26th SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME YR C 29th SEPTEMBER 2019

In the care of the Augustinians

Dear Friends,

Each year, the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference issues a Social Justice Statement that addresses in depth a matter of concern that affects the lives of all of us. This year’s Statement - ‘Making it Real’ - is concerned with the impact of

modern communications technology on our lives. In the street, on public transport, in shopping centres and school grounds, it is not uncommon to see the majority of people with phone in hand communicating in various ways, even risking their safety.

Social media has revolutionised human contact by helping people stay in touch more readily but also changed the pattern of learning, transport, business, banking and shopping. Schools face challenges where social media becomes a personal necessity for contact between children and parents, particularly in emergencies.

It is estimated that over 20 million Australians are on the internet and 18 million use social media. While definitely not a ‘digital native’ myself, I occasionally discover my real dependency on social media when it fails, as happened recently with our Province server. In the present age, we expect more of one another in terms of communication and prompt response. The words, ‘I sent you an email!’ often express frustration rather than good wishes!

Given the Gospel’s clear message about our call to love one another, the potential of social media

and the internet in strengthening friendships and family bonds is immense, yet sometimes the urgency

of communication and lack of true personal contact fosters superficiality and shallowness and can weaken family life.

Introducing the 2019–2020 Statement, ACBC President Archbishop Mark Coleridge affirms the many positives but reminds us too of some serious challenges when: “….the dignity of vulnerable people is harmed by online bullying and exploitation. The common good is compromised where certain groups are excluded from the benefits of technology. People’s privacy has been undermined when personal data has been appropriated for financial gain. The solidarity of entire communities can be placed at risk by campaigns of misinformation and the spread of ‘fake news’.”

He describes to us how Pope Francis is calling us to ‘boldly become citizens of the digital world’ and to ensure it is a place of genuine human encounter where we all have a role in making this new digital world one where hatred and divisions are rejected and our love of God and neighbour is fostered always.

Our digital world promises genuine human encounter but we need to avoid a passive approach lest we and those around us be harmed by information overload, social isolation, marginalisation of the vulnerable, consumerism and fake news. Responsible use of social media promises love, understanding, beauty, goodness, truth and trustworthiness, joy and hope.

Some hard copies of the Statement are available in our churches or you can order a copy at the Parish Office. Alternatively, you can visit the web – Social Justice Statement 2019-2020.

PLENARY COUNCIL 2020 – Listening and Discernment Preparation for the Plenary Council 2020 is continuing and the next phase of consultation is about to begin. Based on the submissions from groups and individuals across Australia, including the Catholic Community of North Harbour, organisers have published 6 themes that will be the focus of the second phase of consultation through a process of Communal discernment. Themes are as follows: How is God calling us to be a Christ-centred Church that is:

Missionary and Evangelizing; Inclusive, Participatory and Synodal; Prayerful and Eucharistic; Humble, Healing and Merciful; A joyful, Hope-filled and Servant Community; Open to Conversion, Renewal and Reform.

Information about these themes will be provided in the Parish bulletin and the Parish Pastoral Council will consider how the Parish can participate in the process at the next PPC Meeting on 8 October.

2019-2020 Social Justice Statement

In this year’s Statement, the Bishops reassert Pope Francis’ call to

‘boldly become citizens of the digital world’, with the image of the

Good Samaritan as our inspiration. The statement affirms the

positive possibilities for encounter and solidarity offered by new

digital media, while warning of those elements online that can be

harmful. Information overload, social isolation, marginalisation of

the vulnerable, consumerism and fake news are just some of the

challenges. As individual users and as people and communities of

faith, we are called not just to be inhabitants of this new digital

world, but to be active citizens shaping it for the good of all.

Justice Council website www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au or call (02) 8306 3499

Prayer for Our Digital World Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Help us to recognise the evil latent in a communication that does not build communion. Help us to remove the venom from our judgements. Help us to speak about others as our brothers and sisters. You are faithful and trustworthy; may our words be seeds of goodness for the world: where there is shouting, let us practise listening; where there is confusion, let us inspire harmony; where there is ambiguity, let us bring clarity; where there is exclusion, let us offer solidarity; where there is sensationalism, let us use sobriety; where there is superficiality, let us raise real questions; where there is prejudice, let us awaken trust; where there is hostility, let us bring respect; where there is falsehood, let us bring truth. Amen. - A Prayer from Pope Francis, 2018 Message for the 52nd World Communications Day

St Augustine On Dives and Lazarus

"God made both the rich and the poor. So the rich and the poor are born alike. You meet one another as you walk on the way together. Do not oppress or defraud anyone. One may be needy and another may have plenty. But the Lord is the maker of them both. Through the person who has, He helps the one who needs - and through the person who does not have, He tests the one who has."
