Introducing Maria Vitale Salon: The Center for Healthy Hair There is no such thing as bad hair, only poorly treated hair. Now’s the time to change all that!

By Hope Bundrant

When we think about our health we don’t usually think about our hair. I thinkit’s an easy area to forget about. We try to eat healthy and live healthy butwhen it comes to our hair, we usually only care about how it looks. But whatabout its health?

With all the products we put on our hair, we are unknowingly killing it. Weare causing it to thin and wear down. Most of the products we use are simplycoating it over and over like wax on a floor, causing it to not breathe. Ourpoor hair is suffocating and we just keep layering more goop on it.

You might be thinking that when you wash it, all the gunk comes off. But itdoesn’t. From shampoo to conditioner, from gel to color, it all builds up andactually forms a hard coating over the hair.

The mission at Maria Vitale Salon is to teach their clients how to achievehealthy hair & scalp by formulating a plan using PHYTO PARIS, who recom-mends alternating between hair care concerns in order to achieve best re-sults. They focus on formulating a specific prescription for your hair. Theybegin by using a scoping machine to evaluate the current condition of yourhair & scalp which will guide them with the knowledge in how to proceed.

So how do you get the hard build up off so it can breathe again? The firststep is with a scalp purifying and hydrating treatment. They are actually pro-viding this service free right now with the purchase of a haircut, for first timeclients.

After that, your prescription may vary starting with treatments or just chang-ing your shampoo to our Daily Essentials line that will help remove current

build up and allow your hair and scalp to breathe freely. They are there tohelp guide you and want your experience at Maria Vitale Salon to be a lastingone. Therefore, they first establish their clients desired outcome and optionsto achieve that result based upon budget, time constraints and currentlifestyle.

Their products work hand in hand to help achieve and maintain your needs.PHYTO Paris, explores the world in search of the finest ingredients. Overall, their formulas contain over 500 active botanical ingredients and are 95%botanical. Their scientists extract the most active molecules found in the root, flower, bud, fruit, resin, or seeds.

The manufacturing secret lies in the various extraction methods used, such asdecoction or maceration. Also, PHYTO's highly concentrated formulas arehoused in recyclable aluminum and glass for their non-porous propertieswhich help minimize the use of preservatives.

The result: formulas that are highly concentrated in active botanical ingredi-ents, with minimal to no water added, and no parabens, formaldehyde, petrochemicals, synthetic dyes and alcohol, or silicones.

To meet your hair coloring needs they feel it’s necessary to use a product linethat carries the same message. They chose a color line that uses a patented“green tea “formula, naturally derived ingredients with fade resistant resultsand tubes that are manufactured using 100% wind power and are madefrom post-consumer recycled (PCR) content.

Take if from me, my hair has never felt better! It feels soft and healthy and isso much easier to manage now that the gunk is gone. The staff is so freindlyand helpful with styling tips. Because the PHYTO products are 95% natural, Iexpected them to be very expensive. But they aren’t. They are the same priceyou would pay for salon products but last three times longer. I was shockedwhen I left and after the first time using them at home.

Maria Vitale Salon is the place to go if you want healthy, beautiful hair, naturally.Book your appointment today to take advantage of their special offer for HealthyTimes readers- 951-693-4247.

Compost Happens! Four Steps To Build Your Own Compost PileBy Andy Cannella

To have a healthy, thriving garden, your vegetables need a healthy, thriving soil.A nutrient rich, bio-diverse soil allows plants to grow larger, produce more andhave better resistance to disease and insects.

Soil types in our area can range from hard-as-rock decomposed granite to loosesand. While there are some of the trace minerals that plants need, they are typ-ically lacking in nutrients. The best way to add those nutrients is by addingcompost. Compost also improves the soils texture, water retention and poros-ity. The best thing of all is that you can make it yourself with materials that youwould have otherwise thrown away!

1. Select your compost site. Composting can be done in a free-standing pileor in a bin. While the bin might be more aesthetically pleasing, the processand end product are the same no matter how you do it. Start by selecting asite, you will need a space about 3 feet wide and 6 feet long. It doesn’t needto be the focal point of you garden, but should be convenient and close to awater source. A good choice is the spot you will have a garden bed next year.

2. Next gather your materials. Compost is made by combining green/wet anddry/brown materials in equal amounts by volume. Never add meat, fat, bonesor dog and cat waste. Examples of green materials are lawn clippings, kitchenscraps, coffee grounds, egg shells and various manures. Brown materials arethings like dried leaves and can be a little harder to come by than the greens.A good and inexpensive source is a bale of straw.

3. Now, use those materials to build your compost pile. The optimal size ofthe pile needed to generate the temperatures necessary to kill weed seed andpathogens is 3 feet tall by 3 feet high by 3 feet deep. Start by loosening the firstcouple inches of soil with a shovel or spading fork. It is important that the com-post pile is in direct contact with the soil because this is where the microorgan-isms and macroorganisms that will be breaking down the compost materialscome from.

Start your compost pile by adding a 3 to 4 inch base layer of brown material, then a 3 to 4 inch layer of green material. Keep repeating the layering until thepile is 3 feet tall, ending with a layer of brown material. It may take a few weeksof gathering materials and layering to get the pile to that size, but when youdo, water it just until it runs out the bottom.

