SCS GRADE 2 ANIMAL HABITAT Students in Mrs. Jennifer Hill's Grade 2 class made habi-tat diorama's. Every student had to pick an animal and re-search it. The diorama had to include, the animal, where the animal lived & what the animal eats. When they were done, everyone had to present their animal to the class. SCS LEAF SCIENCE LAB Students in Miss Erica Aikin's Grade 5 Science Class did a Science lab experiment on leaves. The students broke in to small groups and made predictions of what color would come from the leaves. The kids cut the leaves into small pieces, mashed them with a spoon and placed them in a cup with rubbing alcohol. After 15 minutes, the kids added a strip of paper towel and they watched the towel turn green. The lab showed how chlorophyll is responsible for the green color of a plant's leaves. Every student at SCS got the chance to do some Christ-mas shopping for the upcoming holidays. The PTG set up the hall with a wide variety of items that ranged from .25¢ to $10. SS. Peter & Paul School Technology Teacher Aaron Odden has had fun incorporating the popular game Mine-craft into the classroom. “When Minecraft was first getting very popular, I saw an interview with a teacher who created a version of Mine-craft designed for use in schools and how other teachers had begun using the game in their classroom,” said Odden. “I knew that it was popular with the students here and because we had just updated our computer lab, I knew I had the resources to bring the game to Saints Peter and Paul. The more students are interested in what they are working on, the more they will take away from it. Minecraft’s popular-ity is part of what makes it an effective teaching tool.” Students will be working cooperatively and demonstrat-ing good digital etiquette and communication as laid out in the Diocesan Technology curriculum. Students in second and third grade will have silent Minecraft days where they can only communicate by typing to each other in order to practice finding letters on the keyboard and demonstrate proper typing technique. For other subjects, older students will do research on other societies through history and build towns based on their research and write an accompanying essay. They will be working on walk-through book reports where students rec-reate their favorite settings from books and guide players through the story using carefully placed signs. Third and fourth graders will be learning about area and perimeter by building fences and filling them in with blocks. They can even work on making bar graphs in first grade and eighth graders can conduct physics experiments with the in game gravity and compare that with gravity in the real world. Odden is also offering a Minecraft club afterschool for fourth to eighth grade. “I hope students take to heart what it means to be a good digital citizen and how to behave and work with others in a digital environment, said Odden. “I also hope, because their interest level in the game is so high, that whatever they learned while making their project stays with them longer.” Pictured above from left are Nicholas McCulloch and Gillian Tagliaferro.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNUAL ELECTION DINNER The Eden Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Election Dinner was held on Thursday, November 21st , 2013 when they honored Mary Lou Schwanz as their 2013’s Citizen of the Year and Dr. Franklin H. Meyer’s Dental Office as 2013’s Business of the Year at the Four Corners Café. Mrs. Schwanz had been a Town Clerk for Eden for many years. During her tenure she put into action systems that changed the way Eden does business and continues to use many of those systems today. Mrs. Schwanz’s husband and two sons were present for presentation of her award. Pre-sentation was done by Eden’s current Town Clerk, Mary Jo Hultquist. The staff of Dr. Franklin Meyer’s Dental Office was pres-ent when Dr. Meyer was presented by Paul Zittel, Board Director his award. Dr. Meyer and his office have been in operation since the early 1990’s. Their office has been lovingly renovated from a post office to a thriving dental office. Mr. Zittel made special mention of the efforts the Meyer family has made in preserving 90 acres for farm-land preservation to benefit Eden’s agriculture. Dr. and Mrs. Meyer have been integral in striving for the betterment of our community in so many capacities.

IMMACULATA ART STUDENTS TAKE TOP THREE SPOTS IN ART CONTEST

For the second year in a row, art students from Immacu-lata Academy participated in WNY United’s Drug Free New Year Art & Poetry Contest and had students place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in their age division for art. Sophomores Yaxin (May) Ren (1st) and Mulin Chen (2nd) took the top two spots and senior Justine Chiavetta placed third. Over 500 entries of artwork and poetry were submitted for the contest from 15 schools and community organiza-tions and art teacher, Veronica Benes, couldn’t be more thrilled for her students, “I am so proud of our girls’ enthu-siasm and talent to create the winning posters for this very important drug free event.” The students all attended the WNY United Press Con-ference at the Hamburg Fairgrounds on December 6, where they received their awards, with Erie County Sher-iff Timothy Howard in attendance. Their artwork, along with all of the other entries, are currently on display at the Fairgrounds Festival of Lights.
