Air Arabia Posts Record Nine-Month Results

GTA Partners with Outrigger Enterprises Group

Air Arabia announced its financial results for the first nine months of the year, ending September 30, as the success of the company’s hub and network expansion strategy continued to be reflected in strong performance figures.

GTA, a travel distributor, has launched its enhanced distribution agreement with 10 properties in Australia, Fiji, Mauritius and Thailand from Outrigger Enter-prises Group.

T he carrier’s net profit for the first nine months of the year stood at AED498 million (USD135 million), up 46 per-cent compared to the corresponding period of 2013, while its turnover of

AED2.8 billion (USD762 million) showed an in-crease of 17 percent year-on-year.

The low-cost airline served over 5.1 million passengers during the period under review and the average seat load factor for the same period stood at an impressive 82 percent.

E ssentially, the agreement enables greater choice for businesses selling accommo-dation and travel, while bringing more of the world’s travellers to stay at Outrigger properties.

Martin Jones, senior vice president, global sourcing and commercial management, GTA, noted, “This partnership will give travel-selling businesses an even greater choice of accommoda-tion and extend the variety of rate options we offer their clients.”

Aviation to Contribute USD53.1 Billion to Dubai’s Economy

Emirates, Dubai Airports and the aviation sector as a whole contributed USD26.7 billion to the Dubai economy in 2013, which was almost 27 percent of

Dubai’s GDP and supported a total of 416,500 jobs, ac-counting for 21 percent of the emirate’ s total employment.

These figures were based on the latest report Quantify-ing the Economic Impact of Aviation in Dubai, conducted by Oxford Economics as a follow-up to its 2011 study.

The report reaffirms aviation’s growing significance as a major engine of economic development and its far-reaching contributions to other industries as a catalyst for a spectrum of economic activity.

B usiness opportunities in Iraq’s USD50 billion aviation infrastruc-ture projects will be highlighted during Iraq Airports Show, host-ed by Sulaymaniyah International Airport from December 3 – 4.

The fourth annual Iraq Airports Conference and Exhibition will focus on the progress of Iraq’s ongoing airport projects, as well as best practices in air traffic control and management, safety and security, operations and ground handling. “Air transport infrastructure in the country has crumbled after years of underfunding, but the Iraqi government has a clear vision to rebuild the aviation sector by injecting cash into redevelopment efforts and regaining international investor confidence,” said Ram Muthaiah, gen-eral manager, Babylon International, organiser of the show.

Etihad Cargo has expanded its fleet of freighter aircraft with the placement of a third Boeing 747 aircraft from Atlas

Air Worldwide Holdings, as part of a multi-year aircraft, crew, maintenance and insur-ance (ACMI) agreement.

The 747-400 freighter complements ex-isting lease agreements previously signed by Etihad Cargo for Boeing 747 freighter aircraft in May 2012 and May 2013.

James Hogan, president, Etihad Airways, said, “Etihad Cargo continues to play a vital role in the growth and profit of the airline. We reported USD804 million in cargo rev-enue during the first three quarters of the year, and we are on track for this business to be turning over USD1 billion by the end of the year.”

Qatar Airways is to expand its flights to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport from March 29, 2015, as it increases

Emirates Supports Erbil with New Regular Services

SAUDIA to Introduce Book and Pay System

On November 16, Emirates resumed flights to Erbil with two weekly flights, set to increase to four times per week as of December 4.

“We have been closely monitoring the situation in Iraq and af-ter a thorough review of all operational factors we have decided to resume our services, which will help support business and international invest-ment across numerous sectors in Erbil. The resumed service will be of par-ticular benefit to passengers connecting to the GCC and points to the US and Europe,” said Sheikh Majid Al Mualla, divisional senior vice president, commercial operations, Emirates.

