Y ou’d think, would-n’t you, that after

performing the miracle of the loaves and fishes, Jesus would have been fairly confident about getting the crowd to be-lieve what he was teach-

ing? Such a huge-scale miracle would surely have set tongues wag-ging and he would have been on a shoe-in when it came to street credibil-ity. Yet moments after eating the food, the crowd start questioning Jesus’ status. We know who he is, so how can he claim to have come down with food from heaven? More is to fol-low in the next few Sun-days as they go off and abandon him. They may have had their fill but indigestion has set in.

Jesus has strong words for the crowd. He tells

them to stop moaning and he accuses them of missing the whole point of his teaching because they are more con-cerned about the free meal than about its meaning.

What Jesus told them, and is telling us today, is that the food which he offers is a food that will satisfy at the deepest possible level. His teaching is no passing fad that will be popular for a few years and then pass into history; it is the message of eternal life. It is what we need if we are to stop merely breathing and start the business of living. It’s the difference between mere existence and glo-rious life. Your fathers ate manna in the desert, he tells the crowd, and they are now dead. But if you eat my flesh then you will live for ever. Yes, you will suffer hu-man death but you will transcend it.

C hristians believe that this invitation involves a number

of things. Clearly it re-fers to eating and drink-ing at the Eucharist. By

so doing we unite our-selves to Christ and we form a body of believers sharing communion among each other. We become what we eat: the Body of Christ. We sign on the dotted line to be like Christ to others as members of his Church on earth.

But first we have to make sure we have re-ceived the message of Jesus that comes from his word. Our sharing communion, our accept-ing to eat and drink the

food of life, means first listening to the scrip-tures. Only when we are formed by the word of God are we ready to eat and drink. Like the crowd in today’s gospel, if we rush straight in to the meal, we may end up full. And that’s when the indigestion starts.

INDIGESTION?

FAITH IN FOCUS:

Lands End to John O’Groats Bike Ride

Prayer of thanks

from Alan Morris

Dear Lord

It is indeed great to be back home and both Alan and I have missed home and family. Thank you for keeping us both safe and well.

Whilst I thought I had set myself a challenging goal, You Lord saw fit to spice it up a touch and throw in a few extra elements to test us, with each day seemingly presenting a new range of obstacles to be overcome, from the repairs to van and caravan to the challenges of navigation and weather. I guess you knew we would overcome them.

Thanks Lord for the people who rearranged their fortnight to accommodate this chal-lenge, including Karen, Sophie, Amy, Grandad, Grandma, Alan & Julia.

The fundraising has been a phenomenal success thanks to the team of Sister Helen, Monic, Helen and my friend Terry. Such an event as this does not happen without a significant financial cost and between us, Alan's family and my family have met those expenses so that all the funds raised on the Just Giving page or donated directly are going to L'Arche - and that's over £4,000!

Thanks Lord for all those in our Parish and L’Arche Flintshire community who have donated and taken such an active interest in our epic adventure making the whole ex-perience very special.

We entrust L'Arche Flintshire to your care. Amen

Celebration for Alan's Bike Ride (it was last Monday in the town Methodist Church): A note from Meena Kerlslake

“As I arrived I was warmly greeted by a core member of L'Arche Flintshire, and taken inside to meet everyone else - folk from St David's, from Buckley and beyond. L'Arche Flintshire is a vibrant friendly group which includes our own Stephen. After a buffet supper, we gathered around to hear a little about Alan's journey, to sing and sign and pray together, and to join in a music workshop. The bike ride and its fundraising ( now £4000+ )was great ... but what will stay with me for longer was the atmosphere of love and inclusiveness where all people are treated equally”

Coffee Morning

There will be a coffee morning in the Church Hall on Tuesday 18th August between 10am and 12 Noon. This is to support the work of Fr. John Kirwan (Mill Hill Fathers) in the Congo. There will be a cake stall and Raffle. All are welcome. Tickets £1.50

Margaret O’Hara and Jane Kay

Sacrament of Baptism

We welcome into our parish Community Olifia Rose Wil-liams who is baptised here today. As Andrew Williams and Amy Jane Healy give thanks to God for the gift of Olifia, may

she in turn bring many blessings and much

happiness to them.
