Healthy AwarenessBy Jennifer McCormick, CCHt, HHP, CPT

Clients often tell me that they would like to be healthy. I then askwhat they mean by “healthy.” Is it a certain size? Shape? Mentality?Fitness level? Spirituality? Emotional well-being?

I believe that health is subjective; we are all truly unique. However, true vitality is achieved by integrating the body, mind, and spirit.Strengthening the whole person by increasing that which producesvitality and contentment is appropriate for each individual. It pro-duces a true awareness of our needs.

There are studies that demonstrate how thoughts, feelings, andemotions influence the physical body. A clear picture of thoughtsand emotions can be revealed by placing electrodes on a partici-pant’s body and then presenting pictures to record their brain wavepatterns and temperature. A fairly standard pattern shows that neg-ative thoughts and emotions adversely impact the body, while posi-tive thoughts and emotions favorably impact the body. Forinstance, prolonged stress has a physiological response in the bodywhich left unaddressed eventually manifests as physical dis-ease.Now more than ever, people are waking up to a new reality inwhich they have a choice to address physical disease through amyriad of holistic practices that address not only the physical ail-ment or symptoms, but the person as a “whole.”

We can no longer only address our physical health while disregard-ing our emotional health. For instance, maintaining unhappy, emo-tionally unhealthy relationships will have a physical effect on thebody no matter how many hours of exercise are logged. This pro-longed discontent will eventually manifest as physical symptomsand illness. Mental, emotional, spiritual and physical dis-satisfactionwill create dis-ease.

In order to improve our health, it is wise to focus on increasing thatwhich strengthens us, while decreasing that which weakens us. Oursouls crave nourishment through nurturing relationships, whole-some foods that fuel our bodies, movement and sound that createsharmony within, and spiritual connections, as well as mentally andemotionally satisfying thoughts and behaviors. Our souls tell uswhat we need–we just have to get clear enough to listen. Medita-tion and hypnosis allow us to feel deeply relaxed, surrounded by elements of nature to help quiet the chatter so we can hear thisguidance.

It’s beneficial to set aside fifteen minutes a day to meditate, to con-nect with that inner part of ourselves that knows what path to take.It could be as simple as spending time in nature, incorporating adaily walk, sitting at the beach, listening to soft music while breath-ing deeply. Doing activities that we enjoy while being mindful ofthe blessings they offer can lead to improved health.

Finding balance in our lives requires a conscious effort to recognizethe unconscious yearnings. Humanity is waking up and will cometo realize that all aspects of one’s life needs to be addressed andbalanced in order to truly be healthy.

If you are struggling to maintain your health, I offer customized fit-ness programs, hypnotherapy, reiki and nutritional consultations. Ifyou lack self-esteem or confidence, motivation or energy, or if youremotions are limiting your growth, hypnotherapy is a very effectivetool to move past these and many other issues. Repetitive behaviorsor thoughts, as well as subconscious thoughts and behaviors maybe blocking your optimum health. Looking at your health from aperspective of a “whole” person can shift your awareness. With abalanced holistic approach, you will then be able to answer and, more importantly, understand what makes you healthy.

For those seeking transformation of your mind, body and soul, pleasecontact Jennifer McCormick at 951-723-0925 or email [email protected].

Suffering and Still No Results? What happens when the brain misfires Fibromyalgia, Unresolved Chronic Pain, IBS, Tremors, Migraines, Dizziness, and other neurological disorders.

How does it all go wrong? The human brain is a complex machine that operates the functions ofeach and every single cell in our bodies. When our brain is function-ing properly, our body is functioning properly. But what happens ifyour brain starts functioning improperly? To answer that question isto answer the question: Why Did My Body Go Wrong?

You’ve been to the doctors, you’ve been to specialists and had testsconducted on you. Maybe you’ve been given drugs or surgery; andstill, your symptoms persist. You haven’t been given much informa-tion about your condition and you haven’t been given any answers byanyone that you have seen. You have gone through the system stillhave not received clear answers or the results you expected.

Yet, there are people who thought there was nothing they could do,no way out of the dark tunnel; they are now seeing the light at the endof the road. How is this possible? All of this is accomplished using apatient-centered diagnosis, state-of-the-art technological equipmentand a modern health discipline called Functional Neurology.

Patient-centered diagnoses are completely individualized and discoverthe roots of your symptoms. Rather than labeling the sources of yoursymptoms with unknown or unexplained phenomena, a patient-cen-tered diagnosis involves thorough and meticulous techniques thatidentify each of your symptoms systematically. The patient also seesthe results for themselves, not only because the doctor shows themwhat is happening; but also, because the treatments produce notice-able, positive results.

Where Do My Symptoms Come From? You have symptoms that disable you from living your life to thefullest; preventing you from living the way that you deserve. Yoursymptoms may be pain, migraines, fatigue, dizziness, inattention, de-pression, skin irritations, joint discomfort, irritability, memory loss, tremors, hearing loss, vision problems, intestinal disorders… the pointis that no matter what your particular symptoms may be, they haveworsened and you want to know why.

Brain cells communicate with electrical impulses and anything elec-trical can misfire, especially when exposed to harmful substances. Thehuman brain can even short circuit, as in the case of a seizure.

What you may not realize is that so many of the chronic ailments thatplague people today come from chronic misfiring of circuitry as thebrain attempts to communicate with and regulate the other organs inthe body. When the human wiring system is compromised, thehuman being is compromised. Proper communication cannot occurand this is what leads to organs and tissue going haywire. The result? You name it: autoimmune disorders, organ failure, chronic pain, fa-tigue, weakness, vertigo, metabolic issues, etc… the list is endless. Thechronic health issues of our time begin in the brain.

When the mechanism goes wrong it changes the whole world for thesufferer and it seems that it can’t be turned off.

This is a radical departure from treating symptoms, treating the under-lying causes rather than the symptoms forever.

Until recent breakthroughs in modern medicine and our understand-ing of brain functioning, our healthcare system has been entirely fo-cused on symptom management and disease management.Meanwhile, the physiology that led to the disease or chronic condi-tion is largely ignored and the underlying process is rarely, if ever ad-dressed.

Primary FoodsBy Dr. Mary O’DwyerOne of the concepts we studied at the Institute ofIntegrative Nutrition was Primary Foods. Very oftenwhen we think about a healthy lifestyle, ourmind goes to food and exercise and stops there. However, a fully balanced health plan includestaking care of the mind, body, heart and soul. That is where Primary Food comes in.

Primary foods are what really feed us: our spiri-tuality, our life's purpose, our physical activityand our relationships. I will focus on our rela-tionships in this edition, especially our relation-ships with ourselves.

Love is what makes the world go round, butsometimes we don't feel loved, we don't makethe people around us feel loved and we oftenforget to say those simple words, "I love you."

Why is that? I believe it could be because wedon't love ourselves fully. How often do you saythings to yourself that you wouldn't dream ofsaying to anyone else? How often do you criti-cize and berate yourself for your mistakes andshortcomings? Would you stay friends withsomeone who spoke to you this way?

Negative self-talk gets stored and remembered. We feel bad about ourselves, our self-esteemplummets and our confidence gets shattered. We measure our worth by valuing the opinionsof others, or by our productivity. We fill all ourtime with activities because the alternative¬–tobe alone with our ugly selves–is too frighteningto consider. We wind up trying to make our-selves feel better in other ways by exerting toomuch control over some aspect of our lives,over-eating, drinking more than is good for usand/or seeking short term pleasure to cope withlong term unhappiness.

