The Release of the DovesA holiday remembrance for those who have lost a loved one.

The Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home continues a yearly holiday tradition of respect and remembrance with the release of white doves from a basket at the funeral home located on the corner of Camp Road and Route 5 in Hamburg, at 1 PM on Sunday, November 24, 2013.

Individual family representatives wishing to take part in this community event to remember their loved ones will be allowed to release biodegradable balloons in their memory.

There will also be a special gift for all adult participants who attend the event. The Hospice Foundation will give a presentation. Music will be performed by “Heart to Heart” and Corey Gallagher. Hot chocolate, coffee and cookies will be provided.

Dear Friends of Mackenzie Walsh, We are writing today seeking help for a family that is encountering mounting medical bills. On Nov. 20, 2012, Mackenzie Walsh arrived in this world 13 weeks early. Just 12 inches long and weighing 1 lb. 4 oz., she spent six months in the NICU. Of that, 60 days was spent on a ventilator, which has lead to chronic lung disease. Today she is on oxygen full time. Mackenzie was also born with bilateral congenital glaucoma, a very rare birth defect. She had four surgeries while in the NICU; three eye surgeries and an inguinal hernia surgery. She does not have vision in her left eye. Her right eye has remained stable due to the eye drop medication she is on three times a day. She needs two more eye surgeries soon, only to be followed by a lifetime of more. On Nov. 23, just days after her first birthday, friends and family will host a benefit at the American Legion Post 880 (2912 Legion Drive, Eden, behind Tim Horton’s) from 4-10 p.m. The benefit will include a Chinese auction, raffles and more. Tickets are $25 per person, children 10 and under are free. Your ticket includes music, draft beer, pop and food from 6-8 p.m. We are also seeking donations to help raise money for Mackenzie and her family. Gift certificates/cards and gift baskets for the Chinese auction or a monetary dona-tion are welcome. All donations, big and small are greatly accepted and can be mailed or dropped off to 94 North Lane, Angola or can be picked up by calling Josh at 549-0060 or Kim at 392-8072. We continue to work hard to help our community. We raise money year round to donate to local organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club, Camp Pioneer, our local fire departments and assisting local veterans just to name a few. SS. PETER & PAUL SCHOOL HAD A SUCCESSFUL RED RIBBON WEEK

SS. Peter and Paul Catholic School, located in the Vil-lage of Hamburg, recently concluded Red Ribbon Week. The week began with students taking an oath to remain drug free. The week featured many fun festivities, which included visits from various law enforcement agencies. Students learned about each responsibility the local po-lice, DEA, CIA and FBI have. The school also received a visit from the Erie County Sheriff, where students learned how the agency uses the helicopter for search and rescue missions. GILBERT D. “BUTCH” BROCKMAN

Gilbert D. “Butch” Brockman, age, 71, died unexpectedly on Sunday, November 03, 2013. He was born in Eden, New York on January 29, 1942. The son of late Gilbert F. and Bernice (Bragg) Brockman. He married his loving wife Sharon A. (nee: Ro-mano) on July 20, 1963 in Immaculate Conception Church, Eden. He will be remembered as an avid hunter and fish-erman. He enjoyed the great outdoors. He had a special love for his garden. Growing many vegetables, but was known for his to-matoes and his peppers. Butch enjoyed playing sports, especially foot-ball and baseball. At one time he played semi pro baseball. He followed the Buffalo Bills, the Buffalo Sabers, and the Cincinnati Reds. He had three special companions; three dogs-Edie, Ace and Annabelle.His favorite color was green. From the color of his home to the cloths he enjoyed wearing; all had to be green. He worked as a mason with the Brockman Broth-er’s and retired from the West Seneca Developmen-tal Center. Butch was the devoted husband of Sharon A. (nee: Romano); the loving father of Brenda A. Atkin-son and brother of Donald (late Marlene), late Gordon (Margaret), Clifford (Bar-bara) and Timothy Brock-man, Sr. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. IMMACULATA STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF DONATE TO LOCKS OF LOVE

