  • Apple not dead, repeat, not deadIn declaring "Apple is dead" at the conclusionof his letter to the editor (April 1997), Jon Firthhas joined those who take delight in declaringthe end of Apple.

Normally, I don't spend my time respond-ing to such obvious provocations as Mr. Firth's,but in this case I feel compelled to respond. The financial markets and first-buyer prefer-ences are so volatile these days that at somepoint the declarations become self-fulfillingprophecies. Unfortunately, most of the heresyconcerning the status of Apple is based on par-

In conclusion, I have just one question forMr. Firth and the other Apple naysayers: Doesthis sound like a dead company?

Revenge on the nerdsI read with great interest you article aboutRevenge on the nerds (letter from the editor,April '97). I, too, am not convinced that tech-nology is always the way to go. Ironically, myprofession is to teach businesses how to usecomputer applications such as CorelDRAW. Inreality, I find some instances where it's betterto use the trusty, manual method.

For example, I bought an accounting pack-age two years ago, I tried to figure out the pro-gram myself and took a week to sift through thedocumentation (hard and soft). I then tried tocustomize the invoice program that came withthe package. That didn't work. I got so frustratedthat I sold the software through the classifieds. My accountant convinced me to give it anothertry, so I bought the updated version. That versionnow sits on my shelf collecting dust.

I see no faster way than writing invoices byhand as soon as the order comes in. No need toboot up the computer, start the software, feedthe invoice through the dot-matrix printer, and hope that it prints out OK. In fact, person-al handwriting is, in my opinion, in vogue asmost business correspondence is computerized

and lacks a personal touch.I could go on and on about personal orga-

nizers...l use a $5 monthly school calendar-needs no batteries, and I can look at it in aglance. No need to boot up the... Yadda, yadda.

Technology is great. When it works,Tom Anzai,

More reveniieI am a high school student and just handed ina beautiful history paper before spring break. This paper was worth one of the biggest marksfor the term so a computer w'as a must. So, Iwent to work on m y P-166 and CorelWordperfect Suite 7, wh ile running onWindows 95. Writing the paper was the easiestthing I did= compared to printing it,

At an office replacement sale, we picked upa Xerox 4045-100 Series laser printer. Thisprinter takes a while to warm up, but once itdoes, the image quality and speed are excel-lent. However, Xerox does not make a printdriver for the 4045 in Windows 95. The printdriver it does inake is for Windows 3.x. So whatam I todo?

The convoluted solution is to run Windows3.1 and another program, (because Corelrequires Win95), t o pr i n t s o mething. Therefore in order to print my Wordperfectmasterpiece, I have to:A) Type it out in Corel. (Why? Because I'm

spoiled and I really, really like all of thegadgets and doohickeys in Word Perfect).

    B) Convert it to Microsoft Word format.C) Exit Win95 to DOS mode.D) Start Windows 3.1.E) Start Microsoft Word.F) Then print the copy.

I could look past this convoluted path if Ijust had to print the paper once, but things

    hmmmmmm.

aren't perfect the first time, and I hate proof-reading off the computer. So I have to do thisprocess several times a night. I' ve concludedthat I spent just as much time printing theessay, as proofreading it,

Now I' ve looked for solutions. I' ve tried dif-ferent print drivers for the Win95 format andhave emailed the companies involved (Corel,Microsoft and Xerox) for a solution, but theonly answer I received was from Corel tellingme that they couldn't fix my problem (guessedas much) and that they were forwarding theproblem to someone who could (I'm assuming 'Xerox), As of yet, I have not received ananswer and am not expecting one (I tried solv-ing this problem last year).

Though I love my computer and all of itprograms and quirks, going through thisprocess is not as funny at 4 o' clock in themorning when you find out just after you' veturned both your printer and computer off-that you' ve missed a period in one of the foot-notes. Maybe I should go back to my 386,

More on litigationWhile Douglas Gray provided a good generaloverview (SOHO column: "Avoiding common

litigation mistakes" April '97), he did not men-tion an avenue for dispute resolution that isgaining increasing popularity, The concept ofalternative dispute resolution is not onlygaining increasing acceptance within the legalprofession, but in Ontario, mediation will soonbe a required precursor to most cases beforethey can be heard in court. Other provincesalready have, or are planning, similar measuresto ease the heavy burden on the courts system.

Mediation and arbitration are often bettersuited to the early resolution of disputesinvolving small operations. This process nor-mally has a lower cost than litigation and, what is often very important, is in completeprivacy, since it can be shielded from the pub-lic exposure inherent in our open courts sys-tem. The rules governing the legal profession,at least in Ontario, require lawyers to advisetheir clients of the availability of this process.