4. Next, turn the pile by moving the material from the pile to the spot rightnext to it. This loosens and adds oxygen to the pile and speeds up the com-posting process. Add water again. The goal is to have the material as wet as awrung out sponge, but more water will be needed at first because the particlesize is larger. Turn the pile once a week, adding water as necessary. You will havefinished compost in 14 to 16 weeks. For a more information, Master Com-posters offer free composting workshops throughout Riverside County. A sched-ule of those workshops can be found at www.rivcowm.org.

Then, every week, we will maintain your garden for you by succession planting, weeding, feeding, adjusting the irrigation for the weather and harvesting. Plansare also available to give you participation in the garden activities to any degree youdesire, with only monthly or quarterly consultations to keep your garden headed inthe right direction.

We use only sustainable garden practices to ensure the long-term health and pro-ductivity of your garden. Natural amendments, rather than chemical fertilizers, areused to build the soil, which in turn feeds the plants. Crops are rotated to differentsections of the garden year to year to reduce the naturally occurring pests thatwould otherwise build up in the soil. Companion planting is used to encourage ben-eficial pollinator and predator insects to visit your garden. And natural pest controlmethods rather than chemicals are used should the pests get out of hand.

What is Yeast Overgrowth? By Dr. Alexander Shikhman, Institute for Specialized Medicine

Candida albicans is a part of normal intestinal microflora. Under cer-tain circumstances, the usual yeast-like form of C. albicans switchesinto an invasive, multicellular filamentous one and can become path-ogenic for humans. This condition is commonly known as yeast over-growth.

Candida overgrowth can cause a broad gamut of symptoms includingbloating, abdominal pain, fatigue and diarrhea, hives, a craving forsweets, acne, migrane headaches and eczema. Candida overgrowth isfrequently seen in individuals with gluten intolerance and celiac dis-ease, those who frequently use antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflam-matory drugs, steroid hormones and birth control pills.

The overgrowth can manifest in several ways including thrush, chronic yeast infections or skin rashes. Thrush is a yeast infection inthe mouth that is typically characterized by a white coating on thetongue. Yeast infections are often found in women as vaginal yeast in-fections. Skin rashes manifest as red, inflamed areas typically in warmareas such as underarms.

Candida can be difficult to get rid of because it forms a gel-like struc-ture (biofilm) around itself, which prevents antibiotics and antifungalproducts from penetrating. Because of this barrier, candida can existfor months or even years.

The debate about wisdom teeth has always centered around one majorquestion: Do wisdom teeth need to be removed or not?

It has long been established that wisdom teeth that have associatedpathology (tooth decay, gum disease, infection, pathologic cysts or tu-mors enveloping the root) need to be removed. However, the questionhas always remained whether pain free, erupted (in the mouth) or im-pacted (not in the mouth) wisdom teeth have to be removed? Does“pain-free” wisdom tooth also mean “disease-free” wisdom tooth?

Recently, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeonspublished the results of the “Third Molar Clinical Trials.” This was a majorclinical study performed by “The Task Force for Third Molar.” The TaskForce, which consisted of distinguished clinicians in the field of Oral andMaxillofacial Surgery from major US academic institutions, collected andinterpreted clinical information relating to the management of third molar“wisdom” teeth over the period of fifteen years. The results of their workare outlined below:

Part A: Frequency of disease involving the wisdom teeth in patients inwhom wisdom teeth are asymptomatic (pain-free):

25% to 60% of patients, depending on their age or gender, had clinicalevidence of inflammatory gum disease. 28% to 77% of patients withasymptomatic wisdom teeth will have tooth decay (caries).

Part B: What happens to wisdom teeth if they are retained (not removed)?

Retained wisdom teeth change their position over time, but not in a pre-dictable way. They may erupt into the mouth and subsequently developdecay and inflammatory gum disease.

Among patients with pain-free wisdom teeth who have no evidence of in-flammatory gum disease, 30% to 40% developed inflammatory gum dis-ease after a period of 5 years.

In 40% of patients with visible wisdom teeth and gum disease and boneloss present, the bone loss is expected to also involve the other molarteeth within 2 years.

Young and adolescent patients with visible wisdom teeth have a greaterrisk of developing inflammatory gum disease compared with their peerswithout visible wisdom teeth.

Only 75% of impacted, pain-free wisdom teeth are free of disease. So, ifa patient has 4 impacted wisdom teeth, even though they are pain free, chances are at least one of them has either: decay, inflammatory gum dis-

ease, cyst or a tumor around it.

Among patients with pain-free and disease-free wisdom teeth who choseto keep their wisdom teeth, at least one third of the wisdom teeth de-velop disease within 4 years and need removal.

Part C: Summary of outcomes after wisdom teeth removal:

Removing wisdom teeth significantly improves the gum and bone healthof adjacent teeth. Removal of wisdom teeth resulted in threefold reduc-tion in the proportion of adjacent molar teeth with gum and bone dis-ease.

Most young, healthy adults may expect to have full recovery within 5days or less after wisdom teeth removal.

Increasing age (greater than 24 years), level of impaction of the wisdomtooth and the need to remove bone are associated with delayed patientrecovery after the surgery and delayed clinical healing. Not surprisingly, delayed clinical healing also increases the risk for delayed recovery of

lifestyle (daily activity, recreation, social life), oral function (talking, chewing, resuming normal diet)and prolongs bad breath and dis-comfort in the mouth.

