4 TEMECULA VALLEY POLO CLUB

Welcome to the 2nd Annual Season at the Temecula Valley Polo Club! We are thrilled to be inviting back many old friends and fans, and we have an exciting season in store for you.

The Temecula Wine Country is rapidly expanding and growing in prominence and we are excited to be a part of this transformation. We hope that the elegance and pageantry of our sport will continue to elevate the status of the Valley.

It’s my pleasure to personally invite everyone to join us for a fun-filled season of competitive polo matches, breathtaking sunsets and local wine tasting. Our season kicks off on Friday, May 16th and will run through the end of October. Whether you’re seated under our magnificent tent with a glass of champagne or you’re on the sidelines tailgating, our beautiful polo fields are the perfect place to get your weekends started!

I’d like to extend a special thank you to all of our 2014 Sponsors & Advertisers, our patrons and players, the fans and most importantly our Temecula Valley Polo team. We have a wonderful group of staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to continue the tradition of polo at Temecula Downs, and they have put together an amazing season, filled with action-packed polo, social gatherings and charity events. In addition to growing the sport of polo, our mission has always been to provide a venue for local organizations to raise funds for those in need within Riverside County, so I encourage everyone to support our charity events throughout 2014.

On behalf of myself, and everyone at the Temecula Valley Polo Club, I’d like to thank you for your continued support. I am confident this will be another successful year of polo!

With gratitude,

President of The Temecula Valley Polo Club

Polo 101:

The object of the game is to move the ball down field and hit the ball between the goal posts. A goal is worth 1 point and the team with the most goals at the end of the match wins. Matches normally consist of either 4 or 6, 7 ½ minute periods, called a chukker. Players have 4 minutes between each chukker to change horses.

There are four players per team: Number One is an offensive player and often scores the most goals, Number Two is both offensive and defensive and moves the ball up and down the field. Number Three is an offensive position similar to a quarterback and is usually the strongest player on the team, Number Four plays defense and must have a strong backshot. Players come from all over the world, including Argentina, Mexico, France, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and the United States. All players are rated by the United States Polo Association’s Handicap Committee on a scale of -1 to 10, ten being the best in the world.

The rules of polo are complex and designed primarily for the safety of the players and their horses. They also afford players the opportunity to create strategic plays and, in essence, out-smart their opponent. The primary rule is that play follows the line of the ball. Once a ball is hit, the player who is closest to the ball with the narrowest angle has the right of way. Opposing players cannot cross the line too closely to the player who has the right of way, nor can they approach the “on line” player at too sharp an angle, or they risk a foul and subsequent penalty.

Hook: One of the two defensive maneuvers (the other is the ride-off). The mallet is used to block, or interfere with another player’s swing at the ball.

Knock-In: After the ball crosses the back line, the defending team knocks the ball back into play from their own back line.

Near Side: The left side of the polo pony.

Neck shot: Hitting the ball under a horse’s neck.

Line of the Ball: Imaginary line produced by the ball when it is hit or deflected.

Ride Off: Used to move your opposing player off the line of the ball or spoil his shot. A ride-off is hard and dramatic, but executed properly, does not endanger the horses.

Third Man: Usually at mid-field; does not call the fouls but is the final word in the case of a dispute between the two mounted umpires.

Most fouls occur when the play is dangerous to the horses and their players. Below is a list of common fouls.

• Zig-zag or cut across in front of a galloping man.

• Crossing close behind another pony to get into position to hook the opponent.

• Reaching over or under a pony to hook another player’s mallet.

• Bumping a player at an angle and causing the horse to stagger. The players must be parallel to bump or ride-off fairly.

FOULS IN POLO

Polo, also known as the “Sport of Kings” is the oldest team sport in the world. The first documentation of the game occurred in the 3rd century AD in Persia. It was a favorite of royalty and aristocrats within the Persian, Chinese, Byzantine and Japanese Empires and was used to prepare young leaders for the rigors of war. Through military channels, the game eventually spread to England and from there was brought to the United States by James Gordon Bennett. By the late 1800’s, the first club, the Westchester Polo Club was created and by 1890, the United States Polo Association (USPA), which is the present-day governing body of Polo in North America, was formed. Today, polo continues to grow and there are hundreds of clubs across the United States and the world with players of all ages, backgrounds and skill sets.

