ealth care touches every person at every stage of life, and is far and away the largest and fastest-growing area of public spending in Canada. Our health care system,

for all its challenges, is frequently cited as one of our country’s most distinguishing features and as a model for other countries to follow. It’s no accident that life expectancy at birth in Canada is consistently among the highest rates in the world.

The practitioners and health care providers you will read about in this publication demonstrate the great breadth of health care options available to Canadians, but they all have characteristics in common: their talent, skill, dedication and experience and commitment to excellence – “an art won by training and habituation”, in the words of Aristotle – that shows why Canada is a leader and example in health.

Glacier Media, one of Canada’s leading information communications companies, is proud to celebrate these dedicated professionals and this vital industry.

Naturopathic medicine has seen dramatic advancement in public acceptance over the past two decades, thanks in part to evidence-based research with licensed naturopathic doctors who ensure the highest quality of treatment is delivered to patients.

“Naturopathic medicine is definitely growing in acceptance,” says Dr. Adam McLeod, ND, BSc (Hons), Yaletown Naturopathic Clinic. “People can’t dismiss it anymore — anyone can research it themselves. For example, many common naturopathic therapies on Google scholar yield dozens of well-controlled trials showing the usage and benefits.”

Established in 2014, Vancouver’s Yaletown Naturopathic Clinic provides a wide range of therapies to improve your health and well-being from a holistic perspective. Tailored to the individual, their diagnosis and treatment draws from a number of modalities including integrative oncology, botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, homeopathy, craniosacral therapy, physical medicine, acupuncture, and lifestyle counseling.

Equally foundational to the future success of the field, naturopathic doctors are experiencing greater recognition as health-care practitioners, now valued in the industry and in policy as a legitimate part of an inclusive system of health care.

“Over the last 20 years there’s been an incredible change in the profession,” reveals Dr. McLeod. “I think we got a lot more respect for our training when we were given prescription rights.”

Most naturopathic doctors first complete a four-year Bachelors degree in arts or sciences, and then to be licensed in B.C., four years at an accredited naturopathic medical college.

The Yaletown Naturopathic Clinic doctors collaborate with conventional medical practitioners to achieve desired outcomes that otherwise might not be as successful independently. It’s about finding the right balance of therapies that resonates with the patient. They treat the root causes of disease and address preventable risk factors, using a wide range of evidence-based, natural and conventional therapies. Each doctor is dedicated to a special focus in their respective areas: Dr. Natalie Rahr, BSc, ND, special needs and pediatrics; Dr. Kathy Dang, ND, MSTOM, acupuncture and fertility; Dr. Reuben Dinsmore, ND, BSc (Hons), men’s health and mental illness, and Dr. McLeod, integrative oncology.

“Our highly-trained doctors collectively cover the whole spectrum of diseases and that makes for an excellent collaborative team,” says Dr. McLeod. “We make sure that our patients see someone with experience with that particular condition.”

Built on a patient-centred approach that emphasizes prevention, treatment, and optimal health, one of the clinic’s core philosophies of naturopathic medicine is embracing the healing power of nature. “Sometimes the simplest natural therapies can make a substantial difference in patients; it’s important to give those simple therapies a shot before doing something that is more invasive,” says Dr. McLeod.

“We can use all these natural therapies, either together, or before using prescriptions,” adds Dr. McLeod. “And that’s the beauty; we don’t just focus on one particular symptom — we review the entire case health history and develop a treatment plan customized for that individual.”

It started with one physician's big idea — to build a world-class, patient-centered, health-care centre in Vancouver. Today, almost 20 years later, False Creek Healthcare Centre (FCHC) enjoys a reputation for providing a unique collection of comprehensive health-care services in a state-of-the-art, medical services facility at 555 W. 8th Avenue in Vancouver. It is the largest of four surgical facilities across Canada in the Centric Health family, Canada's largest independent provider of health-care services.

“What makes FCHC unique is having three key related disciplines all under one roof: individual and family medicine, advanced diagnostics, and surgery. This means speed, efficiency and convenience for our patients," says Michelle Desreux, national surgical lead for Centric Health.

The FCHC Medical Services department offers urgent care on a walk-in basis, a membership-based family practice and a variety of health assessment programs such as Cardiac Health, Executive Health, and Women's Wellness. Visitors to the diagnostics department benefit from expedited access to some of the most advanced diagnostic equipment in Canada supported by a team of sub-specialty radiologists, which, together ensures fast, exceptional diagnostic results.

The department's 3.0Tesla MRI enables highly sophisticated imaging and is complemented by a 64-slice CT, high-definition ultrasound and digital x-ray. The surgical department delivers a broad range of surgeries from orthopaedics to bariatric weight loss (the SmartShape program), cosmetic surgery and much more. The more than 100 surgeons and specialists who work at FCHC are licensed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons Of British Columbia and are well versed in the most progressive, leading-edge techniques.

