Freshwater Biome

Freshwater biomes are everywhere; rivers, ponds, lakes, streams, and creeks! You can find a large variety of plants and animals in

freshwater!

Plants in a freshwater Biome

• Swamp Milkweed is a fairly common plant that is found in nearly all counties of Illinois

• Swamp Milkweeds are usually found in shaded areas in floodplain forests, thickets, moist black soil prairies, marshes, swamps, bogs, seeps, and areas along rivers, lakes, or drainage ditches.

Water lilies

The water lily, “queen of the water,” is found in shallow ponds, in slow-moving streams, and on the borders of lakes where the soil is rich. It belongs to

the freshwater-plant family Nymphaeaceae. Most species have rounded, floating, waxy-coated leaves

on long stalks that contain many air spaces. The stalks arise from thick, fleshy, creeping underwater

stems that are buried in the mud. The showy, solitary flowers are born at or above the surface on

long stalks that are attached to the underground stems.

There is an otter on its back and it is eating a crab, and there are two

otters laying on their backs relaxing.

• ThePink Dolphin, and Boto, its Brazilian name, this creature is the largest, most common most widely distributed river dolphin in the world.

• The Pink Dolphin was one of the least threatened species of dolphins 20 years ago, but now become one of the most endangered species

• There is a species that looks like a jellyfish, reproduces like a jellyfish and is known under the common name freshwater jellyfish: Craspedacusta sowerbyi. This species is distinguished from true jellyfish by a structure called a velum that freshwater jellyfish has and marine jellyfish lacks. However, most people still look at Craspedacusta sowerbyi as a jellyfish.

• A Hippopotamus is a large, mostly plant-eating mammal found in rivers and lakes throughout Africa.  It is semi aquatic and thought to be more closely related to whales than to other hoofed animals.

Human Impact

• Each year, more than 100 oil tankers offload oil in Portland, Maine. If a ship leaked or spilled while unloading or while navigating through the harbor, oil would wash up, become trapped, and coat everything on the shores of Casco Bay-shoreline, plants, and birds.

• Because of the purity of the water, the absence of the harsh salt, and the adaptability of the water, a broad spectrum of plant and animal life can be found in these areas.  Because this biome is all over the world, there is no average anything. 

• The freshwater biome contains the second most diverse group of plants and animals.

• Although it is not the largest, this biome is the most spread out over the world.
