Data sheets on instrumentation modules Data sheets on four series of the Brandenburg NIM range of nuclear instrumentation modules are now available. The modules featured are the Nl O/l 1 positive and negative high-voltage power supplies, the N20 range of charge sensitive amplifiers, the N30 pulse-height analysers, and the N40 ratemeters.

Applications of the NIM range include spectrometry, multi-channel uptake measurements and organ scanning in bio-medical laboratories, chromatography, and automatic sample counting.

Conferences and group activities 5th Congress on Vacuum Science and Technology The 5th Congress on Vacuum Science and Technology, organized by Associazione ltaliana del Vuoto, will be held in Perugia, Dipartimento di Chimica dell’ UniversitB, Via Elce di Sotto, from 29 September to 2 October 1975.

The organizers of the congress propose, as on previous occasions, to offer industrial experts and university and general research workers an opportunity for exchanging ideas and experiences on topics and problems of common interest. As usual, the congress subjects will mainly concern vacuum production and measurement. Nevertheless, ample time will be reserved for the following themes, connected to fields where application and development of vacuum technology are determinant: Space problems; Thin films; Solid surfaces; Molecular beams; Chemistry and biochemistry; and Other applications of fundamental character.

International Conference on The Applications of Ion Beams to Materials The above conference is being organized by the Atomic Collisions in Solids Group of The Institute of Physics with the help of an international advisory committee. It will be held at the University of Warwick on 8-l 2 September 1975.

The conference will be concerned with the applications of ion beams to materials. It should be noted that a conference on Atomic Collisions Processes in Solids is being held very soon after the present meeting in Amsterdam and the philosophy and content of both meetings will be closely co-ordinated. The particular subjects of interest at this conference will be:

Physical and chemical effects of ion implantation in metals, semiconductors and other materials, including ion plating processes but excluding applications to specific semiconductor device production. Defect production and agglomeration, implant precipitation and migration in ion bombarded solids. Surface topographic effects. Novel applications of ion beam probes for surface and sub-surface analysis of solids. Significant developments in ion beam technology.

Offers of contributions are invited in the form of 200 word abstracts to be sent by 1 June 1975 to Professor G Carter,

Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Salford, Salford M5 4WT.

It is intended to publish the proceedings of the conference and authors of accepted papers will be asked to submit their papers in full. Details of the form in which the full papers are to be submitted will be sent to the authors.

There will be an exhibition of equipment and products relevant to the conference.

A Second News Release will be issued in Janaury 1975 giving further information.

The Institute of Physics, Vacuum Group Report of the Committee 1974/75 This year, as will be explained below, the decision was taken to hold the Annual General Meeting in February, so that this report had to be written before the session was half completed. Nevertheless, there are a number of relevant points to make.

It should first be reported that the session 1973/74 ended successfully with the Annual Conference and Annual Address in April and the summer visit in July. The Conference was held jointly with ‘The Atomic Collisions in Solids’ Group; the subject chosen being ‘Low Energy Ion-Surface Interactions’. It was held in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at The University of Liverpool, from 17 to 19 April 1974. All accounts suggest that the 70 delegates found it to be informative and enjoyable. The organization of this meeting was unusual in that it was held in parallel with another conference organized by the Institute. The second conference, on the subject of ‘Negative Ions’, was organized by The Atomic and Molecular Physics Sub-Committee. Delegates attending both conferences expressed their approval of the principle of parallel meetings; they were particularly appreciative of the possibility of attending sessions from either conference and also for the opportunities offered for meeting many colleagues. Many of the papers presented at these two conferences appeared in two special issues of Vacuum (Vol24, No 10 and Vol24, No II/l 2). In 1974 we continued our custom of organizing the Annual Address to coincide with the Annual Conference and this year it was given by Dr P A Chatterton, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at the University of Liverpool who spoke to the Group on the subject ‘Vacuum Breakdown’.
