W e’re all familiar with the trap
the Herodians and the Pharisees set for Jesus, asking whether it was right for a Jew to pay allegiance to Caesar. Jesus must have been making a strong impact because this alli-ance between Herodians
a n d P h a r i -s e e s w a s such an unl ike ly one. The He rod i -ans had crossed
over to the Romans where-as the Pharisees epito-mised the Jewish Law. In fact, they hated each other.
We all know Jesus’ answer: give both God and Caesar what they’re due. And at first we can think of it as a smart reply. But upon re-flection we come to realise that it might have got him out of a sticky situation but it’s not really any answer at all.
We live side by side with two kingdoms: the kingdom of secular government and the kingdom of God. And week by week, month by month, we come up against the rub. We find ourselves faced with circumstances where one conflicts with the other. So we recognise the State’s right to levy taxes but we might have prob-lems with the sort of medi-cal or social services they provide with the money they raise. We recognise our right to defend our-selves but we might have trouble with wars and cam-paigns that our govern-ments lead us into.
Christians have a smart reply to the problem, but it too only raises more ques-tions. They say that there is nothing that does not be-long to God, so God must come first in all things. This is true on one level but it does not take away our need to use our own con-sciences when making our decisions, and it means that we have to be quite clear about the influences
that are shaping our con-sciences. We are called to think about what belongs to God and to let it influence the way we live. When earthly authority is opposed to what we believe is God’s authority how do we react? Conscience is both a bless-ing and a curse because we cannot blindly follow
rules and regulations; we have to inform our con-sciences and act in accord-ance with what we believe to be God’s will for humani-ty.
Today’s reading is a classic example of how the gospel does not provide us with pat answers. The good news is good news but it’s also a challenge to us to be just as adult about the things of God as we have become about the things of Caesar. And vice versa.
NO EASY ANSWERS FAITH IN FOCUS:
After considering your family and friends in
your will, why not think of leaving a gift to the
family of the Church? It is a way of thanking
God for the blessings you have received
during your life and a wonderful way of help-
ing to ensure that the faith and values we
cherish will be carried on for future genera-
tions- your children, grandchildren and be-
yond.
Your gift could be specified to be used for
general purposes at the discretion of the
parish priest ( or the bishop if it is given to
the diocese).
Making the ultimate gift will be as simple as
asking your advisor to include a statement
such as ..
'I GIVE [THE SUM OF £ — / MY RESIDU-
ARY ESTATE] to St. David's Catholic
Church, Mold (or if you would like to give to
the diocese: to Wrexham Diocesan Trustees
Registered) to be applied as to both capi-
tal and income for the general charitable
purposes of the Parish ( or Wrexham
Diocesan Trust (Charity Number 700426)
AND I REQUEST without imposing any
binding trust or legal obligation that the
same shall be used for such purposes with-
in St. David’s, Mold or at the discretion of
the parish priest AND I DIRECT that the re-
ceipt of the Parish Priest shall be sufficient
discharge to my Executors.

World Mission Sunday
Collection at the door
to support Missio
Today is “World Mission Sunday”:
Today the Holy Father invites all Catho-lics to contribute to a special collection for Missio, his official charity for overseas mission. Your prayers and donations today will support the work of missionaries and young churches as they share faith, build churches and provide healthcare and education, often in difficult and danger-ous circumstances overseas.
The World Mission Sunday collection will go in its entirety to support mission pro-jects worldwide that bring God’s love and message of dignity for all. Please give what you can. Every gift makes a real difference to people living in poverty who are yearning to hear the Good News of God’s love for them..