The FCHC model of service delivery is focused on helping people get back to work and back to their lives quickly and efficiently. It's important that people know they have choices and options so they can evaluate where those alternatives fit into their lives. FCHC's clients include insurance companies seeking to get their clients get back to work or play through expedited care, patients looking to reduce their wait time for diagnostics or surgery, people seeking cosmetic and anti-aging options, and individuals or families with general or specific health objectives and concerns who want personalized, unhurried attention.

"It is this multi-service, personalized, patient-centred care that is at the heart of the FCHC experience," says Desreux. "We're big and we're small. By being part of the Centric Health network our clients benefit from the size and scope of a national health-care organization, but as each of our facilities was built and developed in the local market, we also have the ideal ability to get up close and personal with the people we serve."

"It is our team of outstanding doctors, nurses and front-line staff that are really at the heart of the care that patients receive," reveals Desreux. "We believe that people today want to take more control of their health care — and we're here to make more options and services available so they can."

With a strong academic foundation in advanced hyperbaric oxygen therapy and diagnostic technologies, Burnaby’s BaroMedical Hyperbaric Oxygen Center is a state-of-the-art facility in prioritizing patient-centered care. It provides high quality services to health-care professionals looking for optimal solutions for their patients and individuals seeking timely and efficient therapy.

BaroMedical is not a typical health and wellness clinic; what sets it apart is its innovative hyperbaric services offered. International scholar Dr. Sanja Savić Kallesøe founded the centre in 1999 based on her pioneering research work in Canada and Europe. She directs the BaroMedical team with an industry-leading approach and continues to prioritize advancement and excellence in hyperbaric medicine as a preventive care modality. “Our primary goal is serving the needs of individuals in an effective, efficient and timely manner,” says Dr. Savić Kallesøe.

At BaroMedical, patients receive exclusive attention for their needs with compassion and warmth while getting access to academic excellency in hyperbaric medicine. Physicians privileged at BaroMedical draw upon extensive professional networks regularly updated through attendance and contribution at international conferences.

Special cases are discussed online with world-class hyperbaric experts, optimizing individual’s therapy protocol and minimizing delays.

“An operational cornerstone for BaroMedical is detecting and preventing diseases early on when they’re more effectively managed and treated,” says Dr. Klaus Kallesøe, clinic director and neurophysiologist.

Health Canada recognizes hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a well-established medical

treatment for a specific set of conditions including, carbon monoxide poisoning, injuries linked to reduced blood flow, and enhancement of wound healing in diabetic foot ulcers. In these cases, exposing the body to 100 percent pure oxygen inside specially pressurized chambers increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood by up to 30 times. This facilitates an anti-inflammatory response, promotes growth of new capillaries and stimulates release of stem cells in favour of speedy and effective recovery.

Neurorehabilitation in post concussion and stroke patients depends greatly on oxygen availability in the recovering brain. “When adding oxygen therapy early in rehabilitation, the ‘sleeping’ brain cells awaken and we see huge improvements in motor, cognitive and executive function, even years after a stroke,” reveals Dr. Klaus Kallesøe.

Oxygenation of the body rebuilds microcirculation in all organs, decreasing pain, infection, swelling and inflammation, which promotes healing and recovery. Quick results are seen in sports related injuries and slow healing diabetic wounds.

In cancer, hyper-oxygenation slows tumour growth and metastasis, plus it speeds up recovery after surgery. Oxygen enhances the effect of chemo- and radiation therapy, reducing their complications and side effects.

“Our oxygen therapy is targeted,” explains Dr. Savić Kallesøe. “With each patient our hyperbaric team carefully reviews the treatment plan explaining the goals and limitations. Generally, people are well informed but initially concerned about therapy cost. They soon realize it’s far more costly to passively sit at home with a wound or concussion and do nothing.”

With a contemporary aesthetic, the newly opened EDGE Dental is the epitome of progressive dentistry, just as the name suggests, including a nod to its North Vancouver locale in Edgemont Village.Dr. Sally Rassamanesh (DDS) has been practicing general dentistry in BC since 2003 and divides her time between EDGE Dental and SeRena Dental Centre in Delta, her first practice. In an effort to be closer to home and her family, she purchased Family Dental in the Village in 2014, and redesigned and rebranded it to EDGE Dental in May 2015.Taking a progressive methodology to dentistry, Dr. Rassamanesh embraces change and appreciates that technology is forever advancing. She stays ahead of the curve by keeping current with the latest materials, equipment and research findings in modern dentistry.

“Dentistry is not static, it’s always changing,” says Dr. Rassamanesh. “There are always advancements in the science and technology of dentistry. The materials and equipment are constantly improving and there are more efficient ways of doing treatments. We need to continue to learn and grow as dentistry grows.” EDGE Dental is outfitted with brand new equipment and state-of-the-art technology, including a top-of-the-line sterilization system. A digital panorex machine produces clinically precise upper and lower jaw X-rays, imaging excellence that helps catch potential dental problems in their earliest stages.

