June 28th, 2020 13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

GOSPEL REFLECTION – 14th SUNDAY IN ORDRINARY TIME - June 28, 2020 Everyone would like to be truthful but circumstantial pressure might make one think of deviating from Truth. Think of your father or spouse or son or daughter, who happens to be involved in a criminal act. Would you not try to defend? Would you think of being truthful and not save him or her from being arrested and punished if he or she has committed a crime? Would your love for your dear family member force you to deny the Lord? The Lord is the Truth. Would you be on the side of Truth at all times? This is the challenging situation Lord Jesus presents before us today. If our love for a person dear to us would make our love for Jesus sidelined, we are not worthy of Him. We all love ourselves and try to protect our lives, don’t we? But if we cannot consider love of God above our urge to protect our own lives, we are not worthy of Him. St. Peter committed this mistake when he denied Jesus three times. But he repented and proclaimed in public his love for Jesus three times later (John21:15) We all need money, wealth, and possessions. We have to live a decent life. But would our love of wealth and money force us to deny Jesus? If our denial of Jesus or denial of our Christian faith or denial of the teachings of the Church would help us amass wealth and possessions would we deny? If we do so we are not worthy of Him. Judas committed the same mistake and we know what happened to Him (Mt. 27:5). If we examine the history of early Christian community, we have tens of hundreds of saints who denied everything, even their own lives in order to keep their love of Truth and love of the Lord intact. The biography of St. Sebastian tells us such a heart touching story. He was forced by Diocletian, the Roman Emperor to deny faith in Jesus by offering him great position in the empire and much wealth but Sebastian said, ‘No’. He did not deny the Lord but considered his faith and love of Jesus supreme. As a result, he lost all that was promised and his own life. He was martyred. But what he gained was life, life that lasts forever. Jesus expects radical discipleship, not just following Him as a side business. A true disciple has to deny his own self, pick up his cross and follow Him. Once you choose to be His disciple, it must be the Lord who lives in You. ‘It is not I but Christ who lives in me’, said St. Paul (Gal. 2:20) A true disciples has to crucify his selfishness on the cross after carrying it daily and following the Lord to the Calvary. Once we die with Him, we would surely rise with Him and possess live everlasting. Let us always be on the side of Truth. Let us welcome those who live for Truth and righteousness. All little things we do to welcome those who are on the side of truth would surely be rewarded by the Lord. Even a glass of cold water offered to a true disciple of Jesus (Truth) would not go unrewarded. Let us be a true disciple of the Jesus. Nothing – death or suffering – shall separate us from the love of Christ. (Romans 8:39)
