Last Sunday we heard Jesus lament the particular challenges those with many possessions face in order to enter the Kingdom of God. Jesus then predicts his passion to the Twelve, who are overwhelmed by fear. In this part of Mark’s Gospel, Jesus’ words to his closest disciples seem to be intended to prepare them for the events that will occur in Jerusalem, which is his suffering and death, as he went further to explain to them the importance of service and sacrifice in the life of a true disciple. In particular, he seems to be preparing the Twelve for their leadership roles in the emerging Christian community. But in contrast, James and John seemed to have gotten it wrong, as they ask to be given seats of honour when Jesus enters into his glory. They have not grasped anything of what Jesus has been saying: that the path to any glory leads through suffering and death. Once again, the disciples seem to be selective in what they hear Jesus say. Unsurprisingly, therefore, this request by James and John draws feelings of indignation from the rest of the group, and Jesus seizes the moment to give them a lesson on leadership and ambition. “Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all” (Mark 10:45). The model of the world is that of leaders at the top and the rest at the bottom, but that is not to be the case among the followers of Christ. “For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). Christian leaders must be servants of all. Church leadership must follow the model of Christ who by love and humility made himself the least and the servant of all (Cf. CCC 1551). Those in authority must not “lord” it over the people, like the pagans do. The rich and wealthy must never oppress or take advantage of the lowly and poor. Finally, dear brothers and sisters, let us examine our consciences and learn from Jesus’ sacrificial love which knows no race, culture, language or even political affiliation, but continues to be countercultural in our time. Like the followers of Jesus who truly understand his teaching, let us use this opportunity to examine our own exercise of authority and always remember to model it after Jesus Christ the servant-king who came to serve and not to be served. Peace be with you! Fr Lucius Edomobi

Jesus the servant-king On this 29th Sunday in ordinary time, we continue to read from the section of Mark’s Gospel that chronicles Jesus’ triumphant entry to Jerusalem. To consider these questions groups are being formed in the Parishes. At Our Lady of Dolours we are starting discussions after 8.00am Mass today on Sunday 21 October. A similar one hour session will be held twice next Sunday at St William’s in the Daley Centre – October 28.

Adult Faith Education

What are the Ethics of Advanced Care Planning? – an issue which at some point in our lives could affect us all – either individually or perhaps our parents who

currently may be approaching the later stages of life.

This will be the topic of Dr. David Kirchhoffer, Director of the Queensland Bioethics

Centre in the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy at ACU, who will speak in the Daley Centre, at Grovely, this coming Wednesday, October 24 from 7.30 pm to 9 pm. This is an opportunity not to be missed.

This week marks Pope Francis’ declared second World Day of the Poor. ‘Poverty entails more than the lack of income and productive resources to ensure sustainable livelihoods. Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion as well as the lack of participation in decision-making.’ https://w2.vatican.va The numbers of people existing in poverty are sadly increasing; 17.4% of Australian children live below the poverty line. Australians most likely to be living in poverty are below 15 or over 65. It’s timely to recall how the earliest Christian communities faced poverty : They sold their possessions and goods and distributed them to all, as any had need” (Acts 2:45). It is clear that the absence of poverty was a priority for the early Christians. Incarnate God, you taught us to speak out for what is right. Make us strive for a world that is transformed into the shape of love, where poverty shall be no more. Amen Christmas Day Preparations…can you help? We are calling for volunteers, with a little or a lot of time leading up to, on Christmas Eve or on Christmas Day, to assist with plans for the '2nd St William's Merry Little Christmas'. Perhaps you can spare only a few hours or would like to help with baking or donations prior to the day instead? Christmas is a wonderful chance to give thanks though generosity and we would love your help! Email [email protected] for more information.

Our parish will conduct the annual Catholic Mission Church Appeal

‘How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces

peace, who brings good news…’ Isaiah 52:7

Next weekend our parish will be holding the annual Catholic Mission Church Appeal. This year we are invited to help to heal a nation through education in Myanmar. Led by Cardinal Charles Maung Bo, the Church is developing an alternative system of quality education, with comprehensive teacher training programs and the establishment of new schools, especially in remote areas. It has been called an “education revolution”, and the potential impact is far-reaching. Please come prepared next weekend and give generously to this important work. You will have an opportunity to become an integral part of this inspiring work by joining as a monthly giving partner. This regular contribution will directly support education in Myanmar.

First Rite of Reconciliation will be celebrated on the 1st December at St. William’s Church at 9:30 am. Please contact the Parish Office and have a chat with Marie-Louise Singson for information. A friend was in front of me coming out of church one day, and the priest was standing at the

door, as he always was, to shake hands with the worshippers. He grabbed my friend by the hand and pulled him aside. The priest said to him, 'You need to join the army of the Lord.' My friend replied, 'I'm already in the army of the Lord, Father.' So the priest enquired, 'Then how come I don't see you except at Christmas and at Easter?' My friend whispered back, 'I'm in the secret service.'

A VOCATION VIEW: Life's rewards are tied up in the spirit of service. Just as the Son of Man came to give His life, so too are we then called through our profession of faith to serve others. Lord, we pray, 'let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in You to do your will.'

If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from “I want more” to “thank you God for everything you have given me, I have enough to share”. This change in perspective will bring you joy through service to others.