“Modern dentistry is all about prevention,” reveals Dr. Rassamanesh. “Don’t wait until you experience pain before you schedule a checkup. Pain means you need more advanced or complicated treatments that will be more costly in the long run.”

Together with a team of associates, Dr. Rassamanesh provides a wide range of services for superior oral health from preventive and restorative to cosmetic and surgical, which include: teeth whitening, crowns, bridges, porcelain veneers, root canal therapy, mercury-free fillings, and Invisalign. Relationship building holds significant importance to Dr. Rassamanesh, a quality she also instills in her team. You’ll receive a seamless transition from the reception area to the clinical elements of dentistry. “I’m most proud of my team without whom I couldn’t do this; we’re like family.”Both practices employ a patient-focused model of care, ensuring everyone’s individual needs are met. “Over time even our patients become like family and we want to provide them with the utmost comfort while minimizing their anxiety,” says Dr. Rassamanesh. SeRena Dental Centre and EDGE Dental are family-friendly practices where Dr. Rassamanesh attends to three generations of patients: grandparents, parents and kids. As a mother of two children aged four and six, she’s adept at treating kids.

“At age three we begin preventative work, cleaning, polishing, and fluoride treatment,” she says. “A child’s first visit should never be an emergency, otherwise they’ll always associate a bad, painful experience with the dentist.”Maintaining patient trust is an important quality at both practices, which motivates Dr. Rassamanesh and her team to keep striving for and achieving excellence in dental care in a friendly and relaxing environment.

However, home health care is not just for seniors, but rather includes a wide-ranging populace with diverse needs — from medical and personal care to companionship.

We Care North Shore was established in 1996 and provides compassionate and professional client-focused home care to over 200 patients in North/West Vancouver, Whistler and the Sunshine Coast.

Caregivers at We Care North Shore take on a more personalized and holistic approach, helping people stay safe, comfortable and as independent as possible, whether they live at home, in a long-term care facility or retirement community.

The scope of services at We Care North Shore is inclusive and provides health services in your home, workplace and in your community, including clinics and immunization programs, as well as occupational testing services for pre-employment screening.

Apart from companion and personal care, a comprehensive medical component is in place; caregivers have specialized training in acquired brain injury, Alzheimer’s, dementia, palliative and diabetes care.

“We are medically run,” says Barb MacDonald, owner and director. “Some companies are just companions or homemakers, but we’re a medical home care company. We have a full gamut of nurses, occupational therapists and physiotherapists.”

MacDonald has been a registered nurse since 1983. Working in ICU at Lions Gate Hospital has prepared her for just about anything that can arise on the job. “We provide anything people need to help them stay in their home,” says MacDonald.

“The bulk of our clients are seniors, but we also have patients from WorkSafeBC and ICBC. We have new moms who’ve returned home and aren’t healing as well as they’d like, and people who are post-surgical. We can set up a complete hospital room in their home, affix dressings, provide medication reminders and give IVs.”

The home health care industry in North Vancouver has grown from roughly four businesses to about 43 since the inception of We Care North Shore.

“When I started there wasn’t a lot in place for people in home care,” reveals MacDonald. “You got what the government would pay for, but if you wanted to top it up there weren’t a lot of options.”

Individuals who require assisted living, either short or long-term, can book a complimentary assessment. Caregivers are matched with clients based on needs and compatible personalities. The company endeavours to maintain a minimum client- to-caregiver ratio. Clients can cancel a contract with 24-hours’ notice.

Some of We Care’s services are covered by agencies such as ICBC, WorkSafeBC, Vancouver Coastal Health and Veterans Affairs Canada. Chronic conditions may also be covered as a medical expense by a physician’s order.

Additionally, you or your loved ones may qualify for Medical Expense & Disability Tax Credits & Attendant Care Expense Deduction; contact Canada Revenue Agency for information.

We Care is accredited by Accreditation Canada, which sanctions hospitals and other Canadian health care providers, a distinction that very few agencies offer.

One of the only orthodontist specialty practices in the Fraser Valley (with a location in Surrey at Guildford Orthodontics and in Langley at Langley Orthodontics), Dr. Aly Kanani is committed and dedicated to excellence in orthodontic treatments including Invisalign and braces for children, teenagers, and adults.

Dr. Kanani, a certified specialist in orthodontics, provides his patients with a positive and rewarding orthodontic experience, improving their smiles and correcting jaw alignment by utilizing sophisticated diagnostic and treatment techniques.

Dr. Kanani is recognized as an Invisalign certified orthodontist, coupled with a precise skill set and ten celebrated years of experience as an Invisalign and Invisalign Teen provider. Invisalign straightens teeth using a series of clear, removable aligners that are custom-modeled to fit your teeth.