Pain-free Wisdom teeth does notmean disease-free wisdom teeth.

Even if the wisdom teeth are notbothering you, you may still havewisdom tooth decay or inflamma-tory gum disease around your wis-dom teeth.

The older you are when you getyour wisdom teeth out (after theage of 24), the more difficult theprocedure, the longer the recov-ery, and the higher the risk forcomplications.

If you choose to keep your wis-dom teeth, make sure your dentistroutinely monitors them for anyevidence of pathology developingaround them.

If you have questions about yourwisdom teeth and would like toschedule a consultation, please callDr.Tsvetov’s office at 951-302-9100. We will be delighted to talkto you!

Studies reveal that the way you think is powerful. The old adage from yourgrandmother, “mind over matter,” now shows that an attitude adjustmentcan change your life. Lynn McTaggart, in the Intention Experiment says, “Athought is a thing that affects other things.” Here are eight steps to tweakyour thinking and transform your present conditions:

Step 1: Avoid overwhelm coming from an over-identification with familyand friends which prevent you from finding what you really want to do withyour life. When you lose touch with your real self through the various rolesyou play, you can feel stressed out and ineffective. Instead, develop greaterauthenticity with a sincere curiosity to know the weaker parts of yourself –the shy or easily intimidated - and you will be rewarded with newfound clar-ity.

Step 2: Overcome resistance to your creativity, which often disguises itself asperfectionism. Brene Brown says: “Healthy striving is self-focused: “Howcan I improve.” Perfectionism is other-focused: “What will they think.” Dosomething you love every day – even for just thirty minutes and the mo-mentum you build becomes a law onto itself. Sing, paint, write, or start anew enterprise. Your inner fire becomes an attractive force, sparking a senseof possibility. Your enthusiasm turns into purpose by casting sunlight overshadows.

Step 3: Slow down, listen to your gut feelings – your inner fire comes fromthere. Discover what hole inside you’re trying to fill with busyness. Youremotions are not meant to scare you, but to connect you to intuitive guid-ance and wisdom.

Step 4: Let go of what you can’t control and take the higher road wheneverpossible. Your mind will reject heaviness and your body will only carry somuch baggage before it turns on itself. Let go of resentments or memorieswhich pull your focus backward. Inspiration and the answers you seek are al-ways in the present.

Step 5: Keep your eye on the ‘prize.’ Maintain your own personal value sys-tem, which is what you answer to at the end of the day. This raises self-es-teem in the midst of uncertainty. There is something amazing and uniquefor you to do that will make a difference in someone’s life.

Step 6: Whisper ‘yes’ to a dream and practice non-attachment to the results.Give space for the Divine Mystery to unfold in your life. When you don’t in-ternalize setbacks as trauma, you increase faith and the resilience to bounceback without hindering your progress.

Step 7: Practice mindfulness through awareness of your breathing through-out the day and you will keep your brain from going into auto-pilot. Thissimple practice creates a space for appreciation to crowd out troublingthoughts. Soon the space is filled with more reasons to be grateful.

Step 8: Practice compassion. You are both the donor and the beneficiary ofyour own loving and forgiving feelings toward others – all others. The DaliLama says, “The rewards of practicing compassion go first to the practi-tioner.”

A changed attitude will be reflected in everything you do. You begin to an-ticipate the best instead of expecting the worst and you make healthierchoices. You’re the only one who can experience this for yourself and youwill see evidence sooner than you think.

Five Benefits to a Good Night’s Sleep &Five Tips for Getting It!How many hours of sleep did you get last night?

Experts say that getting an extra hour of sleepcan change your life for the better. Studies showthat the gap between getting just enough sleepand getting too little sleep may affect yourhealth, your mood, your weight, and even yoursex life.

If you are getting less than the recommendedseven or eight hours of sleep, here are some rea-sons why you should shut off the cell phonesand computers and go to bed an hour earlytonight.

A Healthy Makeover. Getting a good night'ssleep by itself, won't prevent diseases, but vari-ous studies have found a link between a lack ofsleep and some serious health problems such asheart disease, heart attacks, diabetes, and obe-sity.

Sufficient sleep will improve memory, curb in-flammation, and spur creativity, resulting in ahealthier and happier you! Also, getting enoughsleep can lower stress levels, and stress is a majorcause of disease.

More Whoopee Time! Sleep disorders andchronic sleep loss can hit the sack hard in an-other area: sex. According to a poll conducted bythe National Sleep Foundation, up to 26% ofpeople say that their sex lives tend to suffer be-cause they're just too tired.

The combination of low energy and increasedtension caused by lack of sleep -- a situation

known as “tense tiredness” -- can also lead tosexual dysfunction. Lack of sleep can wreakhavoc on your sex life, relationships, and yoursocial life.

Less pain. It has been estimated that nearly two-thirds of those with chronic pain suffer from asleep disorder. If you have chronic pain - or acutepain from a recent injury - getting enough sleepmay actually make you hurt less.

Lack of sleep can worsen pain, and of coursemore intense pain then continues to interferewith sleep, so the two symptoms can become avicious cycle. Many studies have shown a linkbetween sleep loss and lower pain threshold.

A Sleepy Brain Equals Weight Gain. Losingsleep tends to make people eat more and gainweight, and now a new study suggests that onereason may be the impact that sleep deprivationhas on the brain.