S audi Arabian Airlines (SAUDIA) will begin implementing the new Book and Pay system for its domestic flights, effective January 1, 2015, in order to make optimum use of its seat capacity and meet

actual passenger demand. The new scheme aims to eradicate practices such as booking seats

without any need for travel and cancelling them at the last moment, thus preventing actual passengers from using the available seats. It is also set to put an end to the phenomenon of unauthorised agents who offer res-ervation services through the Internet and social media, holding seats and selling them to passengers for better prices which, however, some-times reach the price of the original ticket.

f lynas has conducted admission tests for 95 candidates to join its pilot ca-det programme, Future Pilots. The programme is designed to attract local talents to join the aviation sector, which in turn opens prestigious career

opportunities. Mansour Al Harbi, executive director, flight operations, flynas, said, “At flynas,

we are keen to provide excellent training and employment opportunities for am-bitious young Saudis and the Future Pilots programme will enable us to achieve our Saudisation targets in accordance with the company's vision for Saudi nation-als to contribute to the renaissance of our society and to actively participate in the progress of our beloved Kingdom.”

RENDEZVOUS

Q & A withHamad Bin Mejren

MENA CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN ITS PO-SITION AS A SPORTS HUB, AND DUBAI IS HEIGHTENING ITS OWN STANDING AS HAMAD BIN MEJREN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, BUSI-NESS TOURISM, DUBAI DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM & COMMERCE MARKETING (DTCM), EXPLAINS.

TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: How im-portant is sports tourism in main-taining a sustainable path in the destination’s tourism growth? Which are the emirate’s main target markets in terms of sports travel?

HAMAD BIN MEJREN: Dubai Tour-ism Vision 2020 is to welcome 20 mil-lion visitors a year to Dubai by the year 2020, with three points of focus: events, family and business. In order to achieve these goals and maintain such figures, sustainable growth is incredibly important. Bearing in mind that sports enthusiasts are willing to travel overseas to attend events and support their teams or players, sports tourism and sports events have a big role to play in this strategy. Therefore, it is a key area for us when attracting visitors from around the world.

Sports events put Dubai on the map. The emirate has successfully es-tablished itself as the events hub of the MENA and South Asia supra-re-gion, and is increasingly being recog-nised as a leading global events des-tination. Over the next few months, Dubai will host a huge variety of sports events [...].

TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: The Middle East is rapidly becoming a sports hub with a variety of sporting events being held across the region. How has the authority changed per-ceptions on sports for locals as well as tourists visiting the destination for the various events?

HAMAD BIN MEJREN: Creating and sustaining a visitor economy is cru-cial for economic development. To achieve this, it is imperative that the government and private sectors work together in their approach, some-thing which is already happening in Dubai. Building festivals around these sport events is key in attracting not only more visitors, but an increased length of stay too.

The Dubai World Cup is a key ex-ample of this. With the first race hav-ing taken place in 1981, the event this year was much more than a one-day event with a series of high-profile rac-es taking place throughout January to March.

Regular events are also important when it comes to driving repeat visits from overseas, however they also ca-

ter to the residents of Dubai for whom these events become a regular fixture in their calendars, with many even planning visits from friends and family abroad to coincide with such events. The Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sev-ens is a prime example. Now in its 45th year, it is the largest annual sport-ing event in Dubai and the longest-running international sporting event in the Middle East. [2013’s] event at-tracted over 90,000 people and each year, the event gets bigger with this year’s event featuring a music concert and a whole host of activities to keep visitors of all ages entertained. Events, such as the Al Marmoum Camel Rac-ing Season, also maintain the local and traditional sport of camel racing, while new, one-off events add to the already diverse offering, broadening the emirate’s appeal.

TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: Sports travel can be boosted through a combination of business and incen-tive trips to the destination. How is the authority working towards that end? How popular are such trips in contrast to leisure sports initia-tives?

HAMAD BIN MEJREN: At DTCM, we always say that today’s business trav-ellers are tomorrow’s leisure travellers so we believe it is important to show-case all aspects of the destination on business and incentive trips to entice those travellers to return with friends and family. We work with both pri-vate and public sector to assist with numerous trips each year, working together on itineraries, team building activities and encouraging event at-tendance for groups where relevant. One example is golf.

Dubai is a leading golf destination and is home to some of the world’s top courses where professionals and golf-lovers alike have the opportu-nity to practice their swing, both in the day and on floodlit courses in the evening. Two of the European Tours’ flagship events take place in Dubai every year: the Dubai Desert Classic in January and DP World Tour Cham-pionship in November.

Throughout the year, visitors have the opportunity to play on the host courses, The Majlis at Emirates Golf Club and the Earth Course at Jumei-rah Golf Estate. [...]
