Prim-Ed Publishing® www.prim-ed.com i  Classroom art and craft – a year of activities

Foreword

Classroom art and craft – a year of activities is a hugely useful resource that provides fun and easy art

and craft projects to capture pupil’s interest and foster excitement and creativity for the entire school

year.

 The simple, low-preparation activities can be used to introduce a new topic; complete a lesson plan;

inspire writing; or for learning centres or early nishers. The activities may also be used to reinforce or

conclude themes or celebrate special days, events or times of the year.

Make a sample •

Make a sample of each craft piece before you introduce it to the class. This will giveyou a good idea of how to prepare for each activity and how much assistance the

pupils will need to complete each. Having a sample ready also allows for valuable

discussion time, brainstorming ideas, and visualizing the end result. The quality of

pupils’ work will be much higher when they have a visual aid to use as a reference for

the steps of the process.

Odds and ends  • Though Classroom art and craft–a year of activities contains a variety of craft types,

there are materials that are common to many of the activities. Gather these itemsahead of time so they always are always available. For the items that you do not

have, send a copy of the Wish list on Page iii home with the pupils. Parents may wish

to contribute these items so you don’t have to purchase them.

General supplies  • Most classrooms already have the basic supplies of scissors, glue and tape. Since these

supplies are usually readily available, they have been omitted from the materials list

for each activity.

Teacher preparation  • Many of the activity directions ask to copy worksheets directly onto coloured paper.

Alternatively, copy the worksheet onto cardboard, cut it out and use as a template to

trace onto the paper. A parent volunteer or an older child may assist with this.

Classroom art and craft – a year of activities iv Prim-Ed Publishing® www.prim-ed.com

Dear Parents:

Throughout the school year, your children will be completing many different art andcraft projects. In addition to making the regular school week fun, art and craft activities

capture children’s interest and help them remember what they have learned.

As you can imagine, however, supplies can be expensive, so I’m asking for your help!

If you can donate any of the following items to our classroom art and craft supplies, it

would be greatly appreciated:

large coloured paper squares

drawing paper

styrofoam sheets

decorative paper such as wallpaper and wrapping paper

brown paper lunch bags

glitter

glitter glue

sequins

stickers

ribbon

rickrack (braid)

googly eyes

pompoms

wool

pipe-cleaners

buttons

large craft sticks (tongue depressors)

paintbrushes

crayons

markers

split pins

Book ormat  The format of the art and craft projects in this book all follow one of two patterns:

1. A single-page format consists of a teacher page which

includes:

(a) the title of the project

(b) a list of materials required to complete

the project

(c) complete instructions

(d) an artist’s representation of the

completed art and craft project.

2. A two-page format consists of

a teacher page and a variety of

accompanying resource sheets.

The teachers page for the two-

page format contains the same

information as the single-page

format:

(a) the title of the project

(b) a list of materials required

to complete the project

(c) complete instructions

(d) an artist’s representation

of the completed art andcraft project.

The teacher resource sheet is a copymaster

for the teacher to photocopy and use as a

template or for the pupils to use as the base

for their art and craft project. Often this page

is used for both purposes.

Aquiltofmanycolours

1. Use a marker to write Colour us beautiful on the white

cardboard strip to create a title. Punch four holes in the

top and bottom of each 18cm square.

2. Give each pupil a white square and a coloured square.

Ask pupils to use crayons, markers or oil pastels to

4. Ask pupils to bring their squares to any part of the

room where there is lots of oor space.

other on the oor so that the shape forms a rectangle

or square. You may need to allow spaces for solid

squares with no pictures to make your 'quilt' even.

6. Demonstrate how to use wool to weave the squares

together. Start each row by tying the left squares

together and leaving a very long end for the pupils to

work with. Emphasise the 'over under' pattern they will

make with the wool. ('Row 1' pupils will weave Rows 1

and 2 together; 'Row 2' pupils will weave Rows 2 and3 together, and so on.) Add a border of solid squares

to the bottom of the quilt if necessary so the pupils

whose portraits are in the last row get to weave, too.

7. Help the pupils to tie the wool at the end of each row.

• black tempera paint

• paintbrushes

1. Ask the pupils to trace their hand six times on red or

Tissue paper tears easily so care must be taken.

2. Ask the pupils to use a pencil to

draw a light circle in the middle of

3. Tell them to lay down their 'petals'

(overlapping them) to create a

ower shape around the circle they

4. Ask the pupils to paint

starch on the petals, one at

a time, brushing from the

bottom to the top of the

petal for best results. This

must be done very carefully.

5. When the starch is almost dry, the pupils drop black

paint in the centre of their circle. If the black paint is

too transparent when it is dry, ask the pupils to add

another layer.6. When the paint is completely dry, have pupils add

drops of glue in the black area and drop popcorn

kernels or yellow cake sprinkles on it.

* Liquid starch can be made using

the following method:

In a large heatproof bowl, stir ½cup cornour into 1 cup of cold

water. Add 24 cups of boiling

water and allow to cool (8 cups

of boiling water will make a thick

solution; 16 cups will make a

medium solution; the quantity

given will make a light solution).

* Powdered starch is available

from some large hardware stores.
