Dear St Paul of the Cross Parishioners, The one common grievance that I hear from many younger and older parents is that they have no time. We are all over-stretched. We do not have the time even to do the things that we cannot neglect. Among the many gifts that God has given us, the principal one is time. The God Who created us continues to sustain us by injecting His life into us each and every instant.

Time is one gift that makes all other gifts possible. Death is the ultimate possibility that denies all other possibilities, as a French philosopher once said. Between birth and death, we enjoy a certain amount of time. It is a limited resource that we need to use wisely and carefully. As the ancient Greeks used to say, “We never bathe twice in the same river.” Just like the river that keeps flowing, time keeps march-ing on. How do we use this limited resource? What are wise stewards called to do? First of all, we have to ask ourselves if we assign sufficient time for God. When I was growing up in India as a minority in the vast ocean of Hinduism, going to church on Sunday was not even an option. In a certain sense, Sunday Mass gave us a sense of identity. Probably that was the experience of many in this country too. We have seen Sunday Mass attendance in the US drop drastically over the last three decades. Can we make this a commitment that we cannot neglect? Offering the Eucharist on Sunday is an act of thanksgiving to God who has been generous to us. I would like to call upon everyone, especially parents, to make Sunday Mass a priority. Discipleship costs and the sacrifice of time is a worthy expression of our commitment. Being stewards, we must also dedicate time for our spiritual growth. Do we spend Sunday as a day of rest when we can replenish our spirits through prayer, reading, and quiet time? This parish offers ample possibilities to grow in our faith. We have special moments of prayer and growth such as the Rosary, the chaplet, and Bible Study. Do we use these opportunities to our own spiritual advantage? In order to attend a talk or a moment of prayer we need to give up something else. Are we willing to make that sacrifice? Good stewards of time use it to nurture their significant relationships. As we struggle to juggle our busy schedules, we can unwittingly neglect the important people in our lives. Married couples must constantly seek to find time for each other. Parents have to find ways to spend quality time with each of their children. Sometimes it would be better to give our loved ones an hour of our time than to buy them expensive presents at Christmas. Giving undivided attention to our spouses or parents or children or friends, listening to their stories that they have recounted many times before, is a genuine act of love. While we take care of everyone else, we cannot neglect ourselves. Each one of us has to examine our schedules from time to time to see if we are stretching ourselves too much. Are there commitments or projects that I should abandon? Am I a person who tends to say “Yes” to everyone and to everything? We need to find the time to exercise, to sleep, to read, to enjoy music, to relax, to cultivate a hobby, and sometimes to smell the roses. We need to use our time also to enrich the lives of others. Do I give my time to help others, to give my voice to the voiceless, to defend the weak and the oppressed? Our spending time in church always imposes on us the obligation to build God’s kingdom in our homes, our neighborhoods and our cities. At a wedding reception that I attended a while ago the father of the bride read a short poem about time. I would like to share it with you:

Time is… Too slow for those who wait, Too swift for those who fear,

Too long for those who grieve, Too short for those who rejoice;

But for those who love, time is eternity. Let us use our time for love – love for God and love for our neighbor. That way we will never run out of time. Yours warmly,

Dear New Friends at St. Paul, I am arriving shortly by way of St Catherine of Alexandria in Oak Lawn to join your Parish ministry team as an associate pastor. I was ordained five years ago and this will be my second assignment. I grew up in Northfield, IL and went to St. Philip the Apostle school. My family owned a long-time restaurant staple in Northfield called the Willow Inn Club, where I worked as a busboy for many years. For high school I attended Loyola Academy. I earned my automotive certification and began to work as a mechanic. I felt God calling me to continue learning and gaining life experience and I got out-side my comfort zone and joined AmeriCorps national service. Our team did service projects across the country. I did my second year of service stationed in Montpelier, Vermont, working at an organization called the Youth Services Bureau. It was there that I began to explore more deeply a relationship with God and the choice of grow-ing deeper into a life of faith. I met a great priest out there who sat down with me and fielded a bevy of tough questions. Some of the roadblocks that inhibited a more ten-der relationship with God began to melt away and in order to work on me a bit, I be-lieve, he called me to sign up for a slot in perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. That is where all the usual noise crowding a discerning heart gets set aside and the Lord of silence speaks to the attentive heart. By the time I finished my service I was ready to go to college with the intent to one day transfer to St. Josephs College Seminary. I kept saying “Lord, I am heading down this path I suspect you are calling me to, so if I’m mishearing your word let me know and I’ll switch.” Abundant grace is needed to survive a vocation in a world where confusion is widespread. I loved my time at St. Joe’s and being a somewhat later vocation, I experienced and tasted different paths and prayerfully kept on to Mundelein Seminary. I was to be there during a vibrant period with Bishop Barron as our rector, who inspired us and helped us see the beauty of the Church and the abiding priority of evangelization. I have loved being a priest the past five years and had an opportunity to grow into the role of ministering. I hope to continue growing as a priest under Fr. Britto’s expert tutelage. I also enjoy playing sports and riding my motorcycle. I belong to a motorcycle club called the Knights of Christ. I love gardening, science fiction novels, and cooking. I look forward to meeting many new people and praying the Divine Liturgy in your community. Fr Nick ---------------

Welcome Fr. Nick Cavallari!