The research showed that depriving people ofsleep for one night created pronounced changesin the way their brains responded to high-calo-rie junk foods.

On days when the subjects had not had propersleep, fattening foods like potato chips andsweets stimulated stronger responses in a part ofthe brain that helps govern the motivation toeat. But at the same time, the subjects experi-enced a sharp reduction in activity in the frontalcortex, a higher-level part of the brain whereconsequences are weighed and rational decisionsare made.

Now that we have identified various disadvan-tages caused by insufficient sleep, try these reme-dies to get your routine on track.

Practice Good Sleep Hygiene. Follow goodsleep habits, especially ensuring the bedroom en-

vironment is conducive to sleep. Among experts'recommendations: Use the bedroom only forsleep and sex; keep regular sleep and wake times;ensure the bedroom is a dark, cool, quiet place;and get computers and TVs out of the sleep en-vironment, because they stimulate the brain andtheir light tells the body "it's daytime," disrupt-ing the internal clock.

Try Not To Self-Medicate. Treating yourself withover-the-counter medications is not the best ideabecause they never solve the problem. They justhelp you through it. But those medications caninduce next-day grogginess - what some patientscall "sleep hangovers"- and they can actuallyhave an alerting or a disorienting side effects, es-pecially on the elderly.

Have A Healthy Work-Life Balance. It’s impor-tant to have some sort of break from the day'sstress before sleep. If you know you're going tobed at 9:30, stop your day at 9:15, or sooner ifyou can. Shortchanging that break can be arecipe for insomnia. Write down all the thingsyou need to worry about on a piece of paper, anddo your best to leave them behind. Whetherasleep or awake, there's likely nothing you cando about them until tomorrow anyway.

Keep dinner light. When you go to bed, youwant to neither be hungry or stuffed either feel-ing can keep you awake. So if you tend to eatyour dinner late, this is even more important. The alternative is going to bed later, but youdon't want that either! Rich, fatty foods areharder for the stomach to digest. The heavier thefood, the more conscious of it you'll be, makingit harder to fall asleep. And be wary of spicyfoods -- heartburn is just as unpleasant at nightas it is during the day

Five Benefits to a Good Night’s Sleep and Five Tips for Getting It Cont. from previous page

Memorial weekend for me seems to always be the start of my favorite season, summer! I love the sun, the warm weather and anything to do with water.Whether it be the pool, a river, lake or the beautiful ocean, the summer sea-son triggers that desire in many of us to go out and play.

Although sun and water make a wonderful combination, they aren’t alwaysthe best thing for our hair or scalp. Our skin is not the only part of us thatcan be damaged by the things we do while enjoying the summer season.Lots of exposure to the sun can fade/lighten our hair, which can also cause itto become drier.

The water in that refreshing pool can also do the same. But there are waysthat you can protect your beautiful mane from these unintentional offenders.Wearing hats is a great way to not only protect your hair and scalp, but withthe right brim can also protect your face and neck. There are also hair prod-ucts that will protect your locks from the harsh rays of the sun. When apply-ing sunscreen on your hair or skin, don’t forget your scalp! I see sun burnedscalps on my clients at this time of year, especially where the part is. This canlead to peeling, dry scalp and other skin issues.

When you’re out playing at the pool, it helps to wet your hair with the hosebefore you jump in. Our hair is like a sponge and, when dry, it will absorbwhatever liquid we put on it. Better to fill it with plain water than the poolwater which contains chlorine and other chemicals that can not only dry anddamage our hair, but in some cases cause it to turn green. Wetting the hairbefore diving in makes it much harder for the chlorinated water to penetrateyour hair cuticle because it’s already full. Much like a sponge, if it’s alreadyfull of water it can’t take on any more.

When you leave the pool, wring your hair out and then rinse it again with thehose. It also helps to keep a spray on/leave in conditioner in your beach bag.Applying this to your wet hair while you’re out enjoying your summer fun willnot only protect your hair but help to keep it shiny and hydrated.

Another option for healthy summer hair ise to wet your hair and put your fa-vorite deep conditioner on and wrap it in a bun. The warmth of the sun willhelp the hydrating and conditioning agents to penetrate deeper into yourhair. Rinse it out at the end of your day and enjoy the beautiful soft happylocks you’ll have.

Go ahead get out there and enjoy your summer plans. Just remember to re-spect the elements and your hair and scalp by protecting them from theharsh things of the summer that can leave you feeling like the Gobi Dessert, while still allowing that wonderful vitamin D to leave you looking sun kissedrather than sun burnt.

The word of this season is Hydration, Hydration, Hydration. You won’t regretit and neither will your lovely locks. Enjoy your summer everyone!

Beware of Ambien AddictionBy Ranch Creek RecoveryAmbien is the brand name of the drug Zolpidem, which is prescribed by doc-tors to treat insomnia. This is a popular drug for business travelers sufferingfrom jet lag, and is commonly being used by teens. Doctors typically prescribeAmbien in low dosses and for a period of no longer than 30 days because of thepotential danger involved with taking the medication.

Users of the drug are said to feel comfortable, relaxed, and sleepy and the highis typically considered to be like that of drinking a lot of alcohol because someusers report losing control of their body while on Ambien. Other similaritieswith alcohol use include waking up with a hangover, headaches, memory loss,

drowsiness, and nausea.