In the past, I’ve been 100 percent guilty ofbeing extremely hard on myself, having unreal-istic expectations and totally neglecting myself. Islowly changed and the results are in: I am hap-pier, I sleep better, I am less attached to out-comes, I look and feel better, I am a better wife, mother, daughter, sister … I could go on, butyou get the picture.

I urge you to make time for yourself. When youput you first, you are sending the message thatyou are important. That you are worthy. Thatyou are deserving. If you are not ready and ableto do this for yourself, who will do it for you? Ifyou aren’t at your best, how can you be fully in-vested in any other relationship?

In the beginning you may feel silly or indulgenttaking 30 minutes to do something just foryourself, but trust me, after a few days of doingit you will get over that really fast. And yourfamily will probably thank you.

Here are a few suggestions of smallthings you can do to nurture yourself:

• Take an Epsom Salt bath. Add some bakingsoda and essential oil for added benefits

• Get a massage. I have two service providers Iwork with who have discounts for all my clientsand readers. Just email me and I’ll hook you up.

• Take up to 30 minutes a day to just sit. Nobook, no phone, no TV, no computer. Just you.Enjoy it!

• Be blind to your flaws. Look at yourself in themirror and look for the good things for achange.

• Be nice to yourself. Say something positive toyourself every single day.

Earth has recently ascended. In Novem-ber 2013, our beautiful planet rose.Mother Earth has been able to awakenand set herself free from the binds ofkarma by surrendering to the highest willof her heart and soul. Earth’s ascension

means she now holds a vibration of energy that contains far morelight within than ever before. She is currently changing and fine tun-ing herself to flow in perfect harmonic resonance with the Universe, the One, the Creator.

Due to this, everyone will be experiencing ascension symptoms on alllevels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Your system is re-booting, being tuned up or upgraded. Your body is detoxifying. Oldpatterns will start to fall away as you embody more light. As youmove through earth’s ascension process, there are periods where yourenergy and symptoms may become much more intense for severaldays or weeks at a time, then cease altogether or completely change. The process is different for everyone and can vary according to one'sindividual degree of awareness, personal vibration, spiritual practiceand purpose on the planet.

You contain Mother Earth’s conscious thoughts of willpower and de-termination to make major changes. You will feel a strong urgencyand need to make the deepest changes in your own life. You must lis-ten to your heart and truly let go of all that is out of alignment withyou. It will feel too uncomfortable to live upon earth otherwise. Yourinner changes will then bring about a strong desire to figure out yourlife purpose so you can make a difference on earth.

ASCENSION SYMPTOMS:

1. Sudden changes in body temperature, diet, and chemical intoler-ances. Frequent headaches, sinus issues, unusual skin changes. Clum-siness, dropping objects, dizziness or feeling ungrounded.

2. A sense of urgency like you are running out of time or that “some-thing is about to happen.” Inability to complete tasks. Frantic energy, panic attacks, racing or scattered thoughts, intense frustration, brainfog, confusion.

3. Sudden loss of identity and a calling to find your true self. Abruptchanges with job, friends, hobbies, interests, or strong urge to relo-cate. A deep longing to go “home” even though you may not knowwhere home is.

4. Changes in sleep patterns, waves of extreme fatigue or insomniathat come and go unexpectedly, waking up around 3 am, unusualdreams.

5. Changes in vision, catching glimpses of shadows, flashes of light, swirling forms of energy. Hearing tones and frequencies in your ears.

6. Time distortions, losing track of time, a sense that time is speedingup or slowing down. Physicality may feel unreal at times and exter-nal reality appears dreamlike at times.

7. Increased psychic awareness, sudden inspirations. Seeing recurringnumbers like 11:11. Feeling that you have a Divine purpose on theplanet. Profound feeling of an interconnectedness with all things.

You can speed up your own spiritual awakening process by being onthe path of ascension. The ultimate goal of the soul is to ascend, tobe in a continual state of enlightened consciousness with the Creator.Ascended masters are living master teachers who once lived on earthand ascended. You can connect with them and receive their teachingsthrough your own meditations. The shamans who work with the as-cended masters can connect you with them through shamanic jour-neys.

grains of flower pollen.

Complete Nutrition Bee pollen contains all the essential components to sustain life. The percentage of reju-venating elements in bee pollen remarkably exceeds those present in brewer's yeastand wheat germ. Bee pollen corrects deficient or unbalanced nutrition, so common inthe customs of our present-day civilization of consuming incomplete foods–often withadded chemical ingredients–which expose us to physiological problems as various asthey are numerous.

Nutrient deficiencies and all the health problems they cause are recog-nized worldwide as a growing problem. Because of the valuable,life-sustaining nutrients found in bee pollen, it is being used onan ever-larger scale for human nourishment and health.

Bee-gathered pollens are rich in proteins, free amino acids, and vitamins, including B-complex and folic acid. Accord-ing to researchers at the Institute of Apiculture, Taranov,Russia, "Honeybee pollen is the richest source of vitaminsfound in Nature in a single food.”

Bee pollen is a complete food and contains many elementsthat products of animal origin do not possess. Bee pollen isricher in protein than any other animal source. It containsmore amino acids than beef, eggs, or cheese of equal weight.

Medical Miracles Researchers have demonstrated that there is a substance in bee pollen that in-hibits the development of numerous harmful bacteria. Experiments have shown beepollen contains an antibiotic factor effective against salmonella and some strains ofbacteria. On the clinical level, studies have shown that a regulatory effect on intestinalfunction can be attributed to bee pollen. The presence of a high proportion of cellu-lose and fiber in pollen, as well as the existence of antibiotic factors, all contribute toan explanation for this efficacious effect.

Bee Products Also Treats Allergies! Pollen is also a remedy for hay fever and allergies. However, to be effective, it must betaken for at least six weeks before the season begins, and then continued throughoutthe season.

Bee pollen has been effectively used through the ages to rid allergy sufferers of their af-flictions. This technique, called “desensitization,” was developed at St. Mary's HospitalMedical School in London. The treatment consists of administering small amounts ofthe allergen to stimulate the patient's own immune system to produce antibodies thatwill eliminate the allergic reaction. Desensitization works like a vaccination does againstchildhood diseases.

Bee Products and Physical Activity The British Sports Council recorded increases in strength of as high as 40 to 50 percentin those taking bee pollen regularly. Even more astounding, the British Royal Societyhas reported height increases in adults who take pollen. Antii Lananaki, coach of theFinnish track team that swept the Olympics in 1972, revealed, "Most of our athletestake pollen food supplements. Our studies show it significantly improves their perform-ance. There have been no negative results since we have been supplying pollen to ourathletes."

Bee Pollen and Weight ControlBee pollen works wonders in a weight control or weight stabilization regimen by cor-recting a possible chemical imbalance in body metabolism that may be involved in ei-ther abnormal weight gain or loss. The normalizing and stabilizing effects of thisperfect food from the bees are phenomenal.