593” of hair was collected as students, faculty and staff at Immaculata Academy joined together to donate 10 inches or more of their hair to Locks of Love on October 17th. The non-profit organization collects hair donations to create and provide hairpieces for young people with medical hair loss. Character Club, a campus group associated with The Character Club of Western New York, sponsored the event. Hamburg hair stylists Laura Carestio from Design Salon and Spa, Jennifer Mottola and Alesia Crawford from Donovan & Co., and Jill Green from Jill’s New Be-ginning Hair set-up shop in the Academy lobby, where the girls donated their hair as their supportive peers encour-aged them. There was so much encouragement going on in fact, that in the end 26 students, 1 faculty, and 1 staff member ended up getting cuts, with only 16 students orig-inally signed up. A male teacher also collected donations as he had his entire head shaved. To complete the event, the school body gathered in the auditorium for a donation ceremony, where before pictures were shown and new hairdo reveals were made. Junior Ally Dybala made and sold bracelets to help raise money towards the cause and students, faculty, and staff donated $1 to dress down and wear pink or purple (cancer awareness colors). In the end over $400 was raised along with the hair donations, which goes toward defraying the cost of producing the hairpieces. “It’s such a warm feeling to see everyone come together and participate in so many different ways to help others. It’s on days like these that we know our Franciscan mis-sion is alive and well in the halls of Immaculata Acad-emy,” commented Principal Jill Monaco. SCS VISITS SOUTH POINTE This year for Halloween, Southtowns Catholic School students in Miss Lori McIntyre's Grade 3 class did some-thing a little different. They were invited to Trick or Treat at South Pointe Senior Apartments in Hamburg. The stu-dents went trick or treating throughout the building and when they were finished, they met the residents in the community room where the kids read Halloween books. SCS had a special visitor on Oct. 22nd. Mrs. Sharen Trembath came in and spoke in Miss Erica Aikin's grades 5 & 6 Science classes. Mrs. Trembath is the Coordina-tor for the Great Lakes Beach Sweep. She came in and spoke about water pollution / debri and how it finds it's way into our drinking water. The kids were asked the dif-ference between organic and non-organic trash. She had brochures, books and they watched a short video on the plastic islands in our oceans. Mrs. Trembath's visit also fell on Pajama Day. Ingredients:Cookie:nostick cooking spray 1 cup (or 1 stick) butter flavor all‑vegetable shortening 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 40 to 45 chocolatecovered miniature peanut butter cup Glaze:1 teaspoon butter flavor all‑vegetable shortening 1 cup (6 oz. pkg.) semisweet chocolate chips 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter

Preparation Directions:Heat oven to 375ºF. Coat baking sheets lightly with nostick cooking spray. Combine shortening, brown sugar, granulated sugar and peanut butter in bowl with electric mixer; beat at medium speed until well blended. Beat in egg and vanilla. Combine flour, baking soda and salt in medium bowl. Mix into shortening mixture at low speed until just blended. Form rounded spoonfuls of dough around each peanut butter cup. Enclose entirely. Place 2 inches apart on baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until cookies are browned. Remove immediately to cooling rack. Combine shortening, chocolate chips and peanut butter in microwavesafe measuring cup. Microwave 1 minute, stir, and repeat until smooth. Dip cookie tops in chocolate and let stand until chocolate is set.

Holiday Pinecone Ideas

Hang a mixed‑cone garland under a fireplace mantel or around a doorway. Connect different types of pinecones with thin wire and a drill.

Enhance gifts with pinecones, cinnamon sticks and winterberries. Wire them together with velvet ribbon and a gift tag.

Spray paint a dozen small pinecones gold or silver. Leave them plain or decorate them any way you like with glitter or beads. Tie them to ribbons of varying lengths and hang them from lights or chandeliers. You can also give them as a gift in an egg carton.

Create custom pinecone place cards for your guests. Tie a ribbon, bell and name tag to a plain or painted pinecone and set at the table.

Spread peanut butter over large pinecones and roll them in birdseed. Hang them outdoors on a tree with a ribbon for the birds to enjoy.

Salt Dough Ornaments

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Mix 4 cups flour, 1cup salt, 1 ½ cups warm water until soft dough forms. Roll out dough on parchment paper about 1/8 inch thick. Cut out shapes with your favorite cookie cutters and make a hole in the dough with a straw so you will be able to hang the ornament. Move ornaments onto a cookie sheet and bake until hard, about 1 hour. Decorate with paint and glitter then spray with a varnish to preserve.

This was our retirement home. Now it will lay empty. Our home is not livable due to a sew-er problem caused by an inept contractor hired by the village government to do a water line installation on Vermont St. This contractor cut our sewer lateral leading to the main sewer line. The contractor refuses to repair his shotty work, and the village government stands with him and against us. When will the Mayor stand up to the plate and rectify this matter? We need resolution now!!