Affordable next-lleneratlon net-work scanner from H-P One ofthe principal requirements of net-worked business enterprises is to usetechnology to make information acces-sible quickly, easily and reliably foreveryone in the organization whoneeds it. One of the greatest challengesis to deal with information that existson paper: order forms, correspon-dence, manuals, and other paper-basedarchival material. One of the mostpopular solutions is to "digitalize" themountains of paper, so the informa-tion can be stored in and accessedfrom a computer database. To convertpaper records into digital form, corn-panies such as Fujitsu and Canon haveover the years developed high-speedscanners to scan dozens or hundreds ofpages per minute, and transmit theimages to a networked database. Inmany cases, these workhorse networkscanners cost in the $15000 to$35,000 range.

  • Want to spice up your workin a hurry? Get clip art!

    B V D A V I S C N A O

W hat's the fastest, most effective wayto spice up y o u r n e wsletter, brochure, greeting card, or even aWeb pageosThe solution is simpler and cheap-er than you think. It's spelled C-L-I-P-A-R-T.

At one time, newspaper and magazinepublishers and graphic design houses boughtgeneric illustrations on sheets of paper or inbooks. When layout artists needed a picture, they'd simply clip a suitable one out andpaste it onto the layout. Today, most layout isdone on computers, but dip art still exists, not just in books but in digital form on CD-ROMs and increasingly, on the Interne.

Hundreds of thousands of digital clip artimages are available, so you shouldn't everfeel frustrated because you can't design yourartwork from scratch. And at a cost of about10 cents per 100 images (that's one-tenth of apenny for each image!), clip art also makes alot of economic sense. Many companies arenow including photos, fonts, and even soundor video dips in their packages. An increas-ingly common practice is for these same com-panies to post additional images on their Website, which customers can then download. These often have a seasonal flavor: valentinesand Easter eggs in the spring, ghosts and gob-lins in the fall, for example.

In general, clip art images are royalty free.In other words, you don't have to pay a feeevery time you use them for your publication(you should, however, read the flne print, asthere are some restrictions on using clip artcommercially).

In this article, we evaluate seven popularcollections. Keep in mind that, like every-thing else in the computer industry, the qual-ity, style and prices of clip art packages varywidely. Some packages, such as those pro-duced by Expert Software or Softkey, aregeared toward beginners or casual homeusers. They are inexpensive but tend to besimple in design.

Others are targeted at commercial design-ers and boast superb quality, more imagina-tive and contemporary designs, and, yes, higher prices. Image Club's collections of clipart, for example, cost many times more than

    one CD-ROM.

At f irst thought,Ottawa-based NewVision Technolo-gy's collection of

    * 1 0,000 cl ip a r timages appearstiny in iomparhoato the 110,000 or150,000 i m agesoffered by o thercompanies. How-

ever, while Task Force may not win on sheernumbers alone, it is worth considering if youwant to keep life simple and only deal with

And once you start using the Task Forcecollection, you' ll quickly appreciate its highquality, well-designed images and easy-to-usesearch-and-edit software. Unl ikesome products, Task Force alsocomes with relatively sophisticat-ed image editing software.Once you select a specif-ic image, you ranrotate it, mirror i t ,and even change its Ii ng t o laun c hanother application.

Another positivepoint is the artisticappeal and innov-ative designs appar-ent in the collection.Instead of stuffing its CD-ROM with boringdip art, New Vision Technologies chose toinclude attractive i magesthat are decorative, exciting, and even funky.

If you' re looking for a simple, all-inwnepackage that isn't overwhelming or cumber-

the average product, but show a level of qual-ity, polish, and finesse that's high enough toplease a professional.

Following are seven popular coflections(presented in no particular order).

some to use, the Task Force collectioncould be the perfect companion foryou. Business or high-end graphicusers, however, may find this soft-ware too biased toward the "fun" sideversus the "professional" side.

L ooking for t l .highest quality dipart for business or

for I mage C l ubproducts, and you

    4 won't b e di sa p-pointed. At $135each, Image Club's

Objectgear collection of 85 images seemsexpensive, but this isn't your ordinary set of

Designed primarily for professional graph-ics users, Objectgear boasts a high level ofquality, with sharp details and true-to-life rep-resentation. In fact, Image Club even suppliestwo versions of each image (high or low reso-lution), with pre-designed drop or cast shad-ows to give your presentation that extra

    "depth" look.The photo-based Objectgear collec-

tion is available in s i x d i f ferentthemes: business, antique, design, cul-tural, arnusement and food. I evaluatedthe amusement and food CD-ROMs,and absolutely loved them.

The amusement collection includesnifty, quirky photos of delightful col-lectibles, such as a water pistol, paper-weight, toy soldier, and miniature car.The food-oriented CD-ROM, called the

Clay Buffet, was packed with unique imagesof food objects made out of clay. In bothcases, the images were crisp, sharp, and sim-ply fun to look at.