In weight loss programs, bee pollen stimulates the metabolic processes. It speedscaloric burn by lighting and stoking the metabolic fires. Honeybee pollen is coming tobe recognized as Nature's true weight-loss food. Bee pollen is a low-calorie food con-taining only ninety calories per ounce (an ounce is about two heaping tablespoons).

Bee pollen offers 15 percent lecithin by volume. Lecithin is a substance that helps dis-solve and flush fat from the body. This is one reason why bee pollen lowers low-densitylipoproteins (LDL) surer and faster than any other food, while helping increase thehelpful high-density lipoproteins (HDL), which science says protect against cholesteroland heart disease.

By boosting the value of each nutrient present in the food you eat, bee pollen alsoeliminates cravings. Its natural phenylalanine content acts as an appetite suppressant.Phenylalanine is a natural amino acid that the body requires. It acts on your appestat, the control center that signals fullness and hunger, so you won't want to eat as muchwhen you take bee pollen regularly. When you are overweight, phenylalanine exerts anatural appetite suppressant effect. When you need to gain weight, the phenylalaninein bee pollen works in reverse.

Health and Beauty Basic beauty begins with the glow of good health, which shines fromwithin. A scrubbed and radiant complexion transforms any woman (orman) into a singularly attractive person. On the other hand, dull, muddyskin, often caused by poor nutrition or personal hygiene, can detract fromeven the most attractive. Studies have shown that unhealthy or aging skincan be dramatically improved by the consumption of honeybee pollen.

When bee pollen is included daily in the diet, it not only gives you theglow of health and aids in safe, permanent weight loss, it can also beblended into seemingly "magic potions" to smooth, soothe, and rejuvenateevery inch of the outside of your body. Several relatively inexpensive mix-tures of hive products, used externally, can revitalize and rejuvenate the

complexion, and may even eliminate acne.

Longevity and the Aging Process According to G. Liebold, a holistic physician and psycholo-

gist of Karlsruhe, Germany, "Bee pollen is an excellentprophylaxis and therapeutic treatment against all theprecocious symptoms of old age. It should be consid-ered a universal geriatric treatment in the form of anatural remedy.

"Bee pollen causes an increase in physical and mentalabilities, especially of concentration and memory ability,

activates sluggish metabolic functions, and strengthensthe cardiovascular and respiratory systems. This natural nu-

trient from the bees removes the causes of cardiovascularsymptoms, such as arteriosclerosis, cerebral insufficiency, and

other pathological conditions resulting from a disease, injury, ther-apy, or other trauma. It prevents nutrient deficiency during old age, preg-nancy, and the lactation period. Bee pollen accelerates convalescence afterserious illness and/or an operation, increases the body's physical defensivepowers of the immune system, stimulates mental and psychological resist-ance to stress, and creates a harmonizing of vegetative and hormonal dis-orders."

How to Use Bee Pollen Each golden granule is densely packed with active enzymes, just aboutevery nutrient that has a name, and some elements that science has notyet identified or labeled. Your digestive system may not be accustomed tosuch intensely rich food. If you are a beginner, introduce bee pollen intoyour diet slowly, a granule or two at a time. Don't cook with the granulesor add powdered granules to anything that requires heat. Heat destroysthe active enzymes and reduces the nutrient value.

Before taking a full dose of pollen it is very important to test for a possibleextreme allergic reaction by ingesting just one pellet. Then gradually buildup over a week or so to the correct dose.

The optimal dose of pollen varies with individual needs. For allergy preven-tion all that is required is about one teaspoon per day. You should gradu-ally increase your dose to one tablespoon. It will give about five grams ofprotein which is a good addition if you already have some proteins in yourmeal.

Since your pollen is really a type of food and there are some fats in it, it isimportant to keep it refrigerated.

Concerns and Safety of Bee PollenBee pollen is POSSIBLY SAFE for most people when used for up to 30 days. There is also some evidence that taking 2 tablets twice daily of a specificcombination product that contains 6 mg of royal jelly, 36 mg of bee pollenextract, and bee pollen plus 120 mg of pistil extract per tablet for up totwo months seems to be safe.

The biggest safety concerns are allergic reactions. Bee pollen can cause se-rious allergic reactions in people who are allergic to pollen. Symptoms caninclude itching, swelling, shortness of breath, light-headedness, and severewhole-body reactions (anaphylaxis).

There have also been isolated reports of other serious side effects such asliver and kidney damage. But it is not known if bee pollen or some otherfactor was truly responsible for these effects.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Taking bee pollen is POSSIBLY UNSAFE dur-ing pregnancy. There is some concern that bee pollen might stimulate theuterus and threaten the pregnancy. Don’t use it. It’s also best to avoidusing bee pollen during breast-feeding. Not enough is known about howbee pollen might affect the infant.

What is Prediabetes and How Does It Affect My Health?by Dr. Wes YoungbergBill was a fit man for his age and appearing to be in good health. Hesaid, “I’m just retiring, so I want to make sure I’m properly evaluatingmy health.” He came to see me to get comprehensive, blood-based lab-oratory testing. As I evaluated his medical records, I noticed that in pastyears his fasting blood sugars had been running a little high. They werenot in the pre-diabetic range but were above the optimal range of 70–85;they were running just above 90.

“I think one of the best tests you could do is a four-hour glucose toler-ance test,” I suggested.

The test came back a few days later, showing a two-hour blood sugarwell above 140, indicating advanced prediabetes. Bill wasn’t overweightand had been exercising three to four times a week, so these resultscaused him to reevaluate his health.

“Clearly,” he said, “what I have been doing is not enough to overcomethe natural genetic tendency I have toward prediabetes or diabetes.”

So at the next appointment, he came in with his list of many questionsand said, “OK, what do I need to do that will be enough to reverse thisprediabetes?”

So he went through our twelve-week program designed to optimizeblood sugars and correct the underlying causes of his health risk.Through the process, he learned simple strategies that, when broughttogether, helped him totally reverse his prediabetes and several otherhealth problems he didn’t think would ever improve. One of the thingsBill learned in the program was that the timing of exercise is really im-portant. Remember, Bill was lean and fit—he already exercised morethan most men. His blood sugars, before meals, were essentially fine—but not his blood sugars after meals. So he began employing two pri-mary strategies: to note what kinds of meals caused the biggest spike inhis blood sugars, and to note the time of his exercise that had the great-est impact on lowering his blood sugar spike after meals.

Bill learned that exercising immediately after a meal had the potentialto lower his blood sugars anywhere from one to three points for everyminute he exercised. For instance, if someone’s blood sugar is typicallyninety points higher than it should be one or two hours after a meal, but now they go out right after eating and exercise moderately to brisklyfor thirty minutes, there is a good chance they could lower their bloodsugar (at three points for every minute of exercise) by up to ninetypoints, bringing their high blood sugar down to a much healthier level.

Another thing Bill recognized was that he needed to learn how to bal-ance his meals. He needed to know how to use whole plant-based foodsthat incorporated nuts and seeds in moderate amounts, with theirhealthy fats and proteins. This would slow down the absorption of sugarfrom his meal, so his sugar would not spike nearly as much. He alsoneeded to learn how to choose healthy starches. Not all starchy complex

carbohydrates are healthy starches—they need to be unprocessed, high infiber and full of nutrients before theycan help control blood sugar levelsand ultimately, the health of ourheart and blood vessels.