Nestled on the Northeast border of the Temecula Valley and

situated on 15 acres of hand planted vineyards is Doffo Winery. Famous for exquisite, handcrafted reds, Doffo is focused on small lot, limited production wines made in the old world style. Founded in 1997 by Marcelo Doffo, it is one of a few micro-boutique wineries in the region and it is a family-run operation.

Marcello grew up in an Italian family in Argentina, where in his early years, he learned the principles of farming. When you visit the winery, you will first be met by the sound of music playing from speakers positioned among the vines. This is played from sunup to sunset to soothe the plants. In addition, Marcello practices good farming techniques such as meticulous handcrafting, crop-thinning and minimal irrigation, all of which ensure the production of the highest quality wine.

The Doffo family is proud to share their Argentine and Italian heritage, and they are the only winery in the region to feature an outdoor, wood-burning oven and grill where they often serve “The Parilla,” a delicious staple of Argentine cuisine. The winery is also home to MotoDoffo, the family’s private collection of over 100 racing and vintage motorcycles dating back to the 1930’s.

So be sure to stop by on your next trip through the Temecula Valley Wine country. As the Doffo’s lovingly say, “visit us once, and you are family forever.”

France

Just outside of Paris, in the heart of the Loire Valley is the province of Touraine, an area inseparable from the rich

and opulent history of France. Renowned for its beautiful chateaux and historic castles, Touraine evokes stories that connect back to Joan of Arc, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. Nestled within this town is Temecula Valley’s sister club, Polo Club de Touraine.

Polo has been played in France since the nineteenth century with the first documented match being held in 1880 in the town of Dieppe. Today, there are over 30 clubs throughout the country. Polo Club de Touraine, is one of the newer establishments having opened their gates in 2000. They operate their club under the core value of traditional French polo – camaraderie. After matches and

Touraine

events, the players often sit down with their families to share a meal and stories. Players exchange game strategy and enjoy the company of their loved ones, and the children play in the grass with small mallets, while pretending to be on horseback.

The founder of the Polo Club de Touraine, Yvan Guillemin, started playing polo at a young age. His grandfather, a 6-goal player, encouraged him to take up polo and sent him to England to learn the game. Since then, Yvan has fallen in love with the sport and has dedicated his life to teaching and playing polo. He is the head of polo academy at Polo Club de Touraine, and many renowned players have launched their careers under his training. One of most distinguished students is his own son Thibault, who is now head of the polo academy in both Paris and Chantilly.

Yvan’s polo career began in England and took him to Paris, where he became a professionally ranked player. In many ways, polo has shaped the trajectory of Yvan’s life. He credits the game for teaching him many important lessons, one of which is that winning is largely a matter of will. Yvan worked his game up to a 5-goal handicap and is today considered by many to be one of the best players in France. The game has taken him around the world; in addition to competing in England and France, Yvan has also played in Germany and Argentina. One of his greatest memories is competing at the 1989 World Championships in Berlin, at the very stadium that hosted the last Olympic polo match. He also fondly recalls winning the Cartier Open in Paris.

Page 32: 2014 Temecula Valley Polo Magazine

32 TEMECULA VALLEY POLO CLUB

FranceYvan has been a competitive player from a young age but in recent years he has slowed down due to a heart transplant that he received in late 1999. Since that time, Yvan has discovered a new passion, breeding mares and he now only plays on horses that he has bred.

Polo Club de Touraine’s season runs from the first weekend of April to late September, and while competitive polo is played throughout the 6-month season, the majority of their players are amateurs with a few well-known French celebrities such as actor and singer Guy Marchand. The club also draws many international players from around the world. Our own President and Founder, Geraldine Strunsky will be playing there this summer with her daughter Emilie. This part of France holds a special place in Geraldine’s heart, as it is located 45 minutes from her grandparents’ home, “La Meunerie,” and it is where she spent countless summers in her childhood.

Yvan Guillemin and all the members of Polo Club de Touraine are thrilled to call The Temecula Valley Polo their sister club and they’d like to invite everyone to come experience French Polo firsthand. For more information about Polo Club de Touraine and their 2014 season, please visit Polo-Touraine.com.