Paradoxical Excitation is the term doctors use to describe the unusual behaviors ofsome patients who are on the medication, which can include: walking, eating, oreven driving a car without any recollection of doing so. These behaviors are in-creased when a dependence on the medication develops.

Users are at risk of developing a tolerance of Ambien if they use the medicationlonger than 30 days, which can lead to increasing the size of the dosage in order tofeel the effects and furthermore, lead to overdosing. Ambien has the ability tochange the chemistry in the brain to trick it into thinking it needs the drug in orderto function, and that is a serious problem.

Ambien dependence is on the rise with teenagers everywhere. Of the six millionnew prescription drug abusers, 44 percent are younger than 18 years old, says a

study by the United States Departmentof Health and Human Services.

It is crucial for drug prevention agenciesto target the younger generation in orderto get the important information acrossabout the dangers of prescription med-ication like Ambien.

When coming off of Ambien, with-drawal symptoms include: panic attacks, irritability, stomach cramps, fatigue, andsweating.

A medical detox is recommended alongwith impatient substance abuse treat-ment. This type of care would not onlyprovide the individual with the propermedical care they need but also providethem with proper counseling and ther-apy. This treatment and care will helpthe person deal with physical and emo-tional dependency that may have devel-oped and prevent possible relapse in thefuture.

sweet veggies like corn or peas.

If you can keep this up for a week, you willabsolutely see results. Now onto the fats…

Tip 2: Keep up the fats

Just like your body dependson a regular eating sched-ule to burn calories effi-ciently, it also needs to geta regular intake of fat tofeel safe to release thestored fat. Most fat lossdiets tell you to reduce your fat intake so youbody can burn stored fats. That’s not entirelytrue.

The tip is to eat less fat, but keep eatinghealthy fats regularly. Think of it like this: Youhave a bunch of stored bad fat, the kind thatbuild up and cause cellulite. They are just sit-ting there, globbed together with toxins thatyou took in when you ate those fats. They arefats from hydrogenated oils, palm oil, excessanimal fats, etc…They need to leave. How-ever, unless your body knows those fats willbe replaced, it won’t let go of them. So, thegoal is to give yourself a fat transfusion by re-placing the bad fats with good fats.

There are some ways to do this without gain-ing more fat. One way is to take a good 3-6-9Omega supplement three times a day. This en-sures that your body is getting the fats itneeds on a regular schedule.

Then, you can also add fats into your mealsthrough: ½ an avocado, an ounce of almonds,a Tbsp of almond butter on a couple ricecakes. It is really important to not overdue thenuts. A lot of people think nuts are a greatsource of protein, and true, they may containprotein grams, but they are super high in fats,so they are NOT to be used as a proteinsource. Use them sparingly as your healthyfat. Fats are still fats. Too much and you willgain instead of lose.

Tip 3: Fat Metabolizing Supplements

Including fat metabolizingsupplements in your regularvitamin/supplement regimeis super important. Theywork by allowing your body to process thefats in a quicker, more efficient way. They alsoprotect your organs in the process. Again, thekey is to naturally lose weight and burn fatquickly.

Here are five supplements I recommend:

Chromium Picolinate: Works by allowingyour body to better break down and burn fatand store less. It also aids in the formation oflean muscle, which burns more calories.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA): It is a naturaloccurring omega-6 related fatty acid. It helpsthe body increase metabolic rates, boost theimmune system and keep cholesterol levels incheck.

L-carnitine: It is a metabolite, a buildingblock for protein, which helps your body con-vert fat into energy more quickly. By speedingup the conversion rate, you burn fat caloriesfaster each day.

Thermogenic Fat Burner: There are a variety ofthese available. They heat your body up fromthe inside to burn fat faster, similar to how aninfrared sauna works. This is a supplementyou take on an empty stomach prior to doingcardio. I see a lot of people wearing theirhoodies and sweats, trying to heat up whiledoing their cardio. Sweating from the externalsources is not actually the way to burn fatfaster. Do it by heating up from the inside, thermogenically, to increase fat loss. Fat burn-ers have had a bad wrap since the whole

A Natural Solution for Chronic Yeast OvergrowthBy Gluten-Free RemediesCandidacillin is a proprietary blend of four food ingredients, including cal-cium undecylenate, calcium disodium EDTA, caprylic acid and monolau-rine, composed by Gluten-Free Remedies to optimize the gutmicroflora/microbiome and to control the intestinal yeast overgrowth.

Calcium undecylenate is a calcium salt of undecylenic acid, an organic un-saturated fatty acid derived from castor oil. In the United States, unde-cylenic acid is FDA-approved as an over-the-counter antifungal agent. It iscommonly used to treat fungal skin infections, such as athlete's foot, ring-worm, and jock itch. Undecylenic acid inhibits conversion of yeast cellsinto the pathogenic form.

Calcium disodium EDTA is a mixture of calcium and sodium salts of ethyl-enediaminetetraacetic acid, widely abbreviated as EDTA. EDTA helps de-stroy negative microbial and fungal biofilms thus allowing other positiveanti-microbial or anti-fungal agents target problem areas. Furthermore,EDTA and its salts express a strong antifungal activity toward Candida al-bicans.

Caprylic acid is an eight-carbon saturated fatty acid found naturally in themilk of various mammals, and is a minor constituent of coconut oil andpalm kernel oil. Caprylic acid possesses strong natural antimicrobial andantifungal activity, and inhibits growth of various microorganisms includ-ing Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus and various species of Strep-tococcus.