Bill’s story is one of many examplesshowing the importance of propertesting and how it guides us in mak-ing simple changes that can trans-form our health and greatly lower ourrisk for future disease. That is why Ibelieve one of the best health assess-ment tests available today is the 4-hour oral Glucose Tolerance Test(GTT for short). Typically, only thefasting and 2-hour glucose levels arenow tested in the GTT. But the mostlikely time to see an elevated bloodsugar (glucose) is at the 1-hour pointafter drinking 75 grams of Glucola (astandard carbonated glucose drinkused to see how high blood sugargoes). So I always add the 1-hour glu-cose test to the GTT and also checkthe 3- and 4-hour blood sugar toevaluate tendency to low bloodsugar, as well. In addition, I alwaysadd the fasting and 2-hour insulintest. Even in patients who have com-pletely optimal blood sugar re-sponses to the GTT, the insulin levelsare among the first risk factors to in-dicate a risk to health.

While testing insulin levels is notcurrently part of standard recom-mendations, I learned the value oftesting insulin several decades agoby paying attention to the advice ofDr. Nancy Bohannon, a preventiveendocrinologist, director of the Car-diovascular Risk Reduction Programat St. Luke's Hospital in San Fran-cisco, and professor at UCSF. In1991, Dr. Bohannan, who sub-spe-cializes in diabetes prevention andmanagement, gave a lecture sent outto family practice physicians in“Family Practice Audio Digest.” Aspart of the talk, she explained howthe fasting insulin should always be

including dopamine, norepinephrine and acetylcholine. Once again, conventionaltreatment of this disorder often involves the administration of a medication that al-ters transport of these neurotransmitters within the brain such as Adderall and Strat-tera.

The use of pharmaceutical intervention can be successful in some patients, however,we are all individuals and may not all fit into the same box. Rather then changing thebody’s use of amino acids through altered transport, one alternative is to supplementamino acid precursors to neurotransmitters. While amino acid supplementation forthe purpose of replenishing neurotransmitters has been a controversial topic in the

medical community for many years now, in clinical practice, I have seen dra-matic responses to oral amino acid supplementation for some of the above-mentioned diseases.

Typically, amino acids can be obtained through proper diet in a healthy in-dividual. However, in the presence of disease, such as depression or addic-tion, it may be difficult to obtain proper amino acid levels through dietalone. Therefore, we may need to supplement amino acid precursors in a

concentrated form to achieve proper circulating levels that can impact our health.

By supplementing precursor amino acids such as tryptophan, tyrosine and glutamine,we are feeding our bodies with the building materials needed to make the neurotrans-mitters serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and GABA, among others. For this con-version to take place, however, we also need coenzymes and cofactors such as vitaminC, folate, and SAMe which may be safely administered through an IV by a qualifiedhealth care professional.

In the context of addiction, particularly to drugs and alcohol, an individual may havesevere imbalances in their neurotrans-mitter levels resulting in symptoms ofdepression, anxiety, insomnia, and jit-teriness among others. This is oftencompounded by overt vitamin andmineral imbalances and poor absorp-tion of nutrients through the intestines, causing problems in the body’s innateability to form neurotransmitters. Bysupplementing amino acids along withvitamins, minerals, and coenzymes, wecan often reestablish proper levels of cir-culating neurotransmitters, thus mini-mizing or potentially eliminating sideeffects of withdrawal.

Often in the treatment of drug and alco-hol addiction medications for depres-sion, anxiety, and insomnia areprescribed to quell these symptoms.Through altering brain chemistry thesepharmaceuticals can be effective, how-ever, the medicines themselves are af-fecting the body’s own ability toproduce and properly utilize neuro-transmitters. By supplementing aminoacids and supporting the body’s abilityto utilize them through IV nutrition, ex-ercise and adrenal support, we helpmove the individual closer to a balancedstate of health rather then simply sup-pressing symptoms.

Neurotransmitter imbalances have beenlinked to several diseases including Parkin-son’s, depression, insomnia, AttentionDeficit Hyperactivity Disorder, anxiety, memory loss, weight gain, and addictive dis-orders. These neurotransmitters are formed inour bodies from amino acid precursors. Amino acids arethe building blocks of proteins. Without the proper levels ofthese amino acids, we cannot survive, as proteins are responsiblefor the structure of our cells in addition to their function.

In the conventional management of diseases, such as depression and anxiety dis-orders, patients are often prescribed medications such as SSRIs (Celexa, Prozac andZoloft) or SNRIs (Effexor, Pristiq and Cymbalta) to increase circulating levels of neu-rotransmitters. By increasing the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, they are able to bind to receptors leading to changes in mental function and stabi-lization of many mood disorders.

There have been deficiencies in several neurotransmitters associated with ADHD

less than 10 microIU/mL.

Because of my willingness to listen to one of the world’s leading expertsand not simply wait the average of twenty-five to thirty years it usuallytakes for good evidence to be fully accepted by the average clinician,I’ve been able to effectively counsel thousands of patients as to their fu-ture health risk and how to transform that risk through comprehensivelifestyle medicine. Why is this important? Because having a high in-sulin level predicts a three-fold increase in risk toward developing heartdisease. In addition, elevated blood insulin is a major contributor to thedevelopment of high blood pressure and is closely associated with in-creased prostate, breast, and colon cancer risk.

Now, back to Bill’s story. Once we learned that Bill had advanced predi-abetes, I discussed the relationship between blood sugars, insulin, andblood pressure with him. For many years he had struggled with hyper-tension, even while on medications for his blood pressure. Armed withthis new information, Bill was eager to make the adjustments in hislifestyle to improve his liver and muscle sensitivity to insulin. By adding

after-meal exercise, balancing his meals, choosing the best foods, andtaking nutritional supplements that fit his risk factors, he was able tonormalize his blood sugars, insulin levels, and blood pressure.

For the first time in many years Bill’s family doctor was able to discon-tinue his blood pressure medication. As long as Bill follows what he haslearned, his quality of health will be greatly improved. With appropri-ate testing and tailored lifestyle-medicine strategies, he has normalizedthe insulin resistance responsible for his elevated blood sugar and bloodpressure. Bill has actually reversed many of the risk factors associatedwith accelerated aging. We also tested and addressed the PLAC test aswell as genetic tests that predicted specific heart risk and helped us de-velop a personalized plan for optimizing Bill’s health. His challenge willbe to stay focused and not let a busy life distract him from taking careof his health.

What’s Been Missing from your Workout?

Have you ever wondered why you can workout, eat right and still not lose weight? Or youare constantly feeling rundown and tired butyou don’t understand why? We do!

At Alterna Health and Wellness Center we un-derstand that to achieve true wellness you haveto work on the whole person, not just diet andexercise. So instead of offering one or two as-pects of health and fitness and expecting youto manage the rest on your own, we’ve devel-oped a complete wellness program. We haveroutines for every ability, from the wheelchairbound to professional athletes and everyone inbetween. In as little as 30-60 min a day, threetimes per week, you can achieve your desiredresults. Here are a few of the things we offerand why we think they are so important.

Chronic Stress: The Fitness KillerWe understand the importance of dealing withstress. Here is a brief summary of what hap-pens in your body, and why managing yourstress is so important. When you encounterany stressor, physical or emotional, your bodygoes into what is known as fight or flight. Theresult is an increase in heart rate and bloodpressure, blood-glucose levels, and muscles ten-sion. “Nonessential” systems like your diges-tion and immune system shut down to allowmore energy for emergency functions.