“Dr. Kanani’s offices are one of the few in B.C. recognized as having ‘an exceptional level of experience’ with Invisalign,” says Michael Fernie, Western Canada Manager for Invisalign. “Dr. Kanani also avoid messy impressions because his teams use an advanced intraoral scanning technique that allows them to take virtual 3D impressions of your teeth.”

Both Guildford Orthodontics and Langley Orthodontics offer a variety of teeth-straighten methods including, In-Ovation System Braces (self-ligating metal brackets that use light and gentle forces for greater comfort), lingual braces, and tooth-coloured and translucent clear ceramic braces.

As experts in orthodontics, Dr. Kanani and his associates hold accreditation with the Canadian Association of Orthodontists. Their entire team consistently attends

courses and applies the latest treatment modalities that improve their patient’s comfort and care.

“We have an in-office lab to produce many of our dental appliances on site, plus we use modern technologies like digital radiography and paperless charting,” says Dr. Kanani. “This helps us to be eco-friendly, as well as efficient with the time our patients spend in our office.”

Each member of Dr. Kanani’s experienced team is knowledgeable, friendly and helpful with a service-oriented philosophy, respectively empowered to address problem situations and resolve patient concerns. “For patients who prefer a little more privacy, we also have private treatment rooms in addition to our open bay area,” reveals Dr. Kanani.

Both offices offer a no-obligation educational consultation, plus zero-interest payment plans to suit everyone’s budget. Fees cover everything necessary to care for your teeth and braces, including special flossing appliances, mouth guards and fluoride.

As a health-care provider, Dr. Kanani makes a significant commitment to community outreach. “I feel it’s important to invest in the residents, to let them know that I not only care about their teeth, but also about where we live; my patients know that I’m genuinely interested in their activities and ways to improve our city’s schools, sports and local organizations.”

Additionally, Dr. Kanani is committed to the creation of an environment that is open, friendly and pleasant. “We take special care of our younger and adult patients from in-office video game stations and fun contests to fresh Starbucks coffee and the latest magazines,” says Dr. Kanani. “We cover it all!”

Proud to be B.C.’s largest community based imaging service provider, West Coast Medical Imaging (WCMI) has the unique ability to guide its patients amongst 21 geographically convenient locations in order to expedite exam times.

At WCMI, friendly professional service, patient comfort, safety and care is paramount with a focus in relocating clinics for better patient access. These include state-of-the-art, purpose-built clinics in Royal City Centre (New Westminster) and Uptown mall (Victoria), with immediate plans underway for two additional clinics. The entire WCMI community is committed to providing high-quality diagnostic services.

In partnership with individual radiologists and hospital based groups, such as the radiologists of St. Paul’s hospital and Vancouver Island’s South Island radiology group, WCMI radiologists are accredited with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C.

WCMI radiologists have access to patient history between their clinics on a fully digitized RIS/PACS platform, focusing on accuracy and timely reporting (48-hours or sooner) to the referring physicians, providing a flexible and comprehensive service for patients.

WCMI has various imaging modalities and resources with different physical principles of varying complexity including X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, fluoroscopy, screening/diagnostic mammography, bone density and hysterosalpingogram. All services (excluding private MRI) are MSP billable when accompanied by a B.C. Services Card (CareCard). All requisitions are accepted.

“The science behind these modalities and the tool for imaging is different,” says Dr. Jonathon Leipsic, MD, FRCPC, cardiopulmonary imaging specialist. “Some utilize ionizing radiation such as X-ray,

mammography and CTs; ultrasound uses sound, and MRI uses magnetic field and the intrinsic tissue compositions of the body.”

Dr. Leipsic adds, “They have different mechanisms of action or image development and yield images that have distinctive strengths. Ultrasound is quite good at looking at superficial parts, especially abdominal, gynaecological issues, testicular issues, and thyroid, for example. MRI is exquisite in its detail of joint assessment and neuroimaging; mammography and CT (only available in a hospital setting) is excellent for its spatial resolution, its ability to see small things.”

WCMI collaborates with existing and new physicians to offer enhanced care for their respective patients. Many radiologists specialize in sub-specialties including cardiovascular, neuroradiology, gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal, to offer specialized care.

WCMI is committed to innovation and technology to provide enhanced patient care by continually investing in state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, including the GE 3.0T MRI SIGNA Pioneer machine on Vancouver Island, the first of its kind in North America. Notable advantages include non-invasive prostate health imaging and a reduced need for IV contrast.

“There has been a tremendous evolution of medical imaging over the last three decades,” reveals Dr. Leipsic. “Non-invasive medical imaging is essential for the diagnosis of a number of conditions that previously were either diagnosed surgically or unfortunately post mortem.” WCMI is well positioned to support the public health-care system with the dynamics and advantages that diagnostic imaging has to offer.