I also checked out Image Club's NeoTechno and Hoopla Splash packages, eachavailable for the same $135 price tag. Again, these 125-to-200 image collections displayed

I I . corpo rate use? Goaboveaverage quality andinnovative designs. Thec artoonish looki n g ,Generation-X targ etedHoopla Splash was especiallyinteresting and captivating.

Image Club, a Calgary-b ased company that i s n o wowned by Adobe Systems, offers many othertypes of dip art and photo images, includingWeb site images, background photos, con-temporary art images, and even antique celes-tial maps. For an average home user, however, the niche-oriented Image Club clip art may beon the expensive side and too limited inscope and magnitude. In any case, you maywant to order the free catalogue by calling thecompany's toll-free number. You' ll have funjust browsing through the pages.

And because the Mega Gallery's imagescover a wide range of categories, themes, and

styles, virtually any-one can use them, regardless ofwhether they wantto design a corpo-rate newsletter orjust spice up a letterto a friend.

I n fact, w i t h60,000 photos, 50,000 il lustrations, 200sounds, and 100 short videos, it's almost over-whelming. This is especially true when you' retrying to search for a specific object. The "wiz-ard" tool does a good job of taking youthrough the search steps, but it can be timeconsuming to juggle five discs. AlthoughCorel throws in a multimedia file manager,it's a bit cumbersome to use.

If you don't mind investing some time, however, you' ll be rewarded with a wealth ofexcellent images suitable for many occasions.Unlike some o f t h e c heaper productsdescribed in this article, Corel's images arewell designed, with good detail.

You might not find strange, wacky or trulyinnovative designs in the Mega Gallery, butthe strength of the Corel products can bedescribed in two words: consistency and pre-dictability. Regardless of what you' re lookingfor, you' ll always find something usable andinteresting no unpleasant surprises,

For general use, the Mega Gallery gets mynod as one of the best buys.

lowest-price-per-image category, A quick cal-culation reveals that you' re only paying sevencents for 100 images with IMSI.

This progressive company also bundles asimple-to-use browser and graphic editor, which makes it possible for you to manipulatethe images and make numerous changes beforepasting them into your favorite document.

    From: iMSI

I found it awkward, however, to "search"for a specific clip art image using IMSI's built-in software, especially when you have to huntthrough 14 different CD-ROMs. Fortunately,IMSI does include a comprehensive, black-and-white catalog of all images.

Compand to high-end products, such asthose offered by Image Qub, the MasteKIips col-lection trails behind in overall quality and origi-nality, and some of the images are less thanmediocre. However, overall it's still a wellmecut-ed package. Besides, this is the only product tooffer such a large number of photo images andthe famous Dover Collection of illustrations.

In general, the images tend to be relative-ly simple and the quality is not consistentacross the categories. But when it comes togiving you the widest, largest selection ofimages to choose from, Masterclips is a hardact to follow. No wonder it's one of the best-seiling clip art software packages.

The flagship 65,000 Image Pak boasts5,000 photos and 2,000 fonts, while the lessexpensive one has 1,000 fonts but no photos.A high-quality clip art catalog (color in the65,000 Pak, black and white in the 25,000 Pak)and decent browser complete the packages.

Click Art also offers four other packagesthat are not commonly available: Art PartsBundle (woodblock engravings), www.art(300 Web images), Cartoons Fun Pak (500single-frame c artoons), a n d Fa m ousMagazine Cartoons (royalty-free, well-knowncartoons).

Super Art Paclr 3%,000From: SoftkeyPdce: $40

At this price, theSoftkey Super ArtPack is exactlythe same price asB roderbun d ' sClick Art 25,000,but offers more.In t o t al , theSoftkey clip artcomes with

33,000 images, including 2,500 photos, 1,200sound clips, and 2,000 fonts. Like the IMSIproduct, Softkey also throws in 300 handwrit-ing fonts that can help make your letter lookmore personal and inviting.

Owned by The Learning Company,Softkey takes pride in offering value-orientedproducts at cut-rate prices, and the Super ArtPack is no exception.

While this three-disc collection hasenough clip art, photos, and images to pleasemost beginners and casual users, keep inmind that the images are plain, simple, andsomewhat boring, at least for my taste. Ifyou' re looking for clip art to use in business orprofessional publications, you may f indSoftkey images to be too unsophisticated (thephotos, though, were of higher quality thanthe clip art images).

Also, I was disappointed that Softkey didn' tinclude an indexed image catalog with the pack-age. You can, of course, examine the thumbnailsof clip art through the browser that's included, but it's sometimes easier to scan through a book

The Super Art Pack isn't a bad packagewhen you take into account its low price, butit doesn't stand out as one of the more attrac-tive clip art collections.