Dear St Paul of the Cross Parishioners, My prayers have been answered. After anxiously waiting for more than two weeks, I welcome with open arms Fr Nick Cavallari as our associate pastor. I firmly believe he is the perfect match for our parish and I know that he will bless us all in the coming years with his many gifts. I am sure you will make him feel welcome. Even though this virus is keeping us apart, my sincere hope is that you will get to meet him in person in the coming weeks and months. God bless you, Fr Nick! We look forward to getting to know you.

Congratulations, Fr. Nick on being appointed

our new associate Pastor.

We look forward to meeting you!

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — You taught your people that those who are just must likewise be kind (Wisdom 12:13, 16-19). Psalm — Lord, you are good and forgiving (Psalm 86).

Second Reading — The Spirit comes to aid us in our weakness (Romans 8:26-27). Gospel — Jesus proposes parables to the crowds, teaching them of the reign of Go (Matthew 13:24-43 [24-30]).

SAINT SHARBEL MAKHLŪF (1828-1898)

The convenience store owner chatted animatedly in Arabic with coworkers, but hardly at all with his American clien-tele. So soon after 9/11, he probably figured, with my accent, the less said, the better. That changed when an Ameri-can customer recognized Saint Sharbel’s portrait on the wall: “So you’re Lebanese Maronites!” The owner was hap-pily incredulous: “You know our saint?” “Not at first,” the customer admitted. “But we help the Catholic Near East

Welfare Association, and their magazine published that picture and called Sharbel the ‘Paradoxical Artisan of Peace.’ ” “Everyone thinks we’re Muslims,” said the owner, “and some of my workers are. Saint Sharbel helps us live together in peace!” A hermit for twenty-three years, little is known of Sharbel’s life. He died after suffering a

stroke while celebrating the liturgy. Miracles attributed to his intercession number in the thousands, and in war-torn Lebanon,

Catholics, Orthodox, and Muslims pray together where his incorrupt body is entombed. How lovely if after our pass-ing, we too could be remembered for having brought very different people to the one God, together in peace.

Every year during the Easter Vigil, we welcome to our faith community people from different backgrounds who choose, as adults, to become Catholic and to be fully initiated in the faith. The Catechumens (those who have not been Baptized) and the Candidates (those who were baptized in different Christian denominations) are joined by Catholics who have not completed receiving the Sacraments, to go through months of preparation before they can receive the Sacraments and become fully initiated Catholics at the Easter Vigil.

Since last September, we’ve had nine people who were going through the RCIA program (The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) and preparing for the Easter Vigil at our parish. Then, because of the lockdown due to the virus, everything stopped just few weeks before Easter.

Our Sojourners (as we affectionately call them here at the parish) had to put their journey on hold and are waiting patiently for the day when they can receive the Sacraments. Their spiritual hunger to be united to Jesus in the Sacra-ment of the Eucharist has intensified their longing. But God does not abandon his people. We are happy to announce that their wait is coming to end! On Sunday August 9, our RCIA Candidates will be receiving the Sacraments of Initiation during a special mass that Fr. Britto will celebrate for them at the parish. The mass will be streamed live.

We ask you to please keep them in your prayers. Hopefully, you will be able to welcome them into our faith community soon!

We also like to announce that we are starting to prepare for another year of the RCIA program. We have already been contacted by people who are interested in becoming fully initiated Catholics. We ask you to keep them in prayer. We also ask you to spread the word and to invite people to learn more about our faith by inquiring about the RCIA program. This program is also for adult Catholics who have not completed receiving the Sacraments. If you, or some-one you know is interested, please call the rectory, or email: [email protected]

God Bless!

Dear Volunteers, God bless you for volunteering to help us reopen the church. Your sacrifice is deeply appreciated. We have been offering Masses over the last three weeks and now we are starting to celebrate other sacraments such as baptisms, weddings, confessions and funerals. We need more volunteers to step up for all these liturgies. It seems as if the same individuals are volunteering at the various celebrations. We don't want to wear out their generosity. Weddings are scheduled primarily on Saturdays at 12:30 pm or 2:30 pm. Baptisms take place on Sunday afternoons between 1 and 3 pm. Funerals are scheduled as needed either at 10 am or at 12:30 pm. Kindly indicate your preference and we will develop a rotating schedule. Without the help of our volunteers we cannot continue to welcome our parishioners back to church. Please help us. And the Lord who sees everything will reward you. To register to volunteer, please contact Madeleine McCoy at 847-825-7605 x2221 or [email protected]. God bless! Fr Brito

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY, AUGUST 1-2

The summer Mission Cooperation Plan is an opportunity for our parish to learn about, take inspiration from, and support missionaries from around the globe. This summer, due to the pandemic, it is impossible to have an

in-person visitor, so we are hearing from our mission cause in a different way. We will hold the Mission Co-op collection on August 1-2.

