and married with kids. Not to worry! Arielle and her husband have a very French arrangement where extramarital affairs are OK between the hours of 5 and

The Doctor Has Heard It AllDEAR DR. ROACH: This question is just too embar-rassing for me to even sign my name. I get many infect-ed pubic hairs that are pain-ful. Is this normal? Do other people get them? I have had them off and on my whole life, but the past two years have been just awful. Some are like boils, and it takes them many weeks to go away. What can I do?I have never mentioned this to my doctor. I won’t even go for my Pap test if I have one, because I don’t want the doctor to see it. -- Anon.

ANSWER: Infected hair follicles are common, and when they are in the pubic area or in the armpits, they can be quite painful and last a long time. They often are caused by Staphylococcus, which nowadays can be re-sistant to multiple antibiot-ics (MRSA).Please don’t be embarrassed by these. I guarantee you that your doctor has seen them many times before. The sooner you are seen, the faster you can get relief. And you certainly don’t want to delay important tests like your Pap for these common infections.***DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 56-year-old female. I re-cently have been having ter-rible pain in my joints. It is so bad at night that I can’t sleep. I recently went to a rheumatologist because I had an elevated rheumatoid factor (it wasn’t extreme-ly high). I was told I have arthritis and a high risk for

rheumatoid arthritis. I was then diagnosed with fi bro-myalgia. I was shocked and embarrassed! I had always thought that fi bro was not a real disease. I feel bad and tired almost every day, and I am so sick of it! -- S.S.

ANSWER: Some of my colleagues still doubt it, but I think that fi bromyalgia certainly is a real disease. There is no doubt that there are a large number of peo-ple with chronic pain in the muscles and soft tissues who meet the diagnostic tests for fi bromyalgia, which are all based on history and exam -- there’s no blood test or X-ray for fi bromyalgia, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t real. The current thinking is that fi bromyalgia is due to alterations in the perception of pain by the central ner-vous system.The most common symptom is aching in the body, usual-ly in the muscles and joints.

Fatigue and poor-qualitysleep also are nearly univer-sal in fi bromyalgia.Depression is highly prev-alent in people with fi bro-myalgia, and in my opinion,the depression is more likelycaused by the chronic painand fatigue than the otherway around.My opinion is that it is bet-ter to have a diagnosis of fi bromyalgia because, eventhough fi bromyalgia isn’tcompletely understood, itis a starting point for under-standing and treating chron-ic pain.Tricyclic antidepressantsare the most common initialtreatment of fi bromyalgia,because they affect the waypain is processed. They areusually started at far, far be-low the effective dose fordepression.Feeling a sense of controlover the pain, continuing towork and exercising moreare all associated with a bet-ter outcome in fi bromyalgia.
