Pace graduated four players, threestarters, from last year’s team, whilereturning seven players. Pace willadd three true freshmen along with agraduate transfer student to thisyear’s squad. The Setters willdepend on their youth with champi-onship pedigree to carry a senior-less team. Despite the loss ofKlingele, the Setters should have abalanced offensive attack with moreconsistent and reliable scorers.Coach Seymour will rely on one ofher top recruiting classes along withher returning core players to powerthe Setters this season.

FRONT COURTThe Setters will have a plethora of ver-satility in their front court this seasonas three of Coach Seymour’s incomingplayers will see action in the paint.Returning to the Setter frontcourt isjunior Taylor Losey, who was secondon the team in scoring last season.Losey is a solid all-around player, whocan shoot from the outside and alsoplay in the post. She is a good ballhandler and her versatility will be acontributing factor to the success ofthe team this season. Joining Losey is sophomore KristinConnolly, who comes off a productivefreshman season as she started in at 28games last year. Connolly connectedon 35 trifectas last season, finishingfourth in school history in freshmanthree-pointers. She gained a wealth ofexperience last season and is a viablethreat to shoot from long range as wellas the ability to score in the paint. Brittany Huggins also returns to theSetter front court following a solidfirst collegiate season. She saw actionin all 28 games for Pace, hitting 24three-pointers and provided a consis-tent presence on the glass. Huggins isa versatile scorer inside the paint withthe ability to step behind to three-pointarc and provide a diverse threat. Shehad a good off-season and will look toprovide the Setter lineup with a sparkoff the bench. The final returner to the Setter frontcourt is Jackie Gogel, who saw limitedaction in 15 games last season. Gogelwill add depth to the post position andsee time off the bench to provide soliddefense.

Transfer Sheisha McCollum leads atalented incoming front court thatalso adds Brittany Shields and MaralJavadifar. McCollum is a reliablescorer in the post, who is quick anda strong rebounder. Shields is a solid ball handler, whocan score inside the paint but alsocan go outside and shoot three-pointers. The 2007-08 WestchesterCounty high school player of theyear comes to Pace with post seasonexperience as she led her team to aNew York State title as a senior lastseason. Shields is an all-aroundskilled player whose strong postpresence will be a key for theSetters this season.Javadifar is another good ball han-dler for a post player and is a solidrebounder. She comes to Pace fol-lowing a career in a highly competi-tive high school league. Javadifarhas incredible quickness for a postplayer and will be another consistentscorer and tough defender for Pacethis season. BACK COURTJunior Laura Mooney returns to theSetter back court this season andwill see action at point guard.Mooney is a good floor leader and atough competitor. She is a hard-worker and a solid defender, whowill play a key role in distributingthe ball.Sophomore Lisa Welsome will stepinto the starting shooting guard spotafter a solid freshman season lastyear. Welsome is a good instinctiveplayer, who has increased her shoot-ing in the off-season. She is also aneffective passer into the post andgained a wealth of experience as afreshman. The first NE-10 championshipgame was won by Bentley, 80-65, overSpringfield College.

Currently in its third decade, the Northeast-10 Conference hasestablished itself as one of the premierall-around NCAA Division II confer-ences in the nation. The NE-10 is nowthe second largest Division II confer-ence in the country and is comprisedof 15 institutions, six from theCommonwealth of Massachusetts, three each from New York and NewHampshire, and one each fromVermont, Connecticut and RhodeIsland. Founded in 1980 as theNortheast-7, the charter memberswere American International College,Assumption College, Bentley College,Bryant College, the University ofHartford, Springfield College andStonehill College. Saint Anselm wasadmitted to the conference in 1981 andMerrimack joined the fold in 1984,replacing Hartford, now a Division Iinstitution.

The conference expandedfrom eight to 10 teams with the addi-

tion of Quinnipiac and SaintMichael's in 1987.

Springfield left the confer-ence for Division III following thecompletion of the 1994-95 aca-demic year. The conferencereturned to 10 teams in 1996-97with the addition of Le MoyneCollege and then expanded to 11in 1997-98 with the inclusion ofPace University. In 1998-99, theconference reverted to 10 schoolswhen Quinnipiac shifted its pro-grams to Division I.

The NE-10 expanded to15 institutions beginning with the2000-01 academic year, howeverwithout changing its name. Thefive new institutions included:Franklin Pierce College (nowUniversity), UMass Lowell,Southern New HampshireUniversity (formerly NewHampshire College), College ofSaint Rose and SouthernConnecticut State University.

In 2008-09, the NE-10adds the University of New Havento fold and loses BryantUniversity to Division I. The con-ference will expand once again in2009-10 as Adelphi Universitywill join as a full member.

In addition, the Northeast-10 Conference sponsors 20 cham-pionships including: men's andwomen's soccer, field hockey, vol-leyball, men's and women's tennis,men's and women's cross country,golf, men's and women's basket-ball, baseball, softball, men's andwomen's lacrosse, football andmen's and women's indoor andoutdoor track and field.

