How Do They Do It?Gathering pollen is not as easy as it sounds.Once a honeybee arrives at a flower, it settles inand nimbly scrapes off the powdery loosepollen from the stamen with its jaws and frontlegs, moistening it with a dab of honey broughtfrom the hive. The enlarged and broadenedtarsal segments of her legs have a thick trim-ming of bristles, called pollen combs. The beeuses these combs to brush the gold powderfrom coat and legs in mid-flight. With a skillfulpressing movement of its hind legs (auricles),the bee pushes the gathered gold into its pollenbaskets. These baskets, surrounded by a fringeof long hair, are simply concave areas locatedon the outside of its tibias. When the bee's bas-kets are fully loaded, the microscopic goldendust has been tamped down into a singlegolden grain, or granule.
One of the most interesting facts about beepollen is that it cannot be synthesized in a lab-oratory. When researchers take away a bee'spollen-filled comb and feed it manmade pollen, the bee dies even though all the known nutri-ents are present in the lab-produced, synthe-sized food. Many thousands of chemicalanalyses of bee pollen have been made with the
very latest diagnostic equipment, but there arestill some elements present in bee pollen thatscience cannot identify; the bees add some mys-terious "extra" of their own. These unidentifi-able elements may very well be the reason beepollen works so spectacularly against so manydiverse conditions of ill health.
Double-DutyThese busy insects are programmed to gatherpollen and carry it back to the hive as food forthe colony. However, even more important asfar as humans are concerned, they are also re-sponsible for the pollination of more than 80percent of green growing things! As bees buzzfrom blossom to blossom, microscopic pollenparticles coat their stubby little bodies sodensely that they sometimes look like yellowfuzz balls. When they arrive at the next flower,a portion of the live golden dust is transferredto that blossom and pollination is accom-plished.
It is important to recognize that one teaspoonof pollen takes a working bee eight hours a dayfor one month to gather. Each bee pollen pelletcontains over two million flower pollen grainsand one teaspoonful contains over 2.5 billion

Bee pollen is the food of the young bee, and is approximately 40% protein. It isconsidered one of nature's most completely nourishing foods and contains nearlyall nutrients required by humans. About half of its protein is in the form of freeamino acids that are ready to be used directly by the body. Such highly assimilatedprotein can contribute significantly to one's protein needs. There are numerousreports from medical experience that conclusively show the benefits of bee pollenexceed that of a simple food item. And the bees do most of the work.