This is a wonderful defense response, but it issupposed to be temporary. Unfortunately, dueto an on-the-go lifestyle and the constantbuild-up of negative stressors, which I will ex-

plain later, you spend more time in fight orflight than not. This means increased bloodpressure and blood glucose levels, tense mus-cles poor digestion and a weakened immunesystem. Do you see the problem? If your im-mune system is compromised and you cannotdigest your food correctly or assimilate yournutrients, what is going to happen?

The bottom line: If you don’t manage your stress levels, it doesnot matter how well you eat or how much youexercise you are leaving yourself open to dis-ease. We have a system to manage your stressthat does not require you to make drasticchanges to your lifestyle. Instead, it changeshow your body reacts to the stress.

SpectraVision technology is a non-cognitivebiofeedback device that measures and maps theflow of energy in the body from a number ofdifferent perspectives. The human body is anenergetic organism, and the balanced flow ofelectrons through the body informs optimalhealth. When vital life force energy is used forstress management, or dealing with negativestressors (such as food or substance sensitivi-ties, on-going emotional trauma or ongoingphysical symptoms), less energy is available tomaintain deeper degrees of homeostasis.

Stress creates interferences with metabolicprocesses, which in turn uses up vital force en-ergy and lowers the overall electrical flowwithin the body. The loss of energy created bycontinually managing toxic burdens eventuallyweakens defenses, causing impaired healingand reduced immunity. In other words, youcan unlearn the learned response and reducethe effects of negative stressors on your system. This is something that everyone can benefitfrom; I have personally seen some incredible

Do You Have Healthy Hair?By Lena Marie

With so many hair care products on the market it’s pretty tough to know whichproducts are actually healthy for your hair and which ones just claim to be.

What exactly is healthy hair? As in most things, balance is key. Hair and skin each have what is called a “pHlevel.” The normal pH level for hair and skin is between 4.5 and 5.5. In order forhair to be healthy, the pH level needs to be kept at its normal level. The best wayto do this is to be aware of the products you are using to care for your hair andskin. My favorite hair care line is “Enjoy” because it is designed and produced tobalance the hair and skin’s natural pH level. This includes shampoo, conditionerand styling products.

Many people think that baby shampoo is best to use on their hair. They assumethat because it’s gentle on babies’ eyes it must be best for their hair as well. Soshouldn’t it be good for everyone? The answer is, “no,” it’s actually not the bestfor you OR the baby. Baby shampoo actually raises the pH level of your hair andskin causing it to be dry. Baby shampoo’s claim to fame is “no more tears.” Butthe reason for this is because our eyes have a pH level of 7.2 to 7.8 and the babyshampoo is made with the same pH level. A pool man’s goal is to keep the poolwater at these levels as well for the same reason: so that when we open our eyesunder water it won’t sting. Bottom line: A good pool man and baby shampoowill keep your eyes from stinging, but it won’t keep your hair and skin from dry-ing out!

You’ve probably heard about “keratin” being good for your hair. Keratin is actu-ally what hair is made of and also what is used to reconstruct or repair hair. Thereare many products on the market with keratin on the label–this can be deceiving. The reason is that some manufacturers use keratin from animal hair instead ofhuman hair. The Enjoy line of products use human keratin and they list it on theirlabel. Human hair keratin has a molecular weight of 150 to 300. Animal keratinhas a much higher molecular weight, and anything higher than 500 cannot pen-etrate the cuticle layer of human hair. Those products simply coat or weigh downthe outer layer of your hair, or merely rinse right off and go down the drain. ButEnjoy products are made to penetrate the cuticle layer which is where it does themost good. The only way to repair hair is with hair, but since we are humans itneeds to be with human hair. If you were getting a skin graft you wouldn’t usepigskin would you?

Talk to your stylist about a good hair care regimen for you. You invest time andmoney on your precious locks so it only makes sense to follow it up with goodproducts you can use at home. Remember, your hair is your crown and when itshines so do you… “Enjoy” it!

Succinic Acid: A natural dietarysupplement to treathot flashes

By Gluten Free Remedies

Because women live for muchlonger than they did 100 years ago, women now spend much moretime in menopause and post-menopause. Menopausal symptomscan persist for weeks, months, oryears, and severity varies greatlyamong women. As estrogen levelsdecline, vasomotor symptoms–in-cluding hot flashes and nightsweats–may also occur. Up to 85%of women have hot flashes withwidely varying intensity and fre-quency. This can set up a dominoeffect where the night sweats inter-fere with sleep, leading to exhaus-tion, then to irritability, and finallyto adverse effects on mood.

Hormone replacement, in the formof estrogen/progestin therapy, be-came the standard treatment forwomen to prevent postmenopausaldisorders. More recent studies have

shown that long-term use is nolonger recommended, and short-term use is preferred for controllingmenopausal symptoms. Most ex-perts recommend discontinuingtherapy after five years, and manywomen are now searching for alter-natives.

A natural treatment forsymptoms associated withmenopause

Succinic Acid works by enhancingcommunication between the hypo-thalamus and the mind. This, inturn, “normalizes” the performanceof the ovaries and adrenal glandsand promotes hormone and en-zyme production, resulting in alle-viating menopausal symptoms.

Succinic Acid or amber acid is a di-carboxylic acid and is an essentialcomponent of the Krebs cycle, akey metabolic pathway regulatingthe respiratory chain and mito-chondria.

Succinic Acid expresses variousbiologic activities: • Normalizes bone mass• Stabilizes mood

Tired of searching for effective supplements?

• Reduces fatigue • Improves brain performance • Eases perimenopausal hot flashes • Accelerates iron absorption• Optimizes estrogen metabolism

Potential side effects:• Nausea• Abdominal pain

Potential drug interactions:• Coumadin• Fludrocortisone• Spironolactone• ACE inhibitors (Enalapril,Ramipril, Quinapril, Lisinopril, Be-nazepril, Fosinopril )

Relative contraindications:• Chronic anticoagulation therapy• Pregnancy• Lactation

Dosage information:The recommended standard dose ofSuccinic Acid is 500 or 1000 mgtaken twice a day. It has been de-scribed that patients with chronicinflammatory or autoimmune dis-eases may benefit from muchhigher doses of 10,000 mg or even40,000 mg a day. Doses above 2000mg a day should be administeredunder strict physician’s supervision.

We each have the ability to reach higher levels of good feelings. Disappoint-ments in the past might have anchored the idea that disappointments are nor-mal, even to be expected. Instead, challenge yourself to see with renewedinsight. Called reframing in psychology, here are examples of how to see from a different point of view. Change how you look at things and things will look different!

1. Accept painful emotions, it’s part of being human. Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar teaches Harvard’s most popular class on Positive Psychol-ogy. He suggests that by giving ourselves permission to feel the full gamut ofemotions, we open ourselves to positive emotions as well. Be the witness toyour feelings, and you will feel growth and expansion.

2. Fear of failing Many people have a fear of failing because of what others might think. Raiseyour self-esteem and become less concerned about what other peoplethink about you. Take risks in small, incremental steps. You willfeel empowered and triumphant.