Running a pharmacy can mean seeing a large number of people for a brief period of time, and customers might start to feel as though they are simply another prescription to be filled. Robin’s Pharmacy, owned by Robin Manweiler, focuses on getting to know each of their clients, so they can provide first-class care and tailored recommendations to each person who comes in. This individual focus not only helps establish trust with the clients, it helps them to feel at ease.

Having worked for many years as a relief pharmacist after graduating from UBC in 1996, Manweiler had enough experience in different pharmacy environments to formulate a best practices model for Robin’s Pharmacy, which he opened in 2009. Relying heavily on his staff to carry out the engagement with patients and customers, he counts his team as the most valuable asset he has to ensure people are being cared for.

“Our team focuses on the experience in the pharmacy, rather than adhering to the traditional medical model,” Manweiler says. “It’s about the whole experience people have when they leave the pharmacy. That’s important to someone’s frame of mind and quality of life.”

Setting themselves apart from other pharmacies involves going above and beyond. That includes personally delivering urgently needed items to customers, getting to know their customers by their first names, and following up when there are concerns about the patient’s health.

“It’s about developing strong relationships with customers, making sure they know we’re interested in their general wellbeing,” Manweiler says. “We spend the time to get to know them, so we have a greater picture of who they are, rather than just being a number or a prescription. If we have enough information outside of the medicine they take—such as who they are and what their habits are—our general understanding of what they need is more clear.”

As a part of their community focus, Robin’s Pharmacy works closely with Kettle Friendship Society serving patients who require mental health support. Kettle, a non-profit organization, has been a pillar for those in need of mental health services throughout Vancouver for decades providing housing, employment, and support services for vulnerable citizens. Robin’s Pharmacy works with Kettle, providing prescription medication delivery and administration to many of those who utilize the Kettle’s services. Robin’s Pharmacy is currently in the process of expanding its location to include the business unit next door. The increased space will allow the pharmacy’s staff to continually improve its service level and care. The medication monitoring team at Robin’s Pharmacy are certified mental health professionals with extensive experience working with those who are in need of mental health support and medication services. In addition to physically growing, Robin’s Pharmacy has moved into technology, launching an app in conjunction with their drug wholesaler Unipharm, which will allow patients to refill prescriptions and make other requests directly from their smartphones. The app, which customers can download on their iPhone, Android, or tablet under the name “Medicine Centre,” sends a request to the pharmacy’s fax, which staff will then add to their workload. The goal is to improve the patient’s quality of care and make the staff ’s workload more efficient.

“Everything we do is with patient care in mind,” Manweiler says. “We want to make patients’ lives better and make the community better. We do what we can to continually make a difference for those we serve. We want to know people’s opinions on how we can more effectively serve them and expand our scope to fulfill their needs more completely. We don’t know what those needs are until they tell us. Feedback is always greatly appreciated.”

By most accounts, every child fears a visit to the dentist; however, Dr. Karim Kanani and Dr. Diya Chadha of Burnaby’s SmileTown Dentistry work to minimize that expected trepidation and are committed daily to mitigate children’s anxiety with their family-friendly practice.

“The most important thing about a healthy smile is to have the ability to go to the dentist without fear,” says Dr. Chadha. “A reason adults don’t go to the dentist is that they’ve had a negative experience as a child, so the ability to initially form a positive experience is important. They’ll be lifelong, happy, cooperative patients as adults.”

Dr. Kanani has a certificate in pediatric dentistry and is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, while Dr. Chadha is a certified specialist in pediatric dentistry. Both doctors hold a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree and embody a passion for working with children to provide the best possible treatment and dental experience for every child.

SmileTown Dentistry is designed with a fun and engaging environment that caters to the unique needs of children of all ages, from babies to teenagers, including children with special needs. Every office is wheelchair accessible and staff utilize a variety of techniques to assist special-needs dental patients.

Growing up with a brother with special needs, Dr. Chadha knows first-hand the difficulties families and patients with disabilities endure who require access to dental care.

“I knew how challenging it was to get my brother into appointments and my parents experienced an equal amount of stress,” explains Dr. Chadha. “I wanted to help other families; that’s why we decided to open

offices that are fun for children of all ages and specially designed to accommodate families with special-needs children.” Dr. Kanani adds, “We are here to help, and we are empathetic to their needs.”

With a comprehensive range of high-quality children-centred dental services, SmileTown Dentistry offers a variety of care and treatment options including interceptive orthodontics, nitrous oxide, sedation dentistry and general anesthesia.

Each SmileTown office has a different kid-friendly theme. Burnaby’s is a jungle, including animated animal characters, colourful murals, and a special jungle theatre. Additional offices expected to open soon are North Delta/Surrey, to include a beach theme, and Langley, an underwater theme.

In addition to providing professional dental care, SmileTown is committed to community involvement and education. The doctors hold presentations at local schools and daycare centres about the importance of good oral health.

