Michael W. Rickard lived and breathed Owens

Express athletics for parts of four decades, starting as an Owens student in the late 1970s until the time of his unexpected death in December 2010.

The 1982 Owens alumnus worked for the College for 25 years, the last 10 as Athletic Director. The Express women’s basketball team is wearing a “MR” patch on its uniforms to honor his legacy this season.

He was the No. 1 fan of the Owens Express, and the College has continued his legacy by naming the main athletics hallway The Michael W. Rickard Student-Athlete Hall of Excellence. Located in the Student Health and Activities Center, it showcases the College’s 2 national championship teams, 2 national runners-up, 48 conference titles, 38 NJCAA athletic All-American and 69 NJCAA academic All-Americans.

The Athletic Dept. also has started the Michael W. Rickard Student-Athlete Award, which will be presented annually to one student-athlete who embodies excellence in community service, academics and athletics.

The Owens Community College Alumni Association has established The Michael W. Rickard Memorial Fund, at the Owens Community College Foundation, with an initial gift of $10,000 that will provide program funds for the Athletic Dept. as well as scholarships for students. To contribute to the Michael W. Rickard Memorial Fund, contact the Alumni Association at (567) 661-7876 or [email protected].

EXPRESS CAP HISTORIC TWO-YEAR RUN WITH 54-11 RECORD

The Express lost 75-71 to Cincinnati State in the Region XII District I championship to end their season, and for the second straight year, finished just one win from qualifying the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.

However, they capped an outstanding two-year run for the sophomore class.

In those two seasons, the Express went 54-11 overall and 22-4 in the OCCAC. They won the program’s fifth OCCAC title last year, tied for the second fewest losses (11) in a two-year period, had the second most wins overall (54) in a two-year period, had the most regular season wins (26) in a single season their freshmen year, had the most regular season wins (51) in a two-year period, had the second fewest conference losses (4) in a two-year period, tied for the second most conference wins (22) in a two-year period, and finished with 23 straight home victories. They rose as high as No. 2 in 2009-10 and No. 4 in 2010-11 in the NJCAA Division II national rankings.

As a team, they won 18 consecutive games in 2009-10 and had the best start to a season in program history last year with their 11-0 run.

It was also an historic year for head coach Michael Llanas as he became the program’s all-time wins leader with 152. He surpassed Bill Gomoluch’s previous mark of 131 with a win over Lake

Michigan on Nov. 20. Additionally, he also surpassed Gomoluch’s mark for most career OCCAC wins and now has 68 total.

Last year, Owens set or tied 11 individual or team school records – highlighted by Hailey Galvan’s 11 block game against Cincinnati State on Feb. 12 and Nasumbi Beard’s 9-for-9 field goal performance against Sinclair on Jan. 8. Sophomore Jordan Floyd set single season and career free throw percentage records, as well.

Sophomore Jasmine Blanton became the program’s second all-time leading scorer with 951 points. She is only the fifth women’s basketball player to eclipse 900 career points. Freshman Aja Hall stated her case to possibly join her this year with 472 points as she was the team’s leading scorer.

Following the season, Llanas was named OCCAC Coach of the Year, while Blanton was named the OCCAC Player of the Year, First Team All-Region, First Team All-OCCAC and team MVP. Hall made Second Team All-OCCAC, while sophomores Brittany Morris and Karrah Windau earned Honorable Mention All-OCCAC. Sophomores Saige Meyer and Windau earned the team’s Co-Most Improved Player honors, while Galvan was named Defensive Player of the Year, freshman Kieona Foster won the Coaches Award and Floyd won the Mark Henry Award.

Blanton continued her career at West Virginia State University, while Meyer and Windau moved on to University of Northwestern Ohio.