Monolaurin is found in coconut oil and human breast milk. Monolaurinhas strong antibacterial and other antifungal effects in vitro. The antimi-crobial activity of monolaurin is amplified by EDTA and its salts.

Potential indications for use of cadidacillin acid in humans include: gas-trointestinal yeast /candida infection, periodontal disease, chronic diar-rhea and leaky gut syndrome.

Dosage Information:

Candidacillin should be taken on an empty stomach three times a day 30min before meals. Consume plenty of fluid. Candidacillin should bespaced out from supplements containing calcium, magnesium, iron or

strontium salts by at least 1 hr.

To amplify the efficacy of candidacillin, we recommend to take it in acombination with betain HCl. Due to the fact that candidacillin can inter-fere with calcium, magnesium and iron metabolism, we recommend tocheck serum levels of calcium, magnesium, ferritin and serum iron at leastonce a month. We also recommend taking candidacillin five dayson and 2days off for 4 weeks with subsequent alternation with black walnut hallsextract + Pau D’Arco + Artemisia/berberine blend. During candidacillintherapy, take multivatamins and minerals during candidacilin off days.

For a complete list of supplements visit www.glutenfreeremedies.com

Tired of searching for effective supplements?

Ephedra scare. Fat burners including Ephedraor anything similar have been banned by theFDA and you should not take those. For more detail about this tip, read it here:http://blogs.naturalnews.com/top-5-supple-ments-to-supercharge-fat-burning.

Tip 4: Cardiovascular Exercise

A friend of mine is a car-dio nut. She will honestlyget on the Stairmaster foran hour at a time, on fullintensity. However, it’snot doing much for her.She simply loves it,though. When we thinkabout cardio for fat and weight loss, we needto remember what the goal is. The goal is toburn fat, not muscle. Too much at is bad.Muscle is good!

When doing cardio, keeping at 70% of yourheart rate is the goal. That will basically becardio that will allow you to maintain conver-sation without losing your breath in theprocess. The simplest way to figure your targetheart rate is by subtracting your age from 220,then take that number and multiply it by70%. So the formula is 220 – x = y(.70). An ex-ample is mine: 220 – 41 =179 x .70 = 125. Bystaying at this heart rate, you will most likelyburn fat without sacrificing muscle.

Additionally, it is important not to do toomuch cardio. What happens when we do toomuch cardio is that our body will adjust to itand we will stop burning as much. It is betterto do about a ½ hour twice a day, everydayyou can. That might sound like a lot at first, but work your way up to it. And, make sure totake your thermogenic before your morningcardio, on an empty stomach.

Cardio can be tedius, so here’s a little tip:watch tv. Pretty soon, that half an hour isover and you didn’t even realize it!

Tip 5: LiftWeights

Remember to keep put-ting on muscle! Don’tworry ladies, you won’tlook like a man whenyou work out withweights. Your body will only put on as muchmuscle as the protein you eat. Eating theamount of protein I suggested for women, 25grams per meal, the result will be toned andfeminine.

The goal is to stay toned while you lose fatand weight. If however, you don’t work onburning fat too, the muscle will just build un-derneath the fat and cause you to look a little

fatter. What I tell people who approach me atthe gym is that they already have the muscles. They are just hiding under the layer of fat thatneeds to go. Once that extra fat is gone throughthe tips above, the muscle will reveal itself.

So it is important to stick with all the areas- nu-trition, supplements, cardio and working out.

This probably doesn’t sound easy or quick butbelieve me, it is. After only one week you willsee the difference. The key is to integrateevery area I’ve talked about. When you onlyfocus on only one area and ignore the rest, the process of weightand fat loss slowsdown. My motto isthat if you’re going tosacrifice your time, food and energy, stackyour deck and do itright.

Rainbow Bridge of LightBy Iah Ka Onge-JaAscension is a state of bliss by beingin harmony and at one with all.The unified chakra is a vital key forascension. To ascend you must lit-erally expand your heart chakra toencompass your higher and sevenmain chakras until it becomes oneunified chakra. This becomes one

elongated column of light, embodies your higher self and builds a rain-bow bridge to the Source. You then function with a constant frequency oflove through the heart as a unified whole.

Our seven main chakras are separate from our heart chakra and eachother, thus bringing life challenges that create karma since your physical, emotional, and mental bodies react separately. For example, when youperceive anger or power being directed at you, you respond unconsciouslywith the first chakra (fear), or with the third chakra (power). So eitheryou flee or stand still. A whole new alignment occurs with the unifiedchakra. Your response comes from your whole being, meaning that youare active rather than reactive, love-based rather than fear based, andtranspersonal rather that personality-based.

The unity chakra, the base foundation of your rainbow bridge, will allowthe personality to release all sense of separateness and fear of death. Youcan build your rainbow bridge of light higher to ascend back to theSource.

Rainbow Bridge Meditation

Get into a comfortable and relaxed position, deepening your breathing, and breathing Light into the heart chakra. Ask Spirit to blend with yourunified field through the heart chakra. Your heart chakra glows brightlyand becomes a sphere that opens and expands like a flower in geometricalshapes, colors and sound. You will see it grow just taller than you are.