“Our goal is to provide the best dental care possible for our young patients,” says Dr. Kanani. “Our philosophy is that everyone deserves compassionate care; we want children to enjoy coming to the dentist. It’s a humbling experience to have an opportunity to work with children and get that smile or high-five at the end of the appointment.”

Kinsmen Lodge, a 157-bed, fourstorey care home in Surrey, has created an environment where people feel productive and valued, and who continue to have a sense of purpose and contribution. The Kinsmen Care Team makes this possible through their recreation and volunteer programs, facilitated through the Eden Alternative Philosophy of Care™.

This philosophy, in part, is designed to reduce the plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom. The program intention is structured to promote wellness, encourage independence and choice, meaningful activities, social engagement, stimulation, purpose, and of course, fun.

“The Eden Alternative Philosophy of Care™ helps staff, elders and volunteers focus on what is meaningful and important to elders,” says Leisa Bannerman, director of Recreation and Volunteer Services, “to create a home that includes possibilities for real friendships and foster strengths and talents yet to be discovered.”

On the surface, recreation may seem like a nice added value, but it’s essential to the quality of life elders enjoy at Kinsmen Lodge. According to extensive research, there’s a direct correlation between social engagement and purpose to the overall wellness of elders.

“Recreation is a vital part of our philosophy of care,” says Kathleen Strath, CEO. “The activities and programs stimulate the elders and keep them engaged, often providing an avenue to try something new. The volunteers are a wonderful asset to Kinsmen Lodge; they visit with elders, help them attend activities and create an atmosphere of fun and home.”

Gardening, music, art, exercise, weekly happy hour, special events, day trips, and the Java Music Club are some of the key program activities available to our elders.

Elder Patrick Muir says art therapy gives him a chance to express his creativity. “I look forward to it each week and am pleasantly surprised by the quality of work by my fellow elders,” he says. “We have fun and socialize while attempting new projects.”

“The Java Music Club is a significant addition to our core recreation programs,” says music therapist, Maddie Bourdages. “People come each week to spend time with friends over a cup of coffee, chat about life, share stories and enjoy the music. One of our ladies often brings and plays her own maraca.”

The Java Music Club reaches out to those elders who may be isolated, lonely, and sometimes depressed. Don’t be surprised to catch elders enjoying Frank Sinatra’s silky voice or the unforgettable Nat King Cole.

“Many of our recreation programs would not be possible without the 200-plus volunteers that help make Kinsmen Lodge a warm and loving home,” reveals Bannerman. “Their contributions enhance the quality of life for our elders, and in return, Kinsmen provides volunteers with opportunities to grow, gain confidence and expand their skill set. Our youngest volunteer is five and our most senior volunteer is 83.”

More than ever, consumers want to know the story behind the food they purchase and where their food comes from. People seek not only authenticity but provenance, too. For most health-minded individuals it's a quest for sustainability.

The Organic Grocer in Surrey's Newton Village is a B.C. owned and operated natural health food store that has brought organics, the organic process, quality ingredients, and health and wellness products into the foreground since 1993.

"We strive to work together with our suppliers, community officials and staff to ensure the sustained availability of heath and health-care products for our growing community," says Lisa Ayres, marketing manager. "We serve customers hailing from multiple generations — parents who brought their kids are now adults, and today they bring their kids; its been rewarding to watch these families grow and help them throughout the years."

The buy-local movement has broadened its once limited scope, in part because of education, a benchmark for the Organic Grocer. They're proud to be a founding member of Get Local, a community of local businesses and B.C. food producers promoting local eating.

"Community is the basis of any strong society and supporting our local businesses and farmers is very important to us," says Ayres. "It keeps toxins out of the environment for travelling foods and keeps you connected to people who are growing your food. Plus, it helps you eat a fresher more vital diet."

People are not just thinking locally about their food sources, but also thinking globally about the impact of the food production system.

"We are Non-GMO Project verified (a non-profit organization committed to preserving and building the non-GMO food supply, educating consumers, and providing verified non-GMO choices)," says Ayers. "People want to be more environmentally friendly and realize their food choices also affect the planet."

Top quality organics (produce, dairy, chicken and meats) are of the highest standards including their non-toxic skin care. "In Canada, you must be certified to call or label yourself organic, which is a long process," reveals Ayres. "However, everything we carry follows the organic process, the products may just not be certified."

A big component of the Organic Grocer is their vitamin department with on-site practitioners. Building customer relationships ensures the understanding of their background so employees can help everybody holistically. "We have a registered holistic nutritionist, a master herbalist, a digestive care specialist, and chiropractic doctor on staff daily," says Ayres. "Our vitamin staff is highly-trained and aware of all our clientele's different requirements."

The staff adheres to customer's allergies, food sensitivities and specific diets from vegan and Halal to gluten-free and Paleo. "We're very willing to look for special products and order in whenever possible." says Ayres. Additionally, professionals provide in-store monthly clinics, for example, naturopaths, estheticians and people with biofeedback. "We offer our customers free services to provide a higher level of attention."

