The Abbasid Empire Awatif, Komal, Nick, Allison •The Abbasids moved capital of Arab empire to Baghdad •They had a huge Persian cultural influence, evident in social life •The year 750 is when the abbasid caliphate came under the rule around Arabia and Northern Africa •Abbasids caliphate were the 3rd islamic caliphate to come after Prophet Muhammad. This dynasty had come from Muhammad's youngest uncle. Decline of the Abbasid Caliphate : •revolts in persia and north africa •persia setup their own kingdom •military fell apart •riots •caliphs became the problem •government starting to fall apart •authority of the caliph went away •tax farms to military commanders and governors Economic ( change and continuity) •the abbasid caliphate was pretty well off and has a lot of money due to the facts that they had a lot of trade with other countries allowing diversity and letting different goods from everywhere causing a good amount of money into the caliphate Trade ( change and continuity) -close contact with the three continents china, western europe, and from Russia to central africa -there was no tax for the outsiders so more people came and carried on with trade (craftsmen and merchants) -there were Bazaars in baghdad, with good from all over the worlds -Spices, minerals, and dyes = India -gems and fabrics = Central Ssia -honey and wax =Scandinavia & Russia -Ivory and gold dust =Africa -Silks, musk's, porcelain =china -muslim textiles turned out very well (cotton and silk) -Damascus/ Toledo = steel -Cordova= leather -Syria= glass -Learned paper making from the chinese -Large crops of fruits and grains = Iran -Olives=North Africa -wine= Spain -Wood= Asia -horses= Persia -cotton = Nile valley – Technology •camel caravans • Dhows • compass • Astronomy •Arabic alphabet/ numerals •astrolabe navigation •improving water distribution •advances in medicine •agriculture and livestock breeding • paper •Culture ( change and continuity) -followed religion of Islam -The culture distinguishing factor from the Umayyads and the Abbasids was that the -Abbasids followed more persian cultures -Sunni orthodoxy -Women’s freedom and influence of women declined. society was very highly patriarchal. -Women became veiled and there was a large demand for concubines and female slaves.