3. Change your routine and you allow a newperson to emergeDo one thing at a time, be less busy, do whatyou do slowly and deliberately. Leave spacein your schedule for the unexpected.Allow five minutes or more to do noth-ing. Just breathe and enjoy being alive. You will feel appreciation.

4. Forgive and let goNotice the gap between how youwant to feel and what you are actually feeling in the moment. Decide if you areready to let go of those feelings, and when. You may need to do this in stages, gaining greater release each time. You will feel freedom and clarity.

5. Move your body Research shows thirty to forty minutes of exercise three times a week is equivalentto some of the most powerful psychiatric drugs dealing with depression and anxi-ety. Walk, dance, ride a bike. You will invite natural endorphins and feel gen-uinely happy and restored.

6. Be the rock star of your world“Whatever your hands are given to do, do with all your might.” Eccliastes 9:10.Give the fullness of your attention to whatever it is you do, and keep aiminghigher. Focus ten minutes daily on one thing you want to improve. Your life willbe lived for a purpose - on purpose. You will feel passion.

7. Don’t look to your right or to your left. The intensity of competition can get in your way and cause detrimental stressand strain. Be better than your own expectations. “Don’t bother to be betterthan your contemporaries…be better than yourself.” William Faulkner. You willfeel victorious.

8. Be calm and determinedMove steadily toward your dreams without a restless impa-

tience to leap from one ambition to another. Allow yournervous system to settle down and results will come as

you gather momentum. You will feel centered andoptimistic

9. Develop the full force of your personality. Build your personality by banishing shyness at anyage. Reach out, find others with a common inter-

est, learn to express yourself in writing, or publicspeaking. You will feel increased confidence and

self-esteem.

10. Discover the miracle of gratitudeReplace negative thoughts and mental imaging with thank-

fulness. You will break the bonds that held you hostage to oldwounds and emotions. Your heart will swell, and you will feel ap-

preciation and compassion.

On the 17th of July in 1990 Proclamation 6158 was written byGeorge Bush and the decade was appropriately named: “The Decadeof the Brain” and allowed for furthering our understanding of thehuman brain: how it functions, why it dysfunctions and, most im-portantly, solutions to its dysfunctions.

The Decade of the Brain allowed for over $1.5 billion to be investedin active brain research. As a result, researching the brain has beenconducted pioneered by world class researchers and scientists thatcontinue to delve into the mechanisms that operate health.

Brain-Based Neurological TreatmentsThe new treatments provided by the advancements of FunctionalNeurology are changing the way that the medical community viewschronic pain; most importantly: how it should be treated.

The contemporary approach of Functional Neurology does not focuson symptom management. Instead, it concentrates on identifyingproblems with causal mechanisms through the neurological commu-nication of the wiring system and between the brain and the sys-tems, and then systematically treats to restore neuro-visceralhomeostasis.

Some of the symptoms and conditions that are treatable using thesenew methods of diagnosis and restoration are: fibromyalgia, chronicfatigue, chronic back and neck pain, restless leg syndrome, mi-graines, difficulty breathing, hormone imbalance, memory problems, insomnia, peripheral neuropathy, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, depres-sion, anxiety, and various neurological disorders; including dizzinessand vertigo.

What Does it feel like when Brain Misfires? The body shuts down with an on-going sickness that may be de-scribed as anxiety or nerve disorder; chronic widespread pain… evenin the hands and feet. The sufferer can experience insomnia, or wak-ing up a certain hour each night and not able to fall back asleep;shortness of breath, and sometimes even forgetting to breathe.

It’s like everything goes haywire; continuous pain back and neck painthat’s truly never ending. Along with the body shutting down, thereis difficulty in processing the oxygen that needs to get to the brain.Disruption of the brain’s electrical vitality also causes fatigue andmany neurological disorders too lengthy to list.

Suffering and Still No Results? What happens when the brain misfires Continued from page 5

You diet, you exercise, but you are still struggling to lose those extra pounds.Sometimes your body need a little boost to release that unwanted weight. One way to do this is by the cleansing of toxins that are causing it to storefat and tax the metabolism. Just like the old tradition of “spring cleaning”to rid a home of junk, your body needs a time to cleanse and rid itself fromyears of unhealthy clutter.

There are many ways to detoxify. Choosing steps that gradually detoxify isnot only safer but helps develop some life-long habits that will keep yourbody looking and feeling its best.

Step One:Eliminate the foods that are harming your body (sugar, processed food, gluten, soft drinks, unhealthy fats, etc.) and replace them with whole foodssuch as organic vegetables and fruits, legumes, whole grains, healthy oilsthat are high in essential fatty acids, and lean proteins (organic meats andfish). Whole foods support the body by providing the necessary nutrientsand enzymes that are not found in processed food. These nutrients willbegin the detoxification process. In addition, a diet rich in whole foods willnaturally help maintain a healthy weight.

Step Two:Take herbal supplements that assist in the detoxification process. There aremany available, and an herbalist can assist you in choosing what is right foryou. Triphala is an Ayurvedic herbal blend that is safe for most to use andwill help your body eliminate toxins. Also, apple or citrus pectin has a nat-ural ability to remove heavy metals and other toxins from the body.

Step Three:Take an Epsom Salt Bath. Hot water draws toxins out of the body and to theskin’s surface, and while the water cools the toxins are pulled from the skin.Epsom Salt (magnesium sulfate) helps keep your bodily functions runningsmoothly. When Epsom Salt is absorbed through the skin, it assists in draw-ing toxins from the body, reduces swelling and relaxes muscles. Taking thistime to de-stress can reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) which can inhibitweight loss and actually increase belly fat.

Step Four:Sweat out the toxins. Infrared Sauna Therapy can remove toxins by sweat-ing them out. Our skin is the largest organ of elimination. Research hasshown that the body sweats out toxic substances, including heavy metals. It is important to maintain proper hydration during this process, because themore you safely sweat, the more toxins you will release from your body. Ahalf-hour Infrared Therapy session can burn up to 600 calories, which canalso aid in your weight loss.

Step Five:Exercise regularly. Most forms of exercise assist in the elimination processesof the body. An excellent way to detoxify while burning calories is to exer-cise on a Whole Body Vibration Plate. Not only does this type of workoutbuild strength and increase metabolism, it also detoxifies your internal or-gans and cells.

It is recommended that clients combine a Whole Body Vibration workoutfollowed by 30 minutes in an Infrared Sauna. Using the Whole Body Vibra-tion Therapy in conjunction with the Infrared Sauna will make the benefitsof each machine show up faster. Both machines help with weight loss, re-moving toxins, reducing cellulite, helping muscles tighten, and so muchmore!

The benefits of detoxifying go way beyond weight loss: your general health, energy, and overall body and mind will receive a much needed break fromthe harmful toxins plaguing you daily. Done safely, a detox will leave youfeeling and looking your best!

It’s as Organic, Earth-Friendly & “Locally Grown” as you can get!

It’s official… Spring is here!By Andy Grisole

We have our four seasons due to the 23½ degree tilt of Earth’s axis.As of 9:57 AM on March 20 the equator was directly facing the Sun,giving us equal amounts (12 hours each) of daylight and night. Fromthis point on the days will get progressively longer until June 21st,the summer solstice, when we’ll have 14 hours and 18 minutes ofsunlight. Not only will the days be getting longer, they’ll be gettingwarmer.