Lifestyle enhancement and self-improvement are the desired results at Vancouver's private Anti-Aging Medical & Laser Clinic, where preventative medicine aims to merge medically advanced technology and knowledge to optimize the benefits of your extended life span.

"It's important to ensure that we live long and live healthy," says Dr. Frame. "At Anti-Aging we aim to support the ideal of enjoying a good quality of life in our mature years because looking good means feeling good."

"People enjoy our personalized service, boutique atmosphere as well as our unrushed, thorough style," adds Dr. Frame. "Our dedicated team is passionate about helping you look your age, but looking good for your age. No one should see what you've done. A refreshed and natural look is the best result."

Anti-Aging Medical & Laser Clinic treats a variety of skin conditions related to aging, sun damage, and genetics. The laser and skincare centre uses a wide range of safe, effective, cutting-edge non-surgical techniques that make skin appear younger, healthier and more vital. The Venus Viva, Thermage CPT and the Fraxel DUAL are newer and safer cosmetic breakthroughs, which now allow them to repair and tighten your skin in under an hour with minimal discomfort and downtime.

Neuromodulators (a class of injectable medications) such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin, are quick, non-invasive treatments

that offer noticeable improvement in just a few days. They help reduce dynamic lines caused by repeated facial expressions such as squinting, smiling, and frowning, and specifically target crow's feet and forehead wrinkles. These injections can improve wrinkles quickly and prevent them from becoming deep crevices in the face. "A relaxed face, moderately done, creates the impression of a refreshed look. Looking your best has never been easier," reveals Dr. Frame.

"We need to display emotions and facial movement," admits Dr. Frame. "Cosmetic injections should relax facial muscles of expression just enough to make you look fresh and happy, not immobile and cold. An experienced cosmetic injector must balance the face to look natural, refreshed and uplifted. After replenishing lost facial volume with fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Emervel, and the underlying support and structure is in place, textural concerns can be addressed by using good quality skincare and lasers. Prevention is better than cure."

"We're living longer and longer but the last quarter of our lives has low quality," says Dr. Frame. "We should strive to maintain brain and body function to the end." Dr. Frame offers private, preventative health-care consultations. He believes that health is your wealth.

“People don’t come to us for implants — they come to us for an enhancement in the quality of their life; dental implants are simply the medium to achieve what they really want, which is the smile, function and confidence, provided by the restoration.” says Dr. Norman Ickert, director, Ickert Dental Implant Centre.

With a model of patient-centred care and a state-of-the-art facility, Dr. Ickert and the dedicated clinical team at Langley’s Ickert Dental Implant Centre is focused on providing a complete approach to the care involved with dental implants.

Embracing a passionate, evidence-based belief, Dr. Ickert considers oral health to have a great impact on your physical, psychological and emotional well-being. “Not feeling complete with your mouth, both in function and aesthetics, has adverse implications,” he says. “We provide a service based on trust, empathy and understanding and work towards a goal where our patients can feel that their lives have improved as the result of the work that was done in our office.”

Their treatment philosophy is underpinned by objectives to help each patient feel safe and supported throughout treatment and the maintenance period. “We provide a safe environment where patients can come and be vulnerable, knowing they’ll be treated with dignity to allow them to receive the care they need and desire,” reveals Dr. Ickert.

Five core principles outline the treatment philosophy with the ultimate goal of satisfying each patient’s unique situation: understand each patient’s chief concern; risk assessment; accurate diagnosis; individualized treatment plan, and strategic execution.

“Firstly, we determine what the patient’s chief concern is and then establish a sound diagnosis (there can be only one correct diagnosis, but many different treatment options),” explains Dr. Ickert. “Then we create an evidence-based treatment plan (with optimal options) and execute the treatment with our clinical skills, education, experience, and our empathy.”

The clinic offers an extensive range of dentistry options, including single and multiple dental implants, implant supported dentures/partial dentures and comprehensive restorations.

“We stand behind what we do one hundred per cent,” affirms Dr. Ickert. “From the diagnostic phase and the surgical component to the prosthetics; we take the full responsibility for all aspects.”

The centre uses the most current technologies, including an in-house computed tomographic scanner (providing 3-D imagery). “Technology continues to evolve and treatments are less invasive and more predictable today,” says Dr. Ickert. “We can use smaller, shorter implants, for example, which can mean less bone grafting.”

Dr. Ickert also teaches surgical implant dentistry at the Kois Centre in Seattle, in addition to the continuous, comprehensive educational surgical, and prosthetic training with world leaders in this field in North America and Europe.

“We have a comprehensive international flavour to our training, which I think is beneficial,” he admits. “This has given us a global perspective on how to manage different dental situations for a large variety of patients.”