On each outbreath, visualize your heart chakra becoming larger, openingin all directions like a sphere. Expand it to include each succeeding pairof chakras as you breathe in and out: third and fifth, second and sixth, first and seventh, the omega (8 inches below spine which connects you tothe planetary consciousness) and alpha (8 inches above your head whichconnects you to your fifth-dimensional Lightbody), your knees andeighth, your ankles and ninth, your feet and tenth.

Your unified chakra is now a sphere of golden light, about 20 to 50 feet indiameter, and forms the center of your unified field, which could be sev-eral miles in diameter. You will feel waves of love, compassion and caring. You can just bask in this glow, ask questions, or request guidance.

Ask that this energy stay with you in your heart chakra and guide you inall that you do. Ask that you, as Spirit, blend with the unified field tokeep it aligned and to embody an ever greater proportion of ever higherfrequency energy. Finally, when you feel complete, let the image fadeand return your consciousness to your surroundings. A good affirmationis “I am in unity with Spirit.”

You can build your rainbow bridge further and experience yourself as atruly multi-dimensional being by including the 11th chakra (your groupsoul level), the 12th chakra (the Christed level of your spirit self), the13th chakra (the I AM Presence), and the 14th chakra (the Source). It isimportant to unify your chakras several times a day. With a little prac-tice, you can say “unify” to yourself to instantly snap your chakras to oneunified chakra.

Do You Know Your “Advanced” Risk Factors for a Heart Attack or Stroke?By Dr. Wes YoungbergNot long ago, over 20 family members came together for Christmas atmy in-laws Ohio country home where my wife grew up. It was a wonder-ful 10 days of making snowmen, having snow ball fights and sleddingdown the big hill behind the house. The best part was just being togetherand reminiscing all the good times we had spent together over the years. The day before we were all scheduled to leave, my mother-in-law devel-oped clots in her legs and died the next day from a massive pulmonary em-bolism. We were all stunned; grateful that we had spent so much qualitytime together but shaking our heads that we had not seen this coming. Our time of celebration had ended in tragedy. Looking back, It’s easy to ra-tionalize with statements like, “well she had 85 good years”, but the real-ity was that there were risk factors that we could of paid attention to thatcould of, if managed properly, given her more good years of life with thefamily she loved.

Recently a friend lost his father suddenly because of blood clots didn’t re-spond quickly enough to standard therapy.

Last week I took time from my busy clinical schedule to have a new com-prehensive cardiovascular lab profile done on myself.

New research shows that 60% of patients who have a heart attack of strokeactually have normal traditional risk factors. Their cholesterol, triglyceride

blood fats, LDL “bad cholesterol”,and HDL “good cholesterol” areall normal! In other words youcould pass your next physi-cal exam with your doctorand be told you areperfectly healthy, andlater that same yearhave a massive stroke orheart attack.

That is why I now recommend the Hunter Heart Ad-vanced Cardiovascular Risk Assessment Profile. As valuable as theLipid/Cholesterol profile is, it only picks up 50% of your actual risk for de-veloping heart disease. Including the following tests in your health riskevaluation improve early identification of your actual cardiovascular risk to90%. I strongly recommend taking the following tests: sd-LDL is the spe-cific form of small dense LDL cholesterol that more easily promotes plaque;HDL2b is the most heart protective form of HDL cholesterol that actuallyremoves plaque from your arteries; Lipoprotein (a) is a form of the “bad”LDL cholesterol that is ten times more likely to form plaque than regularLDL cholesterol; Homocysteine is a protein in the blood that increases therisk for atherosclerosis, heart disease, and stroke; low Vitamin D levels in theblood strongly influence risk of diabetes and heart disease; ApolipoprotineE is a gene mutation test that identifies advanced risk for both heart dis-ease and Alzheimer’s disease; and Factor V Leiden is a gene mutation testthat strongly influences your risk of developing clots in your blood stream. It’s also important to look at a Cardiovascular Inflammation Profile that in-cludes two tests.

The Cardiac CRP test measures thelevel of inflammation in the body. Highinflammation significantly increasesthe risk of heart disease, diabetes, andmany other diseases. The Cardiac CRPlevel is an excellent predictor of heartdisease risk but can be elevated forother reasons as well.

The Lp-PLA2 test, also known as thePLAC test indicates higher risk for un-stable plaque and a greater tendencyfor the plaque to rupture. This testspecifically shows if you have inflam-mation in the artery wall associatedwith plaque buildup representing therisk of a heart attack or stroke.

Lastly I encourage everyone to test Ironand Ferritin– High levels of iron andthe storage form of iron, called ferritin, represent an increased risk for heartdisease and diabetes. Pay attention toyour iron level. If elevated it can be asignificant cause of diabetes and itscomplications!

I encourage you to take advantage ofthese heart tests by talking with ahealth professional who will take thetime to discuss each test with you andgive you natural solutions to addresseach area of risk identified. I have per-sonally had all these tests done on myself. For these tests I am very grateful,in that they gave me specific guidanceof how I could further optimize myhealth and greatly lower my risk of car-diovascular and other diseases.

As many of you know, I have been learning a lot about the role ouremotions and spirituality play in our lives, and it is just mind-bog-gling!

When I first started working in the health and fitness field I spent allof my time focusing on what my clients were eating and how theywere exercising. As I have evolved, I realize that all the kale andmarathons in the world can’t transform anyone’s health if you don’ttake care of the soul and the heart as well.