Nothing loves long warm days more than the vegetables of summer.Tomatoes, basil, peppers, cucumbers, eggplant and zucchini are justa sample of what can be grown starting right now and they’ll produceall through the summer. And those wonderful vegetables never tastebetter than when they come from your own backyard garden. Oneof the many great things about having your own garden is the amaz-ing variety of vegetables that are just not available in your local gro-cery store. For example, one seed catalog has well over two hundredtomato varieties (so many that they group them by color). Anotherhas peppers of varying heat from all over the world. There eggplantsof every shape and color and lettuces of various sizes, textures, col-ors and tastes that will make salads an adventure, maybe even a maincourse. In addition to taste and variety, the nutritional value of veg-etables from your backyard garden is higher than the same vegetablesfrom the grocery store. A study by The Institute of Food Researchshows vegetables can lose up to 45 percent of their nutritional valuebetween being picked and landing on a grocery shelf.

So get your vegetable garden going now! And if you don’t have thetime or know how, give us a call.

Girasole Backyard Gardens will design andinstall a garden that is tailored to the needsof your family, and do it affordably. Natural amendments, rather than chemical fertilizers, are used tobuild the soil, which in turn feeds the plants. Crops are rotated todifferent sections of the garden year to year to reduce the natu-

rally occurring pests that would otherwise build up in thesoil. Companion planting is used to encourage ben-

eficial pollinator and predator insects to visit yourgarden. And natural pest control methodsrather than chemicals are used should

the pests get out of hand.

Treating Hot Flashes the Natural WayBy Dr. Alexander ShikhmanHot flashes (also known as vasomotor symptoms) are defined as a sudden feelingof warmth affecting face, neck and chest, which is typically associated with thechanging hormone levels around menopause. Hot flashes can also cause profusesweating, rapid heartbeat and last from several minutes up to an hour. The hot-flash event may be repeated a few times a week or every few minutes through-out the day. Hot flashes may begin to appear several years before menopausestarts and last for years afterwards. Severe hot flashes can cause insomnia whichin turn can affect mood, impair concentration, and cause other physical prob-lems. Up to 85% of women have hot flashes with widely varying intensity andfrequency.

Although in most women hot flashes occur spontaneously, some women reporttriggers that affect the frequency and/or severity of hot flashes. These include al-cohol, caffeinated beverages, hot drinks, hot and spicy food, hot weather, andemotional stress.

The exact nature of hot flashes is still poorly understood. Presumably, the primarycause of hot flashes is a declining level of estrogen. However, the direct trigger-ing mechanism of hot flashes is the impairment of estrogen-dependent tempera-ture regulation in a region of the brain known as the hypothalamus and pituitarygland.

Typical therapies of hot flashes include:

1. Lifestyle modification

Lifestyle modification is the first step in managing menopausal symptoms.Women who are overweight with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30kg/m2 are more than twice as likely to experience moderate to severe hot flashescompared to women whose BMI is less than 25 kg/m2. Cigarette smoking alsoincreases the frequency and severity of hot flashes. In addition, regular aerobicexercise and balanced diet also help in dealing with hot flashes.

2. Traditional western therapy

Hormone replacement therapyHormone therapy is very effective for treating hot flashes. The best time to usehormone therapy is when menopausal symptoms start. Using the lowest effectivedose for the shortest duration is the best approach. The duration of treatmentshould be limited to about five years. Longer duration treatment is associatedwith increased risk of breast cancer, stroke, and dementia, as well as other poten-tially serious short-term and long-term risks. When discontinuing hormone ther-apy, taper off over several months to reduce discontinuation symptoms.

Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERM)SERMs are a category of drugs that act selectively as agonists or antagonists onthe estrogen receptors throughout the body. A typical example of SERM is ta-

moxifen, a drug used in the treatment of some types of breast cancer.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI)SSRIs are a class of antidepressants most commonly used in the treatment of de-pression, and some personality disorders. They have been found to be efficientin alleviating hot flashes. However, their administration is associated with quite afew side effects. In addition, they carry an addictive potential.

3. Complementary therapy

In general, complementary therapy can be as effective as traditional westerntherapy for hot flash control but with fewer side effects.

The typical complementary remedies useful for hot flash control include:Phytoestrogens or "Plant Estrogens”

There are three main groups of phytoestrogens: isoflavones (soy, chickpeas orgarbanzo, red clover, lentil, beans), lignans (for example, flaxseed), andcoumestans (red clover, sunflower seeds, sprouts). Phytoestrogens are not struc-turally related to estrogen but bind to estrogen receptors. Phytoestrogens are100 to 10,000 times weaker than endogenous (produced on your own) estro-gen. Since phytoestrogens have estrogenic effects, they may increase the risk ofbreast cancer or have other adverse effects similar to prescription estrogen. Peo-ple with breast cancer, a history of breast cancer, or a family history of breastcancer should avoid or use phytoestrogens cautiously.

Black Cohosh and ChasteberryThese are popular herbs to treat hot flashes but they also have estrogen-like ef-fects and should be avoided in women with a history of breast cancer.

Our ProtocolIn our practice at IFSMED, we developed a protocol utilizing Pregnenolone, Suc-cinic Acid, and Vitamin C and Rosehip extract which efficiently reduces the bur-den of hot flashes.

PregnenoloneA universal precursor of the steroid hormones which is produced in the bodyfrom cholesterol. In addition to its hormonal function, it stimulates specific re-ceptors in the brain. It not only controls hot flashes but also improves energy, vi-sion, memory, clarity of thinking, well-being, and often sexual enjoyment orlibido. Administration of Pregnenolone should be performed under periodiccontrol of the blood levels of adrenal and sex steroid hormones.

Succinic AcidA product of the citric cycle which is known to optimize estrogen metabolism, normalize bone mass and stabilize mood. To enhance the beneficial effect ofSuccinic Acid on hot flashes, it is frequently combined with Vitamin C and Rose-hip extract.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, contact the Institute for Special-ized Medicine at (858) 794-9192 or visit www.ifsmed.com to purchase Preg-nenolone or Succinic Acid.

Healthy Life, Healthy BodyA healthy body is the result of many factors. Each person is born with a dif-ferent genetic and family background, which implies specific tendenciesand risks. Yet, building and keeping a healthy human apparatus – body, mind and soul, is the consequence of the individual’s capacity to take re-sponsibility and actions. Below are a few basic principles to remember.

Communicate with the Earth and the Cosmos:An increased number of people are now aware that a great amount of thefood available is not only filled with poisons but also genetically modified. They have changed their eating habits by avoiding sugar, tobacco and evengluten in order to be healthier and more mentally alive. By paying attentionto everything we ingest, apply to our skin, and what we breathe, we canalso develop a conscious relationship with the Earth. Human beings were in-tended to be nourished from the gifts of Mother Nature, and nurturedthrough a loving relationship with the Planet. Instead, they have tried tocontrol and modify the very nature of life. Let us re-establish inner commu-nication with our environment and a new path of balance between mod-ern knowledge, technologies and Nature. Listen to the rhythms, the cyclesof the seasons, feel that you are a part of a wondrous Consciousness, aliveand caring and your body-mind and your life will be happier and more re-warding.