Mission Appeal — Daughters of Mary-Tabora, Tanzania

Sr. Sophia Mbihije, CDMT, belongs to the Religious Congregation of the Daughters of Mary-Tabora, Tanzania. Currently, she is the Dean-Faculty of Education and Director of Post Graduate Studies at Archbishop Mihayo University College of Tabora -Tanzania. Sis-ter Sophia will be sharing with us the work of the Daughters of Mary. Sister thanks you for the opportunity to share with you about the Daughters of Mary-Tabora and their ministries in Tanzania. About Us The Daughters of Mary-Tabora (CDMT) is a Diocesan Religious Congregation of women. The charism of the Congregation is love and service. Each member of the community en-gages in a

variety of different activities such as health care, education, pastoral ministry, social work, and the development of women and youth in 8 Dioceses in Tanzania.

“Their Needs”

The effect of HIV in Tanzania has led to a great number of orphans and homeless children within the country. As part of relief services, the Daughters of Mary established an elementary school and dispensary in the remote rural areas. The education related to psychological, intellectual, physical, spiritual therapy, and healthcare, is offered to the orphan and homeless children, and other people in the areas we minister. The orphans need not only attention in areas of food, shelter, clothing, and teaching facilities, but also more classrooms as a result of an increase of orphans. Education and healthcare services are particularly directed to rural areas where we serve poor nomadic people and orphans in the rural areas of Tanzania. For example, our community has clinics among those most in need in rural Mission areas. Due to the high concentration of poor people in those areas, the clinics are not meeting the needs of the people. Patients must walk a distance between 20-30 miles to reach the clinics. Expectant mothers often deliver their babies on the way to the clinic, and some patients lose their lives before arriving at the clinics because of the lack of transportation. Even after arriving, patients are forced to share one bed, and some sleep on the floor due to the shortage of beds. We have an urgent need for medical equipment and an ambulance. in If you are able to make a donation to this cause, you can give online at Give Central via our website "Donate" button or by texting "Donate" to 847-865-8370. Choose "Mission Sunday." Or mail your checks to our office at 320 S. Washington St, Park Ridge, IL 60068. Please write "Mission Sunday" in the memo line. Thank you!

The St. Paul of the Cross Food Pantry continues to be a strong source of support for hungry families in the area. We distributed groceries curbside to almost 200 families in June. Generous parishioners and steadfast

community supporters such as you are needed to fulfill our mission to feed the hungry. We could not do it without your help.

Thanks to all from the bottoms of our hearts!

Special notes:

1. Due to a wonderful, overwhelming response, we are currently NOT in need of paper handled grocery bags at this time. We will put out a request again when our supply runs low.

2. In recent weeks, we have increasingly been receiving perishable items (such as fresh bread) or non food items (such as clothing, coloring books, etc.) in the drop box. While we appreciate the generous spirits of the donors, we are NOT able to accept these items.

Currently, we are in need of the following for July.

* 1-3 lb bags of white rice * Ketchup * Salad dressing * Peanut butter * Strawberry jelly * Canned tuna * Canned fruit * Canned meals (Spaghettios, Dinty Moore Stew, etc.) * Chunky style soups * Canned beans (such as black, kidney, pinto...not green beans) * Spaghetti or other pasta * Spaghetti sauce

OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD----SHOULD BE PERSONAL

For many weeks in this column we have emphasized the need to develop a personal relationship with God. From God’s viewpoint, He has already developed a personal relationship with each of us. When we are in Mass with hundreds of people surrounding us, Jesus focuses on each person individually. In the Adoration Chapel, each of us is the object of His attention no matter how many are there. God can do this because He loves each of us and desires that we love Him So many Christians have an image of God as an Entity of great power and awesomeness and thereby limit themselves to hold Him at arms-length, daring not to get near Him because He is God. But we must recognize that He is kindness, love, “slow to anger,” forgiving, caring and gave us His Son to open the doors for our salvation. In the image of Jesus in Divine Mercy, we see Him reaching into his heart and stepping toward us to give us His Blood and Water from this fount of mercy. To bring our relationship with God to a personal level, we must remember that we humans are full of frailties. Unless we have the Will to subvert these frailties and become more Obedient to Jesus, we would be hindered in getting closer to Him. We must respectfully consider Jesus as a friend, a close friend, to whom we can talk to and ask for His guidance and His input, when expressing our disappointments, concerns, and hopes. He knows all of this, but He would like to hear it from us. “The soul is in God and God is in the soul. God is closer to us than water is to a fish. He created us to desire Him.” (St. Catherine of Siena)