Pace University entersits 12th season as a member ofthe Northeast-10 Conference. The Northeast-10 is the fiftholdest conference in NewEngland. It is older than theDivision I Big East, AmericaEast and NortheastConferences, as well asDivision III leagues includingthe NEWMAC, Little East,Commonwealth Coast, GreatNortheast and North AtlanticConferences.

The Northeast-10Conference consists of 15 teamsin which each team plays 22regular season games againstconference opponents.

The top four teams earn a“bye” in the first round of theconference playoffs while the#5-#12 seeds compete in play-in games to advance to the quar-terfinals.The conference’s semifinals

TRADITION

Page 32: 2008-09 Women's Basketball Media Guide

THE PACE STORY:Pace is a university whose resources have played an essential role in the realization of individual dreams of achievement andwhose mission is voiced in its motto: Opportunitas.Founded in 1906 by the Pace brothers as a business school for men and women who aspired to a better life, Pace Institute beganits transformation into a modern university, with emphasis on the liberal arts and sciences, under Robert Pace 42 years later. With dynamic leadership and fiscally sound management, Pace has grown into one of the largest universities in New York State, with a multi-million dollar physical plant, an endowment of over $100 million and a reputation for excellent teaching and talent-ed, ambitious graduates.Pace is a comprehensive university with five schools and one college that offers a wide range of academic and professional pro-grams for a large, diverse population of more than 13,000 students in for-credit programs, and in affiliated offerings. Through itsLubin School of Business, Pace continues to build its reputation for excellence in business education. The Lienhard School ofNursing, the School of Law, the School of Education and the Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systemsare more recent responses to the needs of the New York City and Westchester communities for strong professional schools toprepare a well-educated workforce. The University's decision in 1948 to develop a college of arts and sciences as both an autonomous academic unit and a founda-tion for the undergraduate core curriculum has strengthened and enriched the educational experience of Pace students and pro-vided an ongoing source of intellectual enrichment to the University. The Dyson College of Arts and Sciences is central to theintellectual life of Pace, to shaping academic priorities, and to providing ethical, humanistic and scientific principles upon whichlives and careers are founded. At the heart of Pace's academic values is an historic commitment to excellence in teaching, as manifested by small classes, anemphasis on skill development and critical thinking, special tutoring and support services, and academic advising. Academicexperiences at Pace emphasize teaching from both a practical and theoretical perspective, drawing upon the expertise of facultywho balance academic preparation with professional experience to bring a unique dynamic to the classroom. While the primary emphasis of the institution is on excellent teaching, the university supports and encourages scholarly activityto ensure the intellectual vitality of the faculty. While much of the work has had professional application, Pace particularlyinvites scholarship that directly relates to the classroom experience and involves students in the research process.Pace has always had a student-centered focus and is committed to providing access to those who range widely in age, ethnicity,socio-economic background and academic preparation. Increasing amounts of institutional financial aid to help students meet thegrowing costs of a private education; locations in New York City and Westchester County; evening, weekend and summer sched-uling; and special counseling and academic support services are ways in which the university has sought to enhance the accessi-bility and opportunities of a Pace education.A significant tradition of Pace University is its strong relationship with business, civic and community organizations. Offeringspecial programs and services to neighboring institutions and corporate partners, the university gains strength in return fromthese partnerships and derives benefits for its students from the networks these linkages provide. The future of Pace University will be shaped by its traditions and values as they respond to the current needs and expectations oftoday's students. Combining excellence in instruction with personal attention, Pace provides the virtues of the small arts and sci-ences college with the curricular richness, scholarly disposition and excellent professional programs of the research and compre-hensive institution.HISTORY OF PACE UNIVERSITY:Founded in 1906 by the Pace brothers, Homer and Charles, The Pace Institute was a business school for men and women whoaspired to a better life.Homer and Charles Pace borrowed $600 to rent a classroom and office in the old Tribune building in lower Manhattan to teach10 men and three women the principles of accounting and business law. That building once stood where the Pace Plaza buildingstands today. Two years later, because of the overwhelming success of the Pace School of Accountancy, the Pace brothers relocated classes tothe nearby Hudson Terminal complex. Another move to the Transportation Building at 225 Broadway took place in 1927 inresponse to continued growth.3030

Page 33: 2008-09 Women's Basketball Media Guide

In 1948, Pace Institute was approved for college status by the New York Board of Regents. Academic expansion forced yet anothermove to 41 Park Row in 1951, and two years later Pace College received authorization from the State Education Department togrant the bachelor of arts degree.Classes began on the Pleasantville campus in 1963. The year before, the Marks Hall building was signed over to the College byPace Trustee Wayne Marks, President of General Foods, and his wife, Helen. Soon after, Dyson Hall was constructed, named inhonor of alumnus, Trustee and benefactor, Charles H. Dyson. Willcox Hall was named for Trustee and benefactor Byron Willcox. In 1965, the Undergraduate School of Business Administration, the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education wereestablished. The year following, the School of Nursing was founded and was later named after alumnus, Trustee and benefactorGustav Lienhard.