Silence and Meditation:In order to feel, hear and communicate with your surroundings you haveto learn to listen. Meditation is your tool and now considered the numberone healing agent by the integrative medical community. Take 20 minutesevery day to silence your machines and your mind. Turn inward and setyour intent; for example, if you want to connect with the Cosmos, imagineyourself travelling through space and to the center of the Universe. Visual-ize the stars, imagine your body drifting orsoaring and let go. If you start thinking, justimagine yourself flying again amongst thestars….

Your State of Mind:A healthy life also depends of our state ofmind. What is going on in our head? Areyou accepting to be overwhelmed by yourjob, your expenses or the depressing news? Are you only interested in people who willbring you more business, more money?Your body will feel lighter if you develop thehabit of taking time for yourself, discon-necting from electronics and the internet, and monitor your thinking habits. Then, whenever you catch yourself thinking neg-atively, damaging your immune system, erase the thought. If you are a beginner, imagine a white board on which your neg-ative idea is printed. Then, erase it and re-place it by the image of a beautifullandscape with a shining river runningthrough it. Or, even more effective, find apositive meaning to the situation that youare experiencing or constructive traits ofthe person you are angry at and write it onthe board…. In each challenge, there is ablessing. You just have to find or see it.

Expressing Gratitude:Gratitude is the art of gracefully appreciat-ing what we receive, whether tangible ornot. In the Coachella Valley, we are sur-rounded by beauty. Are we still givingthanks for such a blessing? Also, are we ca-pable of focusing on happy moments, ex-citing projects, and the art of giving? Givingis not a matter of income; the best thingone can offer is a presence, a listeningheart, a smile or a nice word to someone inthe street.

Discriminate: The people who are around you have adeep impact on your life… but this is an-other story… that we will developed in thenext issue.

Smart LipoWhat is it? And is it right for you?

By Kelly O’Neil M.D.

Smart Lipo - Smart Lipo is a laser system which can be used toassist cosmetic surgeons in body sculpting procedures. It hasproven to be a safe and effective treatment and is becoming moreand more popular.

Destroys fat – The laser melts fat and destroys fat cells. Whenthe fat destruction is complete, the Lipo surgeon usually removesthe dead cells and melted fat with a suction devise. Smart Lipocan be used in conjunction with Tumescent Liposculpture or, insmall cases, as a stand alone treatment. When used alone SmartLipo is most effective in small areas such as the face or arms, al-though any body area may be treated.

Tightens skin – One of the advantages of Smart Lipo is that itstimulates collagen resulting in skin tightening as well as fat re-moval. This is most effective on the face and neck, arms, ab-domen, and back. For patients who want to shed inches but alsoneed skin tightening Smart Lipo is the choice unless the patientdesires skin tightening surgery (i.e. abdominoplasty, armlift, necklift).

No general anes-thesia – The mostimportant advan-tages of smart Lipoand TumescentLiposculpture aresafety. Most of theserious complica-tions associatedwith cosmetic sur-gery are related togeneral anesthesia.

Smart Lipo and Tumescent Liposculpture can be easily performedutilizing local anesthesia only, with or without light sedation, making them safer techniques for body contouring than “oldstyle” Liposurgery requiring general anesthesia.

Minimal blood loss – studies on “old style” Liposurgery haveshown that 50% of the fatty fluids removed was blood! No won-der some of these patients require transfusions following Lipo-surgery. Smart Lipo and Tumescent Liposculpture are practicallybloodless. Most patients lose more blood during their pre-opera-tive blood testing.

Faster post Operative recovery – Less bleeding means less tis-sue trauma and bruising. Post operative soreness is also reduced. Most patients may return to work in 2 days and limited exerciseis permitted after 3-4 days. About half the patients have no bruis-ing at all.

Better cosmetic results – Smart Lipo and the “Tumescent tech-nique” utilize infiltration of sterile fluid into fat before removal. This loosens and softens the fat for easier removal and shaping/contouring of the body. The small cannulas used with thesetechniques are less likely to cause contour defects (lumpiness, bumpiness, or grooving) that are associated with older Lipo-surgery techniques.

Disadvantages – The only disadvantage of Smart Lipo is that ittakes more time than Tumescent Liposculpture, especially if largevolumes of fat need to be removed. For this reason, most lipo-surgeons charge more for Smart Lipo than Tumescent Liposculp-ture. And, of course, Smart Lipo is a “tool”. The skill andexperience of the liposurgeon will determine how good the re-sults will be.

The O’Neil Skin and Lipo Medical Center specializes in Tumescent Li-posculpture and Smart Lipo procedures and offers very competitiveprices. Sample fees for Tumescent Liposculpture of the abdomen is$3000.00 and Smart Lipo of the abdomen is $3500.00. Fees includeoperating room and anesthesia costs. The cheeks, arms, back, hips, waist, inner and outer thighs, knees, and calves are also treated at theO’Neil Center. It is common to treat 3-4 areas at one session. Great fi-nancing options available! Example: Abdomen Liposculpture for as lit-tle as $67 a month! You can contact our office at (800) 541-3764or visit our website www.oneilskinandlipocenter.com.

For some, the electrical imbalance may get sobad that may go into seizures. These misfir-ing nerve signals cause some to experiencetremors, tics, as well as obsessive compulsivedisorder and attention deficit disorder, ADD.The symptoms of tics are involuntary move-ments throughout the body that are knownas either simple tics (rapid eye blinking, jerk-ing the neck, etc), or complex tics (a series ofbody movements). A condition called Dysto-nia is another movement disorder that canrange from mild to constant muscle contrac-tion in different parts of the body.

Not least of all is that it makes you nervousand irritated! It doesn’t show on the outsidebut your body feel is shaking on the inside, like it is being choked slowly and invisibly; aclothes pin pinch sensation on your nerves. Many times, a patient’s behavior is mistak-enly taken for “anger management issues”when the brain is misfiring!

It is scary, yet when yougo to the doctor it is notpin-pointable; usuallyblamed on some type of

nervous reaction or hormone imbalance.Generally these patients are given anxiety orsleeping pills. Sometimes due to side effectsthey may experience even more scary symp-toms. Clumsiness or memory problems suchas forgetting why you even entered a room iscommon; dizziness, an ominous feeling of astroke or thoughts of doom. They’re scared, sick of being medicated and just want theirlife back. This terrifying cascade of symptomsdoes NOT have to be mysterious.

Nerve HypersensitivityThen there are those whose nervous systemis so hypersensitive that it only takes drivingover a bump in the road, or hearing a certainhigh pitched noise that sends them into a cri-sis of pain. This nerve hypersensitivity causesone to be sensitive to bumps, noise, and light. It produces distortions in the body (jointsthat misalign). Unresolved and re-occurringdistortions, and pain, that send you to thedoctor again and again… only to be ambigu-

ously understood. You feel like your situationis strange, that there is no one that feels theway you do.

Stopping the madness begins with dealingwith the origin of the cause. If the mecha-nism is never addressed, the condition maynever resolve.

Using an evidence-based approach and em-pirically-supported treatments has enabledmore and more people to effectively recovertheir health; and in many cases, achieve ahigher life quality than they ever thought waspossible. This has an enormous impact on farmore than the science world, but the peoplesuffering with chronic conditions who havebeen told that they would have to “live withtheir pain” do not have to live with their painany longer.