I was victim to going through the motions of life and not really pay-ing attention to my heart (emotions) and soul (spirituality). I thoughtit was enough to eat right, exercise as much as I could and go to Masson Sunday with the odd prayer in-between when things got rough.

Emotions? Feelings? They were just those wild swings I reacted to as Isaw fit in the moment - you know, yell at the kids, snap at your hus-band and push away anything too uncomfortable, because I didn’thave time to deal with it!

Yet, feelings are real and need our attention. Talking about feelingscan be a touchy thing. We all have them, and we don’t always givethem the attention they deserve. It’s too easy to stuff the unpleasantones and sometimes even push the good ones away, afraid of “jinx-ing” ourselves, afraid of being disappointed.

That was my life, and I thought I was healthy! I looked healthy. I wastrim and lean and by today’s standard I was doing great! But, I wasempty inside. I just didn’t know it.

I remember talking to a neighbor one morning and trying to describe

how I was feeling, and within a minute she had me diagnosed with abig spiritual void! That was a turning point, so thank you Amy:)

That started me on a journey of really exploring what my beliefs wereand how I wanted to relate to God. It also led me to understandingthe role our heart plays in our lives and our spirituality. If we suppressall our emotions, and have closed hearts, no amount of Sunday wor-ship will open us up to the wonders of God and his love for us.

The most important thing with feelings is to allow yourself to feelthem. How often have you heard the phrase “don’t be sad”, “don’t bemad”, don’t be afraid”?

It’s second nature…. I hear myself saying it to my kids and clients andhave to backtrack and say “cancel, cancel!” The only way feelings willgo away, is if you allow them to be felt. Pushing them away doesn’twork. Suppressing feeling can lead to weight gain, building resent-ment and bitterness in your heart, and even medical problems.

In my case, adult acne is a result of suppressing uncomfortable emo-tions I feel when I’m in conflict or out of alignment with people clos-est to me. I have an issue with my husband and I don’t say anythingbecause I don’t want a conflict. Then, I see the breakouts! This is myreminder to say what I need to say, and the breakouts calm downwithin hours. It took me only 14/15 years to figure this out LOL!

You deserve the best in life. A fully healthy person has a balancedmind, body, heart and soul. You can’t leave any aspect neglected with-out hurting yourself.

Much love and have a great month!

Naturopathic Treatment of the ThyroidBy Dr. Austin and the Prime Wellness Team

Ever feel consistently tired, cranky, shaky, or cold? Is it hard for you to loseweight? You may have an issue with your thyroid!

The thyroid is a gland located at the base of your neck. It produces hor-mones that control many metabolic processes in the body. The thyroidcan be affected by a multitude of factors, and thyroid issues are becomingincreasingly common.

Dr. Austin, a naturopathic doctor (ND), works frequently with patients todiagnose and treat thyroid disorders. We are among the best-traineddoctors in the world to address the complex set of problems that createsand results from issues with the thyroid. NDs are experts at evaluatingthe imbalances that may contribute to thyroid disorders and are able tohelp patients by treating and resolving the issues that ail them.

Many types of imbalances or issues can occur with the thyroid, includingthe under or over-production of thyroid hormones, immune attackagainst the thyroid, and even thyroid cancer. The most common thyroidimbalance is hypothyroidism, or the underproduction of hormones. Thismay be what is causing negative changes in your hair and skin, your me-tabolism and mood.

Hypothyroidism is a common disorder that is frequently missed or misdi-agnosed. This happens because screening tests are not extensive enoughto pick up an actual problem with thyroid hormone production. Most pa-tients have only had their TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) tested, butthis is not precise enough to accurately diagnose a thyroid issue. Simplymeasuring TSH alone is not enough.

The hormones T4 and T3 need to be tested in addition to accurately eval-uate thyroid hormone production. T4 is the least active hormone whenproduced by the thyroid, and it is converted to the more metabolically ac-tive T3 throughout the body. TSH is supposed to correlate with thyroidhormone levels in the blood, but unfortunately this is not always the case.

Nutrition, immune balance, hormone balance, stress, and other factorscan contribute to a disturbance in hormone production or the conversionof T4 to T3. The most common supplemental thyroid medication is com-posed of merely T4. This may not be helpful to a patient who cannotconvert correctly.

In addition, many, though not all, primary care doctors will base theirtreatment on lab test values and not on a patient’s actual symptoms. Many patients who are on thyroid medication may be on an incorrectdosage because of limited or incomplete testing.

Patients should also be advised not to self-diagnose or treat, as there aremany commonly recommended treatments, such as iodine, which maynot be appropriate in every situation, and certain thyroid disorders suchas Grave’s disease, which can be very serious and need to be managedvery carefully.

The good news is that with a complete, comprehensive naturopathic eval-uation, thyroid disorders and contributing factors can be adequately diag-nosed and treated with great success.

Prime Wellness in Solana Beach and Rancho Bernado solves thyroid issueswith a multi-faceted approach. As thyroid dysfunction is her speciality, Dr.Kelly Austin is able to take in the whole person and put together the puzzlepieces that compose each and every case. Each individual receives a treat-ment protocol that is personalized to him or her. We don't see patients as justlab test values and symptoms -- we understand that patients are real peoplewith real stories, goals, and needs.

With appropriate testing, nutritional or herbal support, dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, or proper medication, we can help our patients suffer-ing from thyroid disorders feel well and function optimally.