John Volken believes in the phrase “learn, earn, and return.” His time to return arrived in 1995 when he was awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Shortly after, John sold his furniture business and put all the proceeds into a foundation to help those who cannot help themselves – those who are wanting to better their lives but don’t have the means to do so. He then travelled all of North America and Europe to investigate the successes of therapeutic communities. He formed a Board of Directors to oversee three facilities in Arizona, Washington, and BC and it was decided to name the program the John Volken Academy.

Therapeutic Communities (TC) are group based, highly structured treatment centres that go much further than simply helping individuals to stop using drugs and alcohol. They provide a supportive environment where individuals learn why they used and develop all the tools necessary to stay sober.

The motto of Therapeutic Communities is “each one, teach one”. This implies that individuals assume responsibility not only for their own recovery, but also for the recovery of their peers. They recognize that the recovery of each member is related to the recovery of all and conduct themselves accordingly – this, in turn, reinforces their own recovery. Personal growth and proper living are achieved by peers serving as role models, providing support through interaction, and confronting each other in group sessions. By doing all of this, participants come to understand and resolve the cause of their addiction and also gain the tools they need to stay sober.

The John Volken Academy’s long-term program provides the opportunity for participants to adopt a health new lifestyle, develop strong character, receive extensive career training, and advance their education.

The newly expanded John Volken Academy in Surrey’s Newton community includes a 72 unit housing complex, gymnasium, lecture theatre, culinary arts program, state of the art Mac lab, and will be home to the Technology Centre for Addiction Recovery and Mental Health, an Innovation Boulevard partnership between SFU, the City of Surrey, the Surrey Fire Fighters, and the John Volken Academy.

For his success in changing lives, in 2015, John Volken was awarded the Dalai Lama Humanitarian Award. “The steadfast goal here is that students acquire freedom from addiction,” says Volken. The program provides the tools for young men and women in recovery to live life with purpose and become the best that they can be. “Sometimes it’s emotionally draining when someone doesn’t succeed,” admits Volken. “But when graduation comes, parents are amazed, proud, and we see students’ tears of gratitude and success. That’s all work it; life doesn’t get any better than that!”

Surrey’s Innovation Boulevard is the overarching Ecosystem supporting a fusion of innovation and technology creating solutions for the future and an overly burdened health care system. Within that Ecosystem, the Lark Group has designed the Health & Technology DISTRICT, immediately adjacent to Surrey Memorial Hospital and an ever expanding campus of health sciences.

The first of eight buildings within the Health & Technology DISTRICT, City Centre 1 is already home to over 90 medical professionals and specialists, numerous start-up innova-tion and technology companies and a rapidly growing network of new partners, including Universities and large multinational health organizations, in addition to some of the most advanced digital health, technology and com-mercialization companies.

The overall DISTRICT was designed and constructed with infinite imagination, vision, and purposefully modeled after world leading innovation centres.

City Centre 1 (CC 1) was developed by Lark Group in partnership with Dayhu Group of Companies. Executing quality project delivery and leading-industry design-build, the $75-million, 12-storey LEED® Gold designed office tower has already proven that the co-location of innovative thought leaders has designed an environment that enables creative collaboration and new advances in health care, digital health and advanced technologies.

Lark is just about to begin construction on City Centre 2 & 3, with an additional 300K square feet of mixed use office, retail and clinical – surgical space, to accommodate the imminent growth and success of the DISTRICT.

Innovation Boulevard has already become recognized as an international health and technology incubator, attracting companies designing medical devices, independent living technologies and digital health solutions, and Lark Group has designed the Health & Technology DISTRICT to accommodate all

new growth with all of the requisite amenities and adjacencies to promote continued growth & success.

With astonishing creativity, the team at Lark have also established a unique concierge service within City Centre 1, known as the Health Tech Innovation HUB.

The focus of the HUB is to support the companies who locate within the Health & Technology DISTRICT, and assisting them to connect with the necessary partners and networks within Innovation Boulevard and beyond, including development of capital and venture funding sources and regulatory as well as commercialization partnerships, opening up local, national and international markets.

The shared vision for Innovation Boulevard and the Health & Technology DISTRICT is to achieve impactful and disruptive results in four key areas: improve health outcomes; implement intelligent solutions for the health-care system; attract talented clinicians and researchers; and grow the local economy in health-care related technologies and services sectors.

Lark is widely recognized for each of its CORE mandates – DEVELOP - BUILD – MANAGE. Lark has been a leader in health-care development and construction across British Columbia, developing award-winning institutional projects by synthesizing the best of evidence-based design and patient-centred care, while delivering the services and features that clinicians need. To date, Lark has completed 17 Public Private Partnerships (P3’s) in addition to numerous health, commercial and residential related projects.

“We’re excited about being a key partner in Innovation Boulevard; we have seen the extraordinary growth of this initiative in just 3 short years,” admits Lark Owner Larry Fisher. “It is very rewarding for Lark to be part of something that will change the future for Canadians. We look forward to creating new opportunities and making exciting buildings that will contribute to the future growth of the city.”
